Some help with irssi?

So I am now discovering irc a bit more (the organisation of #djangocon2015  is taking place on there). Aiming to set up irssi running on a server so I can just check in and out.

Does anyone have any tips I could use before getting going? Here's one page I've found that seems to have some interesting stuff: https://michael.lustfield.net/linux/irssi-using-screen-and-ssh

The code club students have been busy :)

They've added some pages for different editors (currently just Atom and Vim: http://cardiffmathematicscodeclub.github.io/editors/vim.html) and also languages (currently just C).

The code club website is quickly becoming a really nice little site about coding.

I know Kung-Fu!

Just pushed some Sage stuff to trac and +Nathann Cohen pointed out that the commit history was a bit of a mess either side of the upstream dev branch. He just seriously upgraded my git knowledge by nudge me in the right direction of `git rebase -i`. I watched this and I'm 65% confident I've used rebase correctly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLdcqIvnYPs

So cool that you can 'easily' (again this is based on 65% confidence that I've done it right which is way more confident than I've ever felt before), move commits around and squash them etc...

Also: +Jonas Fonseca's tig! Why has no one told me to use that before? Come on internet, I thought we had an agreement that you would be a constant source of excellent and timely information. <drops mic, goes to watch cat videos>

Treating myself by just concentrating on some Sage development after spending a while 'robusting' a proof yesterday.

The reviewers claimed the original version was a bit sloppy (my words not theirs). They were right as the original took 1 board and the current takes about 4.

This is all part of the bunch of things I want to get down over the next 3~4 days before logging off :)

+Jason Young put together some nice data visualisation today. We've been trying to identify particular areas where a heuristic approach performs well. This plot nails it as it's isolated the cluster which has a slightly lower performance which is all easy to see thanks to the mix of scatter and histograms.

On a technical note this was pretty nice as it's all scripted and Jason created over 300 plots of all possible variable combinations and then spent some time flicking through them.

On a less technical note: Look! Shiny!

(Statistical confirmation of what we're seeing is on the way)

Just finished a blog post for my final year project student +Imogen Dunne.

This is the fourth (and potentially last) in a series of posts that I've written reflecting on the pedagogic approaches used in my first year flipped class.

I'm not too sure these posts have been as structured as Imogen would have liked: they've basically been a mind time of my thoughts at the time.

I include the quote from one of my students about the Futurama theorem. (+Dana Ernst you've seen when I posted it on G+ the other day before I think but tagging you nonetheless as you've posted about that result.)

Nice post. I'm trying to reduce my rho.

Stress and Queuing Theory

When you're overwhelmed with work, a small reduction in your workload can be a huge relief. One explanation for this may come from queuing theory.

The amount of stress we feel has more to do with the number of simultaneous demands than the actual amount of work. This is analogous to wait times in a single server queue. When a server is approaching full capacity, a small decrease in its workload results in a larger decrease the wait time and number of items waiting.

If you're working at, say, 90% capacity and you back off to 80% capacity, the number of simultaneous re___Nice post. I'm trying to reduce my rho.

Taking a flick through some of the papers my students have just handed in (a 3 page paper on any mathematical concept using mathematics and code). This has made me smile:

"It has to be said, when I first looked at Keeler’s proof, the whole thing did seem incredibly complicated. But after coding it and using it in 'real life', it is pretty straight forward."

I think that coding mathematics almost always helps fully understand it (and vice versa).

You will soon be able to use Sage to compute Nash equilibria of Normal Form Games

Here's the third blog post in this series describing the #gametheory  stuff +James Campbell and I contributed to +Sage Mathematical Software System.

This isn't in the current release but will be in the next release.

Since posting the other two posts (about cooperative games and matching games) I've had a few people asking about Normal Form Games so hopefully this answers some questions :)

Logbook: L+13, L+14

Another weekend has gone by and it’s time to get ready for a new week of work on humanity’s outpost in space!

