Parents With No Formal Training  Made A Medical Breakthrough

I love this story:

Loving parents triumph over adversity, and may have made a discovery that will save their children's lives.

I love these kinds of stories; always.

There are many cases similar to this one, and I think they're not only heartwarming, but they remind us to heed an important lesson, one we all too often ignore.

I know that physicians get frustrated when patients print out reams of material from the internet and bring them in to appointments.

And they have every right to: no professional enjoys being second guessed, and few have time to answer so many questions.

Few patients and clients have the education or the smarts necessary to make proper use of their instincts or desires or explorations, either.

I certainly balked when a customer tried to tell me how to prepare #1 Ahi Tuna: NO, I was not going to serve it 'well done."

And I didn't have time to debate the issue, during service.

So, yeah, I get it.

And doctors are pressed for time. This is mostly due to a broken system, but sure, it's frustrating to have to repeat the same explanations day in and day out, particularly when one knows that they're just indulging someone, and the results will always be the same.

BUT?

Occasionally, humans are intelligent, and they have insights, and they deserve to be listened to.

Even patients, and even restaurant patrons.

I think these stories not only celebrate love and perseverance and speak to the possibilities within us all, but they help us keep our arrogance in check, too.

Good Going, Parents!

Proud of ya', and thank you for not giving up.

Drug may prevent plaque formation and help treat or reverse atherosclerosis, a major cause of heart disease, and the breakthrough was developed by non-medically trained parents who read everything they could, in an effort to save their children

Two parents’ quest to save their twin daughters’ lives from a rare, degenerative genetic disorder may end up saving and improving the lives of millions.

After digging through medical literature and fitting pieces of data together, the non-medically trained couple contacted German researchers and suggested that a chemical called cyclodextrin may be able to treat atherosclerosis—the hardening of arteries with cholesterol-rich plaques, which is a precursor to heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.

The researchers, Eicke Latz at the University of Bonn and colleagues, followed up on the parents’ hypothesis and found that in mice, cyclodextrin indeed blocked plaque formation, melted away plaques that had already formed in arteries, reduced atherosclerosis-associated inflammation, and revved up cholesterol metabolism—even in rodents fed cholesterol-rich diets.

In petri dish-based tests, the researchers found that the drug seemed to have the same effects on human cells and plaques.

The findings, published Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine, suggest that cyclodextrin—a drug already approved for use in humans by the US Food and Drug Administration—may be highly effective at treating and preventing heart disease.

Currently, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and around 43 percent of Americans have high cholesterol, which can lead to atherosclerosis.

Typical treatments include statins and other cholesterol-lowering drugs, which are not always effective, particularly when patients don’t adhere to doctor-prescribed, low-cholesterol diets.

While Latz and co-authors stress that clinical trials are needed to validate the effects of cyclodextrin, the researchers note that it would be fairly easy to repurpose the drug to treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

See the paper:

Cyclodextrin promotes atherosclerosis regression via macrophage reprogramming

Dissolving away cholesterol:

Cardiovascular disease resulting from atherosclerosis is one of the most common causes of death worldwide, and additional therapies for this disease are greatly needed because not all patients can be effectively treated with existing approaches. Cyclodextrin is a common FDA-approved substance that is already used as a solubilizing agent to improve delivery of various drugs. Now, Zimmer et al. have discovered that cyclodextrin can also solubilize cholesterol, removing it from plaques, dissolving cholesterol crystals, and successfully treating atherosclerosis in a mouse model. Because cyclodextrin is already known to be safe in humans, this drug is now a potential candidate for testing in human patients for the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Abstract:

