"Silo Road"
www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2013/01/30/silo-road/

Is it January 30th? Oh that’s right, Happy Birthday to me! :)) This is an image from a recent job I completed for Home Trimwork This magnificent home is located in Central New Jersey and is quite an architectural masterpiece. It was truly an honor to photograph this location in the evening hours and the home owners were very accommodating toward my visit. I hope to share a few more images from this project with you very soon!

Have you ever heard of or used the Guardian Maximus Mini Raid1? It's been a week since mine arrived and its great to have a redundant real time backup while working in Photoshop and Lightroom, even on the go! It's Bus Powered also! $250

“I’m a greater believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it”
- Thomas Jefferson

I can't call myself lucky person but I always give my best at work! Yet nothing good came out of it (can't even get my euro back from the lottery) but I always hope for the best.

If you haven't heard yet, I was working hard on the design of HDR One - Online Photography Magazine in the last one month and I'm proud it started so well. Everybody loved it and as +Jimmy McIntyre said we reached the last month issue downloads in just 36hours.

This whole thing wouldn't be possible without the help of +Jim Nix, +Joseph T. Meirose IV, +Conor MacNeill, +Elia Locardi, +Scott Frederick and all the rest who helped out for this issue.

Thank you all!

Here’s a #macro shot I did mid 2012 in a shared studio setting. I used a one light setup and a pyrex dish with DVD covers underneath to give color to the oil and water mixture on top!

A Memory...
http://bit.ly/Te2XJG

Your viewing an image I completed about 1 year ago. I captured it the morning of September 7, 2011 in Cape May, NJ. This is the sunken Concrete Ship and the blurry silhouette is of an old man that used to play on this ship as a little boy. This was when it was more intact offshore. While capturing this image, he decided to walk into my frame and chat with me about his memories. I showed this image to my wife last night and she was surprised I’ve not published it. Why I’ve been holding back this long, I have no idea. Maybe because it’s not perfect in my opinion, something a lot of us creative beings can get caught up in. If I take away all the technical and perfectionist thoughts I have about this image, I’m left with a memory!

Here’s a shot of the Revel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  I took this while on Summer vacation in September in Ocean City.  I always wanted to shoot this building and took advantage of the blue hour and 5 brackets from 2 seconds to 30 seconds.  I wonder how the Revel will stand up to Hurricane Sandy?  If things stay on track, it will receive a direct hit.  If you find yourself in the path of Sandy, please be safe!

*Be sure to check out +Blake Stough's new post on his blog, PreservingYork.com about our project! http://bit.ly/WfRDi1*

I have to say, it’s a real pain in the ass to lug around two cameras and two tripods! The D7000 is my main setup on the very sturdy Induro carbon fiber tripod. Which after 3 cheap tripods being ruined in the salt water, it was time to make the investment! I’m utilizing the +Promote Control as some of you may know. It’s a great device and a real treat to work with. Honestly, it allows me to do this! While my D7000 is firing off a 4-5 minute bracket sequence I have my old D5000 with a nice piece of glass shooting in monochrome on an old tripod! This allows me to grab more shots and with a different lens! Plus, I can now keep the ISO lower and get a sharper shotthan if... more »

PhotoBlog Entry: "Drink & Fold"
www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/10/12/drink-fold/

Wouldn’t it be great if every load of laundry included a beer? I may never get the folding completed! But that’s ok, because my wife would argue that I never actually move my clothes from the side of the bed. Never mind the washing machine! Hey, I try to help around the house!

Back to the Old York County Prison where you guessed it! This is where the laundry was done. I’m uncertain how often inmates would clean their jail suits but my guess is not often! Maybe this was a laundry area specifically for the guards, to drink! My goal was to bring focus to the beer can and let the rest of the scene go slightly out of focus. I achieved this with an aperture of f/4, but that still wasn’t enough. I began to manipulate the scene slightly using a vignette. But even still the focuswasn’t e... more »

Wow.. we've made it to "S".

Looking through the circle this morning before sharing it I find it full to the brim of some of my favorite people on G+ and also some of the folks who make G+ such a great place to invest my time.  There are some names you might know, but I'm sure there are a lot of hidden gems too that you haven't met yet.

I hope you will take the time to check out 114 of my friends and see if they should have a home in your circles too.

PhotoBlog Entry: "Prison Stares"
www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/10/09/prison-stares/

The York County Prison makes use of a center stair case and 4 cell blocks on each floor. You can get a real sense of what it must of been like to move around in this building, if you had the opportunity to as an inmate. This shade of yellow and green dominate throughout the building and are an interesting color choice. In this environment I find these colors to be rather freaky for a prison. Then again, maybe it’s the peeling paint and lighting that are giving me that vibe!

(Please note the York County Prison is under patrol and is posted No Trespassing. I normally do not disclose location information, but in this case the property is For Sale! This is an attempt to bring awareness to the sale of this property, requested by the owner!)

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Old York County Prison in Pennsylvania, with permission from the owner. He and his family are interested in selling the property and because of it’s history, it deserves to be photographed! One person who is helping achieve a sale is Blake Stough. Blake is a York County Preservationist, photographer and runs PreservingYork.com. Information researched by Blake and the owner along with photographs from my partner in crime Rob Dietrich and the rest of us, will be put together on a blog/website as the prisons home base!

