The Story Behind The Photo
Sometimes the story behind the photo is a simple one. I was looking through my photos from my trip to the California coast and Big Sur last December, and I came across a photo that I barely remember taking. I’m assuming I’m not the only one that goes through their photos (like I did after the trip) and heads straight to the photos that they know were some of their favorites just by looking at the thumbnails in a grid view. The problem with that is sometimes you miss photos that may be really good because they don’t immediately jump out at you as a small thumbnail. That’s exactly what happened here.
The Story
I woke up one morning to shoot sunrise along the Big Sur coastline. I was above the fog layer and wound up chasing photos for about 10 miles down the coast, stopping constantly to shoot different views. As the sun came up I was driving... more »

My favorite channel, now with light painting
From a recent solo night photography outing, which I spent shivering in the chill of the night air, doing light painting / long exposures and experimenting with star photography. The night was quite clear, which helped. The fog and low clouds helped tame the light pollution of nearby towns.

Photography Q&A With Automotive Photographer Tim Wallace On The Grid
I'm really excited today to have a special guest in the studio (and on our live show The Grid), Tim Wallace. Tim is an automotive photographer from the UK, and he's got some awesome stuff to share. We're going to talk about things like how you stay fresh when, say, you have to photograph the same exact car, but for a different person. I personally want to ask Tim how he got into this area of photography and does he feel he's in too small of a niche area of photography.
If you haven't heard Tim before, he's an incredibly insightful and great guest to have on the show so make sure you tune in in just under an hour.

Oddly enough, I photographed on this beach for hours over the course of two days with +Brian Matiash and it wasn't until the last 10 minutes while walking with +Patricia Davidson that I actually saw the face on this rock. What's wrong with me? (don't answer that)

It's what we do
There's something very special about the nature and landscape photographer. When writing off our own bodies and well-being to keep our tripods stable just to get. the. shot. is commonplace, you know that something's up. We climb, crawl, slide, jump, and dig to get the shot. We have no problems getting soaked with saltwater, baked in the desert sun, or get scraped up against a mountain... just as long as our camera stays dry, still and keeps exposing.
It's just what we do.
I was really happy to capture a moment that encapsulates my point. Here is +Matt Kloskowski taking refuge on an ocean rock as the tide came sweeping in. Now, I've seen Matt stand at the edge of much taller cliffs overlooking the ocean. I've also seen him subsequently get drenched from waves crashing and exploding against those cliffs. But he always ... more »

Free +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Presets - Tonal Contrast Effect
Here's some more free presets: http://mattyk.me/14MXn70
One of my favorite effects in Photoshop plug-ins is the Tonal Contrast effect. +onOne Software Perfect Effects has it, and Nik has it as well. But I know that lots of people still don’t use 3rd party plug-ins, so I set out to try to recreate the effect in Lightroom. After trying a bunch of different combinations I think I came pretty close.
Now, there’s definitely something in the “special sauce” that the plug-in companies use. So if you have the plug-ins (or are thinking of getting one), I’d still use them. Given the choice, I’d use the Perfect Effects Tonal Contrast effect before I’d ever use the one that I have here. But for those that don’t, this is a great alternative to help get that gritty/edgy/contrasty look right in Lightroom. Plus, ... more »

Your Camera Takes Really Nice Photos
I wrote a post about this on my blog today (http://mattyk.me/Vul2Yp) but I wanted to share here too. This past weekend I saw some family I hand't seen in a while so I brought my camera along with me to grab some photos for them. Plus, as a writer, once you use one family member in a book, guess what. All of the others start to ask when they’re going to get in a book too :)
Anyway, I took the photo here of my cousin and his son. Well, once I showed him, he loved the photo. So much so that an older aunt of mine heard, and came over to see it. And wouldn’t ya know it… what’s the first thing she said? “Wow! Your camera takes such great pictures!”. What do you say to that? Especially when it’s one of your aunts. I resisted the urge to say one of my favorite comebacks to that statement. A comeback I heard years ago and have yet to hear a bett... more »

Free Lightroom Black and White HDR Presets
There's some new HDR B&W Presets on my blog today: http://mattyk.me/Vj8OfP
Some of the most popular presets I have are the #HDR presets I created for #lightroom 4. As I looked through my website stats, I also realized that some of the other most popular presets were the black and white presets for both landscapes and portraits. Then it hit me – these could go perfectly together. People love the grit, edginess, and style that HDR presets give. And people love the look and feel of black and white. So why not put ‘em together?
So that’s just what I did this week. You’ll find they work best on landscape, travel and outdoor photos. I thought of doing some portrait ones, but HDR doesn’t look that great on people. They have 2 levels of intensity (Light, Strong). I tried 3, like I usually do, but there wasn’t enough... more »

