Swiss Photography Club G+95418 August 2012 (1 day)This photowalk leads us to the Big Aletsch Glacier. The glacier is located in the Bernese Alps, we will access it from the village Fiesch, Valais. We meet at 8 am, going up to Fiescheralp by cablecar. It will take us 2 to 3 hours to get to the glacier by an easy or medium hike (no uphill). At Märjelensee, a small restaurant is waiting for us. After lunch, we will take a tour on the surface of the glacier in a small group. We return to the village Fiesch in the evening by cablecar.LocationFiesch is located in the upper Valais, in 27km / 30 minutes distance from Visp. Fiesch is easily accessible by train and car.Meeting point / meeting timeWe meet at 8.00 am at the valley station of the cablecar directly in Fiesch.http://goo.gl/maps/Ms4IpWe buy tickets and take the 8.30 am cablecar up to Fiescheralp or Eggishorn.Ticket price Fiescheralp retour is CHF 26.20 (13.10 with half-tax)Ticket price Eggishorn / Fiescheralp retour is CHF 38.40 (19.20 with half-tax)Access hikeWe have two options:For perfect weather, we can take the cablecar up to Eggishorn top station for a magnificient overview over the Big Aletsch Glacier. We have to walk down a medium-steep trail down to Märjelensee (approx. 500 meter altitude difference, 1.5 - 2 hrs).In cloudy weather conditions, we hike directly from Fiescheralp to Märjelensee (2 - 3 hrs). There is almost no change in altitude, and we use a 800m long tunnel.MärjelenseeAt Märjelensee we will have lunch in the "Gletscherstube". After this, we walk down to the Big Aletsch Glacier, passing several lakes. The glacier walkA limited group of 10 people will be guided on the surface of the glacier. If time permits, we will walk to the middle moraine stream of this wonderful glacier. Outstanding photos are guaranteed! Please note that there are some reservations already.Return hikeWe have to leave the Märjelensee area latest at 4 pm in order to catch the last afternoon cablecar at 6 or 6.30 pm. Anyone who likes to stay longer or have dinner in a restaurant at Fiescheralp can take the last cablecar down at 9.45 pm (no cablecars between 6.30 pm and 9.45 pm).Gear for the hikeWhat should you wear? Well, you definitely should bring hiking boots (simple running shoes are not sufficient). If you have a pair of hiking poles, bring them. Make sure you have some light gloves, a cap and a jacket available as the evening can get cold. A spare shirt is comfortable as well. That's it.Gear for the glacier surface walkIf you are confirmed participant of the glacier surface walk, you need some durable gloves and long pants as the glacier surface is really sharp edged. Also bring band-aid and a small bandage for first aid. Important: As weAletsch Glacier Walk2012-08-18 08:00:0012

Gailen Mapes69,566Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera P-R - 20 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to October 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting September 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-10-20 10:15:59128000

Colorful Tranquility
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/colorful-tranquility/

Haven’t posted in a while. My apologies for that! I’ve been crazy busy with travelling and all sorts of other (good) things. I am back at it though, and hope to be posting a bit more regularly again in the coming months!

This image is the last one in a series of images that I captured during a long exposure sunset shoot at Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) near the Swiss town of Morges. I shot this with my Nikon D800E and made a conscious choice to turn of long exposure noise reduction on my camera. The good part of a sunset doesn’t last that long, so turning it off allowed me to get away with more images. Never again though! The D800E adds thousands of tiny white spots to each image when that setting is turned off. I was aware of that and it can be taken care off in a post … but wow … what atime-consu... more »

Walk On Water
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/walk-on-water/

First off, thank you all for the many Birthday wishes that I received via G+, Facebook and e-mail! Highly appreciated! Secondly, thanks for the patience …. yes, it has been way too long since I last posted! :)

Here is an image that I captured fairly recently during a sunset shoot with fellow Swiss photographer +Annick Jaquillard  (make sure to check out her work!). It features a line of rocks that acts as a breakwater on one of my favourite beaches at Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) here in Switzerland.

Despite the nice sunset colours in the original, I decided to go for a black & white approach. I actually ended up with two B&W versions and decided to publish them both. See my blog post! I am curious to hear which one you like best?!

I captured this image with my Nikon D800E. I used a 24mmm f/1.4 lens and stacked multiple Lee ND filters to achieve an exposure time of 6 minutes. Adobe’s Lightroom 5 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 were used to process the image.

Going Upstream
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/going-up-the-stream/

As you probably know by now, I usually don’t process new images very quickly. To the contrary … I like to sit on them for at least half a year to let them “mature” a bit. For some reason, that makes it easier to make selections and to get into the right mood to put the necessary effort in. In addition, the good ones seem to jump right at you and tell you how they want to be dealt with in post-processing after they have had a good rest. Sounds familiar? ;)

Here is an image I shot in September last year, during a 4-week shooting trip to Engadin in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The image features a mountain river up on the Albula Pass. I love how the river elegantly slaloms down from the mountain in the back. Shot this on a rather grim day. The light was quite nice though and created aninterest... more »

I climbed up a cliff to get this specific angle. Wanted to add some extra depth and give the viewer the feeling of flying into the scene.