Now let’s talk about the image. For me, this was one of the highlights of the shoot. Why? Why not! This is a preserved jail cell with prisoner art from the 1970′s! It’s Jimi Hendrix man! I had to run a 4 minute long exposurebecause... more »

There are some benefits to waking up early on the east coast, catching a sunrise once in a while! There is only one downfall to waking up this early on vacation. When the shoot is over, my wife and 2 kids are well rested and ready to drag me along for the rest of the day! I took this shot using my B+W ND110. It’s a 10 Stop Neutral Density filter and without it, I’d be lost! It’s the second most important filter I own next to my UV protective filter. It’s my go to filter for landscape photography. Even if I decide to bracket, this filter allows for great long exposure HDR. However, I’m more inclined to utilize this filter for one single long exposure. I prefer to exposure for around 4 minutes. This usually gives me the best LE effect and depending on the light, I’ll adjust mycamera setti... more »

It’s very rare that I will push my ISO to 400 when bracketing for HDR. However this is the max ISO I’ve ever utilized. No noise reduction was applied to this image and for good reason. Why would you want to soften all that texture? ISO 400 can provide you with enough sensor power to keep you exposure times low, if your pressed for time. A lot of people think HDR produces noise. Well, it can certainly add noise but it’s improper brackets and not enough of them that will produce noise in your HDRs. Did I mention how much I love tone-mapping in Lightroom 4.1 using 32-bit files? This is because of the minimal noise I get in my merged images. When processing grungy scenes like this, noise can add texture. Just make sure it’s the right noise your utilizing. I can’t recommend shooting at this ISOfor clean ... more »

This image I finished almost 2 months ago but never posted it! After going through my catalog just now, I realized it was just sitting there. Sleeping! Seeing this image reminded me again what a great shoot I had visiting this abandoned New Jersey State Hospital. Almost every shot I took that day is an image I would consider posting. Maybe it’s my developing eye that helped me to achieve this? I know for sure it’s one of the first times this has happened to me after a shoot! Do you struggle while on a shoot? Do you take too many images and realize later you wasted time taking those shots? I think this is something we all struggle with as photographers. Sometimes less is more!

www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/08/29/abandoned-theater-backstage/

The backstage area of this abandoned theater was speaking to me. The way the sunlight was shining in created a no brainer kind of shot! Just point up and shoot! Minus the lens flare, which is something I try to avoid 99% of the time, I’m really happy with the way I captured the light rays! I really hope this location is restored and legally it has to, but that doesn’t mean the current owners won’t let it go to waste. They have no intentions on restoration. They are interested in selling it though, any takers?

The roof in this building on the property of an abandoned hospital in New Jersey in beyond disrepair. With all the rain I’m seeing outside today, I can only wonder what this place looks like after a monsoon! The day we visited, we had dry conditions and I really love the way the light was fusing in! I decided to frame this off center. I find too ofter when photographers shoot a hallway they always compose head on. Something I try to avoid if possible. As always, vanishing points are a great addition to any composition. The way the light and dark areas of this scene play off each other, really bring the whole image together for me! www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/08/23/without-you-im-dust/

Without someone to love and care for you, what does your future hold? What is your value, without someone to share yourself with? All things are dependable on resources. Without these vital resources we are all just dust blowing in the wind. The wind will carry you but not support you all the time. Sometimes you rise and sometimes you fall, sometimes you fly and sometimes you crawl. Without the wind your dust becomes motionless. Without motion, we decay and become part of the earth that consumes us! Selfishness will get you nowhere. You have to give in order to receive and the ones that have given yet been left to rot, are the true victims of the selfish act!

Gathering your thoughts can be a tough obstacle to accomplish. This room reminds me of a place that people would use to do just that! Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. All for the better of course! ;) Things are coming to a crossroad for me mentally. It’s really time to buckle down and step up swinging with full force. I’m not being specific here for one main reason, which I’ve learned in my old age of 33! ;) I don’t really like to speak of things until they happen. This is a rule I live by in my personal life and now it’s becoming more apparent in my artistic endeavors as well. I’m looking forward to putting the finishing touches on my thoughts and applying them to actions!

What a difference 16 months can make. I originally posted this image back in April 2011, click here! http://bit.ly/dUsbwC

Last night while cleaning up and organizing my library files, I stumbled back on these brackets. I decided to re-process it quickly to see how natural I could make it look. I utilized Lightroom 4.1 to tone-map the 32bit Floating Point Tiff file save from Photomatix Pro 4. Which I’ve been doing on most of my latest HDR’s.

Anyway I wanted to share a quick comparison as you can see how some of my older HDR’s look really bad! ;)

Longport Point in New Jersey is a great location for landscape photography. Especially long exposure black and white images. The day I captured this shot, there was an amazing fog rolling over the area during the afternoon hours. This created a diffused horizon line, which I exaggerated here using a high key technique. I can’t stress the importance of patience when working on these types of images as the masking can be long and tedious. Not to mention a workout on your carpal tunnel!I worked with a zoom setting of 600% and a brush size of 3 pixels for most of the pipe masking. Once this was done, I was able to separate the pipeline from the rest of the image and work on those areas separately.

Today’s shot is from yesterday’s exploration, which was a success in every way. When shooting in these environments, it takes a solid plan and a solid group of explorers to achieve a peaceful mission! Some people visit these abandoned locations for the thrill of being there. Honestly, if it wasn’t for photography I don’t know how eager I’d be to enter… I’m very passionate about creating this body of work, not to mention I enjoy flipping the switch during post production. But, how could I do this differently? This image represents a new way to merge multiple brackets. The new Lightroom 4.1 handles 32-bit Float Point Tiff files saved from Photomatix Pro perfectly. Give it a try!

Every once in a while when I set out to capture long exposure images in black and white, I end up loving the color version more! This is an example of that kind of image. What attracts me are the rich tones reflecting such a warm light. The black and white conversion is quite nice as well. It will be an alternative option for any art buying clients that want to go monochrome! Speaking of buying art, most of my images can be purchased on my main website in various sizes and printing mediums. It would be an honor to have my work hanging in your space. In fact, I’m happy to of sold 2 metal prints today to a client of mine! Cheers!
