Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321214692CC G+

Pix and video of the Blood Moon lunar eclipse!

During last night's beautiful lunar eclipse I took video, describing what was going on. Making this was a lot of fun (if cold!).

No, the asteroid 2003 QQ47 will not hit Earth next week. Sigh.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2014/03/15/asteroid_2003_qq47_rumors_of_an_impact_in_march_2014_are_false.html

Cripes, these things keep popping up. The rumors are wrong, we've known for over a decade that QQ47 won't hit us for at least a century, and it's disgusting that some media are playing this up like it's real (and current) news.

You're orbiting Venus in your spaceship. As you circle the hellish planet below, there comes a moment when the Sun is shining from directly behind you, and you're looking down the length of your spaceship's shadow. What do you see?

This.

It's too early to say for sure, but Arctic sea ice extent is already way below average. And no matter how you look at it, the denier claims of "recovery" since 2012 are bull.

I really enjoyed watching "Cosmos" last night, and it made me think quite a bit about religion and freedom of thought. I put some of this down in my review of the show, but I have more thinking to do about it, too. Congratulations to my friends Neil Tyson and Ann Druyan for this wonderful production.

Monster sunspot turns its baleful eye toward Earth

A huge sunspot is marring the face of the Sun today, and using my own camera and a solar filter I rigged up, I got a fairly decent shot of it!

The Best of Bad Astronomy in 2013

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/12/31/_2013_the_best_of_bad_astronomy.html

I don't usually do this, but thought it might be fun to give it a shot: These are the five articles I wrote from the past year that I think best represent what I do. They may not be the biggest stories, or the prettiest pictures (I do that here: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/bad_astronomy/2013/12/the_universe_in_pictures_the_best_space_photos_of_2013.single.html), but to me they are where my voice is best heard. The most terrifying landslide video I've ever seen

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/12/18/landslide_astonishing_video_of_malaysian_tin_mine_collapse.html

I'm not kidding here: This is nightmare fuel. In 1993 a tin mine near the coast in Malayasia collapsed... and kept collapsing, and kept collapsing. Finally, a wall of sea water rushes in, and it's simply apocalyptic. The video is low res, but that hardly matters. <shudder>

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/12/10/juno_spacecraft_video_of_the_earth_and_moon.html

This is so cool: the Juno spacecraft is on its way to Jupiter, and stole some energy from Earth to get there. As it swept past us 100x faster than a rifle bullet, it took images of our planet and the Moon that were put together to make the video.

Astronomers find a planet where our theories say there shouldn't be one... and they get a photo of it, too!

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/12/09/exoplanet_direct_photo_of_a_planet_challenges_formation_theories.html

HD 1060906 b is a whopping 100 billion km away from its star, way farther than we think planets of its mass can form. Either it formed farther in and got tossed out by another planet (which is unlikely), or it formed where it is and our ideas of how planets and stars form need some revision. Either way, this is one of the rare exoplanets where we have a direct photograph of it!

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/12/02/when_stars_collide_the_enigmatic_beauty_of_v838_mon.html

The red star in the center of this weird cloud of dust may be the result of two stars physically colliding and merging, and in 2002 briefly shone with the power of a million Suns. It lit up the dust around it, illuminating this gorgeous and intricate structure. This Hubble image was remastered by Roberto Colombari, and I have the details in the link above.

Join #NASA as we follow the journey of Comet ISON as it slingshots around the sun.

Will the awesome gravity and energy of the sun break up this cosmic ball of ice and rock? Will it break up? Or will it pass the sun intact to put on a dazzling show in the December sky?

Watch as NASA solar physicists track the comet LIVE from the mission control for NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory,@NASA_SDO, during #ISON’s closest approach to the sun.

We'll also be joined by comet scientists joining from Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona, where the solar telescope will be observing ISON and by science writer Phil Plait.

NASA scientists will answer your questions LIVE on air here on Google+, in the YouTube comments section during the live broadcast, or via Twitter using #ISON and#askNAS... more »

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/11/06/chelyabinsk_asteroid_impact_small_rocks_may_hit_us_more_often_than_thought.html

New studies released today find that we may get hit by 10 - 50 meter diameter space rocks more often than we once thought. This isn't a panic-inducing announcement (or, more accurately, you shouldn't be panicking about it) but it does underscore how seriously we need to take this threat.

Astronews: 1 in 5 stars like the Sun may have Earth-like planets!

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/11/04/earth_like_exoplanets_planets_like_ours_may_be_very_common.html

A new study, going over tens of thousands of stars viewed by the Kepler spacecraft, indicates that 22% of stars like the Sun should have planets like Earth orbiting them — planets that are similar in size to our home world and with a surface temperature hospitable for liquid water.

To be sure, there are a few caveats with this, but their method and numbers look pretty good to me. Even if they're off by a factor of 10 (which is unlikely) that still means there are billions of planets similar to our own in the galaxy alone.

Don't be fooled by fake eclipse pictures!

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2012/05/22/a_fake_and_a_real_view_of_the_solar_eclipse_from_space.html

This morning there was a solar eclipse visible to some of the world, and many pictures are being posted on various social media. But I keep seeing one (pictured here) that's actually not real; it's a drawing. Perhaps it's not that big a deal, but I'd prefer a world where we share the reality of such events, and not spread misinformation. It's easy to be fooled, so it's always a good idea to check Google images and do a reverse image search to be sure you've got the real deal.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/10/30/exoplanet_kepler_78b_a_molten_earth_sized_earth_mass_planet.html

Astronomers have found that the exoplanet Kepler-78b, 700 light years away, has almost the same size, mass, and density as Earth. This means it's a rocky-metal planet as well! But it's so close to its star that the surface will be completely molten. You can't have everything.
