Offbeat Images922You are cordially invited to enter ONE, ORIGINAL“offbeat” image in our second @110612893892240360557 "Blue Ribbon" Gallery contest. [Our event cover image is courtesy of @108347134468694009774]  At @110612893892240360557, we define “Offbeat”, as "Off the Beaten Path", unconventional, or uncommon - NOT TO BE CONFUSED with silly, mocking, outrageous, vulgar or in bad taste. THE LIST BELOW HELPS TO CLARIFY WHAT WE'RE ABOUT.  Many of you will find that you are already doing this!  This is a home for highly skilled photographers / digital artists to showcase their art gallery quality images. Here are some examples of offbeat images that we are looking for: 1.    Everyday subjects turned into art - such as peeling paint, doors, windows, broken glass, colorful bottles, etc. - let your imagination soar 2.    Striking shadows, lines and reflections found in buildings, stairwells, sidewalks, windows, water, nature, lakes, rivers, etc. 3.    Unique antiques, architecture, bridges, alleyways, etc. 4.    Decayed, rusty, or worn objects, buildings, etc. 5.    Interesting urban / street images 6.    Interesting night images 7.    Abstract images 8.    Engaging portraits 9.    Landscapes, flowers, plant life, nature, etc. that have been uniquely captured and post-processed  - colors pushed, HDR, blur techniques, textures, painting, layering, etc. (We ARE NOT looking for traditional flowers and landscapes) 10.   Engaging post-processing techniques (NO RAW PHOTOS, PLEASE - some people will use lesser post-processing in their images - while others will make a point of producing complex digital art with advanced techniques) 11.   Monochrome / Black and White images that possess the applicable attributes above Remember: these are just examples. Unleash your creativity!  Help us make "Offbeat Images" a destination for unique, high-quality works created by skilled photographers / digital artists! ***************************************************  Here’s how to participate: 1) Circle our Offbeat Images "Blue Ribbon" Gallery theme page and each of our owners and curators. 2) Accept this contest event invitation and submit ONE original (i.e., created and owned by you) image that you have either previously shared publicly on Google+ or one that you have created recently and would like to share--first, with us in our contest. (Be sure to share only a single image--not an album, and enable comments on your post.) 3) Visit the contest event page and plus and comment on the work of the other contestants. (There will be an honor and special post on the theme page for the image with the most "+1s" at the end of each contest.)  4) Invite other digital photographers/artists, who have an affinity for "offbeat" images, to participate in the contest event. 5) Look for winner announcements and future contest event invitations in your stream.  _________________________ CONTEST RULES:  -- You may submit ONE ORIGINAL "offbeat" piece of digital photography or aOffbeat Images "Blue Ribbon" Gallery Contest - ENDED ON 8/222014-08-16 00:30:0083
Offbeat Images922THIS CONTEST ENDED ON 8/15/14 Introducing the Offbeat Images "Blue Ribbon" Gallery Contest – the bi-weekly, Google+ digital photography and art competition dedicated to honoring images (and the digital artists) that celebrate the magic and wonder found in ordinary places, spaces and things.   You are cordially invited to show off YOUR best “offbeat” image (and digital art skills)  in our inaugural contest. [You can ONLY SUBMIT ONE IMAGE.]  What is considered an "offbeat" image?  It's not a traditional landscape, portrait, or macro digital photography image. (In other words, you probably won't find one on a travel poster, art gallery wall or flower theme page.)  An "offbeat" image is an original, unconventional, high-quality (i.e., not raw, but very well composed and thoughtfully processed) piece of digital photography or art that captures the glory of often overlooked items and areas in our world. For example:  Peeling old paint, Candid or unconventional portraits, Striking or abstract shadows and/or reflections in buildings or things, Interesting or unique antiques, Narrow alleyways, Far off Main Street urban scenes, Fallow farms or old tractors, Stormy skyscapes or unusual clouds, Dried river beds, Broken windows, Abandoned factories, Beaches in winter, Overgrown paths or trails, Fields of wildflowers, Seldom used roadways, Weedy gardens, Decayed, worn or rusty objects ... The examples above are merely a guide to what some might consider ordinary things and spaces. The everyday world has lots of ordinary things and spaces that--with an artist's touch, could be captured and crafted to look or feel extraordinary. That said, PLEASE DON'T SUBMIT the following: -  Unprocessed or raw photos (no "Instagram" or snapshots) -  Images lacking thoughtful composition, lighting, focal point, color or tone balance, perspective, or cropping. ("Offbeat" by our standard doesn't mean silly, shocking, or mocking in nature. This is a serious contest for serious artists looking to express their artistic vision.) -  Landscapes/skyscapes/seascapes  (Unless you have used additional processing, such as HDR, selective focus, textures, etc.) -  Macro shots of flowers or bugs (Unless you have used additional processing, such as HDR, selective focus, textures, etc.) So ... set your artistic self free: Create your "offbeat" images with THINGS AND SPACES FOUND IN YOUR EVERYDAY WORLD that capture your eye, meet our definition and deserve our attention.  Thanks again for your participation. _______________________ Here’s how to participate: 1) Circle our Offbeat Images "Blue Ribbon" Gallery theme page and each of our owners and curators. 2) Accept this contest event invitation and submit ONE original (i.e., created and owned by you) image that you have either previously shared publicly on Google+ or one that you have created recently and would like to share--first, with us in our contest. "Blackbird's Cry"

