Introduction to Water Mechanics

A male Vermilion Flycatcher introduces the concept of “water faucet” to 2 of his 4 fledglings.

Vermilions are smart, sassy and very friendly little guys.  This one was resident on a school campus and was not only used to all sorts of people, but understood how to get attention.  He was having a time of it with all 4 babies demanding food and, hopefully, water.  They were totally out in the open on a picnic table, then to the adjacent faucet, then back.  As usual, they completely ignored me – except for the red guy who was clearly saying, “Put the camera down and turn on the water!”  The water provides not only moisture, but attracts flying insects and a ready meal supply for all.   It was one of the engaging and delightful afternoons I’ve had.

Hi Google+ - 

I know this has been addressed before.  Plenty of feedback forms have been sent.  People have posted about it. And it’s now way past time for this to be fixed.  
I like to share posts.  A lot of us like to share posts.  It’s the nature of the community and central to our experience.  However, when I share posts, all the comments and plus ones stay with my post and do not attach to the original post as they should.
I can disable commenting and tell people to click through, but people don’t do that and why should they?  They assume it’s like Facebook and the original person is going to see the Likes and be able to read the comments.  Logical.  The way it should be.  
When a post of mine is shared, I’d like to respond to any comments, but unless I track down every share and share of share, it’s not going to happen.  That’s wrong.

So I threw out the question last week last, asking people if they wanted a photography assignment.  I wasn’t really looking to teach anyone, I was just looking to throw out a little motivation. Sometimes we all need a little kick in the ass to get the juices flowing. I thought of it as a photo editor handing out a job (assignment), not necessarily a teacher giving out lessons.  The response was pretty awesome.  It has been fun seeing all these great photos coming in. People have really put some thought into the assignments I have given them.  

I only thought it was fair to ask the group what MY assignment would be and +Shannon Adelson threw this at me.

Goodbye, my dearest boy D’Artagnan...  My heart is breaking - I miss you so much.  Today was the first sunrise without you.  Today you weren’t pushing the curtains open at first light to greet the day, to be part of a new dawn.  Today, you weren’t there next to me, touching as I opened the window and we shared the sunrise.  You won’t be curled up at my side, napping in the midmorning light or being a total goof, racing around.
Today, I am totally alone and the huge hole you have left is only exceeded by the infinite joy you brought every day.  I wish you an eternity of happiness...

I might as well confess: I am bibliophile. And I blame the acquisition of this condition on a little essay I read when I was 23 by Walter Benjamin: “Unpacking My Library: A Talk about Book Collecting.” Sure my father collected rare antique editions of books, and some of my earliest memories are of going to antique dealers and auctions and watching while he bid on books. I recall in fact that he had a book in his library that was over 400 years old! But despite all those Saturdays trudging out to dealers, I never fullyunderstood the fas... more »

Today for #SAturdayStyle   curated by myself and +lynn langmade  I’m sending out the latest portraits I took of my son Darcy –yes son—Langmade. 

I decided to take this series of shots because  I wanted to capture the last days with my son and his magnificent hair.. Yes, this is a boy and his name is Darcy… So the back-story on this is in a previous post when I introduced everyone to him. In this post, Mr. Darcy, I talk about how ‘out there’ this 5 year old tot is, and I describe how my son loves his hair long  and been very attached to it (and the color pink). After the Storm

Tucson had some incredible weather yesterday that changed every few minutes and filled the sky with drama and turned the landscape into something almost alien.  I was photographing as much as I could when I wasn't just staring in wonder and then this happened!  Sorry I didn't get more of the land, but you know?  I'll take it.

Mated Red-shouldered Hawks, Pale Florida Race

A pair of Red-Shouldered Hawks perch on a pine and scan for prey in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.  These are the pale Florida race of these hawks, looking even paler in the bright sunlight here.

The Healing Blanket - Part II

I put my hand down and rubbed the soft comfort, smiled at the upside down peacock that looked so silly at that angle and contemplated getting the lint roller and vacuum. Then I stopped and was overwhelmed at the enormity of this gift that has become a part of the fabric of my life.  

Because of this magic fuzzy gift, I have faced and conquered  each new challenge with confidence.  Your energy allowed me to handle two more chemo sessions than are normally given because I was strong enough.  It allowed me to walk with confidence through 2 weeks of daily brain radiation this past month and still laugh. It allows me to deal with the side effects of everything, knowing that they are temporary, but the blanket and your energy are forever.  It allows me to get up and shoot the sunrise and celebrate each new day even when I want to stay under itsbeau... more »
