It was a beautiful sunset in Washington County, Oregon last evening. Darlene and I happened to be in the area and decided to drive out to shoot some clover near Hillsboro before it passed.

I was glad to meet up with two of my good buddy's, David Leahy and Eric Vogt Photography there. Thank you David. It was great to see you again Eric buddy. :)

The Siberian wildfires are certainly a tragedy, but have given the Pacific Northwest some interesting skies at sunrise and sunset.

This is a photo that I made during a demonstration at sunrise last weekend at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Fields at sunrise. The sun came up from the horizon like a ball of fire.

Darlene and I were sure hoping that the color would flood over these clouds tonight but it all fell flat just when we needed it the most. Even though we had no color, it was a beautiful evening for a walk to the river. :)

I like to take my camera with me when I take my little dog Betty on her  walks.I have the best time when I just take my 50mm f/1.8 and a couple of extension tubes and start looking at details along the way.

Here is a collection of photos that I made a couple of days back while strolling down my driveway.

Matanuska Glacier Alaska.

This is of an ice heave and the cracking the comes along with it. Walking around this scene was ethereal and as if like a winter dreamscape. It was as if I saw something new to photograph with every step. Although the ice below my feet was feet thick, it felt as if I was going to fall through and into a lake of water underneath. Knowing that I was perfectly safe and wouldn't crack was some comfort but I still had an eerie feeling as Darlene and I browsed the selection of compositions around us as if in a market.

I came home with over 200 individual photos from the few hours that we spent there on this visit. Very few are stinkers. The place is just that amazing.

I can only imagine the photos that we will get with time to really explore this location. Please let me know if you are interested in being included in this trip.

I've photographed this glacier two different times now.  Both times presented totally different scenes. The landscape is always changing. I'm hoping to be able to shoot the aurora over the glacier some day. Maybe next year during the work shop. :)

I have a feeling that there's going to be a lot of blue in my photos for a while. :) I have so many photos of amazing things that I saw on the glaciers the last week or so.

I have photos of three glaciers. The Matanuska Glacier, the Knik Glacier and the Colony Glacier from this trip.

This is a photo of the Knik Glacier from the air. The ice pillars at the bottom of this photo are massive but because there's nothing in the scene to give scale it's hard to tell how massive they are. Trust me that this scene is so huge that I could never describe it sufficiently, verbally or visually. Each block had to be about 50' tall.

When we approached the Knik Glacier and I saw these ice chunks coming up I was mesmerized so much that I almost forgot to get some photos of the scene as it was passing.

When we approached the Knik Glacier and I saw these ice chunks coming up I was mesmerized so much that I almost forgot to get some photos of the scene as it was passing.

I must explain also that it's not the easiest thing to do to get some nice photos from the back seat of a little plane like the Super Cub.  Don't get me wrong, I was very comfortable tucked in there, but I'm 6'2" and 199.5 pounds. To get the camera positioned right so as not to include flaws in windows or wing struts was somewhat of a challenge. I took up some room and maneuvering the camera into position took a little bit of hunkering and moving into unnatural postures to get it pointed in the right direction. Thank goodness for Live View. I'm actually quite surprised at how well most turned out, including focus.

I will be updating my blog with a gallery of photos and more details and information about the trip. Once I have it posted I'll post up a link to it here on Facebook.

Joe Redington's Boat the Nomad on the Knik Flats on the Cook Inlet near Wasilla Alaska.

Joe Redington is known as the "Father of The Iditarod". The Nomad has been a fixture on the Knik Flats on the Cook Inlet since the late 1960's when Joe and Vi Redington no longer needed it to travel to their homestead on Flathorn Lake. The boat is one that's of a design made special for the mud flats. It was more of a flat bottom and had no pronounced keel so that it could sit on the flats, either accidentally or on purpose, when the water went out and not damage the boat's structure. This boat sits still in the same place as it was the day it grounded.

This boat is an often photographed subject. I was glad to get a little color in the sky when I went out to get a few shots of it myself. The amazing Chugach Mountains can be seen on the background of this view.

I've heard that the tulip fields at the Wooden Show Tulip Farm will be opening a week early this year. They've assured me that there will be blooms throughout the festival as well as this years Tulip Field Photography Workshop.

If you haven't signed up please do as seats for this are limited. This is a great opportunity to learn from me at a bargain basement price. :)

A burst of color from the sky here in Alaska last night at Hatcher Pass.

Darlene and I were marveling at the show as it arched over the top of us from horizon to horizon. The waves and movement reminded me of curtain blowing in a breeze.

We're hoping for more Northern Lights shows before we leave. We have some locations in mind for what we hope to be some better shots of it.

Alaska is awesome.

Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington in the rain. I stood on the street corner looking for a unique composition and saw this man hole cover and it's surrounding brick border shining like a sun.

When it rains, I go outside. When I go outside, I take pictures. :D

I've sure been stretched pretty thin this week, but what an excellent week it was.

