Jeff Smith62,381Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Olav Folland40,026So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
1,775,119This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) @104871116467578397659, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! Check it out here: http://goo.gl/3qH2vN She is also the contributor of our theme photo on this event. Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait with a "Sense of the Bizarre" theme. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Inspiration* Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/M7XTQ and ask away! We have categories for questions and discussion and are happy to help with anything. Megan McGuire2,823Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

Precious Snowflake #1

It feels good to get the ol' projector out again. It's been far too long. Hopefully now that I can bring a little color in more easily, I'll break out of the dry spell.

Personal endorsement for Canon printers:
I bought this little ip90 Canon inkjet what, 15 years ago? It's old enough that in Windows you have to go searching through the legacy printers. Mostly I wanted something that could do color, and 'portable' was a nice bonus.

Anyway, I haven't used the thing in several years, because every time I think about it, I figure that I'll need to buy new ink cartridges.

So, four-ish years, plug it in, find suitable drivers, and test page.

Next time, I think I need to use something other than the KitchenAid bowl :P

So, I got a proofing oven from my folks for Christmas. It's pretty sweet - you can let your dough rise in a moist environment and with a regulated temperature. I can see me baking more now, which is saying something.

Uh-oh. Someone left the door of the looney bin open...

Remember that whole hoopla with the cattle rancher who refused to leave BLM land even though his lease had expired? Yeah, those people.

So, I got a smartwatch for Christmas. Not this one per se, but the original turned out to be so much of a turd sandwich that I got permission to spend a few more bucks to get something that actually works.

Anyway, smartwatches. A couple of days in, and mine is neat. It's "early adopter" neat, though, where both you and the manufacturer are still trying to figure out what the hell to do with it. In that way, it kinda reminds me of my circa 2001 Handspring Visorphone http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/pda/visorp one/. There's a lot of there, there, but the largely unanswered question is "why?"

So, why? In my case, I figured it was time to get some sort of fitness trackery-thing, but if I'm going to put something on my wrist, I want it to do...stuff. And at their best, a smartwatch is going to have the same limitations as a FitBit - a doodad strapped to... more »

So, why? In my case, I figured it was time to get some sort of fitness trackery-thing, but if I'm going to put something on my wrist, I want it to do...stuff. And at their best, a smartwatch is going to have the same limitations as a FitBit - a doodad strapped to your wrist is only as good as how much you use that wrist, yanno? (Insert inappropriate joke here). And, they certainly do other stuff - notifications for stuff, timers, alarms, answers to questions, directions, handle your shopping lists, etc. Oh, and it tells time.

So why not? It's not a replacement for your phone by any means. And, it probably won't be for quite some time - until it's acceptable to have a Space Ghost sized gauntlet anyhow. Sure, you can make Dick Tracy calls with some of the newer stuff, but folks are going to put you in the glasshole category if you do. The main thing is that the screen is just too damn small. The voice stuff has so far been decent, but I also use Google Now a lot so it's already somewhat trained to my voice patterns. There's no getting around having a keyboard, currently, and that's been the case for 15 years.

Anyway, tl;dr: in general the smartwatch isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I wouldn't pay much outside the FitBit range of prices. So far I haven't come across anything that even has the potential of justifying paying more for a watch than than for a phone. I almost bought the Asus Zenwatch2, which at $150 is smack in the middle of that range, and except for the unfortunate bezel looks better than most of the fitness-type devices (IMO)

The LG Urbane? It looks like a watch, and feels like a watch. It has a fair amount of bling, but not as austantiously so as some folks say. If my wrist was much smaller it would be a bit too large , though. Definitely look at one on your wrist before you take it home.___

I think I know how we're going to toast in the New Year...
Mirabelle plum brandy. And when it's gone, I don't think I can get any more :(

(My German friends may appreciate this)

Why did the elephant seal cross the road?

Because it wanted to, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

+Alex Scrivener I don't know if you've tried this stuff, but it's quite nice. I tend to do my G&T's in a pint glass (same ratios) and two tsp to a jigger of gin + top with carbonated water gives a really nice tonic with a hint of bitters.

It's really starting to dig deep at me that I haven't been arting at all lately. Hopefully I can do something about that while I'm off work this week.

In the mean time, if you weren't on my Christmas card list, this was the cover this year.