Hope you like my choices and how it came out!?

I captured the image with my 24-70mm f/2.8 lens on a D800E. A 2-stop graduated filter was used. The image was processed with Adobe’s Lightroom 5.4.

Fading Away Into A Snowy Distance
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/fading-away-into-a-snowy-distance/

Winter hasn’t been brilliant here in Switzerland. Plenty of snow on higher altitudes, but not a lot of decent winter goodness at lower altitudes. This messed up my plan to go out and shoot minimalistic winter landscapes more often this year. In the end, I only went out to shoot them on one morning in February. This is one of the images I shot that morning.

Yes, yes, I know it is very minimal and probably not to everyone’s taste. Many of you might even find it boring. Personally, I love shooting these kind of minimalistic scenes as well as looking at minimalistic work of others. It’s all about capturing the essence of a scene and the art of leaving things out, which can be rather challenging! Things like leading lines, depth and composition become even moreimpor... more »

It’s all about capturing the essence of a scene and the art of leaving things out, which can be rather challenging! Things like leading lines, depth and composition become even more important than in normal landscape photography. In my experience, shooting minimal scenes is a great way of improving photography skills.

If you also love minimalistic photography, you should check out +Olivier Du Tré's weekly #MinimalMonday theme! Make sure to also watch the video's Olivier puts together every week, in which he reviews a selection of entries to the theme. These are a great way to learn and find new photographers to follow. Thanks Olivier!

Plus One Collection III

Here is my submission for the #PlusOneCollectionIII . I decided to go for color this time and selected this image. It's called "Colorful Tranquility" and was shot during a gorgeously peaceful sunset at Lac Léman (Lake Geneva).

I hope you will find this a worthy submission for the “Our Planet” theme of this project ran by +Ivan Makarov and his team. They again picked a great charitable cause: The Samburu Project, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, that provides access to safe and clean drinking water to communities in Kenya.

Please keep an eye on Ivan's page for more news about the project and make sure to get the book once it is finished. It will for sure be worth it! If you haven't submitted yet: today is the final day you can. Go for it!

Shooting abroad to work with different scenery is quite refreshing and inspiring. I will for sure be doing that more often in the coming years and will definitely be going back to Ireland soon. I was there only for a few days this time, but already managed to come home with quite a few nice images. This one is the first one I processed. It features the rocky Irish east coast at Greystones (Wicklow). I don’t get to shoot rocky coastlines in Switzerland, so had a lot of fun trying to find the right angles … without slipping. Unfortunately the colourful sunrise that John and Brian promised did not happen, so I had to bribe the captain of that freight ship on the horizon to stay put during a 5 minutes long exposure. I think it was worth it and hope you like how this image came out!?

I shot the image with my Nikon D800E and used 13 stops of neutral density plus a 2 stop graduate ND filter to get to an exposure time of 5 minutes. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 5.3 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Shoot For The Moon
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/shoot-for-the-moon/

Although I am a bit late, I still would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and successful New Year !!! Let’s all shoot for the moon … even if we miss, we’ll still land among the stars! I am not so much into quotes, but I kinda like this one from Les Brown and it obviously fit well with the image ;)

Wanted to share something different to start of the year. Shot this scene a few months ago during my fall trip to the Swiss Engadin region. I liked how the fog seemed to be reaching for the moon, so just had to capture this moment. Hope you like how it came out!

Majestically Rising Above The Clouds (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/majestically-rising-above-the-clouds/

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

I will be mostly off-line in the coming weeks to relax a bit and to enjoy the holidays with family and friends. I will also be out there hunting for pretty winter scenery like in this image. I captured this one around this time last year, during a snowshoe hike in the Swiss canton of Valais near Orsières. In the back you are seeing the majestic Mont Blanc Massif rising above a thick layer of clouds. I went up to an altitude of 2100 meters (7000ft) pretty early, to shoot the massif with soft early morning light. The layer of clouds was a very nice bonus. Yep, catching a scene under circumstances like this definitely gets my blood pumping! Hope you like how I captured it!? :)

Fall Colours And Fresh Snow At Lake Sils
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/fall-colours-and-fresh-snow-at-lake-sils/

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was treated to a snow dump half way through my 4-week fall trip in the Swiss Engadin region last October. The snow lasted for more than a week, so it sure limited my possibilities to shoot typical fall images. The snow did give me many great alternative photographic opportunities though and this image is one of the results.

This image features Lake Sils (Silsersee), a larch tree forest and a mountain called Piz Tremoggia in the background. I was shooting about an hour before sunset to add some nice soft light to the scene. I shot various wider captures of the scene with more of the lake, some blue sky above the clouds and foreground subjects. I however liked this tighter composition best. Hope you like it as well ?!

