Lotus Carroll1,769,754This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) @104871116467578397659, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! Check it out here: http://goo.gl/3qH2vN She is also the contributor of our theme photo on this event. Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait with a "Sense of the Bizarre" theme. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Inspiration* Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/M7XTQ and ask away! We have categories for questions and discussion and are happy to help with anything. And make sure you read the tutorial linked above! *Prizes* 1 Year @118357019708110162087 Portfolio Account http://www.smugmug.com/features $150 Gift Certificate for @108289626026839048870  http://www.borrowlenses.com  @100266938567862344330 City Walker 10 http://goo.gl/7b2js9 @101789561086090624750 Gift Code in the amount of $43.95 http://www.capturingcouture.com *and* @100424993750772730018 T-Shirt Please circle these sponsors - we love their products and services and it's great that they support our learning and growing together. Having them circled is a requirement to be a winner. :) There will be 4 winners. 1st place winner selects choice of 4 prizes. 2nd place selects choice of 3 remaining prizes. 3rd place selects choice of 2 remaining prizes. 4th place receives the remaining prize. Winners must respond within 24 hours of being contacted or new winners will be chosen. At the end of the month, the Owners and Moderators of The Art of Self Portraiture Community will vote on the submissions and choose 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winners. Please note that this is subjective (art always is!) and so we'll be basing our votes purely on our own opinions. Everyone who enters a photo is already a winner, of course. :) *Please Remember These Rules:* *Enter Only Your Own Work *Enter Only ONE Photo *Only SELF PORTRAITS *Must adhere to this month's theme. *Photo Must Be Taken in March 2014 (EXIF data must reflect this) *Can Only Win Once Every 6 Months *Winners Must Respond Within 24 Hours of Contact *Circle Our Prize Sponsors *No Trickery or Spamming *We Reserve The Right To Remove Entries for Misconduct *Anything Outside Guidelines/Rules DiMarch Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense Of The Bizarre2014-03-30 07:00:00132

Megan McGuire2,737Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

A dear friend was talking about wandering around with photographers earlier, and it reminded me of the summary I wrote of every photowalk I'd been on up to that point.

#gplusphotowalk

Explaining a photowalk to a non-photographer:

Let me explain something about photowalks.  Three people will stop because something is "interesting" before even making it out of the parking lot.  Two make it out of the parking lot but dive into the bushes because they saw a bug.  Someone lies down in the middle of the path to get a rat's eye perspective of the grass  The original three catch up and one immediately gets enthralled by the rusty angst of a tin can.  The two in the bushes are still in the bushes, but moving sorta parallel to the path, at least, but aren't really paying attention because there's another of those bugs around somewhere, only with better lighting.  The one of three that didn't lie down starts taking interesting perspectives of the fence just to the other side.  A couple have moved on,ahead so they can be away from the people and shoot a couple of "quick" landscapes.  The grass shooter is now taking photos of the other photographers, both in situ and in profile. The bug people come crashing out of the bushes and start waving their LCD screens around wanting people to 'lookit'.  That one guy that magically disappeared the moment he got out of the car shows up with grass stains on his knees, but doesn't say anything.  The six stragglers go to catch up with the two taking landscapes and four of them make it.  No one knows what happened to the other two, including those two.

Now, we've made it 25 feet, and half an hour has passed.

Someone suggests food, so the remains of the group head in that direction which, fortunately, is also in the direction they'd intended to go in the first place.  Someone finds a culvert.  Two other people go to photograph it.   Oh, and there are frogs.  How awesome is that? Someone is going to get muddy feet.  Everyone else keeps wandering except someone else notices a pretty vista.  Everyone stops to photograph at once, but the non-landscape-y people get bored and start to straggle off, one by one, depending on how long it takes to pack up the tripod again.  Suddenly, cows.  The two hungry ones keep going towards nourishment, only stopping to take the odd leaf photo and maybe a rusty thing laying about.  Two people with muddy feet catch up to the landscape people, who are, fortunately, just packing up.  They make it a whole ten feet before one of them notices the barn partially obscured by trees.  When the approach it, there's already someone with muddy feet taking photographs of it.  Since it's unlocked, they all take photos of someone with LEDs.  Meanwhile, the advance team have found themselves some flowers, except that one guy who just wanders off to look around. Three people with muddy feet and one without catch up to the flower people....___A dear friend was talking about wandering around with photographers earlier, and it reminded me of the summary I wrote of every photowalk I'd been on up to that point.