As I wrote last weekend, Saturday is the cleaning day. It’s also the day when you have some more time for personal hygiene, when you can take a luxurious bath… ehm, just kidding. But, in space terms, it’s still a luxurious day: you may choose, like I do, to inaugurate your fresh, clean, new towel on Sunday. It’s not exactly shower size, more like what you would use in your home for drying hands, but it’s still nice.

We also get a “shower in a bag” every second day: it’s one of those camping towels that you impregnate with water – most of ours come wrapped in an pouch with the same interface for the water dispenser as the drinks, so you can dispense water directly into the bag without spilling any drops around.

And we have a pouch of liquid soap every second week. So, recapping, wash with your camping towel and the liquid soap, dry with your weekly real towel. We also have a washcloth per week, I typically use it for drying off sweat during exercise for one week, the next week it graduates to spitting towel for toothpaste. I know, I’m high-maintenance: many astronauts just swallow it.

Hey, if the spitting in the towel was already too much information for you, you might want to stop here, because it gets better. How about cutting your fingernails in space? I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I had postponed this operation until yesterday, because I was  a bit intimidated by it. How do you make sure that your don’t lose a cut-off piece of fingernail in the cabin, which could end up in somebody’s eyes? That would be very poor space etiquette. People have told me that you do that close do a ventilation return grid, but I wasn’t 100% convinced that it would go smoothly. Anyway, I’m happy to report that it worked great. I found a return grid with a very fine mesh and a robust airflow and I carefully cut my fingernails just in front of it and sure enough, all the pieces went in the right direction and stuck to the surface of the grid. In the end I only had to vacuum clean.

Another thing we like to do on the weekend, if it sort of matches the prescribed usage rate of food, is to refill our boxes of dishes in Node 1.

Food supplies are organized by type, like meats, vegetables, fruits and nuts, breakfast, etc… when we get a new package out, like the one I’m holding in the picture, we scan it and move it to the “deployed food” location in the inventory system, so the ground always knows where we stand with food. Little boxes, like the ones you can see in the left part of the pictures, serve as our kitchen shelves to store the  deployed food packages in Node 1. There’s a label on the front of each box to note the date on which that type of food was last replenished: this way we can make sure we’re not going through the food too fast!

Today I have take over from Terry what we call “The Duty”, a weekly rotation involving a number of administrative and housekeeping responsibilities: turning on the lights in the morning, turning them off in the evening, closing the shutters of the Cupola windows at night, but also running our Daily Planning Conferences with the control centers and keeping an eye on the Daily Summary. This latter is a document that is uploaded every morning to ISS and contains some critical information for the safety of the Station (for the case we had a major failure and we went Loss of Com with the ground), as well as a Q&A section: questions for the crew and answers to questions the crew had earlier. It also has the manning roster of all the control centers for the shifts of the day, so we can always know who is on console in Houston, Huntsville, Munich, Tsukuba and Moscow.

One of the first projects involved building the website for it: http://cardiffmathematicscodeclub.github.io/

Just made this 4 minute video after my cool students taught me about gource which lets you transform git repos in to visual representations of the commits (I have a feeling I'm late to the party).

You can see me set up the bare bones of the site and then get out of the way as the students took over. Some highlights include a drive by bootstrapping and then some jekyll with a 'git commit -A' that got a bit out of control before the current version of the site.

A big thanks to +Adam Pohl, +Alex Carney and Timothy who have been doing the most work on this (in particular Timothy who seems to always be tidying other people's mess).

So neat...

Very excited to say that +James Campbell and I will be attending a 'Sage days'.

This all comes as a result of the very kind financial support being offered by the organisers.

Looking forward to meeting some Sage developers who have been very helpful to James and I with the work we've done over the past couple of months getting #gametheory  in to +Sage Mathematical Software System.

The actual topic matter of this Sage days is coincidentally closer to my PhD work but this is a workshop that is apparently open to 'new developers' so I'm sure we'll both learn a lot.
