Each segment will be released after the event as a stand-alone YouTube video on the AstrosphereVids channel, thus creating a library of content while raising money for future programs.  Planning for this Hangout-a-thon was triggered by the cuts created by sequestration, and by the current White House plans to transition education out of NASA. If the President's current budget is passed, all the funding programs CosmoQuest relies on for will be zeroed (see http://bit.ly/11m5XYg) and the project will be defunded. Rather than accept that fate, CosmoQuest is working to raise the funds needed to keep their programs going, to build new citizen science programs for researchers that don't otherwise have the means to accomplish their projects, and to contract, as they are able, extraordinary people laid off by these cuts at other institutions to keep doing great things through CosmoQuest. (Links to essays on these cuts are listed below).   CosmoQuest wants to make sure astronomy education survives and remains strong. While one team, and one telethon can't fix everything, they hope this event can raise awareness, while protected one small corner of astronomy research and education. #hangoutathon  The CosmoQuest 24 Hour Hangout-A-Thon - Main Event Page2013-06-15 18:00:00317

CosmoQuest42,918*UPDATE*: Greetings from Austin, everyone! I'm afraid we won't be able to run our usual Weekly Space Hangout this week. The crowd for SXSW is HUGE and we just won't be able to find a semi-quiet spot with awesome internet to broadcast from. In addition, many of our space journalists who are not at SXSW are otherwise occupied this week.  HOWEVER! We are taking photos and video to share with you all in real time as we can on Google Plus and for post-production. Our team on the ground is: @110701307803962595019, @109036978092446954908, @109479143173251353583, @117494594159696687799, and +Kortney Hogan. We'll share from the +CosmoQuest page all the fun as well. ALSO, @109479143173251353583 and @111723545767173542935 are planning some live Hangout events as space, time, and bandwidth are available. Though we won't have the usual weekly news round-up, they will be sharing the NASA SXSW experience with you all. Follow both of them for updates! See you next week at our usual time and place.  #WSHSXSW   #HangoutsOnAir   #SpaceHangout   #SpaceHangoutSXSW  Weekly Space Hangout -- SXSW Edition - CANCELLED2013-03-08 13:00:0039

NASA2,516,715Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008326

Apparently this is what happens when you mix toothpaste potassium iodide, dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide? Can any chemistry folks confirm/deny?

Update: This is known as "Elephant Toothpaste" in chemistry circles.  http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistrydemonstrations/a/elephanttooth.htm

+Levar Burton just launched a #kickstarter  campaign to relaunch #readingrainbow  on the web.  Pretty much anyone under the age of 35-40 has fond memories of Reading Rainbow, so I expect this kickstarter to be WILDLY successful.

But don't take MY word for it, check out the link below. ;-)

Comets, Asteroids, and Meteor Showers, oh, my!

Lately I've been asked "how do you discover asteroids and comets?"

The process is rather simple, and made easier through the use of digital imaging and computer processing.  My group takes several images in an area of the sky, and then we overlay the images, using the background stars as a guide.

Anything that is moving against the background stars in certain directions and velocities is flagged by our system as a potential object. The software isn't 100% accurate, which is where us astronomers come in. We review these images real-time and sort out what's real from what's not.

Speaking of meteors, asteroids, and comets, there might be a new meteor shower this saturday morning. - Look due north just after midnight local time. We might be in for a treat!

The XKCD Guide to Meteor Showers

Since the #perseids  Meteor Shower is this weekend, I thought sharing this handy guide from www.xkcd.com would be fitting.

If you want to catch the Perseids, find a nice quiet (and dark) site, away from city lights. Bring some comfortable lawn chairs. If you can, use lawn/camping chairs that can lay flat, or nearly flat.

Best viewing is after midnight local time, and you'll want to look to the north-east if you want to see the meteors originating from the "radiant" of Perseus.  That being said, try to have as much sky visible as possible, since meteors can appear from most every direction during a meteor shower.

If you want to being a telescope or binoculars, you can view the milky way overhead, however you may want to just leave your gear at home and just enjoy the meteor shower.

You can expect anywhere from 40 to over 100 meteors per hour during the peak of a Meteor shower. Be patient, relax, and enjoy time away from the computer.  I've found the more relaxed and calm you are, the more meteors become visible.

Most importantly, keep looking up!

Fun Fact Over 100 tons of material from space burns up in our atmosphere each day!

As a costumer (and cubs fan) , this has always pissed me off.  You see fans at sports games, painted up, wearing costumes, jerseys, etc.

