Behavior of the +1 button on webpages
what adds or does not add a +1
Last year, I noticed that certain actions would add a +1 to the counter on a webpage. In order to add a +1 to the counter, you had to add the URL to a page as a link to the Google+ post. Just adding the link in the body and for instance adding a photo or video didn't change the counter of the +1-button. Now this has changed.

When you add a link/URL in the body of the post it will count towards the total number of +1's on the webpage. This is extremely handy when you want to add a large photo to make the post much more attractive. 

The +1 which is given to a post will count back to the +1 on the webpage. Reshares will add to it as well. When a post on Google+ goes viral, you will notice this as well on the page showing +1-button.

What is the Google H840 media streamer?

The FCC is testing a mysterious Google media streamer (http://goo.gl/EIXfG). Is it a successor to the ill-fated Nexus Q?

H2G2 was a handy abbreviation for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. And 42 was the answer to life, the universe and everything. And now we have the H2G2-42, which is the model name of Google's mysterious new media streamer.

The Nexus Q, despite its great looks (courtesy of Mike & Maaike, a half-Dutch(!) industrial design firm which was acquired by Google last year) everyone knew it was just an odd experiment. The Nexus Q was given away to the attendees of Google I/O 2012, and people who pre-ordered the $299 media player on Google Play ended up receiving the device for free as well. Het Songfestival is misschien wel het ideale evenement om te becommentariëren. Leuk voor op de bank, maar misschien wel nog leuker op Twitter, dat helemaal volstroomt met hilarische tweets over #esf13.

Maar niet iedereen houdt natuurlijk Twitter in de gaten, dus experimenteren we bij NOS op 3 met een nieuwe tool. Zo kan je ook als je alleen Facebook hebt meegenieten van de leukste tweets over het Songfestival.

Wat zouden anonieme figuren met deze hondjes doen? Of zeggen de puppies wat tegen de puppies? Bedenk een mooi onderschrift, plus de leukste of deel het voor nog meer onderschriften.

Beetje raar, als je dus een lange tekst typt dan wordt niet de hele tekst getoond. Terwijl als je een hele lange foto toont dan wordt deze helemaal ook lang gemaakt.

Ik vind dit eigenlijk ontzettend jammer, want ik lees veel liever tekst dan dat ik al die plaatjes zie. Iets wat ik nog steeds mis is de mogelijkheid om de foto's gewoon uit te zetten. Ooit was daar een Chrome extensie voor, maar die werkte niet meer na een G+ update.

Die grote nadruk op beelden vind ik niet altijd zo positief, want de grootste niet zichtbare kracht van G+ zit in de interactie in comments op posts en in het vinden van content, personen en onderwerpen. Dat gaat nog steeds het beste met tekst en niet met beelden ondanks automatische hashtags.

Wat denken jullie ervan?

Met wat ik tot nu toe heb gezien van Google+ features denk ik dat facebook nu echt een probleem gaat krijgen. Nieuwe indeling, automatische hashtags, automatisch herkenning van je foto's, automatisch je foto's verbeteren en ze zijn nog niet klaar.

G+ What's Hot Serves Based On Gender

I heard a rumour this morning that if your profile is set to male, you'll get different What's Hot (Explore) content than if you're set to female.

So I opened a tab with my profile which was set to female, and from that opened a fresh tab with WH.  Then I immediately changed my profile to male and opened another WH tab to compare as closely in time as possible the difference.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

When I'm a girl, I get piles of those graphical platitudes I hate.  I have understood all along why +EcoSnark gets those more than my real profile, because she shares them to her NerdSmacked community to make fun of them (see https://plus.google.com/communities/117382348426379346016 ).  I don't plus them or share them, but they're always there.  I loathe them and it's why I have had theslide... more »

Google I/O 2013 Outlook
What are my thoughts?
Just a few people will know exactly what is going to be presented tomorrow. People like +Larry Page, +Sergey Brin, +Vic Gundotra and +Sundar Pichai will take the stage and (hopefully) amaze us with usage numbers, Google's strategy and new/updates products. 

My outlook on Google I/O 2013;

Google+
Last year we saw events, last Christmas we got Communities. What else might they have up their sleeves? 2013 would be the year of Google+ and thus far we only have see a small percentage of all the planned features.

 But what can they add? RSS-like features? + to replace iGoogle? Start HOA via mobile? Open API? Deep Google News integration?