A Landscape Photo Shoot Gone Bad
Everyone Shows Off Their Good Photos Right? But how many show off their bad ones. Well, I wrote a whole post with my not-so-good photos from my recent Death Valley trip with +Ricardo Lagos, +Brian Matiash, +Amy Heiden and +Brian Bonham.
It's really just meant to be a funny/make ya' chuckle post. I think (ok, hope) everyone has these types of photos. And honestly, I think it's part of the shooting process. We arrive at a location and we start warming up and working the location or people (whether it's landscapes or portraits), to zero in on that shot that we love.
So, for me, it's a totally natural process to take lots of bad photos :)
There's more at my blog (sadly, many more) if you want to see: http://mattyk.me/144xOgy

5 Quick Photo Observations From My Recent Death Valley Trip
Hey everyone. I’m on my flight heading back to the East coast from my recent Death Valley photography trip. As I was flying I was thinking of the trip and came up with 5 quick photography-related observations about my trip:
An Unexpected Lens Choice
I borrowed a Nikon 24mm f/1.4 lens to try out for this trip. I put it on while shooting my first sunrise last Friday and expected I would change out lenses pretty quickly because of it’s lack of zoom. You know what? I ended up keeping the lens on nearly all morning and only took it off when I wanted to put my longer 70-200 lens on. Then, for sunset, I again kept it on the whole time. I totally didn’t expect that and I’ll write more later this week on my blog (www.mattk.com) why I think it happened.
There Should Be An Alarm On My Camera<... more »

Why You Need A Strong Tripod
I wrote a post over on my blog on why you need a strong tripod (http://mattyk.me/TZ5cPw). Don't get me wrong. I love travel tripods. I use mine all the time and I have many photos I love because I was able to carry along a small compact tripod. But I can't deny that when it gets windy out, the smaller tripods can be a problem. My Brother Is Running 220 Miles Over 4 Days for New Jersey
Link: http://run4nj.org/?page_id=81
Hi everyone. I wanted to take a quick break from the usual Photoshop and photography stuff to tell you a little about some personal stuff that my brother is doing for the state of New Jersey. I’m sure by now that you’ve heard about the devastation that hit the East Coast of the US recently. Well, you may or may not know that I was actually born and raised in New Jersey (very close to the coastal areas that were hit hard). Many places that my family now lives in, has lived, and that I still visit today were hit pretty badly. Areas along the coast (sorry “shore” if you’re from NJ ), where I spent my childhood summers are now gone.
Well, I’m extremely happy and proud to say that my brother, Ed Kloskowski, is doing something to help. He’s created an organization called Run4NJ. On Nove... more »

Why So Many People Love Landscape Photography
I wrote a blog post today (http://mattyk.me/RRSGDi) with some thoughts on the topic. Basically, have you ever heard about (or see) one of those popular landscape photography locations that’s absolutely packed with people? Ever wonder why everyone is standing there taking the same exact photo that maybe tens of hundreds of thousands of photographers have taken before? If you haven’t witnessed it personally, then you’ve probably seen it. And if you haven’t, then just check out the photo above taken at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. Believe it or not, you’re not even seeing the other 50+ people that were to the right of me in that photo. So with crowds often like this, and so many photos looking similar to each other, why do so many people love landscape photography?
To me, I think it's the process of actuall... more »

I’m Giving Away A Free Print On Metallic Paper
A few weeks ago my +RC Concepcion got a shipment of +Red River Paper Polar Pearl Metallic paper. Well, RC was away teaching last week, so I couldn’t help but raid his stash and give it a try on my beloved Epson 3880 I have to admit, I was a little skeptical. See, I’m totally hooked on metal prints from Image Wizards. I love ‘em! But I won’t lie… they ain’t cheap. So I can have a few in my home or office, but it’s not like I can have everything printed that way. Plus, I want to print some stuff for my office and be able to swap it out every so often and not have it cost me hundreds of dollars. So, I guess I wasn’t sure that metallic paper would hold up. But I gotta tell ya, when the first print came off the printer and I walked it around the office there was one word that I heard over and over… “Wow!”. The color just screams and the detail is ... more »

