Marhaba Ya' Mustafa ﷺ1,067A brief description of the Meraj-un-Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلمName Shab e MerajAlternative Name Isra and Mi'rajJust one year before his exodus from Makkah to Madina, on the 27th night of Rajab, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم had a unique experience in the history of all religions. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم, accompanied by Angel Gabriel was taken for Night Journey - (ISRA) from Makkah to Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. There he led a congregation of the souls of all the ear lier Prophets صلى الله عليه و سلم. Then accompanied by Angel Gabriel he had the Ascension - (MERAJ) to Heavens. In the heavens he met again with the Prophets صلى الله عليه و سلم individually. Then he was taken to see the Paradise and the Hell. He was shown what would be the fate of the humans after the Day of Judgment. How the Believers and the Righteous would be rewarded in the Paradise and also how the non-believers and the wicked would be chastised in the Hell. After seeing several important divine Signs (Ayaat) he was led by Gabriel to the Sid’rah (The Berry Tree).Gabriel stopped there. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم proceeded from there to the Divine Proximity. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم had the Vision of God, Lord of the Universe. Five obligatory prayers were ordained by the way of Thanksgiving. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم was brought back to the earth and to his own place before the Dawn prayers in the same night. The most important things we believe about the Meraj are noted below:1) The night journey (ISRA) and the Ascension (MERAJ) both did not take place “spiritually” nor they were merely in a “dream”, as a few people argue. They took place with the “body and soul,” and the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم was fully awake.Qur’an says that:“Glorified be He Who Carried His servant by night.......” (17:1)The word ‘Abad’ (servant) applies to a ‘person’ with his body and soul. Therefore, to say that the ascension was only spiritual is wrong. In fact it was with the body and soul and in full awareness.2) The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم did not go for Meraj for seeing Angel Gabriel in his original form as some people try to explain. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم had the Vision of his Lord and that is the essence of the Meraj as believed by a majority of the Companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم had seen Angel Gabriel in his original for at least twice on the earth earlier. Hence, there was no need to see him again by ascension to heavens.3) What will happen in the Paradise and the Hell after the Day of Judgment was shown to the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم as if it was happening before his eyes. Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem, ascended to heaven and returned. ~ Believers!2013-06-07 04:00:0049

Game changer

Charge your electric car in 15 minutes with a battery that lasts 20 years

Electric cars will be able to be charged in just 15 minutes thanks to a new rapidly charging battery that’s been invented by researchers in Singapore.

They have created a battery which can be recharged up to 70% in just two minutes – and with further work will be able to be used in electric vehicles.

The small, circular battery can also last for up to 20 years, the scientists at Nanyang Technological University said. It will be able to last for more than 10,000 charging cycles, much more than the batteries of today.

In 2001, the data operational system was linked to the Badr-B satellite, beginning regular transmission of digital imagery of the region to NIO headquarters in Karachi. In 2002, SUPARCO scientists visited the base, where they set up and installed an advanced, supercomputer-equipped facility, run by the NIO and SUPARCO's scientists. In 2005, Pakistan Air Force engineers and scientists built a small airstrip, and a control room to monitor flights to and from Pakistan. As of 2010, the Pakistan Government has given a green light to expand the JAS facility into a permanent lead operational base.

Anthony Johnson was a Negro from modern-day Angola. He was brought to the US to work on a tobacco farm in 1619. In 1622 he was almost killed when Powhatan Indians attacked the farm. 52 out of 57 people on the farm perished in the attack. He married a female black servant while working on the farm.

When Anthony was released he was legally recognized as a “free Negro” and ran a successful farm. In 1651 he held 250 acres and five black indentured servants. In 1654, it was time for Anthony to release John Casor, a black indentured servant. Instead Anthony told Casor he was extending his time. Casor left and became employed by the free white man Robert Parker.

Anthony Johnson sued Robert Parker in the Northampton Court in 1654. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own slave of their own race. Thus Casor became the first permanent slave and Johnson the first slave owner.

Whites still could not legally hold a black servant as an indefinite slave until 1670. In that year, the colonial assembly passed legislation permitting free whites, blacks, and Indians the right to own blacks as slaves.

By 1699, the number of free blacks prompted fears of a “Negro insurrection.” Virginia Colonial ordered the repatriation of freed blacks back to Africa. Many blacks sold themselves to white masters so they would not have to go to Africa. This was the first effort to gently repatriate free blacks back to Africa. The modern nations of Sierra Leone and Liberia both originated as colonies of repatriated former black slaves.

However, black slave owners continued to thrive in the United States.

By 1830 there were 3,775 black families living in the South who owned black slaves. By 1860 there were about 3,000 slaves owned by black households in the city of New Orleans alone.___

Opal: a photonic crystal

This opal from South Australia is beautiful... but why does it look like this?  It's actually a photonic crystal!

Opal is made of small spheres of silicon dioxide, the same stuff as quartz.   These spheres are between 150 to 300 nanometers in diameter, and they're arranged in a regular pattern.

When light waves pass through an opal, funny stuff happens when the distance between these spheres is half the wavelength of the light.  Imagine water waves trying to fight their way through a regular pattern of round logs standing in the water and you'll get the picture.  The waves start to bounce back and interfere with themselves.

So, light of certain wavelengths winds up bouncing back off the opal instead of going through!  Since the opal is not perfectly the same everywhere, different parts reflect different colors of light.

When a repeating pattern strongly affects the behavior of light, it's called a photonic crystal.  Nowadays people are making artificial photonic crystals.   Way back in 1887, the English physicist Lord Rayleigh experimented with stacking layers of different materials to make light of certain wavelengths interfere with itself and bounce back.  When this happens, we now call it a photonic band gap.   But Rayleigh only got this effect to occur in a single direction - at right angles to the layers.

Now people can make 3d arrays of tiny spheres that act as photonic crystals.  We might be able to use them to make color-changing paints and inks.  But the first commercial products involving photonic crystals are photonic-crystal fibers - a bit like ordinary optical fibers, but different.

Photonic crystals are one example of a metamaterial - a material whose optical or electronic properties depend not just on their composition, but from carefully designed tiny structures.

In the Middle Ages, some thought an opal could make you invisible if you wrapped it in a fresh bay leaf and held it in your hand.  Now people are designing metamaterials that can act like a 'cloak of invisibility'.  But more about that later.

Puzzle: I said opal is made of tiny spheres of silicon dioxide (called silica), but what's in the spaces between these spheres?

I don't know - I only have a clue.  Wikipedia says opal is a hydrated form of amorphous silica, usually containing between 6% and 10% water.  Maybe the spaces between the spheres is a mix of silica and water?

The ritual dancers known as "nestinari" are very unique - only a couple of villages in Southern Bulgaria and Northern Greece still practice the dance on hot coals. The dancers are supposedly driven to a trance-like state by a rhythmic beating of the drums accompanied by the sound of bagpipes, and then while holding an icon of St. Constantine and St. Helen they dance barefoot on the hot coals while chanting, making all kinds of noises, and sometimes screaming out visions and predictions of the future. At the end of the dance the soles of their feet have no burns whatsoever. The dance usually takes place at the beginning of June. Both men and women can do it, and it is said one has to be of pure heart to be able to carry it out. Despite its celebration of Christian saints, this really is a pagan tradition, that the Orthodox Church does not condone.
