The rhetoric justifying the coverage of what you can pay for in otherwise free-to-play MMOs is gradually changing.
When most MMO players were achievers, developers could sell anything that had no tangible, gameplay effect: cosmetic-only "vanity" items (such as fancy pets) and services (such as name changes). Since last year (in the West — the Far East got here a while ago), when the tipping point was reached and socialisers asserted their dominance, the floodgates have opened. We're now seeing charges for goods and services across the board, in multiple dimensions. Three of these dimensions seem to be of particular appeal.

Selling web ads as time not space
I just saw some mind-bending work Chartbeat is about to release about measuring the time users spend exposed to an ad online.
As background, to quote Chartbeat CEO Tony Haile: “Chartbeat monitors activity by checking in with users every second and looking for signals (mouse movement, key strokes, etc) that show they are actively consuming the content in front of them. This means they can measure how long readers spend actively engaged on a page and what parts they’re reading. Because of this Chartbeat knows how long are actively reading while an ad is in view — both for an average user and the cumulative time of all users.” Chartbeat then did some internal research that found high correlation between engaged time exposed and a user’s ability to recall the advertiser’s brand and message. Job vacancies haven’t come down from 2008 levels despite 30% greater unemployment (the Beveridge curve has a tail). Number of interviews and time to hire has doubled. Companies spend 40% or more of revenue on payroll and yet average turnover rates have climbed to 15%. Simple multiplication: *6% of revenue is wasted every year.*
My Bottom Line: companies seem to be spending too much time and too much money on only hiring rock stars... And they are making decisions based on gut feeling rather than data.

Excerpts from a post by +Doc Searls that explains the ongoing problem with Identity, Authentication, and Namespaces. Basically, yet another example of why we need to leverage the in-built architecture of the Web with regards to Web-scale verifiable Identity.

MIT researches dropped off nearly a thousand Android tablets in two Ethiopian villages in boxes. These kids had never seen:

A reporter asked me today if +YouTube and other video sites should be self-censored or censored by the government to remove "all materials" that could be of help to would-be terrorists, after claims that the Boston bombing brothers supposedly were inspired and trained from Internet videos. I told him that not only was the concept abhorrent on civil liberties grounds and impractical, but could actually be counterproductive by making it more difficult for authorities to see what sorts of materials were circulating -- since censoring of public sites would not eliminate the items in question, only drive them underground.

Some weekend food for thought - should we regulate the ability of firms to access social media posts?
I had a fascinating discussion with Helen Kennedy from Leeds University this week.
She approached me about an interview to support her research and book about social media monitoring.
During our interview, she was particularly interested on my view, and the view of the industry on the status of “public” social media posts.
In particular, she wanted to know if I felt the industry would (or could) be regulated so that consumers had the right to decide if their social media posts could be monitored or captured by social media monitoring firms.
It raises a very interesting question – how private are our public posts?