Yet, the same people who do that more or less openly mock costumers at sci-fi conventions.  So dressing up like a purple viking at a football game is "cool" but dressing up like Thor isn't?

A while back, TSA stopped Star Wars Actor Peter Mayhew because his cane is styled like a lightsaber.

Eventually TSA allowed Mayhew to board the plane with his cane. You can read more about Mayhew's brief run-in with TSA at the link below.

I'm pretty sure a couple of the images I took of the #internationalspacestation  were distorted from not using a telescope.

Here's a quick edit of one of them, in an attempt to "fix" it.

Okay folks, here it is! After last night's attempt to take video of the #internationalspacestation  was a dismal failure due to severe overexposure, I set out tonight to get some still images.

These were done with my 80mm diameter/400mm focal length refractor telescope connected to my Canon T1i DSLR.  1/100 sec exposure at ISO200.

This is a collage of five images, while I can't say these are the best images, they certainly are the most interesting out of the set.

1973 Plymouth Duster

My first car was a 1973 Plymouth Duster.  I got it for free from my friend's dad - he had several non-working cars in his backyard, and a nasty-gram from the city.

Since the car had sat under the Arizona sun for close to ten years, I had to replace every hose, gasket, belt, bushing, and really any piece of rubber on the entire car. The radiator, water pump, brakes and clutch were shot too. Luckily I'd been working on cars since I was old enough to turn a wrench.

My Duster wasn't particularly sexy, but with it's 318 c.i V-8 and "three on the tree" manual transmission, it really hauled ass. With bench seats in the front and rear, we could fit about 8 people in the car, which made me really popular in high school when the drive-in theater charged by the car load instead of per person.  The very spacious trunk couldhold... more »

The very spacious trunk could hold quite a few coolers and inner tubes, so trips to the local lakes, and tubing on the Salt River were frequent excursions (often during class).

I had set out to do a complete restoration on the car after I graduated high school, but a $10/hr part-time PC tech job didn't really begin to fund such a restoration. So, I wound up selling the car to a collector.  To be honest, I regret selling it, and have been trying to find a "running" Duster for a while now.

They say you never forget your first love...

Whoever came up with the phrase "a snowball's chance in hell" needs to visit Arizona today - specifically sunny Tucson.

Wonder what it would look like if #2012da14  hit the Earth?

Look no further than Meteor Crater, in Northern Arizona!

Estimates place the size of the object that hit about 50,000 years ago at around 50 meters - roughly the same size as 2012DA14. The crater is over a kilometer wide, and about half a kilometer deep.

I love a thin crescent moon.
Specifically, I enjoy seeing the dim disk of Earthshine, and spectacular shadows that are visible in a telescope.

Look to the west, and you might see what I'm talking about.

What's your favorite lunar phase, and why?

Motivational thought for the day:

+Marvel Entertainment figurehead +Stan Lee is 90 years old.
Stan co-created the Spider-Man comic when he was 40 years old.

As a "non-traditional" college student approaching 40, this inspires me greatly.

On a side note, Stan is one of the classiest gentlemen I've ever had the privilege of meeting.

Excelsior!

If you have clear skies tonight, you should go outside and take a look at the moon. Jupiter is VERY near by.

Tonight's +Virtual Star Party is starting in a few!   I'll be popping in shortly for some quick views from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope.

Join us! #sciencesunday   #scienceeveryday

It's time for another Virtual Star Party. Join +Fraser Cain and a team of astronomers as they explore the night sky with telescopes streaming into a live Google+ Hangout. We should be able to see Jupiter, maybe a thin sliver of the Moon, if we're lucky, and a whole range of wonderful deep sky objects.

We'll even take requests. :-)

Here's a link to last week's star party if you're wondering what it's all about.
Virtual Star Party - Jan 6, 2013: One Year Anniversary Edition

This explainer video will be replaced with the live video when we're about to start. Also, remember that the start time can be a little rough, it's tough to get everything lined up perfectly to start at 6 PST sharp.___Tonight's +Virtual Star Party is starting in a few!   I'll be popping in shortly for some quick views from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope.

The weather is looking good for me to join tonight's +Virtual Star Party with +Fraser Cain , +Scott Lewis, +Thad Szabo and +Pamela Gay

I'll be sharing some quick views from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope.  Should be able to drop in for about 15-20 minutes.

Have to make up for lost time since we had to shut down early last night on account of extreme cold.