Another piece for the September show at The Toronto Heliconian Club.

Earlier this summer, Toronto School of Art ran a course on fluid acrylics on Yupo and Terraskin. A wonderful medium on beautiful non-paper. "Blackbird's Cry" is on Terraskin which is tree-free paper made mostly of calcium carbonate. The surface is as smooth as butter. Our focus was mandalas - a meditative form of painting.

The image is part of my "Architecture of Chaos" theme, created from a stencil that I made after my very first linocut many many years ago. I suppose it could be a bikers' patch. It speaks to me of the marvellous engineering that goes into the structure and minds of birds who can navigate the air and for long distances, following the stars and who knows what other checkpoints. "A Beautiful Mind"

The best made plans of mice and men gang aft agley (Robbie Burns)

This is one of the pieces I will be exhibiting at the Heliconian Club in September. The show's theme is "The Medium is the Muse". For me, it refers to the twists and turns we make artistically that take us from some pre-conceived plan to what the medium eventually tells us to do.

This is an acrylic painting in the style of a watercolour. Once the nautilus was set, I added the background in wet-in-wet style. There were a few areas that puddled and needed definition. It was 2 in the morning when I hit on the idea of adding stencilled numbers as a disguise. I think it made the image more texturally interesting as well.

"A Beautiful Mind" refers, of course, to the brilliant Nobel Prize winning mathematician John Nash who was treated for paranoid schizophrenia. The numbers are the first 20 entries in the Fibonacci series, a model of growth in the nautilus, sunflower and galaxies.

This is part of my theme, "The Architecture of Chaos", which reflects on Nature's grand self-regulating mechanism and revisits Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" where humanity's attempts to re-engineer Nature have been tragic. ___

Blackbird's Cry

This past spring, Toronto School of Art ran a course in fluid acrylics on Yupo and Terraskin. We started out with mandalas and went from there. This mandala, possibly more like a bikers' patch for Hell's Blackbirds, is stencilled based on a wing image from my very first linocut many years ago.

Fluid acrylics on terraskin. 18 x 18" mounted on wood panel.

This piece goes into an exhibition at the Heliconian Club this September with a personal theme of "The Architecture of Chaos", documenting Nature as Lilith might have known it - the underside of the fallen tree, the cry of blackbirds in flight - far from the tyranny of the manicured lawn.

Inspired by the heavenly voice of k.d. lang singing "The Valley" (after Jane Siberry): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjETPJyB724

Sharing my Collection of Google Street View Art.

As a member of the team at +Artistic Google, I've been digitally tarting up Street View captures since 2012 and have well over 500 images at time of writing this. It's travel on the cheap.

The Collections cover is from Yukon Territory, reminding me of my own road trip up the west coast of British Columbia to Alaska many years ago. And it's a remembrance of a past self that took that trip.