I shot this with my 70-200 f/4 lens (which I love, so if you are interested in a 70-200 f/2.8 VRII please let me know) and used a Singh-ray gradient ND filter to dim the sky a little bit. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 5.2.

Tranquil Dawn At Lai Da Palpuogna
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/tranquil-dawn-at-lai-da-palpuogna/

I just got back from my 4-week fall trip to the Swiss Engadin region and am starting to go through the results right now. I didn’t get everything I wanted, however that is to be expected in the Alps in Autumn. Weather tends to be very unpredictable and being in the right place at the right time can be quite a challenge. Getting a snow dump half way through my trip didn’t help either :)

This image is a first result. It features a lake called Lai da Palpuogna, which is located at the Albula Pass near Bergün in the Swiss canton of Graubünden (Grisons). The general consensus in Switzerland is that it is one of the prettiest lakes in the country. One of my goals was to catch it with some nice soft early morning light, perfect reflections in the water, larch trees in their brightest yellow fall coat and of course a touch of first snow. That combination didn’t happen unfortunately … despite visiting the lake about 10 times. I can’t complain though. It definitely ain’t a bad place to enjoy a sandwich with tea while waiting for the first light to hit the scenery and it gives me a good reason to go back next year again. I did get away with quite a few nice shots of the lake anyway … so you will get to see more of it in the near future!

I captured this image using my 24mm f/1.4 wide angle lens. My favourite lens on a Nikon D800E! I used a 2-stop and a reversed 1-stop gradient ND filter to control the brightness of the sky and the reflection in the water. Hope you like it!

End Of Fall Alpine Lake Reflections
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/end-of-fall-alpine-lake-reflections/

Don’t get me wrong, I love summer. Photographically speaking however, I am very happy that fall will be arriving in Switzerland soon. Photography life is so much more interesting once the summer is over. Because of the fall colours of course, but even more because of snow slowly painting the mountain tops white again (I find mountains without snow a bit boring to be honest).

This autumn will be a special one for me. I will be spending almost a full month in the midst of alps of the Swiss Engadin region to capture Alpine autumn in various ways (fall colours, early morning fog on lakes, first snow on the mountain tops, etc). Hoping to get enough material for a good cause project I will be disclosing later this year :)

This is an image I shot at the end of autumn in 2012, when I was out shooting with +Athena Carey (you must miss these lakes by now Athena!). The lake is Lac de Derborence in the Swiss canton of Valais. In the background you see a mountain called Les Diablerets. There used to be a glacier climbing down there not so long ago. No longer unfortunately. Still beautiful scenery up at that lake though!

I captured this image using my 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle lens on a Nikon D800E. No filters were used. The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 5.

Dancing In The Dark
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/dancing-in-the-dark/

What does a landscape photographer do on a day with dreadful landscape weather? Hide out in a cave indeed! That’s where I ran into this waterfall surrounded by big rocks. I liked how the water appeared to be dancing in between them. I decided to use a 2-minute exposure to give the waterfall a smooth appearance and to process it in black and white to create a bit of a dark and moody feel. I opted for a square crop to keep the focus on the waterfall instead of the rocks. Hope you like what I did with this!

Btw: think this looks better on white, so make sure to follow the link to the blog post as well ;)

Rocks In Misty Water
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/rocks-in-misty-water/

As a photographer in the Alps, the smart thing to do is to always think twice before putting something in the backpack. Taking less is best, as the weight of things seems to always magically quadruple in the course of a hiking day. Well … uhm … it seems that I am just not that smart … in addition I guess I am not a great learner either … I keep bringing too much! I simply find it sooooooo hard to leave something at home that I might need for that special thing I might run into in the course of the day!

A good example of gear that I could leave at home on my mountain hikes is my long exposure glass. 4 pieces in a pouch = 400 grams extra on my back! I always take it though. Why? Well, I sometimes like to be able to capture the movement of clouds around mountain tops (remember theMatterh... more »

A good example of gear that I could leave at home on my mountain hikes is my long exposure glass. 4 pieces in a pouch = 400 grams extra on my back! I always take it though. Why? Well, I sometimes like to be able to capture the movement of clouds around mountain tops (remember the Matterhorn?). I also like to be able to smoothen water in landscapes with mountain rivers a bit. Makes them more dynamic, but less busy. I also love to zoom in on details of mountain river rapids with rocks. Almost always something zen comes out. This image is a good example. The best side effect of bringing long exposure glass and using it, is that it slows you down and makes you look and see better. Of course it also gives you time to eat a sandwich. I am almost sure I had an awesome one with meatloaf when shooting this image :)

I shot this with my Nikon D3x and used a 10-stop Lee ND filter to get to an exposure time of 50 seconds. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 5 and converted it to black & white using Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2. Hope you like it!

From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/patches-of-mountain-light/

Dedicating this one to my dear friend +Athena Carey, who will be leaving Switzerland and these pretty mountains soon. You will be missed Athena!

