"Communion"

Not much luck chasing the aurora last night with a keen guest from the West Coast, but we had a great time experimenting with light at Lake Minnewanka just before dawn.

I was wearing two headlamps for this self-portrait. One was set for a more diffuse glow in order to get the green halo on the lake. The other was set for a beam - I liked how it picked up pollen in the air above my head.

SmugMug Pro +Joe Azure (aka Mr. Golden Gate) recently was at SmugMug HQ and we wanted to capture the side of him that most people don't get to see. The Bad Ass side.

Smugger in Chief +Chris MacAskill has been itching to try his hand at the +Joel Grimes style of composites, so he gave Joe a leather jacket and had him stand in front of a white backdrop.

After scouring the internet for the perfect background, one of our summer interns, Alexis, found this gritty Chicago photo by photographer Monika Thorpe on Flickr, and we knew it was perfect for #TheAzure.

China Going Meta-Cyber

Here's a photo I just took in the capital of China - Beijing. I got up on top of one of the television towers at night. It was a wild night full of lights and colors! I'll put up a video soon on my YouTube channel at http://www.YouTube.com/stuckincustoms

And yes, I took this with the NEX-7. Even though I had my Nikon D800 with me, I continued the "experiment" of only going mirrorless in China! I'm compiling results now... here's a little preview though. Even at 100 ISO on a tripod, I am still getting compounded noise in the resulting shot. It requires a bit more post-processing than before, but the amount of time there is counterbalanced with the amount of time and effort required in getting the camera in a shooting situation. "Blown Away"

First image from another fantastic night out. This was the scene near Bow Summit this morning at around 3:45. The Milky Way seemed to emerge directly from Crowfoot Mountain. I already miss the northern reaches of Banff National Park!

Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park, Canada

When we arrived at the Emerald Lake storms clouds were gathering overhead, but we ignored the warnings because the stunning beauty of the lake was simply overwhelming!! We grabbed our camera gear and decided to answer the call of the wild and went wandering around the lake.

How was this photograph created?
This photograph used ND Filters and circular polarizer to bring out the details and colors in every part of the image. The ND Filter allowed me to use really slow shutter speed to remove all textures from the water so that a viewer attention is focused on the colors. The final image required a manual blending to bring out the details in the sky and the mountains.

Paradise Crossing, Havasu Falls, AZ

One of the places that resembles paradise is Havasu Falls. The blue-green water or the Havasu Creek provides a contrasting colors palette against the orange cliff of the canyon. It is ALMOST impossible to take a bad photograph at this place...but the access to this location is difficult as it requires you to backpack (or rent a mule or fly in via helicopter).

How was this photograph created?
Simple!!!! Point and shoot with a circular polarizer. But this photograph is less about the falls and more about the human element. I wanted to take a photo from this location when +Varina Patel was crossing the Havasu creek. I waited until her small figure in red jacket would stand out against the blue-green waters of the creek. I guess I will rethink my workflow which includes a converting of Canon Raw files in DNG files. And probably it is better storing masterfiles in TIFF than in PSD. What do you think? GOD how could I bee so stupid: I CONVERTED ALL MY CANON RAW FILES FROM THE LAST YEARS IN DNG FILES! And I didn't saw the original RAW Files!!!

I updated my profile photo. Newer thought I would do this one day. But this is an easy way to say NO!! Instead of sitting and waiting what will happen.

Let us all tell Adobe: We are the customers!!!

Let us tell Adobe what we are thinking about the new marketing strategies!

- I don‘t want to rent my software. I want to posses it.
- I don‘t want hidden price increasings, my clients don‘t want them too
- I want Adobe to finish Software. (Lightroom 4 is still laggy). I don‘t want Adobe to hide updates in the cloud.
- I want competitors to find the right answer to this bull shit...

To be clear: Lightroom and Photoshop are the most important tools I am using. But I am willing to make a change if Adobe stays with their marketing strategies and competitors are doing their jobs now.

Adobe sucks: The only thing that is missing in the newest marketing strategies is that they claim to posses all rights on our photos after putting them in the cloud.

Guess it is time to tell Adobe that they are going too far.
Even using spotify I am able to posses music.
It would be better if they are concentrating on unfinished products like Lightroom. To me it seemed that they are fixing performance issues with a new product calling LR5.
Where are the competitors delivering better solutions?
We have to do something!

Watching +Trey Ratcliff s Video Tutorial "New Zealand". Guess this is a great way for ambitious landscape photographers to get to some "next levels" (Creative Live speech here, hate it... :-) ). It feels nice, being in the field with Trey. New Zealand must be a great place to shoot and live.
