Great article. The question of how to prepare my kids for the world and the cost and demotivational practices of our current education system are certainly on my mind. I am hoping that very soon our innovators will have invented our way out of our expensive system into a new system that is transformative for the US. With free classes by top universities being put online are we close to a system that rewards your innovation portfolio rather than your degree papers. Maybe we are already there.

Google+ Usage Soaring
Here's a more in-depth look at the latest GlobalWebIndex research on social network usage. Google+ is rocking it:
http://globalwebindex.net/thinking/google-in-depth/
Looking at the chart below, if we look at the top ten activities that users have done via their PC (we also track mobile and tablet – but that’s for another day) we can see that, broadly speaking, (and as expected) Facebook users are more active and doing more with their profile. The number one activity on all services is to share photos, with 80% of Facebook users doing so. For Facebook, this is followed by “commenting on a friends post”, “messaging friends on a one to one basis” and then “posted a comment about my daily activities”. If we look at posting comments in more detail, we can see that 62% of Facebook users have “posted a comment about my daily activities”, follo... more »

I am trying to not drink alcohol in the month of January but last night I had a drink. I found out my over 60 gay neighbors who have been together for 30 years got married. My 8 your old daughter cheered with joy when she heard the news. They had not seen this Macklemore video and it left them both crying in joy. So 2 thumbs up for Washington, we approved gay marriage and Macklemore is a product of our great state. Congrats Chris & Tim. Same Love!

Great advice on how to present to senior executives. Best advice: Act like the executive just told you have 5 minutes to present not 50.

With Growth Of ‘Hacker Scouting,’ More Kids Learn To Tinker +NPR
http://www.npr.org/2012/12/23/167285991/with-growth-of-hacker-scouting-more-kids-learn-to-tinker?sc=tw&cc=share
Countless kids have grown up with the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts or Campfire Girls, but for some families, the uniforms and outdoor focus of traditional Scouting groups don’t appeal.
In recent months, Scoutlike groups that concentrate on technology and do-it-yourself projects have been sprouting up around the country. They’re coed and, like traditional Scouting organizations, award patches to kids who master skills.
…
The Hacker Scouts don’t wear uniforms, but soon they’ll be able to earn something akin to merit badges, made by the kid-friendly DIY electronics company Adafruit Industries.
Badges range from “learn to solder,” “aerial quadcopter” and “high-altitude ba... more »

I wanted to share a really amazing example of how +Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is using Salesforce and open APIs to help veterans transition back into civilian life.
In IAVA's Salesforce, they are tracking legislators and legislation to help them better advocate for veterans, and instead of hand entering this fast-changing legislative information, they are able to integrate directly with Sunlight Labs Congress API (http://services.sunlightlabs.com/docs/Sunlight_Congress_API/). This integration makes them more efficient and more effective, with current legislative data that they care to track right at their fingertips and in the context of their other important CRM data.
What's impressive to me about their Salesforce implementation is that they started from a strong grounding in their business needs, took advantage of open APIs to augment their data, and th... more »

Rethinking Consumption
The overarching goal of the study is to bring the consumer voice into
the sustainability conversation and help articulate specific decisions
and actions that companies can take to accelerate and grow a more
sustainable economy.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
• Uncover consumer motivations that drive their interest in living
sustainable lives – and provide opportunities for companies to
create products and services with beneficial economic, social and
environmental impact;
• Provide insights and implications that help companies make the
business case for sustainability and advance the creation and
deployment of more sustainable products, policies and practices; and
• Better understand how companies can engage consumers in creating a
sustainable economy and future.

This is a great article about great book "Why Nations Fail". It makes me think about why organizations fail. I would say for simliar reasons. Organizations who are not inclusive and open with their brand and technology, able to effectively partner and create opportunities for advancement across their organization become slowly insulated from the type of feedback and partnership they need to be successful. This is a lesson for all leaders and all citizens. All organizations have self interests but smart organizations develop very wide self interests. For example, why is Starbucks launching "Create Jobs for America?" Because they realize that if we do not have real job creation, their business is going to loose profits. Even better if they realize that their brand should be at the center of innovation, entrepreneurs and job creation.

When +Marc Benioff talks about the Social Enterprise, he's talking about having conversations with your constituents where they "live" online, executing a strategy for deepening your engagement with them, and maintaining social CRM systems which allow you to track your touches with your audience out in the world.
With help from Groundwire and the Salesforce.com Foundation, Dogwood Initiative is putting on a clinic for how to reach people where they "live" online but instead of talking to them about products, they're talking to them about actions they can take to improve their world and the health of the environment in British Columbia.
Check out this Engagement Deep Dive from Dogwood Initiative where they walk through how they are using Salesforce.com to drive their mission.

If we search deep we find we are all on a mission. Our organizations should help us with this expression. Great TED talk to make the case. Makes me feel lucky to work at an organization with such a strong mission.

Perhaps what we all need is more of our friends to give us advice in the tradition of the Quakers. I love this practice. Big thanks to Kat from Milkshake Media who shared this with me. The hardest thing to do when someone needs advice is to help them find their own truth. This is how you do it.

Are you innovative? How can you create more innovation? Working at the intersection of technology and social change every day it is important to understand how you can move some important dials. I asked Steve to give this talk and I was surprised about how much I didn't know about the subject. This should be a TED talk! Check it out!

Here is the thing! I live in one of the most amazing cities and counties where lately I am trying to keep up with who is working harder on sustainability issues. King Country is kicking it with Green Tools Project and the City of Seattle with Resource Venture project. I have always appreciated the way my local government is pushing the envelope on waste reduction, green building etc, but so wonderful to see it from the inside. A bunch of super devoted people and amazing organizations like Cascadia Consulting Group and O'Brien and Company managing very collaborative contracts. Amazing!

Love Air Bnb, Nice article by Sightline about the fact that they are starting to effect the hotel industry with this business model and as such they should expect legislation that will complicate their model.
If you are disruptive be prepared for those you are disrupting to fight back. And the hotel industry - I am guessing they have some power.
