Google Knowledge Graph Meme Confusion

The meme:

"Things not Strings" is utterly inaccurate and a confusion vector.

A more accurate meme goes like this:
"Links not Strings for Referring to Things"

or even:

"Resolvable URIs not Strings for Referring to Things"

Why?

Because a semantically enhanced Web of (Linked) Data is all about using de-referencable URIs (e.g. HTTP URIs) to denote (refer to) things.  This kind of denotation leverages references as data value types thereby enabling an identifier resolve to its meaning i.e., a representation of the description of what it denotes.

Funnily enough, this is how the Web has always worked. The only thing that's new is the increase in semantic fidelity of the HTTP URI based relations that underly the Web :-)

Permanent Identifiers for the Web, Project Launches

http://manu.sporny.org/2013/perma-id/

Web applications that deal with data on the web often need to specify and use URLs that are very stable. They utilize services such as purl.org to ensure that applications using their URLs will always be re-directed to a working website. These “permanent URL” redirection services operate kind of like a switchboard, connecting requests for information with the true location of the information on the Web. These switchboards can be reconfigured to point to a new location if the old location stops working.

How Does it Work?

If the concept sounds a bit vague... read more here:

New LOD Cloud Cache

We've just completed a reload of the LOD cloud cache [1][2][3][4] using Virtuoso 7.0 [2].

The reload of this instance was driven by the need to deliver a LOD Cloud cache with better data quality, as opposed to one driven by the goal of demonstrating big data analytics over massive data volumes.

Following the reload, as per usual, we have a technical report [5] demonstrating the implications of the Virtuoso 7.0's architecture.

BTW -- we need this instance to top 50 Billion triples so please provide URLs to any significant datasets that can help get us to this goal :-)

Identity is about You not Them!

Excerpts from a post by +Doc Searls that explains the ongoing problem with Identity, Authentication, and Namespaces. Basically, yet another example of why we need to leverage the in-built architecture of the Web with regards to Web-scale verifiable Identity.

"I believe, as do more many others, that the only solution is for those with the damn names to be in charge of those names, and to identify themselves in their own ways to the many different systems that require putting those names in their namespaces."

You should be the overseer, manager, and controller of your Identity.

I've been admiring this man ever since I first heard his talk on how school kills creativity. It's what transformed my latent discontent into a hunger for alternatives. And it's what makes me a little less afraid of doing things the-other-way.

“There’s a world that exists wether or not you exist. The world of other people, events, other circumstances... But there’s another world that exists only because you exist, that came into being when you did. A world of your private passions, your motivations, your aspirations, your hopes and your talents.” - Sir Ken Robinson

My kind of saying...;-)

But then there is the debate on...what is the "right way"?  Or maybe I like to go to the right because I am a right-hander?  Or maybe the one on  the "left" is going the wrong way? How does he know?

Decisions, decisions...lol.

But the moral of the story is: don't buy into the Herd Syndrome.  Be your own individual, with your own choices, decisions, likes and dislikes and own up to it. :-)

Latest Berlin SPARQL Benchmark Report

Here's the gist of the recent LOD mailing list post by +Chris Bizer  about the latest edition of the Berlin SPARQL Benchmark for SPARQL compliant RDF databases and stores.

Benchmark Description

Berlin SPARQL Benchmark (BSBM) is a benchmark for measuring the performance of storage systems that expose SPARQL endpoints. The benchmark is built around an e-commerce use case in which a set of products is offered by different vendors. The benchmark defines two query mixes:

1. Search and navigation which simulates a consumer looking for a product via a Web portal [1].

2. Business Intelligence use case which simulates different stakeholders peforming analytical queries against the dataset. The query mix relies heavily on SPARQL 1.1 constructs like GROUP BY and COUNT() and is designed to touch large portions oft... more »

Virtuoso 7.0 is game-changing hybrid RDF & SQL Column-Store DBMS for handling Big Data challenges associated with:

1. cost-effectiveness -- as result of new column-store data compaction technology

2. performance -- array (vectorized) execution of queries across multiple threads per CPU core

3. scalability -- scale from multiple instances of Virtuoso per machine to multiple instances per collection of machines in a shared-nothing cluster

4. security -- use fine-grained access control lists (ACLs) and data access policies that are driven by entity relationship semantics to  control data access

5. heterogeneous data integration -- merge data across a wide variety of data sources extending from existing SQL RDBMS systems to file servers and Web services.

+Tim Berners-Lee is a very modest chap, so it's really all too easy for others to assume the WWW and its architecture are some kind of accident. For instance, there's a really old misconception that the Semantic Web is a Web afterthought whereas in reality they are one and the same, envisioned at the very same time.

RDF is just a vehicle that emerged later on to address the Data and Logic fidelity issues required by the original Semantic Web vision.

For those siloists out there, I urge you to go straight to: http://bit.ly/124u4en (the Web was never about imposing anything on anyone!).