My Go-To “In the Field” Photography Gear Bag
I had a few people ask me yesterday (after my Story Behind the Photo post on my blog: http://mattyk.me/T9bmRn) about which bag I carry when I’m out in the field. That’s easy! I’ve had the same bag for years now and, no matter how many other bags I try, I find myself going back to this one. It’s called the Boda Bag (www.goboda.com). I first found this bag about 5 years ago from my good friend +Jeff Revell. I bought my first one right after that and as soon as they came out with version 2, I bought that one as well.
It was designed by Jim Garner (a wedding photographer), but I find it suits my hiking, outdoor and landscape shooting, as well as it does my portrait shoots. Here's a link to my blog where I wrote a little more about it and how I use it: http://mattyk.me/PCqFRr

Falls Creek Lower Falls and the Story Behind the Photo
Back in August I was in the Portland area and went out shoot along the Columbia River Gorge with some friends +Nicole S. Young, +Brian Matiash, and +Brian Bonham (thanks guys! great time!). Any of you that know the area know that finding waterfalls there is like finding a palm tree to photograph in Florida – they’re EVERYWHERE! So I set out to find some really interesting ones. While doing some research on the web, I found a place called Falls Creek and it looked like it could be a great spot. I really liked the fact that it wasn’t just one waterfall. It had a large lower fall, but it also had a really nice upper area up top too.

Lightroom Fall Color Presets
This week I’m updating my Fall Color presets for +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I was talking to my brother yesterday (who lives in the Northeast US) and he was saying how a lot of the leaves are changing color. Now, when I grew up, my dad was absolutely meticulous about our backyard, so the fall season only reminds me of many days of raking leaves after school – not pretty colors. But as an adult I can appreciate the season more (especially since I live in Florida and don’t have to worry about leaves anymore) ;-)
Anyway, I do like to photograph the northeast and I realized, as I was going through my photos from the area, that I was making some of the same tweaks to many of my “fall color” photos, so I made a preset for it. Here's the link to download: http://mattyk.me/T5wJDb

When A Landscape Photo Shoot Goes Bad
Yesterday I posted some of my favorite photos from a recent trip. I got a lot of great comments on them (thanks so much!). Well, figuring that I can't end on a high note, I thought I'd take it a step further.
Today I thought I'd post some photos from the trip that didn't make the cut. As I think you’ll see, so much of landscape and outdoor photography is just about being there at the right time and place with the right weather. You can be in a really beautiful place and, if the conditions don’t cooperate, take some really bad photos. Heck, as you’ll see here… you can be in a really beautiful place, with really great weather, and still take some bad photos

Has A Photo Ever Not Lived Up To What You First Thought It Was?
Sitting here today with +Brian Matiash and I showed him a photo that I took last week. One that I thought was awesome when I was taking it, but now I'm not that happy with it. When I was setting up the shot I loved the location... when I framed the photo and took some test photos I loved it... when the sun came up and I actually took the photos I loved it. Basically, while I was on location, I loved everything about the photo.
Now that I have it on my computer, I'm not crazy about it. I'm not sure what I don't like (and by the way, this isn't an invite to tell me all the things wrong with it) ;-)
I guess I'm just curious. Does this ever happen to you? You capture a photo and you think it's gonna be great. But when you see it large and start editing it, you're just not t... more »

My Nikon D800 vs. D800E Comparison
Last week I got a Nikon D800E from +LensProToGo for my photo trip out west. I wanted to put it up against a Nikon D800 to see if I'd really notice the extra sharpness you get because the 800E doesn't have the anti-aliasing filter. Now, going into the test I have to say I expected to like the D800E better. It's a little niche, and isn't the norm - so it just seemed like it would be "cool" to have the D800E in my bag.
The whole comparison is over on my blog if you want to read more. But, after shooting with it for a week, I think (for my photography at least), I'll probably go with the D800.

Why +Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Is the Best Version Yet for Photographers
I wrote an article over on my blog today (www.mattk.com) on why I think Photoshop Elements 11 is the best version yet for photographers. So much so that I have a hard time telling people to buy the full version of Photoshop unless they need some more advanced features.
In one of the comments, some one called Lightroom and Elements the "$250 Digital Darkroom". That's exactly it. For $250 you can have Lightroom and Elements and have just about everything you need to professionally edit your photos.
I actually did a fetaure comparison and wrote more about it over on the blog. Here's the link: http://mattyk.me/Smewug

Megan “Girl with the Photoshop Tattoo” Orsi has been using Photoshop for 16 years and made a career out of her passion. She perpetuated her love with a different type of Pen tool: http://adobe.ly/QDP9Fm.