The musical inspiration for this image is "Miss You" by Anders Trentemøller: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DUCKGyojpE

Exploring Africa

ArtyGooglers visited South Africa (https://goo.gl/zZvl3e) back in 2012. Now we are heading back to Africa but this time, our tour is not limited to a single country but encompasses the whole African continent.

Besides South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho, the Google Street Camera crew have travelled far and wide and have captured some famous/historical regions. Have a look at the Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria,  Abu Mena Monastery town, The Citadel and Coptic Museum in Cairo, the mighty Pyramids and the mysterious Sphinx at Giza Necropolis and the Pyramid of Djoser. Moving further south the camera crew have captured a multitude of views at Mt. Kilimanjaro. It's famed locations like Uhuru, Arrow Glacier, Lava Tower, Moir Hut, Shira Camp and Lemosho Glades are covered by orange dots (inside views - https://goo.gl/xFBKCC). Moving towards the Atlantic coast the Gombe National Park in Tanzania is now in GSV - the park is most famous as the location where Jane Goodall pioneered her behavioural research conducted on the Chimpanzees.

The GSV team has also visited the Island nation of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It's Avenue of the Baobabs is one of the natural wonders of Africa.

And here is a bonus ! Although the beautiful Canary Islands have been traditionally, culturally and politically associated with Spain, geographically these are very much part of African Continent and are included in this tour.

So join us in exploring the unexplored African Continent. This is a four-week tour running from June 1 - 28. (Jan and Jamal)___The +Artistic Google team just finished a tour of Russia. We have been back there a few times as Google Street View improves coverage. Lots of eye candy on this tour.

In 2012, shortly after the release of Philip Pullman’s retelling of the Grimm classics, which was published unillustrated in the UK and the US, a publisher approached Tan about creating a cover and possibly some internal artwork for a German edition of Pullman’s fifty tales.

Going beyond illustration, Tan revisits his long-lost love for clay, papier mache, and soapstone was reawakened and magically fused with his longtime interest in Inuit and Aztec folk art.

The earliest photographers were like magicians, who caught images of the material world on blank surfaces without pencil or paint.

Now, anyone can snap pictures with a cellphone, and add them instantly to a stockpile of online imagery more likely to exhaust than astonish. Even Photoshop’s tricks have ceased to amaze.

Some artists have responded by bringing materiality and wonder back into photography. They have returned to messy and sometimes erratic forms of photo-chemistry, reviving old methods or inventing new ones. Their works often don’t look like photography as we know it, and don’t intend to. Like old-time illusionists, these artists challenge us to figure out how the magic was done.

"Petermann Island" for +Artistic Google's March Break theme, curated by +Rob Robinson +Jamal Masood +Patrick Sheeran and me.

Inspired by +Chryssa Kotsanidou who is checking out Svalbard, I headed the other way to Petermann Island, Antarctica. After the coldest February on record and meters of snow all up the East Coast, I am sure there are, nevertheless, photographers who want to pack up their gear and shoot (in the nicest way) penguins. With a wink at those photographers, I inserted a little HDR processing in this at the outset, but then I went painterly, thinking of those scratchboards we played with as kids. This rough treatment, thanks to Topaz Impression, reminds me just a bit of Anselm Kiefer's paintings. You may have to look at the original to make out the photographer with his big lens and the wee penguins.

ROMAN HOLIDAY (February 23 - March 8, 2015)

We are visiting the Eternal City that everyone falls in love with at first sight. Cradle of one the world’s greatest civilizations, Rome has a rich historical heritage with architectural marvels; old churches, beautiful fountains, bustling piazzas and winding alleys.

In 2012, Artistic Google visited Italy twice (http://goo.gl/jfyFs5 and http://goo.gl/DeX2C9) . This time we are spending full two weeks in Rome and Rome alone. The city offers so much even two weeks tour may not be enough, so make most of it. You may explore the Rome on your own or follow in the footsteps of Princess Ann - the charming heroine of the romantic Hollywood movie "Roman Holiday" - or be more adventurous and follow Robert Langdon, the hero of Dan Brown's best selling mystery-thriller "Angels & Demons".

If you've never participated in Artistic Google and would like to, check out our "About" page to find out how.

