Devil’s Punchbowl - Colorado

Going back in the catalog a few years to the autumn of 2011 for this one.  This is located along the road leading out of Aspen, up towards Independence pass. Managed to capture this between people jumping off the cliffs into the cool water below.

There’s another identically named ‘Devil’s Punchbowl’ in Colorado that is located on the Crystal River along a difficult 4WD road between Crystal City and Schofield Pass (between Marble and Crested Butte).  Being roughly 50 yards from the parking area along a paved road, this one is much easier to get to.

Three bracketed frames processed in Lightroom 5 and HDR Efex Pro 2.  A little tweaking in Lightroom after the HDR process to tone down a few distracting bright rock surfaces, and to brighten the water in the rock narrows a little.

Sunrise at Dead Horse Point State Park - Utah
This shot captured last May on my first trip to the Utah arches area.  Our first morning there we went to Dead Horse State Park for sunrise.  We got there an hour or so before sunrise, giving us time to look around a bit before the sun came up.  The sky did not cooperate as much as we would have like, being pretty much a solid gray.  However, the sun came through and gave us a gorgeous glow on the red rocks below.

For a while, it was quite an exhilarating morning, having the area to ourselves.  The quiet beauty eventually broken by the arrival of a tour bus full of tourist.

Five bracketed frames processed in Lightroom 5 and Google/Nik HDR Efex Pro 2.  A little selective sharpening in Photoshop afterwards.

Canyon View - Canyonlands National Park - Utah

Taken from the trip at the beginning of the year. A cold, but luckily windless, morning at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. The morning initially started out pretty hazy, with the canyon filled with clouds. As the fog lifted, it revealed this scene. For those familiar with the area, the rock in the foreground on the left is the beginning of the right side of Mesa Arch.

Photo Notes: Two frames focus stacked in Photoshop. One, one for the distant view the other to bring the detail to the rocks in the foreground.

Mountain Goat View – Mt. Evans, Colorado
Best Viewed Large

A few weeks back the road up Mt. Evans finally opened, its opening delayed a few months by rebuilding work to a stretch of road that collapsed down the mountainside.  Sunrise brought great views of the plains to east, and the mountain goats were out in force.

A short while after sunrise, I caught this guy taking in the view.  The adult goats still had pretty shaggy fur, as they had yet to complete shedding their winter coats.

Mt. Evans, one of Colorado’s fifty-three 'fourteeners', is located thirty-five miles directly west of Denver, and its summit tops out at 14,271-feet (4,350 m).  The road leading up to about 140 feet from the mountain's summit is the highest paved road in North America.

Sunrise on Turret Arch, through Windows Arch - Arches Ntl Park, Utah

From the trip at the start of this year.  Wonderful warm morning sunlight breaking through.  I can’t say that the composition is original, though.  When you visit this location, you can climb around to the side opposite of the window where there is a spot that pretty much only one tripod will fit.  I’m sure if the surface wasn’t rock, I’d be putting my tripod in the same post holes as many who have come before me.

Photo Notes: Five frame HDR set, blended back into original photo with HDR image opacity reduced to 60%.  Area through the window used a virtual copy of the original photo that was adjusted a little differently, and then also blended with the HDR image opacity at 30%.

Eerie View - Canyonlands National Park - Utah

Another from the trip earlier this year. A chilly, hazy morning near Mesa Arch. The skies didn't cooperate much in providing a brilliant, glowing sunrise. However, the heavy haze, rising fog, and this bare tree made for a interestingly eerie scene.

Horses in Pasture Below Mt. Sneffels - Colorado

Another shot from this past fall. From the same area up CR 7 that the Autumn Reflections image I posted in October (just the other side of the pond). Absolutely gorgeous area that is between Ridgway and Telluride, in southwest Colorado.

Photo Notes: Three frame HDR processed in Lightroom and Google Nik HDR Pro 2.  HDR frame blended back into middle exposure frame with the opacity of the HDR layer reduced to about 35%.  Color balance adjustment on the mountains and Photoshoped to remove a truck and tent in the distance on right side.

12,441 foot high (3792 m) East Beckwith Mountain from Lost Lake Sough at the Lost Lake campground.  It snowed overnight while staying at the Lost Lake Campground in the Kebler Pass area of Colorado.  It was so nice to be able to stumble out of the warm camper 100 feet to the shore for this morning shot, and then back to the camper for a nice hot breakfast.

Five bracketed frames processed in Lightroom 5 and Nik Collection HDR Efex Pro 2.  Cleaned up some clutter in the water with the healing brush in Adobe Photoshop.

