Over the last couple of years, the National Weather Service has been upgrading their radars to become "dual-polarization" radars. This new technology scans the sky in two dimensions and was designed to be helpful with rainfall estimates (since it can see the size of raindrops). Despite this great technology, NWS Wilmington's dual-pol radar is overdoing rainfall totals in our area...reemphasizing the importance of ground truth reports (from people like you)!

I need some podcasting projects for this year so my AT2020 isn't just a photography subject.
The few times I've had to kick it into action, though, it's been a fantastic mic. I shot a video with my DSLR a few months ago and edited in audio from this using FCP and it sounds really incredible for $100 and change.

Just got a DMCA notice for a piece of comment spam (from someone trying to clear up their Google results, presumably, from who they likely hired to spam me).
I'll probably remove the comments in question but I sure would like a way to hit this guy back for abusing the DMCA (especially since he likely hired a link builder to do this). Thoughts?

These code snippets will ensure someone will be sent to your site even if they click on a link where feedreader . com (or any iframe stealing site) is listed rather than your own.

The testing phase of the dual-pol upgrade appears to be underway at the Charleston, SC (KCLX) radar site. Seeing the radar running in VCP 32 tonight with Level II data flowing out. Cool to see DP data here! Hopefully not much longer before we're up and running for real.

Social Weather Tech
Social weather tech - what is that? It's a combo of the things I love that go hand in hand with weather; that is, weather - social media - and technology.
Three separate entities that I enjoy individually but put them together and my craving grows stronger.
I love weather, I'm a meteorologist. That said, I have other interests. I started both the Facebook and Twitter accounts for The Weather Channel in early 2009 (when TWC was not the least bit interested in this thing called social media).
So of course I am also terribly interested in social media and how weather this (not so) new platform intermingle with each other - from data mining to first hand realtime weather reports to weather data dissemination.

New alerts for extreme weather events (tornadoes, flash floods, blizzards, hurricanes, etc.) are being rolled out on a nationwide basis in June.
I'd be more enthusiastic about these if they could get them to work within the warning polygon (for certain events like tornado and flash flood warnings) rather than sending alerts to the entire county. This system was created in part to mitigate the effects of "siren mentality" but without a laser focus on that polygon, siren mentality is exactly what we're going to get -- and by the time they revise it, it may be too late.

Home connection sputtered out so I'm playing with the revamped Google+ iOS app. Um, WOW. Very visually inclined -- brings out everyone's amazing photography to the forefront.
With On Air reaching everybody now, I'm thinking G+ is going to have increased utility going forward. I just really need to see about getting it in Hootsuite -- write API cannot be released fast enough. Twitter hooked me because of the great clients around it. G+ needs that hook.

A few evenings ago, I helped +Jon Mitchell test Dark Sky, a predictive radar app for the iPhone/iPad. The app UI is great, and it does pretty well for stratiform precip, but don't rely on it in severe weather situations...

I'm really shocked there's not a simple, off-the-shelf iPad telestrator app that can make a VNC connection to a machine and let you illustrate over it. There are apps part of a full-studio telestrator setup, but I don't need/can't afford that.
