Through participating in this event our community will get a taste of The Arcanum Experience: Learning through constructive critiques, which is just one of the many things that happen inside the hallowed magical doors! The Arcanum Photo Critique and Make-Over event is a Google+ Hangout On Air, open to the public, scheduled for Monday February 10th at 7pm. *To Participate:* You must submit a single candidate photo by Sunday, February 9th to be considered for the random selection.  You can submit any photo to The Arcanum Google+ page at @111508817579086020312 . Since you already applied to The Arcanum - we truly hope you'll submit a photo to be critiqued. If not, no worries at all!   Either way, you can watch the live event! :) And if you're wondering when the doors will officially open for The Arcanum, the answer is as soon as magically possible!  We're doing a test run right now with all the Masters to work out any kinks.  Also, we are a _bit_ (!!) overloaded with Apprentice applications, so it will take a while to ramp up.  It may be a good opportunity for you to pop over and update your application at www.TheArcanum.com ! Thank you!The Arcanum Photo Critique and Make-Over with Rick Sammon, Varina Patel, Dave Cross, and me!2014-02-11 04:00:00905
NASA2,410,367Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008329

All the Storage You'll Ever Need

I bought this in Singapore in 2000, for my Olympus C2500L. It was a bit of a risk, because the camera specs said it could handle up to 64MB cards. Thankfully, it worked just fine.

These days, I might manage to squeeze 2 RAW files plus 2 Fine JPG files on this card (if I ever managed to squeeze the card into my camera).

I just bought a 64GB SD card for my camera for about a quarter of what this cost me 15 years ago.

Interesting

So, this new edition will allow local multiplayer games with Xbox. How long before there's an OS X edition that does likewise and then interactivity with the Pocket editions?

Is the writing on the wall for the current desktop Java edition? I suspect that it may be. I don't see Microsoft wanting to be dependent on Java any longer than is feasibly possible.

Made It

So, we finally made it to the glacier at 4500m (about 14,600ft in old money). We were a day late because Charlotte (on the left) came down very badly with altitude sickness yesterday and spent the whole day either sleeping or throwing up. Emily (on the right), however had been just fine right up until about two minutes after this photo was taken when it hit her badly. To be honest, it hit us all, except Charlotte (ironic).

We didn't last too long and had to high-tail it (very very slowly) to the cable car back down. Thankfully we brought several bottles of oxygen with us.

BTW: Our guide supplied these wonderful warm coats for us. However, when we got to the top it was only 13ºC. Hardly cold for a Brit (present heatwave excepted). I would have managed in my shirt sleeves if the damn coat hadn't been so awkward to carry.

Me and Shithead

They finally got me on a horse. I quickly named this one Shithead, it seemed appropriate and he seemed hell bent on meeting the brief. Not one thorn bush or rock was passed that he didn't try to use it to amputate one of my legs. Or at least scratch it a bit.

However, his piéce de resistance was, that every time we stopped, he'd carry on just far enough to push my knee up the backside of the horse in front. Nice.

Yeah, and on the whole 2 1/2 hour trek through the mountains he was the only one in our group to take a crap. I rest my case.

Fujifilm X100T - One Week On

I’ve now had my X100T for just over a week. The weather has been pretty awful so I haven’t managed to shoot as often as I’d like in that time.

So, first impressions:

Pros:

Contrary to what just about everyone told me before I bought the camera,  I’m not a fan of the electronic viewfinder but I love the optical viewfinder, especially with the various digital overlays enabled.  The EVF isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, it just isn’t for me, except for close-ups where parallax is an issue.

Full analog controls, a shutter speed dial, an aperture ring an exposure compensation dial. Everything just makes sense, you can see how the camera is configured without even switching it on.

Fujifilm X100T - One Week On

I’ve now had my X100T for just over a week. The weather has been pretty awful so I haven’t managed to shoot as often as I’d like in that time.

Button lock (hold down the menu button for a few seconds). This, I found totally by accident when I discovered that most of the buttons on the back of the camera were locked. It’s a great feature that makes it impossible to accidentally change any menu settings while shooting.

Cons:

Exposure under high contrast lighting seems to err on the bright side. I might even say that it is “exposing to the right”. The good news is that, so far, highlights have been easily recoverable in post-processing. The downside is that sometimes SOOC RAW files look over-exposed.  This makes initial selection of images to process slightly more difficult.

The EVF and LCD seem to be slightly too contrasty at default settings to allow any reasonable decisions to be made during playback.

In conclusion, these are just my feelings,  the pros far outweigh the cons, and the cons, are so trivial as to be not really an issue.