Denver, Colorado – Super/Harvest Moon

Technically, this isn't a super moon or the harvest moon, as it was taken the day after.  But … it is darn close.  Plotted our location and timing using +The Photographer's Ephemeris , we took a chance.  It had been cloudy and rainy all day leading up to this, but we went out anyhow and took a chance that there would be a break in the clouds.

Even if the moon did not work out, it was going to be an opportunity to scout for an evening cityscape along the shore of Sloan Lake.  I was quite thrilled with sky and clouds as the moon began to rise behind the downtown Denver city scene.  I wish my exposure had captured some detail in the moon itself - I will know better next time.

Note on +The Photographer's Ephemeris  :  If you used the desktop version of this in the past that made use of Adobe Air (both Mac & Windows), you'll find your installed software no longer works.  As of about a week ago, they have moved the free desktop version to be supported by their web based app.  Still free, still a wonderful tool for plotting sun/moon locations for photography shoots.  Because the web address carries all the settings info for a specific view, I can give you all the exact plotting of when/where this shot was taken.  The only thing I am not sure of is that it says the moon's elevation at this time was 1.7 degrees above the horizon, and the image shows this to be different (so I think).  If you are a photographer, check out the link.  I think you will find it interesting.

Three images from a bracketed set were merged into an HDR using +Nik Collection by Google  HDR Pro 2.  The resulting image was blended back into the middle frame of the bracket set and opacity reduced to 43%.  Luminosity of the original image was blended back again at 100%.  Noise in sky and water was reduced using +Topaz Labs  DeNoise 5.

Colorado Sunflowers

Out near the airport in Denver, Colorado, fields of sunflowers come to bloom every summer.  Sunsets here along the front range of the Rocky Mountains often provide for a fiery backdrop of red, pink, and gold hues for shots of the flowers.  However, this particular evening thick, ominous, stormy clouds prevailed.

Five bracketed frames processed in Lightroom 5 and Google/Nik HDR Efex Pro 2.  Layered into photoshop with the original middle frame of the bracket set, with the HDR layer set to a luminosity blending mode, and reduced to 15% opacity, providing a touch of additional definition to the clouds and bringing up some of the deeper shadows in the greenery of the flowers..

Double RL Ranch / Dallas Divide - San Juan Mountains - Colorado

This past fall, driving over Dallas Divide.  Morning view, looking over the highway just below, out of frame, towards the Sneffels range.  Ralph's cattle gathered near the gate.  Nice lines created by the fencing, I couldn’t resist jumping out of car, climbing up the embankment a grabbing this shot.  I wish the sky had a little more interest in it – I'll just have to check the view in the future whenever I pass this point along the highway between Ridgway and Telluride.

Blanca Peak and the Sierra Blanca Massif - Colorado

Processing Notes: A five image bracketed set processed with Nik HDR Pro, using their Deep 2 preset.  In Photoshop, the result was overlaid with a single frame from the original bracket set, and the HDR layer’s opacity reduced to 36%.  The exposure of the bird alone was reduced to increase their contract against the sky.  Magenta luminosity slightly reduced to deepen the purple hue a touch.

Multi-Colored Stand of Aspen, Near Silverjack Reservoir - Colorado

For those familiar with the area, this is along the road that goes past Silverjack Reservoir.  There is this field where there is a turnoff for the Silverjack Reservoir overlook to one side of the road, and a smaller road that goes off on the other side, up towards Rowdy Lake.  Looking across the field, there was this beautiful stand of aspens, with streaks running across showing all stages of their fall colors.

Pinnacles Between East and Middle Forks of Cimarron River – Near Silverjack Res., Colorado

Another shot from this past fall - same gorgeous day as my three previous posts.  And there are more to come from that same day.

Of interesting note, two days after this shot was taken, the foliage on this glorious group of aspen trees were mostly black and dark rust brown, due to an overnight freeze.

Single frame processed in Lightroom 5.  Minor exposure and contrast increase, a little reduction of blue luminance combined with a little increase of saturation of blue only, to increase separation of the sky.

Rowdy Lake 1 - Colorado

Finally getting back to working through my images from this past autumn.  On my second day of basing out of the Ridgway, Colorado area, I decided to go up over Owl Creek Pass and work the Cimmaron/Silverjack Reservoir area.  This end up being the best day, foliage color-wise, of the trip.  I started the morning by driving up the dirt side-road to Rowdy Lake.  Here's the first image I've got from there that day.

Two images from a bracketed set, processed in Lightroom 5, and then manually blending in the rock face for better exposure in Photoshop.

