How the Earth’s temperature has varied over the past millennium or two has long been a key question in climate research and massive amounts of work have gone into individual temperature reconstructions. The PAGES 2k Consortium brought together and reanalysed over 400 records of past temperature variability, broken down to the scale of continents, and published the results in Nature Geoscience on 21 April.
Download the paper (http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/ngeo1797 ; free for registered users until 10 May) and join us as we discuss our understanding of climate evolution over the past two millennia with PAGES 2k author Nick McKay, PAGES executive director Thorsten Kiefer, climate modeller Gavin Schmidt, and palaeoclimatologist Nerilie Abram on 9 May, at 4PM BST/ 11 AM EDT.

A great example of how Twitter can be used to communicate and aggregate information.

I know I have been fairly quiet the past few weeks. I know, based on stats, that you've noticed my silence. My silence has been driven by funding fears and sequestration.
EDIT My blog is coming to a halt under your traffic. In response, I'm copying the entirety of my blog post below.
I have spent the past several weeks trying to figure out how to write this post. Sometimes emotions are so raw that they don’t readily shape themselves into words: They manifest themselves as a face that can’t smile, a head that throbs with a stress migraine, and with an exhaustion driven not by lack of sleep but rather deriving from the emotional exhaustion that just makes a person want to hide in a dark room locked away from the world. My head hurts. I am exhausted. My emotions are raw. I am writing now because there is a very real possibility that the proposed restructuring of the US edu... more »

It’s SpotOn NYC’s 2nd birthday and to celebrate we’d like to try something a bit different…
We invite you to help us to create a set of case studies on using social media for science outreach projects. Have you used blogs, Twitter, Facebook or maybe Pinterest, podcasts or video to communicate about science? Join us on Thursday 25th April to tell your story in 5 – 10 minutes! We’ll livestream all of the examples and add the video archives to the website, along with all of the written case studies that we’ll be hosting around the event. More details on what we’re hoping to achieve with the case studies on the SpotOn Site: http://www.nature.com/spoton/2013/03/share-your-experiences-to-create-some-spoton-social-media-tips-for-scientists/