About this image:  mountainous areas in particular really inspire me because there’s always something unexpected around the corner. That is one of the key reasons why I moved to the Swiss Alps almost 5 years ago now.

This image was an unexpected view I ran into at the end of the day, after a long hike in the mountains near Saas Fee in Switzerland. The image features the Almagellerhorn at sunset with the Pizzo d’Andolla in the background. The scene is lit in patches with the last light that managed to squeeze over a neighboring mountain.

I was aware of that and it can be taken care off in a post … but wow … what atime-consu... more »

I used a 10-stop Lee ND filter to get at an exposure time of 2 minutes. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 5 (a touch slower again ain’t it). The white spots were removed using spot healing in Adobe Photoshop CS6. This was actually the first time I used Photoshop on a published image!

Lake Sils At Sunrise
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/lake-sils-at-sunrise/

This image features Lake Sils and a mountain called Piz da la Margna at sunrise. They are located near St. Moritz in the Swiss Engadin region. Engadin is one of my favorite regions in the Alps, because Mother Nature tends to be very generous over there with key photography ingredients like color (in trees, sunsets and sunrises), fog and fast changing weather, especially in Autumn. This is one of the reason why I will be organizing a workshop / photo tour in Engadin next October!

This image is a 4 minute exposure that was intended to be in color. The sunrise was giving the peaks to the left a nice orange glow and I liked the yellow in the sky at the end of the lake. In this case I didn’t use a long exposure to smoothen the water though. I opted for a long exposure to make the sky less busy. The sky was full of dots of clouds which made the sky (and reflection) a bit too overwhelming.

I often convert my long exposures to black and white. Partly because I tend to like them better in black and white and partly because long exposures in color are rather tricky to get right. The ND filters mess up the white balance and also add a bit of a color cast. These things can be fixed in post-processing, however that is often not an easy task. It wasn’t easy in this one either.

Hope you like my choices and how it came out ?!

A combination of a Lee 10-stop and 2-stop ND filter was used to get an exposure time of 4 minutes. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 4.4.

From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/standing-tall/

Yes, I know, I know … spring has started (where I am at least). Going to post one last winter scene though. Hope you don’t mind!? :-)

In the past few months, I have seen many photographs come by that feature solitary trees in their snowy surroundings. Wanted to balance things a bit by posting this image of not so lonely larch trees in their winter coat. I shot it last January during a hike near La Fouly, a small village located in the Val Ferret valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. It was quite windy and about minus 25°c (minus 13°f) that day. For some reason I liked this scene instantly when I saw it. Maybe because of the touch of fresh snow on the branches of the trees? Or because of the shape that the trees form together? Anyway … hope you like it as well!

I brought my new Nikon 70-200 f/4 lens along for the first time that day for testing. This is one of the results. In general the lens gives very nice results across the frame and great micro-contrast and details at all focal lengths. Looks like I will be selling a 70-200 f/2.8 lens soon :-)

Mystic Mountain
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/mystic-mountain/

I love mountains, fog and snow, so I am always happy when I can combine these three elements in an image. I captured this one during a snowshoe hike last January. It was a bit of a dull day with lot’s of fog and clouds … and it was way too cold. Most of the trail was in the shade, so there weren’t a lot of wide-angle opportunities. The fog around the mountains on the side of the trail was rather nice and interesting though, so I decided to focus on shooting them to see if I could get something intimate and dramatic. The only thing I badly needed was a 4th element to play along: the light. And it did!

No filters were used for this image. I already knew that I was going to process this one in B&W when I shot it. I used Adobe’s Lightroom 4.3 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 to get to thisresult.more »

I am quite busy at the moment with reviewing and processing the snowy mountainscapes I have been shooting in the past few months. The winter unfortunately hasn’t been brilliant for photography over here, however it does look like I got away with some nice ones :)

The coming few months, I will focus on long exposure photography a bit more again. Haven’t been doing a lot of LE work lately and I miss it. This image was shot last month, during the only LE outing I have had since December last year. The conditions weren’t brilliant, but it did give me a chance to test 2 new lenses. This image is a minimalistic 4 minute exposure and features a simple sign post on a rock in Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). I opted for giving the image lots of negative space. Hope you like it!?

Carved In Snow
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/carved-in-snow/

I usually spend quite some time (together with my partner +Deborah Vos) figuring out where to go for a photo hike in the Alps in winter. We look at maps, scout the terrain on Google Earth, figure out where the sun will be at what time during the hike, check if the area got fresh snow during the past days, see if there will be clouds and fog and how those are likely to develop, etc, etc. The weather part helps a lot. The maps and terrain part is a bit tricky though, as the impression you get from it can be very wrong.