Here's a photo of Darlene in Seattle all wrapped up in rain gear and holding her bumbershoot for affect. :D She and I had a wonderful time just strolling around the city after dark taking photos of the reflections in the rain.

Seattle Washington. I hear that there's something happening that's getting everyone in Seattle excited. I figure that it's my talk for the NW Photo LENS: A PAC Chapter photography club next Wednesday. ;) I hear it's going to be a sold out show. SEATTLE!!! YOU ROCK!!!

And so, because Seattle has the good taste and wisdom to invite me to their fine city, I must root for the Seahawks during the Super Bowl. Go Hawks! :D

Smith Rock Sunset in Central Oregon.

I got very lucky this last weekend in central Oregon. I had Smith Rock in my sights when I drove over the hill. I have photographed the area several times in the past but I felt that I still didn't really have any photos that I felt were above my average.

I arrived and Betty and I dove off the trail about 20 yards or so to these crumble rocks. I liked them so well that I visited them two nights in a row, both times for excellent sunset skies.

If I go too long without photographing a sunrise or a sunset I go through withdrawal symptoms as if I'm addicted. I get irritable and even bolt up from my sleep at night night in a sweat yelling "No more overcast!" before realizing my nightmare, only to slip back to sleep once again to another dream of chasing more colorful skies through fields of flowers, majestic mountains orc... more »

I get irritable and even bolt up from my sleep at night night in a sweat yelling "No more overcast!" before realizing my nightmare, only to slip back to sleep once again to another dream of chasing more colorful skies through fields of flowers, majestic mountains or crashing surf. Such is the land of my dreams.

When it happens in the land of my reality I feel nothing less than elation while I'm photographing the scene. It's almost as if, while awake, I slip into a familiar dream until the colorful skies fade. Then with my addiction satisfied and my withdrawal symptoms gone I fold up my tripod to head back to the PPV in the afterglow, excited about the photos that I made while looking forward to the next amazing sky.

As I stood in the darkness of the predawn morning in my shorts, "rubbah slippahs" (called sandals on the mainland) and my ABC Store t-shirt, I held my cup of Kona coffee in one hand and leaned against my tripod held in the other. The stars were still out in the sky and the surf was crashing at the bottom of the black lava rock ledge below. The warm Trade Winds were softly blowing across my face and through my hair while rattling the palm fronds in the trees around me. The smell of the moist flowery tropical vegetation mixed with the ocean cleansed breeze combined to create a sweet fragrance impossible to duplicate.

I stood there drinking my coffee and taking in the experience until I could perceive the warm glow of the sun just over the horizon. I set up my camera and then proceeded to enjoy and document one of the best sunrises that I have seen since I lived on Midway Island in the... more »

I love Hawaii. It's my adopted second home. I've loved it since my first visit in 1977 at 19 years old. I have a couple of trips planned for the future but they're still in the planning stage, but both are completely photography related in their purpose.

Aloha nui loa and mahalo for all of your support my hoapili's!!! :D

Smith Rock State Park, Terrebonne Oregon at Sunset.

I had an excellent weekend. I spent it with my sons celebrating their birthdays. Their birthdays are a day apart although they're two years apart in age. I'm still not realizing the fact that both of my sons aren't in their 20's any more. Serious?? They're the age that I still feel. I remember daydreaming about what my children will be like when they're adults back when they were babies. It seemed like it would be so far into the future that it would take a long time to arrive, and yet it went by in a flash. I'm so proud of my sons.

I was able to go out and shoot a couple times at Smith Rock while I was visiting. My oldest son Chris went out and shot a sunrise with me. He's just starting his photographic journey. I'm so looking forward to spending time photographing more sunrises and sunsets in the... more »

I was also glad to finally meet up with two of my favorite Central Oregon photographers, Trevor O'Hare and Matthew Grimes. Thanks for hunting me down guys! I was so glad to finally get to shake your hands. I hope to meet up with you guys again some time soon. :)

Thank you so much for all of your Likes and Comments. I appreciate them so much. I'm so glad that you enjoy what I do. :)

A Lovely Lava Lamp.

Lava pours into the ocean prior to sunrise at Kalapana Hawaii.

This is still one of the most amazing things that I have been able to experience in my life. You can't imagine the power of this scene unless you are standing there on the edge of a precipice with the surf crashing and the searing hot lava pouring into the cold ocean waters below. I can never thank my friend Bruce Omori from Extreme Exposure Fine Art Gallery in Hawaii enough for making this photo happen for me.

As I type this my heart goes out to my friends near Pahoa as they deal with the flow that has changed course and started heading their way. I'm thinking about the poor quiet, quaint little Hawaiian town and its historic buildings and their residents as they deal with this natural disaster. I'm hoping for the best for you all.  This new direction that the lava from the volcano Kilauea has taken will affect many people as they watch their homes and businesses go up in flames. I'm hoping that it bypasses HPP, Hawaiian Paradise Park where so many more homes could be affected.