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease linked to elevated blood cholesterol concentrations. Despite ongoing advances in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Continuous retention of apolipoprotein B–containing lipoproteins in the subendothelial space causes a local overabundance of free cholesterol. Because cholesterol accumulation and deposition of cholesterol crystals (CCs) trigger a complex inflammatory response, we tested the efficacy of the cyclic oligosaccharide 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD), a compound that increases cholesterol solubility in preventing and reversing atherosclerosis. We showed that CD treatment of murine atherosclerosis reduced atherosclerotic plaque size and CC load and promoted plaque regression even with a continued cholesterol-rich diet. Mechanistically, CD increased oxysterol production in both macrophages and human atherosclerotic plaques and promoted liver X receptor (LXR)–mediated transcriptional reprogramming to improve cholesterol efflux and exert anti-inflammatory effects. In vivo, this CD-mediated LXR agonism was required for the antiatherosclerotic and anti-inflammatory effects of CD as well as for augmented reverse cholesterol transport. Because CD treatment in humans is safe and CD beneficially affects key mechanisms of atherogenesis, it may therefore be used clinically to prevent or treat human atherosclerosis.

Yes, if possible , I will vote for Bernie for President. If I cannot, I will vote such that I support the movement toward what he is advocating.
And then each of us who believes in what he advocates has to keep making noise. Keep speaking, standing, demanding what we really want. And not give up.

"For the first twenty to thirty minutes I sat there with high expectations of hilarity. After half an hour, my feelings turned extremely grim. I was scared and upset. Let me explain...

Trump basically said the same few things the whole time. He knows exactly what will get a cheer from the crowd and he says it...

out of everything I saw, the crowd was the worst part. I have never seen more hateful people in my life. Everyone was just filled with so much hatred. If a protester had a sign, even the peaceful ones, they would take the sign from them, rip it up, and throw it back at the protesters...

A lady, sitting not 5 feet from me, said, "Well hopefully when you're president, you'll get rid of em all!" Get rid of them? Get rid of anyone who opposes Trump? It was sickening. I felt truly nauseous. And these people loved the protesters. They loved the drama and the chaos. And Trump fed upon it."

If you are up to facing the subject of death and dying- take some time. The podcast is about an hour long.

Anything that helps people to purchase what they need, at a (more) affordable price.

we mislaid a med my son needs daily on our recent vacation.  He ran out yesterday and got the Dr to call it in.  We only needed 4 days worth before the new prescription would fill.

Looking for prices so we had cash handy I stumbled on this site.  With the coupon provided we paid $53 instead of $103 for the generic. All I did was print the coupon for Walgreen.

Best guess, a discount system to make Big Pharma's need for image adjustment.___Anything that helps people to purchase what they need, at a (more) affordable price.

Step1) read the article. Yes, longer. Worth it!
Step2) think. feel.

I too am scared by the hatred, the aggression, the ugliness and the fears that have been stirred by this election and rhetoric. Scared on the personal and on the macro level. For my friends who don't fir the "boxes"- some for myself, tho white, I am female, thus also a "target". And for the country I was born in that is nigh unto unrecognizable anymore. And then for the world, as the US does swing a mighty hammer. Which could smash so much.

I have seen several social media posts over the last few months that scare me. One even caused a rift in my own family that has left us forever divided. But I am haunted by two posts in particular.

One was made to look like a page from a book. It said, “If your religion requires you to hate somebody, then you need a new religion.” That’s really what it boils down. If you hate someone solely because a misinterpreted, outdated, and repeatedly re-translated book tells you to, then you need a new book.

The other post was a tweet by a Libyan woman who wrote, “If you’re an American confusedly watching the darkest forces of [your] nation rally around a demagogue, maybe [you] can understand the Mideast now.” I won’t be one of those who rally around a fool who promotes hatred and bigotry and isolationism. And I certainly won’t sit idly by and watch those things boil over in my country.

When I was a kid growing up in Tulsa, I remember the KKK marching in holiday parades in our area. I remember racially-fueled fights in my high school. I remember people, even my own parents, calling north Tulsa “n*gg*r town.” I remember feeling a fear that the elders of my family instilled in me anytime we drove through that area to see family in the next town over. I remember being madly in love with a beautiful young black woman named Kim, and I remember her smiling back at me. Worst of all, I remember never even having the nerve to ask her to go with me, because we both knew our parents wouldn’t have allowed it.