I shot this image at the Simplon pass, one of the few passes that connects Switzerland with Italy. The location wasn’t very high on my list, as I didn’t expect too much from it based on earlier research and passing it in summer. We ended up going there anyway a few weeks ago, because it was the only place where the sun was expected to break through the clouds. So happy we did! Turns out that it was a place where not a lot of people go, with very nice wide views, huge snow dunes and nice curvy terrain with great details. There was loads of deep virgin snow as well. All in all a great place for photography! Our dog Izzi had lots of fun as well. Most of the time, only his head and tail were visible :)

In the background you see a mountain called Spitzhorli (2737m/8980 ft). The structure you see in the snow in the foreground is a result of the strong winds that are quite common up on a pass like this. I used my 14-24 lens at 18mm to include the carved snow to add some foreground interest and depth to the image. Initially I was afraid I overdid it, but I like how it came out. Hope you do to!

Shadows and Light
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/shadows-and-light/

Some images take a few seconds to process, some a few hours, some days and some several months. This one falls in the latter category. Why? Well, I really like it a lot and I wanted the processing to be just right … this usually means that I process it from scratch various times, let it be for a while and come back later to see if it needs further tuning. It is not that I PhotoShop it to pieces (I don’t even use PhotoShop). It sometimes just takes time to find the right balance between tones, contrast and structure in various parts of the image. Gradually the differences between subsequent versions become smaller … luckily …

This was shot on the same night. What I like the most in this image is that the pier is lit sideways, which creates a nice play of shadows and light.

I used a Lee 10-stop ND filter and a Lee 2-stop ND filter to get to an exposure time of 4 minutes. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 4.2 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Unspoiled
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/unspoiled/

The past month, I have already spent quite some time hunting for nice alpine winter scenes. I haven’t been very lucky with the weather and light conditions so far, but it is worth getting out anyway to get to know new areas for future shooting trips.

At this time of year the sun doesn’t reach a lot of places yet. So luck needs to be helped a bit now and then. For this image, I decided to postpone the hot chocolate and to snowshoe up a steep hill to reach a place where I suspected the light to be hitting things nicely sideways. It did and as a bonus the snow up there was still unspoiled. Came away with a nice series of winter shots.

This is my submission to the #PlusOneCollection2012 project: the majestic Matterhorn.

*Update: very honored that the image will actually be included in the book! Thanks +Ivan Makarov and +Andy Lee for all the efforts!

I thought it would be hard to pick one image from 2012, but surprisingly enough it wasn't. I have tried to capture the Matterhorn in various ways and from various viewpoints, but was never satisfied. The Matterhorn is one of the most photographed peaks in the world, so it is very hard to be original. This summer I finally managed ... at least in my eyes :) Used a long exposure of 2 minutes for this capture.

Stillness
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/stillness/

Wishing you and your loved ones a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!!!

The coming two months I will be focusing on shooting and publishing snowy mountain landscapes, so I thought I’d better squeeze another LE in :)

I ran into these 4 rocks last month, when I was scouting the coastline of Lac de Neuchâtel for LE locations together with fellow Swiss photographer +Dominique Dubied. I spent quite some time with these stones, to find the right angle. It was a very hazy day with slow-moving clouds, so I opted for a 5 minute exposure to create a bit of a mystical look. I used 3 Lee ND filters (10+3+3) to get to an exposure time of 5 minutes. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 4.2 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Hope you like it!

Ending Silence
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/ending-silence/

It’s been a while since I posted a long exposure image, so here is a new one. I shot it early July, when I met up with +Joel Tjintjelaar, +Michael Diblicek, +Heine J Melgaard and a few other people near Domburg in Zeeland, The Netherlands. The weather that day was a disaster. It was raining way too hard during most of the day and when the rain finally went away it was way too windy. I shot this image during a long-awaited short period of relatively quiet weather … which inspired the title. I like how the contrast between the brewing sky and the silky water came out. Hope you like it as well!

To create this image, I used a Lee 10-stop plus a Lee 2-stop ND filter to stretch the exposure time. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 4.2 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

A Lake, A Moody Sunset And A Swan
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/a-lake-a-moody-sunset-and-a-swan/

I have been pretty busy so far this month with catching up on processing images. November is the ideal month for that: the leaves have fallen here in the Alps and there is not a lot of snow yet. I did free up some time last week to scout a few long exposure locations with +Dominique Dubied near Lac de Neuchâtel in the west of Switzerland. Unfortunately there wasn’t a lot of wind, so no images with silky lakes and clouds this time.

As you can judge from the image below, we did get a nice moody sunset at the end of the day. I shot quite a few images while this sunset scene evolved. Partly to shoot it with different perspectives, but mostly because the swan didn’t want to stay put. So I have a lot of sunset images with a blurry swan as well as images featuringhis/h... more »

I used a Lee 1-stop graduated ND filter to dim the sky just a bit. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 4.2.

In Thin Air (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/in-thin-air/

Many of my mountain landscapes are captured using conventional composition rules, so mountain peaks in the background with other elements in the foreground and/or middle to lead the eye to the peaks and to complement them. I do like to challenge these rules though and love trying different approaches. One of the things I like to do for instance is to go up a mountain and shoot the surrounding mountains from there to get a different perspective.