I've got a funny sort of question:

Y'all may (or may not) know I maintain a food/recipe blog as sort of a labor of love, since making nommy foods is my second favorite hobby after photography.  I started it as a sort of on-line cookbook for myself, and other people seem to like it too, which does nothing but encourage me to do more.

Anyway,  *I'd like to add two things to it*:  First, make it easier for readers to find those more obscure food things, and second, recommend hardware that I really like - without the site becoming icky and commercialized.  The question is "how".

This website is not something I want to monetize or turn it into some sort of "thing".  I really like being able to add stuff as I'm inspired, without the need to constantly churn out stuff (though I'm at nearly 50 recipes!) and/or feel the need to haveother... more »

This website is not something I want to monetize or turn it into some sort of "thing".  I really like being able to add stuff as I'm inspired, without the need to constantly churn out stuff (though I'm at nearly 50 recipes!) and/or feel the need to have other people contribute for numbers or whatever.  It's something I like doing, and have a few kitchen skills and just enough tech skills that I can make it happen without breaking the bank doing it.

My thought is to provide the occasional hyperlink to the thing on Amazon.  Admittedly I'd get a cut for people following those links, but we're talking pennies.  The bigger picture it that it's very subtle and doesn't get in the way of actually using the website while providing sources for stuff.  Particularly this would be for the more obscure food items.  I put together a shopping list at the end of each recipe so that's pretty simple.

What I'm not sure about is hardware.  I'd love to say why I like a particular thing without it being too "review-y".  Hyperlinks like I would do for the food items doesn't really give me a way to say why, and adding why's to the recipe just gets in the way.  I've dabbled with review posts, but I think it gets in the way of the reason for the website - nommy foods.

So, do I just add hardware links where appropriate, or is there something I could do to add a little more info to that?

If you occasionally use my website I'd particularly like to hear your thoughts, but this is a general question.  And to keep it in context, this is about sharing info, not making money - I have a day job for that.

Late dinner again, but everyone seems to think it it was worth it.

My take on "Mozzarella in Carozza" (mozzarella in a basket) based on a one vline description I read earlier this week.

Basically, make a sammich with fresh mozzarella between two slices of a nice Italian bread (pugilese if you don't have something day - old), dunk it in egg batter and cook like French toast. Top with marinara and some more mozz and let it get gooey in the oven.

I'll share my secret sauce tomorrow :)

"In Italy, [a variation of] French toast is made by taking two slices of bread and embedded mozzarella in between them, then dipping the sandwich in whipped egg and frying in the typical French toast fashion. This version of French toast is then often topped with tomato sauce and cheese. Obviously this is not considered a breakfast food in Italy."

I shall report back, hopefully this weekend.

So it's the end of an era. Mom emailed me earlier wanting some help finding a new email provider. I figured it was because she doesn't email much outside work stuff and she's retiring next month. Turns out she and dad are wanting to finally migrate from Prodigy (yes Prodigy) but I guess dad doesn't actually want to say it.

My plan is to move them to one of my GApps accounts that's been grandfathered so long I could host the whole family, but I wouldn't mind some ideas other than setting up Thunderbird with both accounts and copying everything over.

+Google Apps Experts et al, any ideas?

This has come in and out of things for a number of years and I've never been quite able to put my finger on it.

The big thing is the combination of guitar and symphonics. I mean, the riff is good but the rolls in and out of the background music make it something other that what would have been a fluff piece.  It gives it a depth and breadth that reminds me of A Dark Side of the Moon in some ways.  I'd love to hear a version with Alan Parsons at the controls (sound editor on Dark Side and generally one of my favorite musical artists) because the wow factor would go to eleven.

It's kinda late, but I really want to throw this out there before I forget.

