Shit People Say...
I sell my work at a local Arts Market here in Queenstown, and it is amazing the comments people make about photography work, that they dont make about anything else..
'You must have an amazing and very expensive camera!!'..
'You must have a very expensive lenses'..
'You must have one of those commercial cameras..'
'Is your camera a regular one?..'
'You must be amazing at photoshop!!'
Do people ask a painter if he has an expensive brush?.. or comment to a chef that he must have amazing knives, and an expensive oven because of the great food he makes?
People trivialise photographers and their work to the point of trying to justify their poor photos, or to try and understand something that is different to what they can do with their camera.. people dont understand the craft in ... more »

Solitude by the lake in the evening light is always sooo good for the soul.. Water is so mesmerising, and peaceful if you take the time to sit and watch it for a while.. :)

'Show Brightness to Everyone...'
In a small way I guess this is what we do as photographers.. capture brightness and darkness, contrast, and composition and show it to everyone..

Mid NZ Summer gone wrong...
Whilst it is technically the middle of summer, it is anything but summery outside.. It seems that mother nature has the goal of fulling up our lake to the brim, and then some more.. We get glimpses of sky, only for it to cloud over and pour again.. So its a good day to be editing photos and watching clouds fly by from my 'office window'..
From earlier in the year..

NZ Photographers more popular than our Prime Minister on Google+...
Pretty funny to see that myself and a few other close photographer friends here in Queenstown/Central Otago are more popular than our Prime Minister.. Perhaps +Todd Sisson or +Stefan Haworth should run for Prime Minister next term?.. :P

Golden Light over Lake Wakatipu..
This shot was taken almost a year ago.. Havent had much interesting light here in Queenstown this New Years period.. but with a fresh dusting of snow on the mountain tops, Summer is a bit confused at the moment..
How is the winter treating everyone in the Northern Hemisphere?.. I assume Queenstown hasnt stolen all the snow from you guys?.. :P

Whilst they Slept..
Recently went to Moeraki with a group of NZ Photographers, and +Trey Ratcliff .. Whilst the majority of them went to bed (including Trey), three of us went out to shoot the boulders under the moon light at 2am in the morning..
Who needs sleep anyways.. Ended up with 2.5hrs sleep, waking up at 5am to shoot the sunrise.. :P but it was all worth it..

Early Morning Light in the Rees Valley...
Getting out of bed early and getting out to a location is key in getting good shots.. I enjoy mornings the most.. the air is moist, the foliage is glistening.. and the general spirit of shooting in mornings is fresher for me.. Once the shoot is over, you then have the whole day left to be productive.. This was one of the first shots I took in the Rees Valley.. the 2hr hike into Lennox Falls followed, and the day didnt disappoint..

Let the Summertime Adventures Begin...
The Journey into the Rees Valley is something special.. and yesterday morning we were greeted with low cloud, and slowly clearing skies.. We walked into the Lennox Falls, which is just between the ridge lines that are visible breaking through the clouds.. I think an overnight camping mission is on the cards for this peaceful location this summer time..

Saturday Night Creations...
Currently working on a collection of Triptychs for my online store, something different that will hopefully inspire people to create custom triptychs for their own walls..
I enjoy seeing people at the Arts market here in Queenstown, NZ, slowly catch on to the idea of linking images thru colours and image themes for their walls.. and when they come up with their own combinations it is nice to see them happy with their creation..
So I thought I would share one of mine.. just another sneak peak of things to come at www.jlphoto.co.nz

Early Morning Hues...
Sometimes I have to double take the back of my camera when out shooting in very low light conditions.. Having the ability to 'over expose' and reveal a scene not visible to the human eye can be very exciting.. This wintery morning at Lake Hayes, Central Otago, New Zealand is a perfect example of this.. Who said that being a photographer you have to simply capture what you see.. Understanding your camera and how it soaks up light can be a very creative and empowering discovery..

Been Missing in Action..
Sometimes in life, you have to prioritise what is important to you.. I havent been on G+ much of late, been questioning its role in my life/business.. lots of other things recently have taken priority over social media... New website at www.jlphoto.co.nz is coming along nicely.. Lots more work to do before it is released.. But looking forward to sharing my new work with the G+ masses again in the near future.. :)

This years results from my entries into the NZIPP IRIS Print Awards.. Definitely a very valuable process, and I learnt alot in the preparation of prints to be judged by others.. Id recommend to anyone in investing the time and effort to enter a few prints into an awards process.. The value is in the process not in the result.. :)

Panning with a moving subject whilst using a long lense makes for interesting challenges and creative opportunities.. This wont be everyones taste.. but I quite like it.. :) moments like these are around us constantly every day.. trying to create something interesting with them is rewarding..

Sunsets like these certainly get the adrenaline flowing.. Working with my new D800e and a Really Right Stuff ballhead made for a few challenges but managed to capture this sunset as I had hoped..

Your not in China??..
As much as this scene might look like Im in the mountains of the Himalayas, or in China somewhere, this is actually taken right here in Queenstown, NZ.. The little building is an old film set from the 1980's, and hasnt been demolished.. Perfect for a unique image in a recent snow fall..

Winter hasnt finished just yet!!..
Winter has been a bit dissapointing here in Queenstown, NZ.. What started out as a cold snowy season, quickly turned into an unseasonally warm winter with not much snow.. But fortunately for the ski fields around here we have had a great September, with alot of snow falling to low levels.. I was out shooting on a powder ski day.. Photography always takes priority.. I can only imaging the epic lines being had up at Queenstowns closest ski resort Coronet Peak, seen here reflecting in the near by Lake Hayes.
Long may winter last.. but perhaps its time for Spring?..

Just off the Beaten Path..
The walk to the towering Mcleans Falls in the Catlins is only a short one, but is packed with beautiful forest and a stunning river.. The Mcleans Falls consist of several tiers, with about four distinct sections to it.. The upper section is very large, with a tall vertical face and a lower cascading water flow..
This is the lower Mcleans Falls, frequently walked straight past and ignored by passerbys whilst I was there on their rush to get to the larger upper falls, this was easily the most magical part of the falls.. It always surprises me how people rarely venture off the beaten path.. mearly a 5m walk off the track and this scene appears.. from the path you can barely see anything..

Is a fine line between 'Art' and Incompetence?..
Photography is an interesting art form.. With a science background, technical and structured.. typically a portraiture/studio photographer controls his/her surroundings, lighting etc for consistency and 'perfection'.. but is it in that quest that the art is lost?.. does it just become another well exposed, well composed shot?.. perhaps the only way to 'stand out' is to be 'incompetent' in the traditional means.. and to create a new standard.. whether lower or higher.. different gets attention!!.. different creates discussion..
Do i like these images??.. personally hmmm not really.. but thats the beauty of 'art' its in the eye of the beholder.. whats the value of art?.. it is an enigma that polarises all of us.. Photographers seek to improve and become better, but by whose definition?.. our ... more »

Cold Freezing Winters Morning = My Happy Place!!...
Ice Queen.. As I was driving towards the Roaring Meg this morning thru the Gibbston Valley, a tree in the distance caught my eye, standing proudly over the head of the valley.. Situated in a plain frosted over field, surrounded by big mountains and the Nevis Bluff, with the early morning light on the mountains but the entire scene in shade.. I knew Id have to turn around and change my plans for the morning.. 2hrs later in temperatures just below freezing.. the sun flooded the valley and the scene simply melted away..