Using a wide-angle lens up on a mountain is fun, however I prefer to use longer focal lengths to get closer and to create more “intimate” images. I usually point the lens downwards a bit, compose very tightly and avoid including too much sky. I love the perspective you get by shooting in this manner. I usually point the lens downwards a bit, compose very tightly and avoid including too much sky. I love the perspective you get by shooting in this manner. It creates a bit of a “birds view” and gives the viewer the feeling of flying into a scene. I published and image called Come fly with me a while ago which had that perspective. The image above is another good example.

For the image below, I went up the Diavolezza mountain. The Diavolezza (which is Italian for “She-Devil”) is a mountain in the area of Pontresina in Graubünden. I went up to an altitude of 2978 meters (about 10.000 feet), which gave me a spectacular view in various directions. The mountain in the foreground to the left is called Piz Alv and has an altitude just a bit lower than the altitude I was shooting from. The mountains in the back are a touch higher. I was very lucky that morning. The mountains were bathing in soft morning light and there was fresh first snow on top of the mountains and a bit of fog as well. Hope you like it!

I captured this image using my 70-200 f/2.8 lens on a Nikon D800E. No filters were used. The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.2.

Waiting For The Light (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/waiting-for-the-light/

Mid October, I went up to the Derborence valley in the Valais region in Switzerland very early in the morning. The plan was to shoot the alpine lakes over there with fall colors in soft morning light. In retrospect I could have slept in, as I found out that the light only starts to hit the valley at around 10:30 am. Although mountains are one of my favorite subjects, they do get in the way of light sometimes … ;-)

I used the waiting time to scout the valley a bit better and to look for a lake that I hadn’t found before: Lac Blue. And I found it! It turned out to be a bit of a hidden treasure. It is a crystal clear lake full of trouts and surrounded by a variety of trees in different colors. The lake had a bit of a surreal fairy tail look and feel to it. When I discovered it,I s... more »

When I discovered it, I sat down on a rock and quietly enjoyed my breakfast and coffee with a gorgeous view while I waited for the light to arrive.

As soon as the light arrived, I made a tour of the lake and got away with a nice series of fall images. The image above was one of the first ones I shot. The light was still nice and soft and there was hardly any wind. I composed the image a bit tight to give you the impression that you are sitting next to me on that rock to have a coffee and to silently enjoy nature’s beauty with me. I hope I managed!

I captured this image using my 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle lens on a Nikon D800E. No filters were used. The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.2.

Just Before The Sun Sets (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/just-before-the-sun-sets/

When I am out in the Alps, I always start to get nervous about half an hour before the sun starts to set. Am I in the right place? Do I have a foreground subject? Is the sky interesting enough? How will the light hit the clouds? Do I have the right lens for the composition I have in mind? Should I maybe quickly relocate to that other spot just 10 minutes away? Usually I just stick to where I am, work with what I have and take the time to watch the scene evolve. The nerves always make place for adrenaline rather quickly when I start to work the scene. The adrenaline is subsequently almost always replaced by amazement about how beautiful nature can be at the right time of day.

I captured this image last week at the summit of the San Bernadino Pass in the Swiss canton of Graubünden (Grisons). The lake in the foreground is called Laghetto Moesola. In the background you see two mountains: Piz Uccello (left) and Piz de la Lumbreida (right). The fog came into the scene only a few minutes before I captured this image. A few minutes later the fog covered both mountains and the sun was no longer coloring the clouds orange/yellow. That other spot just 10 minutes away was already covered in fog when I captured this scene

I shot this image at 20mm using my 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle lens. I used my D800E, which I am starting to appreciate more and more. No filters were used. The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.2. Hope you like it!

The End (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/the-end/

Last week I went out to Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) hoping that the weather would clear up just in time to allow me to shoot the sunset with some drama in the sky. And it did. The color results I got that evening were quite nice. However, I couldn’t resist converting this particular one to black and white.

The image features a line of rocks in the lake, which is there to break the waves a bit. In the background you can see the silhouette of the French Alps. As the waves were actually rolling over these rocks that evening, I shot the scene with an exposure time of 4 minutes to create a bit of a mystical effect on the rocks. The dark clouds and the soft evening light helped to create a moody atmosphere. Hope you like it!

From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/abandoned/

In May this year, I was at Lac de Neuchâtel in Switzerland for a bit of long exposure shooting and shot an image called Tranquility. It was quite windy and foggy that day. Pretty nice conditions for this type of photography. Early this month I went back when weather conditions were comparable, to see if I could shoot more images with the same tranquil feeling to them. This image is one of the results.

