helen sotiriadis150,118do you want to know what working with autocad looks like? this thursday-to-friday (check below for dates/times), i'm going to hold an on-air hangout in which i'll draw a simple floor plan, from start to finish.  i'll limit myself to the basic commands that i teach in my autocad essentials seminar. i'll demonstrate a simple workflow, using the software as-is, while working at a normal pace. obviously, further knowledge of this software allows one to work much more efficiently, but for now, i want to show how far one can go with the basics only. if you would like to join me in the hangout to chat as i go along, let me know. if you know someone else who might be interested, please share this with them. Dear Internet,

Due to an accident involving boiling-hot soup and a paralyzed body, I won’t be around much this month. I am not in danger of dying, nor is there much anyone can do for me except perhaps posting particularly amusing and non-challenging bits of text and images. Due to red tape, the burn specialists won’t be able to look at me until Thursday at the earliest… love that red tape.

Colin and I will post general updates at least once a week. I am, however, in considerable pain and discomfort, and don’t have much energy. Our current project involves hiring a new aide. We love Y. very much, but she will no longer be involved in my care. I have second-degree burns over 5-10% of my body, and currently appear to be auditioning for The Mummy.

Talk to y’all in a month or two.

So -- three sets of these earrings will be up for sale. The necklace? Not so much. Mine. It's mine. I would be willing to build a variant for $100 -- those bead strands are made from over a dozen different gemstone chips and rounds. That's what it would cost to build another from scratch -- though I have the dozen bits required, and so can make a fair profit.

But it took three years and having a great deal of family support to gather together my bits and bobs to the point where I  can offer the piece for less than $100. "But I could build that!" Yes, you could, and the cost for the raw materials, all twelve gemstones in their various shapes, and the metal for the fittings, would run you around $100, to build just the one.

Let's not forget the six months to a year you'd spend learning how to put the damned thing together.

And that is why $100 isg... more »

Things I need to remember when I'm feeling useless...

I have left my house 7 times this year. 6 of those times, people have asked about my jewelry. 5 have paid me (some quite decent amounts) to take what I was wearing that day and wear it home. I initiated exactly one of those conversations.

I may not have the energy to market my jewelry on a regular basis, but it's probably worth doing the occasional sale.

I need to remember this. Also, sitting by the gazebo is nice.

Since I got an interesting question about what someone "should" charge, here's my formula: 2x cost of materials + $25/hour labor (skilled) or $12.50 (unskilled) + donated (mine.)

Why is my time donated?

Most couldn't afford me if I charged for my creative time -- three figures were often involved in my old contract hourly rates. True, I only charged for what could be seen or understood -- the many hours/years worth of research and skill-building came for free, so to speak. (In other words, I'd only charge clients 2-12 hours a week, but would read, write and research 60-80 hours a week.)

Still do,  through it's more like 20 hours a week these days. Damned disability/illness/reality.

So, that's how I figure out what to charge. How do y'all do it?

Our latest spectrum piece is grey-green in jasper, serpentine and agate comprised of 6mm rounds joined by 4mm copper beads and fittings. Soon to be listed along with matching earrings. Default shipping length is 24", but we'll customize the length from 18" to 28" by adding sturdy (and light, and gorgeous) copper dyed aluminum chain around .the back of the neck. Pure copper chain is available by request, but it's the real thing and hence will turn your skin green. We'll have two of these for sale -- the second will be similar but not identical. $75 for the set, necklace and earrings.

One matching bracelet is also available for $25 but it's currently residing on my wrist.

Spent the evening sorting brandy citrine -- let the drooling begin!

Previous patrons get first shot at the finished piece, and we can discuss the price -- but the odds are that we're not letting it out the door for less than $100.

Thinking a triple strand focal centerpiece and a progressive spectrum frame.

We built two pairs of stunning flame earrings (they coordinate well with the recent necklace) and four custom bracelets for the staff at my one of specialist doctors' office (I believe deeply in keeping nurses and admin staff happy.) Also bagged up a dozen pieces for my brother's annual burning man pilgrimage.

If there's interest in similar wooden pieces, I'll make them available -- price range, $7.50 to $35 depending on complexity. (U.S. shipping inclusive.)

Each chip and round progresses from white-yellow quartz to fire red agate,. Pendant is beautifully faceted multi-hued glass. I'll put it up on the Etsy store in a bit, but consider this a preview,  Any reasonable offer considered. (It would cost around a hundred dollars and considerable time to rebuild it if you were buying the pieces at retail cost.)

The length  can be made from 18" to 28" with a lovely copper hued metal chain around the back.

And that is why $100 is giving Plussers a discount. I can make three or four once I've bought enough for the one, and that means I get to do this for something more than just the love of doing it.

That said, is anyone interested? Earrings are $18.50; I'll put up a listing tomorrow/soonish. Necklace available on request.___

Buttons

A special service of CircleCount.com is the following button.

The button shows the number of followers you have directly in a small button. You can add this button to your website, like the +1-Button of Google or the Like-Button of Facebook.

You can add this button directly in your website. For more information about the CircleCount Buttons and the description how to add them to another page click here.