What is happening in the United States during this election cycle scares me. I am scared for my black friends. I worry about a black friend because he is married to a white woman. To make it worse, he works in an area of California where white men missing half of their teeth still wear denim vests with the confederate flag on them. I am scared for the son of other friends who is a teenage black man, and for that reason alone, will be targeted by the police when he gets his driver’s license next year. And I’m scared for the daughter of another friend who is an incredible young black girl who recently spent weeks raising over five-hundred dollars for the American Heart Association. I am scared for a Muslim friend’s family who recently went to Canada to visit a sick relative, and was subjected to unreasonable search and humiliation when they returned to the country they are citizens of. I am scared for the women in my family who could lose the right to make decisions regarding their own bodies. I am scared for my friends and acquaintances in the LGBT community, because their right to have a family is in jeopardy. I am scared for the young men around me, because they may be asked to fight in wars that will further alienate our nation from the rest of the world, and make us the target of other people filled with as much hatred as those who are raising their hands to pledge allegiance to a man. Not to our country. To a hate-filled man.

I am a middle-aged white man. I am probably the only demographic in America that is safe. But my safety is hollow if the people I care about and love are not as safe in our country as I am. I am not a warrior, and I am not a protester. But I do have a weapon. The written word is both my sword and shield, and if I do not use them to stand up to those who would harm my country, then I am not deserving of the safety I enjoy while those around me live nervously and in fear as we watch what is happening to the land of the free.

I don’t know all the answers and I won’t pretend to dabble in international politics. I will say that I know, with unequivocal certainty, that spouting hatred and taking rights away from people who have never raised their hand to our country, except to pledge allegiance to its flag, isn’t the way to protect our nation or our ways of life.

I do not know how I am going to use the written word over the next eight months, but I must use it. If only to be able to look at myself in the mirror. If you are one of those spout racism and are lining up to turn back the American clock on basic human rights, you are my enemy. For every word of hatred you spout, I will render two of tolerance. I do want to be able to look myself in the mirror, but more importantly, I want the people I love to know that I did everything I could to ensure their safety.___Step1) read the article. Yes, longer. Worth it!
Step2) think. feel.
Step3) Share his words, words have power.
Step4) Follow this man.

From the article:
“The rise of Donald Trump as a presidential candidate stopped being funny a few months ago. It’s serious. This man, who is too thin-skinned to hear an insult, will have control of our nuclear arsenal. He will have a presidential podium to hawk his steak, wine, and other infomercialesque products. The lives of every American serviceman and woman will be in his tiny hands. Put simply, we have a duty stop bullies from attaining political power and Trump is nothing but a scared bully. When he started claiming his First Amendment rights were being violated by protesters fed up with his vitriol and dishonesty, I couldn’t let it go.”

(About the Patriot Act & NDAA)
"We're talking about American citizens who can be taken from the United States and sent to a camp at Guantánamo Bay and held indefinitely. It puts every single citizen American at risk," he said. "Really, what security does this indefinite detention of Americans give us? The first and flawed premise, both here and in the badly named Patriot Act, is that our pre-9/11 police powers were insufficient to stop terrorism. This is simply not borne out by the facts."
(Rand) Paul was backed by Senator Dianne Feinstein.
"Congress is essentially authorising the indefinite imprisonment of American citizens, without charge," she said. "We are not a nation that locks up its citizens without charge."

Absolutely hysterical. <snort, snicker>

and ... I immediately think about another politician that was thought to be a joke.... and who went on to order atrocities, much along the line that this buffoon is promising to do and led to the death of a horrendous number of people. Need I mention the name?

<edit> I thought it was satire... but evidently not. There are a fair number of sites that confirm...

You don't have be living abroad, in the sense that your home, family and job is outside of the States- you may be studying. And you may want to vote. (Democrat) Deadline for primary is TODAY midnight.
You can.
