For the past few days, I’ve been in New Zealand, watching the folks at Google [x] as they test out their scheme for Internet connection via thousands of high-pressure, solar powered balloons circling the globe in the stratosphere. The initiative is called Project Loon, partly because it’s crazy. But Google is serious about making this happen. Read my dispatch from Kiwi-land here.

Here's the rest of that story & image from yesterday. Which LOTR movie featured this mountain?
I just shared a photo of where I was flying with a chopper yesterday across the central part of the south island of New Zealand, and I thought you'd like to see another image from the same area. This is the mountain you saw in the distance - Mount Cook. I think it was in one of the Lord of the Rings movies? Or maybe The Hobbit? One of you smarties will know! :)
Anyhoo, this shot is from a closer vantage point to one of the roads that heads down into a dead-end at the end of the valley... I have more photos over at www.StuckInCustoms.com ! #HolyKaw

Notifications that sync across devices, and a new Android app
Starting today, Google+ notifications are much easier to use across mobile and desktop. In particular:
- When you read a notification on one device, we'll mark it as read on your other devices
- Likewise: dismissing a notification (with a swipe or a click) does so everywhere, so you can say goodbye to annoying repeats
We've also updated the look and feel of Google+ notifications, including:
- A new bell icon (in the Google Bar, and in the mobile apps) that lets you know if anything's waiting for you
- An updated notifications tray that separates unread from previously-read items
We're rolling out these notifications improvements gradually — first on Android and the web, then on iOS. In the meantime, we're also releasing a new Android app that i... more »

Why Share your Secrets?
I'm heading to Africa today. I wanted to learn how to take the best photographs, and I stumbled onto this video. What's crazy is that one of my favorite photographers +Trey Ratcliff shows you all his secrets.
I mean he actually posts a video that shows you all of his settings, and exactly how you can duplicate his shots. (The shot from the Paris shopping mall has been one of my favorites, this is the first time I've seen how he made it).
Why would he give these secrets away?
I think +Trey Ratcliff does this because he understands something fundamental. He once explained this to me, but honestly we were sharing a glass of wine and I don't remember the details.
Can you think of why a world renowned photographer would give away his images and his secrets?
What do you think?

Every day the Google+ Spam and Abuse team takes down thousands of spammy posts based on a variety of automated signals, but our Google+ community plays a key role in bringing abusive posts to our attention.
Submitting a report has been burdensome: 5 clicks just to report spam. So starting today, we’ve simplified the reporting process and cut the number of clicks to 2.
Next time you spot a post that doesn’t belong on Google+, give the new reporting process a try: Hover over the top right of the post to reveal the options menu, click, and then choose “Report spam or abuse.”
We hope you’ll see it’s easier than ever to help make the Google+ community a safe place for all of us to enjoy.
Report Abuse: 5 clicks v/s 2 clicks

One Sunday morning, January 6th, 2008 I was attending religious services when my cell phone vibrated. As discreetly as possible, I checked the phone and noticed that my phone said "Caller ID unknown". I choose to ignore.
After services, as I was walking to my car with my family, I checked my cell phone messages. The message left was from Steve Jobs. "Vic, can you call me at home? I have something urgent to discuss" it said.
Before I even reached my car, I called Steve Jobs back. I was responsible for all mobile applications at Google, and in that role, had regular dealings with Steve. It was one of the perks of the job.
"Hey Steve - this is Vic", I said. "I'm sorry I didn't answer your call earlier. I was in religious services, and the caller ID said unknown, so I didn't pick up".

Google+ Dashboard - making it easier to manage your online presence
Today millions of businesses use Google+ to connect with their customers in meaningful ways. Many of these businesses also use AdWords to promote their products; Maps to update store info; and YouTube to publish high-quality video content (to name a few). We want to make it easier to manage your online presence - all across Google - so today we're getting started with Google+ Dashboard. After signing in to your Google+ page, you'll now have access to the following Dashboard features:
1) The ability to update your info (like website URLs, store hours and phone numbers) across Maps, Search and Google+ - all from the Overview tab.
2) One place to monitor your Google+ notifications, assign page managers, share photos and videos - even start a Hangout with followers.