After going over Red Mountain Pass out of Ouray, I went exploring up San Juan Cnty Rd 7, off of the Million Dollar Highway.  I saw a waterfall up the side of the hill that I climbed to check out, and on my way back down to the car the red streaks on the hillside down-valley caught my attention.  This is looking back towards the town of Silverton, Colorado

Foliage Status Update - 10/8/2013

Taking the long scenic route back home from the San Juans, I ended up staying the night in Carbondale.  I started the morning heading up Capitol Creek Rd to check out how things were doing looking towards Capitol Peak.  Colors are still holding on fairly well, although they have been dulled by the long/late season and the cold.  The image in this post was taken from Capitol Creek Trailhead parking area.  Typically, this is more of an evening shot, but the light raking across the little hills below the peaks provided character in the shadows and gave the foliage some nice side light.  As can be seen in the image, the right side of the valley has quite a bit of bare trees, so I didn't bother driving up to the higher vantage point at the end of the road as the bare trees would dominate the image more.

Driving out of Capitol Creek, I took the back way into Snowmass Village on Old Snowmass Rd.  Not much to report on the ranches on the back road, but the village itself is holding on pretty well, foliage color-wise.  Owl Creek Rd while leaving the village, in particular, was doing well.  One of the images attached is from near the top of the road looking back over the village towards Snowmass Peak.  Also, the large aspen grove along Owl Creek where the road passes the large ranches, is also doing very well.

Due to the government shutdown, I couldn't do my regular pilgrimage to the Maroon Bells, so I headed up Castle Creek towards Ashcroft, instead.  The lower areas have some spots that are looking good.  The Conundrum Creek valley look fairly nice too, and I have attached a reference photo of that area.  Beyond Conundrum the colors deteriorated quickly.  Up towards Ashcroft and beyond it was mostly bare or brown/black leaves, with only a few spots of orange.

From Castle Creek I went over Independence Pass to Twin Lakes.  The lower areas near Aspen had some pretty good color, but by the time you get to the Weber Campground & pullout, things were rather poor.  Twin Lakes had a little in the way of dark orange and browns, but anything higher in altitude back towards the pass was mostly bare.

Whenever I mention "good color", most of it is actually somewhat dulled by the spotting and browning of the leaves.  It is mostly with side and back lighting that I could get much color intensity, as it is in a good year.

The attached shots are just quick images, briefly processed from RAW in Lightroom, and are provided for reference and are not final processed images.

Foliage Status Update - 10/7/2013

Peak color in the San Juans has pretty much passed.  There is still color to be found, but very little of the brilliant yellow.  Lots of trees with black leaves, or heavily spotted and thus dulling their color.

On Sunday I explored Wilson Mesa and the 4WD route of Last Dollar Rd.  These areas are doing much better than Silver Jack apparently having not been hit with as hard of a freeze.  However, colors are muted.  Surprisingly, there is still A LOT of green trees.  But they just don't seem to want to transition into brilliant yellow, and more typically are going from green to burnt orange to brown.  If back or side lit, these still produce nice color, but you have to search out the compositions.

So, not entirely pleased with how things were developing in the San Juans, I decided to leave the area two days early.  For my return trip home I decided to drive up through Gunnison to Ohio Pass, and on across Kebler Pass.  I was pleased that there was quite a bit of color left here.  While there is some of the browning of leaves going on, it is not as wide-spread as in the San Juans.  Like the San Juans, the brilliant yellow aspens are hard to find, but with side/back lighting there are quite a few nice stands.

Below are quick shots of The Castles, taken from Ohio Pass (where I crossed paths with +Toby Harriman and +Natalia Stone ).  Also a shot of West Beckwith taken from the western region of Kebler Pass Rd.

I got lightroom installed on my laptop, so these are images lightly processes from RAW, as opposed to in camera JPG as were my previous status shots.___

Foliage Status Update - 10/5/13

This yesterday (Saturday) morning I started sunrise out on County Rd 5 out of Ridgway for a panoramic view of the Sneffels range.  Still, not much yellow has developed.  Lots of green still, but browning out is occurring and a few beginning to go bare.  It is hard to tell how this area is going to develop.

While the area didn't get any additional snow last night, as I had hoped, we did get a hard freeze.  After morning on CR 5 I went back up to the Silver Jack Reservoir area, and the effect of the freeze was easily seen.  Many area of blacked leaves.  Some in the process of turning black are providing a nice rust color to the mix for now, but they wont last long.  While there still is a lot of green on the trees, most of what had been yellow if not now black are well spotted, dulling their brilliance.  I haven't enoughexperie... more »

Attached to this post are two images.  One is showing the blackened leaves on some aspen trees.  The other is of the hillside on the west side of Silver Jack Reservoir.

