helen sotiriadis150,849do you want to know what working with autocad looks like? this thursday-to-friday (check below for dates/times), i'm going to hold an on-air hangout in which i'll draw a simple floor plan, from start to finish.  i'll limit myself to the basic commands that i teach in my autocad essentials seminar. i'll demonstrate a simple workflow, using the software as-is, while working at a normal pace. obviously, further knowledge of this software allows one to work much more efficiently, but for now, i want to show how far one can go with the basics only. if you would like to join me in the hangout to chat as i go along, let me know. if you know someone else who might be interested, please share this with them. Dear Internet,

Due to an accident involving boiling-hot soup and a paralyzed body, I won’t be around much this month. I am not in danger of dying, nor is there much anyone can do for me except perhaps posting particularly amusing and non-challenging bits of text and images. Due to red tape, the burn specialists won’t be able to look at me until Thursday at the earliest… love that red tape.

Colin and I will post general updates at least once a week. I am, however, in considerable pain and discomfort, and don’t have much energy. Our current project involves hiring a new aide. We love Y. very much, but she will no longer be involved in my care. I have second-degree burns over 5-10% of my body, and currently appear to be auditioning for The Mummy.

Talk to y’all in a month or two.

Here's that crowdfunding thing I've been talking about -- I'll post at greater length in a day or two, but for now please feel free to check out the link -- rewards for supporting my crafting begin at $1 a month (a photo journal), $3 for a 30% discount and $10 for new earrings every month and so on...

I doubt Colin and I will ever make a profit at this -- but I'd like to break even.

Huzzah! Just placed my first jewelry supply order involving troy ounces -- I'm a tad nervous, but...

See, puppy just chewed up my not-a-wedding-ring, which made it the 4th replacement in 5 years. Even using custom bended wood, which is far cheaper than metal, it's getting pricy to replace them.

So +Colin Gerbode and I have been edging nervously towards silver- and copper-smithing for three years now.  +Abigail Markov's amazing work has been making my maker's fingers itch --- well, I strongly suspect that if I'm doing my own designs rather than copying her (oy!), she'll cheer me on.

I don't plan on shifting the focus of my work, I just want to make a few small pieces to wear and incorporate into my beading.

Solden's a friend and an inspiring craftman. My $1 a month donation via Partron is feeling lonely all by itself. Give it some company!

Folks, this is quite simply the best and clearest way to support your artistic friends. For anywhere from $12 to lots and lots per year (that's $1 a month), you can let them know what you value their art/writing/crafting and that it matters to you... and most of them offer rewards!

I support seven different artists to the grand amount of $10 a month, ranging from +Amanda Palmer to Neil deGrasse Tyson, and in return I get limited posts and a fair amount of affection.

So, I have a strong desire to hang out and chat with friends, and I have obtained a good microphone/headset — and then, my damned energy budget has informed me that working with a new aide has priority over hanging out with friends for another week or two.

In other news, we succeeded in creating some rings — still rough draft level, but there’s promise!

This is what we're offering this month -- a Byzantine set in obsidian, garnet and carnelian. The earrings are $10, bracelet $25, necklace $50 -- rewards ship at the end of the month, once pledges clear. This is designed for ongoing support,  but you're welcome to pledge a dollar a set for support and then just jump up to the reward desired on sets you really want.

There's a new set of jewelry up for a reward choice -- you can  pick a pair of earrings for as little as $10 a month and get an exclusive photo stream for $1... I'm not looking to make a living here, but every pledge helps me justify the time and expense. Please -- so many of you have asked, how can I help?" This is how... $12 a year or $120 or just once for a favorite piece....

This is me asking for support, and offering my pieces in trade.

A chance to share your home with a true work of art.

This is an older painting (as one of my collectors said "from your impressionistic period"... :). There is something impressionistic in it, isn't there? No clear edges, everything flowing into everything -- the sunlight and tomatoes reflected in the bottle, the olive oil filtering this light before it falls on the right side of tomatoes, and the tomatoes just enjoying the company and the warmth.