"Storm Over Menai Strait" for +Artistic Google's tour of rivers, curated by +Rob Robinson +Jamal Masood +Patrick Sheeran

The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water which separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of Wales. The differential tides at the two ends of the strait cause very strong currents to flow in both directions through the strait at different times, creating dangerous conditions. One of the most dangerous areas of the strait is known as the Swellies between the two bridges. Here rocks near the surface cause over-falls and local whirlpools, which can be of considerable danger in themselves and cause small boats to founder on the rocks. Entering the strait at the Caernarfon end is also hazardous because of the frequently shifting sand banks that make up Caernarfon bar.

Rivers (February 2 - 15, 2015)

The Magic Bus becomes a hovercraft as we cruise the rivers of the world.

Back in 2012, when we toured Brazil, we enjoyed a glimpse of the Amazon thanks to the Street View crew. You can check out that album here: http://goo.gl/Hn8h7k

Street View has special tours of the Amazon, the Colorado and Yampa Rivers, River Thames, Canals and Rivers of England and Wales. Find them here: https://www.google.com/maps/views/streetview?gl=us

You'll find rivers everywhere - the mighty St. Lawrence, the Seine and the Vitava with wonderful bridge views, the Mississippi delta at New Orleans. Feel free to wander along meandering streams and small creeks. Search out rivers with historical stories, arroyos (dry creek beds) and aqueducts for inspiration. Go wild with your digital interpretations.

BENELUX (January 19 - February 1, 2015)

We're delighted that +Hazel Caplen is joining us at the front of the bus to point out the sights. Hazel says:

"The magic bus has visited Belgium and the Netherlands before, but with the recent addition of Luxembourg to the street view map this is a great time to tour the Benelux countries.

I used to live in Luxembourg before moving to Belgium, so I'm excited to visit of some of the things I remember, and to see your interpretations.  As well as the old city of Luxembourg, there's some fabulous countryside, the region of "Little Switzerland" (http://goo.gl/cVw8Rq), vineyards along the Moselle, some more industrial areas to the south.  Oh and banks of course.  Lots of banks ;)

Moving north into Belgium, you may get some ideas from my previous introduction (http://goo.gl/G9RN4u).  Have a peek at our 2012 Belgium album too: http://goo.gl/TTu89f

In the Netherlands there is no shortage of subjects amongst the old buildings, canals, windmills.  Maybe you'll find some colourful bulb fields. You can check out our Netherlands album from 2012 at http://goo.gl/pM3PtC

This should be a fun trip!"

If you've never participated in Artistic Google but would like to, check out our "About" page to find out how.

Please don't forget to tag +Artistic Google and  the curators +Jan McCartney +Rob Robinson +Patrick Sheeran +Jamal Masood . In addition, for this tour, please also tag our expert guide +Hazel Caplen.

"Doorway to a Dream" for +Artistic Google curated by +Rob Robinson +Jamal Masood +Patrick Sheeran and me, with our special guest curator for the BENELUX tour, +Hazel Caplen

Inspired by +Chryssa Kotsanidou, I also visited the Musee d'Art Moderne in Luxembourg and found a door that ostensibly led to a workshop but if you take the blue pill, you end up somewhere in a dream.

Musical accompaniment: My favourite Mendelssohn - Venetian Boat Song op. 30 no. 6 in F sharp minor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re-eu9q_yUU

What better image to celebrate the new year than this photo by Icelander Dagur Jonsson who hangs out on Facebook. Dagur started photographing his beautiful country in February. 2014 has been good to him! If you visit The Dark Side, check out his work!

A most creative 2015 for my friends on G+ !

"Northern Ferry" for +Artistic Google curated by +Rob Robinson +Jamal Masood +Patrick Sheeran and me.

The ferry leaves the Norwegian island of Tustna for parts north.

Departing this old year with the clean wind in our faces in the promising but uncertain new day.

With a nod to Alex Colville whose exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario ends this weekend, and there will be a last visit tomorrow to contemplate his Precisionist painting style and subliminal drama.

With a snatch of poetry from Anne Michaels in my favourite work: "There is no city that does not dream":

of spring, when we were eighteen
on the clean earth. The ferry ride in the rain,
wind wet with wedding music and everything that