Not everybody likes minimalistic black and white images like this. I however am appreciating them more and more. In addition they are fun to create and the actual shooting is quite relaxing. A welcome change from all the alpine landscape work I do ... a bit of relaxed lakeside shooting is a fantastic way to get rid of any muscle pains that result from long uphill hikes

Crystal clear (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/crystal-clear/

A few weeks ago, I was hiking up at the Lacs de Fenêtre near the Grand Saint-Bernard pass at the Swiss/Italian border. This area is well known for its nice lakes as well as its view on the majestic Mont Blanc massif. After shooting the larger lakes, I ran into this small mountain lake. The bottom of the lake is covered with copper colored rocks, which is typical for that region. In the background you see a Mountain called Point de Drône … which I climbed afterwards.

I captured this image using my 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle lens. Shot it at 14mm to emphasize the rocky bottom of the lake and to give the image a bit of extra depth. I used a 2-stop Singh-Ray graduated filter to control the brightness of the sky a bit. The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.1. Hope you like it!

The most dominant peak in the Zermatt region is the Matterhorn. Its summit is 4,478 metres (14,690 ft) high, making it one of the highest peaks in the Alps. A Mountain River Close To Sunset (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/a-mountain-river-close-to-sunset/

Time for a color image again! This photograph was taken in the Swiss National Park in the Swiss canton of Graubünden (Grisons). This park is a great place to be for landscape photographers, especially in late spring and autumn. Plenty of great hiking trails and loads of unspoiled scenery and wildlife at hand!

The image features a typical rocky alpine river that is floating towards a trio of mountains in the background. The mountains are lit by the last mountain light as it was fairly close to sunset. I captured this image using my 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle lens. Shot it at 14mm to give a lot of depth to the image. No filters were used (quite an investment for this specific lens). The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.1.

I had two alternative captures of this scene. One with and one without that old tree trunk to the right. I opted for the one with the tree trunk. Think the trunk balances the composition a bit. Was I right?

Alpine Winter Panorama In B&W (please view large!)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/alpine-winter-panorama-in-bw/

This is an image I shot last January, when I was hiking down from the Gornergrat station to Riffelberg in Zermatt. It is a panoramic view of the Weisshorn (4,505m/14,783ft) and a few surrounding mountains like the Mettelhorn, Schalihorn and Brunegghorn. I was shooting at an altitude of 2755 meters (9038ft). From that same location, you can see some of the highest peaks in Switzerland, like the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. If you plan to visit Switzerland, make sure to go there!

I shot this image with a 2-stop gradient ND filter to control exposure a bit. Processed the image in Lightroom 4.1 and Silver Efex Pro 2. The range of shadows and highlights in this image didn’t make the conversion easy. I have attempted to convert it many times in the past fewm... more »

Stepping Stones
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/stepping-stones/

When I first saw this scene, the two rocks in the water reminded me of stepping stones on the way to the beautiful mountains on the other side. Like phases in life that need to be lived to eventually get you where you want to be. I spent the first 40 years of my life working towards fulfilling my dream of living in the Alps during the other 80 years of my life and to work there as a photographer (yes, I am planning to be at least 120 years old one day). It was a challenging journey, however I did enjoy it and got there in the end! The scene also reminded me of something a ski teacher told me a long time ago, when he send me down a very steep triple diamond black trail somewhere in Canada with waaaaaay to many trees: “Forget about the trees. This image features a couple of rocks in Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). In the background you can see the silhouette of the French Alps. I captured this image near Morges in Switzerland. I used a Lee 10-stop ND filter and a Lee 2-stop ND filter (to achieve an exposure of 60 seconds) in combination with a 2-stop graduated ND filter from +Singh-Ray Filters (to keep the sky in check). Alpine Lake Reflections At Sunset
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/alpine-lake-reflections-at-sunset/

I published many black and white (long exposure) images lately, so I figured it was time again to post in color :)

This photograph features a small Alpine lake called “Lej Pitschen”. It’s located at the top of the well-known Bernina pass in Graubünden (Grisons), Switzerland. In the background you see the mountain Piz Cambrena, which has an altitude of 3606 meter (11.830ft).

I captured this image at the end of May (last weekend). The lake was still partly frozen. Last mountain light (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/last-mountain-light/

Earlier this year I organized a Google+ photo walk to Leysin, which is a small town in the midst of the Swiss Alps of Valais. Unfortunately it was quite hazy that day and it was hard to get really nice shots. Luckily, it cleared up a bit at the end of the day and I was able to get away with this photograph of the snow-covered Grand Muveran and Petit Muveran mountains. Both are about 3.000 meters (10.000 ft) high.

At this part of the photo walk only +Wilfried Haferland, +Athena Carey and +Deborah Vos were still with me :)

Tranquillity (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/tranquillity/

A few weeks ago I visited Lac de Neuchâtel near Estavayer-le-Lac in Switzerland with +Athena Carey and +Michael Diblicek. Two awesome photographers ... and even more importantly very nice people!

The plan was to do some LE photography together. It was a very windy day with dark clouds. Luckily there were also a few little patches of blue, to let some sunlight slip trough once in a while. We searched for interesting locations along the borders of the lake for quite a while. At some point we got lucky and stumbled into a little hidden beach with 6 or 7 abandoned piers in various states of decay. So we found our subjects, had some heavy waves, an interesting sky with cloud movement and patches of light hitting the lake. Great ingredients for long exposure photography.