I know people, and you probably know people, where sex isn't a big deal.  For a small (approximated) amount of the population it isn't a deal at all.  And that's okay.  We all have different sexual needs - I mean how many conversations have you had regarding "my partner's sex drive is higher/lower than mine" with your close friends.

Some people have little or no sex drive at all.  They may love the intimacy, or they may only be interested if there's a serious emotional attachment, or they may just not feel anything at all except for that rare "hubba hubba stamp stamp noooww" thing.

I'll be frank here - I have historically had little or no interest in sex outside a relationship.  It's not because of any religious or philosophical thing, it'sjust... more »

I'll be frank here - I have historically had little or no interest in sex outside a relationship.  It's not because of any religious or philosophical thing, it's just how I am.  Even in a relationship...well, it's not a priority like it is for some people.

But, I don't define myself in the asexual category, but I can see where they're coming from. It's not unnatural, it's not a psychological problem, just some people have different sex drives.  It's probably (IMO) more common than being gay/lbgt since it's a more universal condition and it's considered a shameful thing by anyone who's sexually active and thinks that is "normal".

Just food for thought.

Something reminded me earlier that I haven't mentioned the "Chronic Health Journal" in quite some time.

What it is:  A daily journal to log symptoms, diet, sleep, exercise,  meds, quality of life, etc. to share with your doctor.  It was developed by me with the help of +kat Folland (a fibromyalgia sufferer) based on her ideas, and with input from several awesome Plussers.  I think it's broad enough to cover a lot of chronic issues, including my own mental health problems.

On a related note, if you have one, I would really appreciate an honest Amazon review.  Positive (especially) feedback helps in search rankings enormously.

My printer is giving me a deal, so I'm going to double-down on it.

Between now and the end of the month, I'm offering 50% off any ready-to-hang thinwrap canvas.  As an example, a 16x20 canvas of this photo is $50 for an 8x10" or $90 for a 16x20"  Normally I'd say different aspect ratios may vary, but I think I'll hold these prices to the nearest equivalent.

Because of the nature of this sale, please contact me directly here or at olav@squareheadphotography.com so we can arrange payment and shipping.

Or, standard prints are also available, starting around $30

/pardon the advert please.  I hate doing it, but if I don't, no one seems to notice :(

--edit; overseas shipping is always available

Woohoo.  Actually got something done today.

The old fluorescent fixture was pretty comely looking and the ballast was dying (i.e., the light didn't come on 50% of the time.  New fixture is LED goodness, brighter, less energy, and  doesn't flicker.

Ain't my life exciting?

Next up, replacing the batteries in one of my UPSes

I'll plug this again, but between now and June 4th, stop by and post your best.  There are even prizes and stuff, and you also retain all the rights to your photos unlike some contests.  I'll warn you, I'm a pretty harsh and impartial judge though.  But, it you make it to the finals I'll also give an honest critique.

Oh, and I'm supposed to say that if you've been thinking about becoming a ViewBug member, this sends me a bit of love http://www.viewbug.com/contests/joinF055.  I really want to see all the awesome photos though.

Many, many years ago, when I was a teenager we acquired a retired church organ, which I tried to use to up my meager skills to it's level.  I could do okay so long as I didn't try to use the foot pedals too much.

This one though, it fascinated (and still does) me because it's so terribly intricate - and worse, I found out that my hands are about three inches too short to properly do Bach.

It's called a "Little Harmonic Labyrinth" because it's oh so wonderfully sonorous, but more importantly about four measures in, you realize that you're lost, and hopelessly outclassed by the chord progressions.

Wow. Speaking of bar bands, +Big Bad Voodoo Daddy used to play at Nicholby's in Ventura, CA (one of my favorite haunts back when) and they're still playing too.  Time to play some catch-up with my disc collection :D

If you like a good modern swing, they're definitely worth a listen.

You might have actually heard these guys.  They were half-time at the Super Bowl once.  I think it was Miami whenever the last one there was.