For a long time, it has been brightening our own kitchen wall... It's a very kitchen-y painting, after all -- filled with light, the atmosphere of a summer Sunday, the anticipation of Italian-style brunch after a visit to farmers market.

I have now released it exclusively as a "thank you" painting for people who support my work on Patreon -- just click here to reserve it as your own reward (and for your own kitchen): http://lenalevin.com/gal/Patr-2/12. ___A chance to share your home with a true work of art.

O.k., guys... we just figured out that -- excepting a dozen lovely family visits -- I see people that aren't medical personnel on average... 1.2 times a year.

There are many reasons, but... this is a tad extreme, even for two hermits.

Still, we're putting off the search for a new aide for a month or so -- for the sake of Colin's sanity, if nothing else. We need some help, but it may make more sense to hire a competent housekeeper and admit that Colin will never be comfortable with anyone taking care of me but him and/or just get someone in a few days a week to give him a break but not have a situation where he isn't thoroughly in charge.

Only for a month for the sake of my sanity, because as much as I love him, I need not to be the lead in a modern day Bluebeard. Online friends and cyber-family help, but...

I have the distinct honor of having five Levin originals. This is an excellent opportunity.

Good morning, dear friends, and fair time of day. I have some news -- over the last month, I've been working on creating this opportunity for you to have an original painting of mine in your home with your budget barely noticing it. All the explanations of how it works are on my main Patreon page linked below!

The set of paintings participating in this first experimental stage is limited, so please check it out NOW if you are interested -- it's all first-come, first-serve.

And please share this post if you know someone who might be interested in this opportunity -- it will be greatly appreciated!___I have the distinct honor of having five Levin originals. This is an excellent opportunity.

These are our lovely Jamberry nail wraps, done in three different patterns. They are also 1) the only time I’ve spent over $100 on myself in one go (I got eight styles to play with) on anything other than computers and crafting components in over a decade and 2) the single most traditionally feminine thing (possibly tying with a red lace nightgown) I’ve bought ever. Ever.

Thank you, +Abigail Markov.

Our very first (well, first after taking a break for a few years to learn what the hell we were doing) metal-smithing project! Two shades of copper twisted together through the Magic of Power Tools (cue dramatic music and a goofy grin on Colin's face.)

So, any interest in stacking rings or simple open twist patterns?

In copper, we're talking a $10-$20 price range for the simplest designs (hooking four strands of copper to a drill chuck is perhaps the easiest crafting we've ever done; more complex effects will cost more accordingly.) Silver will be in the three-figure range once we start with that.

Talk to y’all in a month or two.___

Since I got an interesting question about what someone "should" charge, here's my formula: 2x cost of materials + $25/hour labor (skilled) or $12.50 (unskilled) + donated (mine.)

Why is my time donated?

Most couldn't afford me if I charged for my creative time -- three figures were often involved in my old contract hourly rates. True, I only charged for what could be seen or understood -- the many hours/years worth of research and skill-building came for free, so to speak. (In other words, I'd only charge clients 2-12 hours a week, but would read, write and research 60-80 hours a week.)

Still do,  through it's more like 20 hours a week these days. Damned disability/illness/reality.

So, that's how I figure out what to charge. How do y'all do it?

Our latest spectrum piece is grey-green in jasper, serpentine and agate comprised of 6mm rounds joined by 4mm copper beads and fittings. Soon to be listed along with matching earrings. Default shipping length is 24", but we'll customize the length from 18" to 28" by adding sturdy (and light, and gorgeous) copper dyed aluminum chain around .the back of the neck. Pure copper chain is available by request, but it's the real thing and hence will turn your skin green. We'll have two of these for sale -- the second will be similar but not identical. $75 for the set, necklace and earrings.

One matching bracelet is also available for $25 but it's currently residing on my wrist.

We did this for Moan Lisa's new art project. Thought y'all might like it.

Serpentine and silver-plate centerpiece, surrounded by copper and millefiori glass necklace on a watercolored silk scarf. On the theme of 'Romance and War'. ___We did this for Moan Lisa's new art project. Thought y'all might like it.