Because (and despite) of the wind, I decided to do go for exposures of one to three minutes to smoothen the water as much as possible. I expected the waves and light patches to create a nice milky and soothing effect in the resulting images. The shot above is a one of the images I got away with: a rough looking lake magically turned into a tranquil one. I hope you like it!? Best viewed large and on white ... just follow the blog link :)

I used a Lee 10-stop ND filter in combination with a Lee 3-stop ND filter. I processed the image with Adobe’s Lightroom 4 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Silky Smooth
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/silky-smooth/

A few weeks ago I hiked in the Val d’Areuse near Boudry in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel, home of the Gorges de l’Areuse. This is a narrow gorge through the limestones of the Swiss Jura, shaped by the Areuse river. One of the things I was after, was long exposures of the flowing water and nature’s details in it.

It is always a bit hard to predict how a long exposure image of a mountain river will look. I tend to be on the look-out for stones or wood with a bit of character or a special color. In addition, I look for light patches that can give a long exposure image a special look and feel. I think that in this case I found a nice combination. Hope you like it (best viewed on white ... have to visit my blog for that though)!

A few weeks ago I posted an image with an aerial view of the Mont Blanc massif (see the post: Come fly with me). I went back to the same area at the end of February, together with +Athena Carey to grab a few additional shots whilst it was still Winter. Here is one of the images I shot that day. This time we are looking up from the valley. I really loved how the light was hitting the mountains. I shot it at 140mm to close in on a specific section in between the mountains to add a bit of depth to the image.

Dedicating this one to my Swiss friends +Wilfried Haferland and +Daniel Arndt, who actually dare to climb up these alpine "walls"!!!

Schluchhorn North Face On A Winter-Day (view large)

The image was shot last December at the end of a cold winter-day. It features the Schluchhorn. Both mountains are part of the Diablerets massif in Switzerland. In this image the Schluchhorn is barely catching a bit of last light.

I decided to process the image in black and white using Silver Efex Pro 2, to create a bit of a dark and moody effect.

My longest lens was my 24-70 f/2.8 … ouch … after doing some landscape shots from the ridge, I decided to join the fun anyway and to put my camera in fast mode. Shortly after, this bearded vulture decided to do a few fly-by’s at close distance. So impressive! I fired away hand-held at the highest speed I had available (about 5 fps) and to my own surprise got away with a decent series of tack sharp images … lucky me!!!

Bearded vultures are huge. This bird is 94–125 cm (37–49 in) long with a wingspan of 2.31–2.83 m (7.6–9.3 ft). They were once extinct in the Alps but have been re-introduced in the 1970′s. They are still a threatened species within Europe though.

I am afraid that this big fellow has triggered an urge to do more big bird photography … it was kind of like trout fishing … and quite exciting! Thank you +Sumit Sen for helping me with this one!!!

Come Fly With Me (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/come-fly-with-me/

This image above was shot during a hike near the Grand Saint-Bernard pass in Switzerland and features the mont Blanc Massif. I framed it quite aggressively to try to draw you into the image and to give the impression that you are "flying" towards them. I processed the image in black and white to emphasize the raw nature of these mountains. Most of the peaks you see have an altitude between 3500 and 4810 meters (11500 to 15750 ft), with the Mont Blanc (4810m/15750ft) being the highest.

After posting two typical Swiss winter landscapes with Alps, snow, pine trees and a blue sky, I thought it was time for something completely different. Culan mountain (Diablerets) on a sunny winter-day
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/culan-mountain-diablerets-on-a-sunny-winter-day/

I captured this image during a recent hike in the Swiss Alps. As you can see, it was a beautiful bright and sunny winter-day!

The image features Culan mountain, with an altitude of 2,789 meters (9,150 ft). It is located in the Swiss Alps, near Ollon, and is part of the Diablerets massif. As most mountains in the Diablerets massif, it has a very characteristic and impressive appearance. I included a snowy meadow and pine trees in the frame to emphasize the beauty of the surroundings I was hiking in.

I am a bit late for #MountainMonday by +Michael Russell, so let's try #MyTownTuesday by +Melanie Kintz and +Eric Leslie for a first time, as this is actually just around the corner where I live :-)

Swiss Alpine Meadow In Winter Time
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/swiss-alpine-meadow-in-winter-time/

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius. ~ Pietro Aretino

I have been enjoying the Winter season with family and friends in the past few weeks and spent a lot of time outdoors for shooting as well. Been doing that on snow shoes a lot: a terrific way to get to places you would otherwise not discover! Here's an image I shot during a hike near Villars-Sur-Ollon in Switzerland. It features an alpine meadow in winter time with snow-covered pine trees and two typical Swiss barns. In the background you see a mountain called the Grand Muveran (3051m). Ain't Winter beautiful? Hope you like it!