+Julia Robertson I promised you a "Thing" and here it is :)

The photo is a 3D rendering of my bum foot, interpreted from the MRI data in the DOCIM format the hospital has to give if it's asked for, as rendered on my laptop.  I can spin it around, and apply different filters based on what I want to look at (this here is the default "bone" mask, I suspect without research the red areas are calcification - read. arthritis - as those seem to coincide with the areas that give me pain).
You can download the open-source software here - http://svn.softwarepublico.gov.br/trac/invesalius/wiki/InVesalius/Download

I came across this the other week, and it's one of the coolest things I've seen in a while.

The gist is, couple finds out wife has a tumor behind her eye.
Guy starts dicking around with the imaging data.
2nd MRI shows the tumor's grown dramatically.  Guy compares image data and finds...not so much.  Still not great tho.
Couple decide that since it's not so urgent, they'd like to find an alternative to cutting her head open and squishing her brain around.
Guy creates 3D model of his wife's head based on the MRI data and shops it around.
Couple finds doc that thinks microsurgery might be do-able.
Guy prints 3D model of the front of wife's head so surgeon can perfect the technique

Way awesome.

Yet another project that'll go nowhere until I have the time (and mostly the money). Sigh.  I've only got two up, and I'm hoping the pill box design I did is still on my work PC.  Perhaps once I get the printer at work running again I'll be able to slip in a job here and there.

I've got to take a minute or two to talk about Project365, 52, etc.

IMO, they're evil.  They will suck the soul out of you, and leave you dry, and here's why:

You start a Project365, which means you have to take a photo, every day, for 365 days.  No matter what.

You've immediately shamed yourself into posting schlock, because you have to take/post a photo. Every day, no matter what.  You can never rely on actual creativity, so you try and force it.

You can't force creativity.  You just can't.  It's either there, or it isn't.  To make things worse, if you miss a day, you automatically lose - no matter the reason.

So, you start phoning things in just for numbers.  And, you start to hate the things you post because of it - in some ways rightfully so, because they're not photos you'd ever post, or even take,otherwi... more »

So, you start phoning things in just for numbers.  And, you start to hate the things you post because of it - in some ways rightfully so, because they're not photos you'd ever post, or even take, otherwise.

You're not growing, you're just shooting more/posting more.  365 is the opposite of what it's supposed to be because it means volume, not quality.

Personal story - I used to do a 52 project of sorts.  A website I used to hang out on had a photo "contest" a week, where each week had a theme that was elected by the community that participated.  So, we'd get contests like "weather".  Now, I don't know if you know the weather around Sacramento, but we have "sunny and hot", "sunny and cold", "gray", "gray and cold" and once in a while "gray and wet" (oh, and uninteresting fog).  Could I compete with some guy that's out in a pickup chasing tornadoes in OK?  Hell no.  There isn't even someplace within driving distance where I could get interesting weather.  So, I would just post some crap because I should post some crap.  It really started to get to me and thankfully I wandered off to do my own things before it killed the creative spirit, because it really was doing exactly that.

Want a real challenge?  Whether or not you take a photo every day, think about photography, let your mind imagine things, and when imagination and feasibility intersect make the photo.  Even if that takes you a week, three weeks, whatever.  Make your thing the best thing you can do, and be proud of that.  Sure, you'll make mistakes.  Nearly every photo has mistakes.  Where the magic comes in is that you're pushing your envelope, and hopefully you're learning from those mistakes so the next time you pick up the camera, you've gained something.  But either way, be proud of every photo you post, regardless of the flaws.  Photography is like painting.  It grows and moves and changes as your life grows and moves and changes.  If you pay attention your skills grow with every movement as well.

Honestly, taking a photo every day will not do that.  "Phoning one in" every day does nothing more than making you hate what you once loved.___

Oy.  I haven't introduced myself in forever.  I'm kind of on a hiatus right now for various personal reasons, but  I like to do lots of different kinds of photography, but a lot of the time I like to create things with my opaque projector.  Oh, and gas masks.  I bring them out every now and then too.

In the mean time, check out my galleries on Smugmug.  Please do note that some images are kinda-sort NSFW though.  But not so much that I (and a bunch of people that have bought my prints) don't mind family and friends seeing them hung on the wall.
