Oxfam America145,671This week, Super Bowl winner +Anquan Boldin and fellow NFL superstars Larry Fitzgerald and Roddy White are in Senegal with Oxfam. They're visiting Oxfam programs in action and working side-by-side with Senegalese communities on projects to increase their income and provide for their families.  Anquan, Larry and Roddy want to meet you, their fans, and tell you about the amazing people they’ve met and the important work they’re doing with Oxfam to help people facing extreme poverty. These players have been pitching in with Oxfam since 2011, and this is Anquan and Larry’s second trip to Africa with Oxfam, following their visit to Ethiopia last spring. This trip is just one of the many ways they contribute to communities off the football field, and we hope you’ll join us to hear how you, too, can help make a difference. Use the hashtag #TeamOxfam and submit your questions on this event page or on Twitter.NFL Players Live from Senegal for #TeamOxfam - Google+ Hangout on Air2013-03-14 20:00:00180
NASA2,831,699Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008311

Here's the number of strategies in the Axelrod library (https://github.com/Axelrod-Python/Axelrod) against time.

The library is 287 days old today and it's been awesome to get so many contributions :)

Dusautoir has retired from international rugby! I did not see that coming...

Apparently happened after a meeting with the new coach: Noves.

Probably one of the best thoroughbred technical tacklers the game has ever seen.

EDIT: Here's an English article http://www.espn.co.uk/rugby/story/_/id/14291456/france-captain-thierry-dusautoir-retires-international-rugby

*New blog post: taking a close look at the current winning strategy of the Axelrod tournament.*

The `EvolvedLookerUp` strategy was fine tuned through an evolutionary algorithm. There's a brilliant blog post describing it here: http://mojones.net/evolving-strategies-for-an-iterated-prisoners-dilemma-tournament.html

*In this blog post I take a look at how well it performs outside of the environment it evolved in.*

(TLDR: It still does pretty well.)

Amazing achievement by the group.

Huge congratulations to +Paul Harper who worked very hard to get his vision of the embedded modelling unit in place and well done to the post docs who work super hard to make it the success it is :)

It was a really nice evening :)

Still pinching ourselves after winning an award last night for the Times Higher Education Innovation and Technology prize at a very enjoyable and glitzy ceremony in London. Would not have been possible without a wonderful team of researchers (post-docs who do all the hard work) and working with some amazingly talented people in NHS Wales who make it all happen by translating the research into practice.___Amazing achievement by the group.

Some of you know that I'm currently working on a book tentatively titled Flipped Learning in the College Classroom: A User's Guide for Stylus Publishing, that should be out in 2016 or early 2017. One of the things I want to highlight in the book is how flipped learning can look like lots of different things and can fit into many different disciplines. So I'm soliciting the stories and use cases of any college instructor out there who is using flipped learning, to include in the book. I've set up the Google Form below for people click in and tell me about what they're doing. If it stands out, then I'll try my best to get your name, institution, and story into the book somewhere.

Tonight I used networkx to draw a Markov chain for the first time (https://networkx.github.io/). Very nicely impressed. You can see a 2 dimensional one on my white board as well as 2 and 3 dimensional ones drawn super straightforwardly with networkx.

I can probably set the layout for the states/nodes I should look in to that for 2 dimensional chains at least... I'll figure that out and then maybe write a blog post about it...

Is there a simpler way to compute the steady state distribution of a continuous Markov chain using Python?

https://gist.github.com/drvinceknight/0c91130639a6bcc9e085

(The steady state of a continuous Markov chain is a probability vector pi that is the solution to piQ=0 where Q is the transition rate matrix).

During the editor off Adam (one of the code club stalwarts) pushed his first atom theme to atom.io/themes/ and finished his presentation by 'dropping the mic' and showing off my favourite shipit github emoji behind the screen :)

It was really cool because he even handled a tiny git mess on the fly during his presentation.
