We love this photo. Soft light, the reflection of the photographer in the woman's eyes....and wow, those eyes! Beautiful light blue, which mends perfectly with the white cloth that surrounds her face.
Original, unique, and beautiful. Very deserving of a week on the SmugMug cover!

Pixlr online image editing: good enough for serious work on Chrome?
In the discussion about the new Chrome Pixel touchbook photographers are often mentioned as one of the target groups. The machine has just 32GB storage in the base $1299 model so it completely relies on Google Drive and online apps.
In yesterday´s discussion +Louis Gray mentioned Pixlr as ´90% of Photoshop´.
What do you think: is Pixlr good enough to replace Photoshop and is a workflow where you manipulate all images online a viable solution?

Recently, I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter's departure had been announced. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said:
"I love you and I wish you enough."
The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom." They kissed and the daughter left.
The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry.
I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?" "Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking but why is this a forever good-bye?"

Best news photo of 2012: crowdsourcing your submissions
Last year I did a series of best news photos per country. This year I´m asking you to enter the best photo(s) capturing the 2012 news. Countless websites have made up their mind and of course we will have the official World Press Photo, but crowdsourcing seems the way to go in 2013 so let me know which photo captured the news in the most compelling way.
Your choice, not a jury, just your personal pick. The only condition is that it needs to be related to 2012 news items. The best illustration of an issue which concerned you and made the (local) news.

Am I the only one that thinks "Social Media Experts" have no clue to what they are talking about? Nearly every article I read completely misses the mark when it comes to social media, the value of engagement or recommend strategies. If you haven't moved past the marketing 101 class you took in the 90s...please stop spreading misinformation!

Bridging the gap of classical art and street photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson combined the two practices and set the world of photography on a new course. We will look at how he and his followers at Magnum, converted the lessons from classical artists into the photojournalism, street photography, and portraiture. We will introduce the visual language, examining its basic grammar and the ways in which photographers can build up each element in their own work. They will be given specific examples from master painters who were proto-street photographers.

This Portrait was Hand Drawn...with 2.1 million dots
This portrait is of a man named Benjamin Kyle who suffers from a case of amnesia. That isn't even his real name. He was found in a restaurant in Georgia with not a single piece of information to his name. An artist, Miguel Endara, saw a documentary on this individual and wanted to help. He ended up creating this ultra realistic dot portrait with 2.1 million dots, taking roughly 138 hours.

"I believe Google+ Communities will grow like weeds throughout Google’s Social Media and Identity Network. Every one of Google’s tools either have been, or in the process of being integrated with Google+ for an unmatchable combination of service. After only two days of having Communities available, thousands of them have already been created.
Because Facebook has no public search engine, all content is confined within its forums. Facebook will not be able anytime soon to emulate what Google has done with SEO, Authorship or even Hangouts. The video performance of Hangouts cannot be duplicated without an associated fiber-network between datacenters like those Google has built.
I predict that the steady stream of Businesses building a Brand Presence on Google+ will soon, with the addition of Google+ Communities, become a flood.... more »