Foliage Update 10/4

The snow last night left a blanket of 3-5 inches of heavy white frosting.  I went up CR 7 (Dallas Creek Rd) for sunrise and had nice clouds for about a half-hour of shooting, before the clouds thickened and socked in the peaks.  Colors on CR 7 were good, but mixed.  Still some green, but quite a bit of yellow and orange.

Next, I went up to Woods lake.  I'd say that it still has a couple of days to go before it hits peak.  The leaves below the Wilson Peak angle are about a day, maybe two behind the rest.  To images in this post cover Woods Lake.

From there, I scouted other areas without doing much shooting.  Wilsons Mesa looks great.  Very patchy, with all colors.  I'll be going back soon when I think the peak will be out of the clouds.  This area may be good for a week or so - depends on how much goes bare before the other patchesof green ... more »

Drove the well graded Last Dollar Rd (not the 4WD section) to scout from a distance the 4WD section.  The pano in this post is taken from the graded section, looking toward the mountains where the 4WD section is.  As you can see, it is mostly about 5 days or more from peak (my estimate).  There are some brilliant patches, but the bulk is still quite green.  Pano was auto-stitched by Google, from 4 jpg images out of camera, and the cropped a little by me using Google editing tools.

Snow clouds came in killed the sunset light.  More snow to come, but how much will be tomorrow's morning surprise.

Again, note that the attached images are not final processed images, but just some to give folks thinking of coming out an idea of what the color status is.___

Foliage Update

Yesterday went over Hwy 550 from Ridgway to Silverton and back.  The Red Mtn Pass/Irontown area was in pretty good shape.   The attached photo was taken looking down on the area of Irontown on down to Crystal Lake.  There was a little green left, but most areas were at peak color.

Today I was up Owl Creek Pass and the Silver Jack Reservoir area.  The Silver Jack area was great, while the west side of the pass need another day or two to look good, aspen wise.  However, the oak brush is showing excellent oranges and reds.

Weather reports have a storm coming through the San Juans tonight and through tomorrow.  Some have been saying that low temps predicted might freeze the leaves and blacken them.  Also, as I type this there are fairly high winds hitting Ridgway, which potentially could strip leaves off the trees.  So who knows.  We might get agreat lay... more »

New Style Cover Photos - Top Banner Photo

Interesting new photo banners/cover photos at the top of our profiles.  I think I like them, but it takes just the right photo to make them work well.

Max dimensions are 2120x1192 pixels (16:9 ratio).  If you create something with those dimensions in Lightroom, make sure you find something that looks good with the top third cropped out, as that is the default display when someone first comes to your profile.  Users see the rest of the photo when they click on it, or scroll up.   For my current photo, I've cropped it so that the full mountain was below the one-third line in Lightroom.  Full photo, though, isn't that great with that much pure blue sky showing.  If I had a good set of clouds up there it would have worked out better, I think.

BTW, I just noted it shows a different amount on top depending on browser.  My comments above were from testing with Chrome, but I see more of the blue sky (maybe only about one-fourth cropped off) by default when using Firefox.

Above Telluride, Colorado

Coming down Last Dollar Road into Telluride, I came across this scene not too far from their airport.  I believe this is looking over Mountain Village, above Telluride, towards Silver Mountain and the Gold Hill Chutes.

Photo Processing: From a five image bracketed set processed in Nik HDR Efex Pro, using one of its more natural appearing pre-sets.  The original, middle exposed image along with the HDR processed image were sent off to Photoshop CS6 as individual layers.  The HDR layer was placed above the standard, and blended using the luminosity mode and set at about 62% opacity.  This way, the colors and saturation came from the original image, but was able to pull up the detail that was lost in the shadows.  Brought back into Lightroom where a gradient adjustment was added to warm the grass in the foreground a bit, and adjustment brush usedon th... more »

Crystal Mill, Colorado

I went back and reprocessed an image that I originally posted when I first joined G+, and thought I'd share the new version with you.  Taken back in 2010 from a favorite place of mine to visit in Colorado.

Photo Processing: The original of this is from a five shot panorama, each shot bracketed in three exposures.  First, each of the three-bracket sets was processed in Nik HDR Efex Pro, using one of its more natural appearing pre-sets.  Those five HDR tiffs were brought back into Lightroom.  Then, in Lightroom I adjusted and synched the five original images of the panorama set that were taken at the middle exposure to get the best non-HDR image I could.  These five images, along with the five HDR processed images were sent off to Photoshop CS6 for stitching together into two aligned panoramas, one HDR and the other a standard exposed images. The... more »