Dear Google users—
You may be aware of press reports alleging that Internet companies have joined a secret U.S. government program called PRISM to give the National Security Agency direct access to our servers. As Google’s CEO and Chief Legal Officer, we wanted you to have the facts.
First, we have not joined any program that would give the U.S. government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the U.S. government does not have direct access or a “back door” to the information stored in our data centers. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday.
Second, we provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. Press reports that suggest that Google is providing open-ended ac... more »

V838 Monocerotis heic0617 a-5
To help kick off the Summer sky viewing season in the Northern Hemisphere, here is an Animated #GIF of V838 Monocerotis.
a red variable star in the constellation Monoceros about 20,000 light years (6 kpc) from the Sun. The previously unknown star was observed in early 2002 experiencing a major outburst. The reason for the outburst is still uncertain, but several conjectures have been put forward, including an eruption related to stellar death processes and a merger of a binary star or planets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V838_Monocerotis

The world has lately been making extraordinary progress in lifting people out of extreme poverty. Between 1990 and 2010, their number fell by half as a share of the total population in developing countries a reduction of almost 1 billion people. Governments should adopt as their main new goal the aim of reducing by another billion the number of people in extreme poverty by 2030 http://econ.st/19pNe2z

If you're previewing the new Google Maps, there's an easter egg hidden in outer space. Set your computer's clock back to Thursday, May 9th at 5pm PDT. Then, enter Earth view and zoom out till you see the cloud layer appear over the planet. Now, look northeast of Australia :). You'll see the little surprise we found as we were testing the new maps. And if you zoom out all the way, you'll even see the moon in front of the sun!

How we have systematically bred the nutrition out of our food.
The ancestor of corn had ten times more protein than the corn we eat today. That's just one example.
Over the millennia, farmers have selectively bread food crops for better taste. In the industrial era, we got really efficient at it and bred food that worked best in the industrial food system and contributed to better "food products."
Nutrition took a back seat to all this selective breeding. As a result, our food is nearly devoid of nutrition compared with what our ancestors ate.

Night Light... Donner Lake, 1am, Truckee, California
A good night light makes you feel safer. Lets you see in the dark. Is discreet and doesn't sear your eyeballs out of their sockets if you have to get up in the middle of the night and don't want to run into the door frame.
A good night light kisses you on the forehead and says quite tenderly; "It's time to sleep, sweet thing. Good night." And you always reply "'Night, light. Sweet dreams."
A good night light is timeless.

Are you sitting down? This has just blown me away. The new Google+ Photos section in the app is astounding.
1. Built-in photo editing
2. People tagging
3. Image search
4. Highlights - albums that take the best photos from an album and show them off.
5. A single button to auto enhance photos with a before and after button and option to undo.
6. Rename and delete albums
7. Edit profile and cover photo
Image search has me shaking in disbelief! All the example screenshots are from family photos I have uploaded, none of them have added tags and they are all standard from-camera filenames.

*Getting started with #AutoEnhance and #AutoAwesome *
Many of you have been asking, "How do I apply Auto Enhance and Auto Awesome to my photos?" The good news is, all you have to do is upload some new pictures, and we'll do both automatically:
- To review Google's automatic enhancements, just open a newly-uploaded photo in the desktop lightbox
- Click the new "Enhanced" button to toggle between your original, and Google's enhancements
- If you like the changes, keep them. Otherwise, just uncheck "Auto Enhance" from the More menu
- You can also turn off the feature completely in settings: google.com/settings/plus
It's the same story with Auto Awesome. Just upload some new pics, and we'll get to work:
- Visit your Photos page (plus.google.com/photos), and look for one the five Awesome icons on t... more »
