What scam is this?   I have been advertising and making business posts on Craigslist, and I actually do at least occasionally get some decent prospects there.  Goodness though - do I attract lots of scammers.

This one is fairly common.  They want someone with a printer to print checks and mail things for them.  I assume they are doing this, because whatever criminal activity they are engaged in, these "fronts' will be the evidence trail - they are doing the most risky part of the crime.

But what is the crime?   What will these checks be used for?  I am tempted to troll back to find out, but I really don't have time for adventures like that right now.

Seeking Small Business Service Providers (San Diego)

Hey San Diego Folks,

Here is an ad I posted on Craigslist a few weeks ago.  I would have posted it here first, but I didn't know this group existed, even though I am fairly active on Google+.  As I described here, I have gotten sick of working alone out of my little studio apartment in Pacific Beach, so am looking for other small business services providers for possible cooperative ventures.   I have a handful of people interested so far - not a lot, but enough to get started.    Please read the post below, and if it looks like something that might interest you let me know and I will get you more information.

----------------
RFI for Professional Services Cooperative

ATTN: Tech &Business Writers, Web/Internet/IT specialists, Project Management/Planning, Systems Analysis + Development, Small Business Development & Consulting professionals.

I have gotten a little tired of working alone, so I have been making plans for what I call a "professional services cooperative" and would like to find some local people to work with. The idea is pretty simple - we would work with a common CRM (customer relationship management) system, and a common compensation structure which includes incentives for finding new clients, the marketing effort needed to secure those clients and the engagement fee for the work itself. I have "borrowed" the incentive plan from a consulting group I worked with years ago, because I think it is super equitable. (They won't let me publish the link where I posted this, but if you respond I will send it to you - it is transparent and public).

In addition, I would like to meet or conference frequently - weekly at least to discuss possible clients and issues with active clients, along with general plans and strategies and other ways we can support each other. I am sure we have all been in the situation where we need just a bit of help with one of our client projects or where we could possible get a new client with a slightly different skill set. I am totally convinced that many of us could be far more successful if we found more effective ways to work together. Eventually , I would like to form a small business advisory for entrepreneurs and startups, but I need to find good people to work with so this is the first step.

I am currently looking for self-employed small business service providers of all stripes. I provide services related to project management. business/technical writing and systems analysis - so skills similar to mine are welcome, but so are skills in different areas of small business support. These services are offered remotely, and I have a small but international client base. I would like to find some local partners though because I think it would be of value to meet face to face.

I am currently working out of my studio apartment in Pacific Beach and would really like to meet some of my self employed neighbors, so feel free to contact me even if you are not sure if this proposed cooperative is for you. This is not a paid position, but it is absolutely not a scam(no upfront fees or anything like that). I am not looking for a ton of people, and think this could work with as few as for or five. I will respond to all inquires. Thanks for reading this, and I hope to hear from you soon.

UPDATE: I posted this a few weeks ago and got about a half dozen responses - not a ton of people, but all were highly qualified. If you were one of the people who responded, you don't need to respond again - I will be sending out an email with more information shortly. If you are interested and have not responded, please be sure to include your email, phone number and a convenient time to reach you- and also a link to your website or the social media profile you use to promote yourself.

I have also realized from talking to a few folks that many of the self-employed people in San Diego seem somewhat frustrated with the kind of networking opportunities available here, and I have a few idea on how that can be addressed. For that reason, feel free to respond if you are self employed, even if you do not currently provide small business services. ___

Seeking Moderation Help with the Community

Hi Entrepreneurs,  We have been a little short handed in moderating this community so are looking for one or more additional moderators to help us out.

Most of the work is routine and not terribly exciting.   The spam folder needs to be emptied everyday and the "false positives" that Google has incorrectly flagged as spam need to be approved.   Low quality posts (lots of them) need to be removed also on a daily basis, and new member request need to be reviewed and approved.

More importantly, moderators need to do what they can to encourage positive contributions and lead discussions.  This can include "elucidating" points that have been made and helping members create higher quality posts.  In addition, and ideas on "community development" here are welcome, given the tools at our disposal.

The level of effort we are requesting is no less than one "moderation session" every other day.   When you are busy, this can be as minimal as a quick review and removing the worst of the spam and low quality posts.   When you have more time, this can include reading the articles that have been posted here, and adding comments or questions to encourage discussions.

Like I said, it is not terribly exciting, but you do get to learn more about how other entrepreneurs think, what they are up to, and what works, and what doesn't in an online community like this.   It is a plus if you are a small business advisor or have an active practice involved with small business development development of any kind.    Please let us know if you are interested by sending a private post or message to me, or either of the other moderators +Rebecca Quinn or +Aleta Curry ___

American politics has become a freak show.   I am not sure I can take it anymore - the trolls have won.   I am sick of having my attention hijacked by idiots, and am going to do my best to stay out of it - especially on social media.

An intelligent policy discussion on Google+ or Facebook? - get real.   I am sure I will fail now and then - and not be able to resist jumping in and throwing the occasional punch, but when it is all over think of how much time I will have saved by staying out of it.   It is absurd to think my opinion will have changed anything in the slightest.

Yes, I heard a politician screeching on the radio shortly after I woke up, and that is not how I want to be starting my day.  I am going on a "low information diet". .

Hope you don't mind a brief commercial interruption, but I just posted this on Craigslist, and on my own entrepreneurs community.   Let me know if you or any of your associates need any help - you won't be disappointed.

SPECIAL OFFER:  Project planning, organizing & scheduling.

It's that time again - for one of my special offers.   I just posted this one on Craigslist, and this time the emphasis is a bit different.   Before, I made a general offer for "professional services" - which included things like business and technical writing and systems analysis.  I will still do those things with this offer, but this time I am concentrating on project management and planning, because I think I am really good at it, and have always been interested in venture acceleration.

Let me know if you need any help and would like to give this a shot.   I was tempted to eke up my rate a bit - in some ways this offer is a little too good, but I have had such good luck with this, I have decided to stick with it for now.     The level of effort I have found works well for small business is about two hours a week for five or six weeks, but this can be adjusted to fit your needs.   What you will get for this is me working in your interest and I can pretty much guarantee you won't be disappointed.

**
Experienced project and program manager with over 20 years experience would like to help accelerate your business, project or venture. While I welcome inquiries from any sized organization, I have put together an affordable offer for small business and early stage startups that allow you to secure these services without a long term commitment:   Activities can include, but are not limited to:

* Review existing plans and documentation
* Organize and prioritize project activities
* Produce project schedules and resource plans
* Produce or improve project documentation.
* Integrate planning and productivity systems
* Coordinate remote team activities
* Conduct project status reviews

These activities, customized to your exact needs, will leave your project or venture in a much better place than when you started. They will provide a detailed action plan and recommendations for high impact activities that will propel your project towards successful completion.

I am good at this - I have experience in almost every industry including software, financial services, biotechnology, infrastructure development and manufacturing. During the dot com boom, he managed a team of 20 project managers for a Silicon Valley contracting firm and have had extended overseas assignments for Royal Dutch Shell in West Africa and the U.S. Agency for International Development project in Egypt. In recent years, however, I have developed a strong interest in small business ventures and startups, and have learned much about their special needs and ways to foster their growth.

To learn more about my background, please see my Linkedin profile at the link below and call or write if you would like to discuss your specific needs or situation. I know full well that every business is different and unique and "one size does not fit all". Perhaps you thought you couldn't afford professional project management services - think again, and see the super affordable offer I have included with this post. If that doesn't work let me know - I'm sure we can structure a win-win deal.

There is NEVER a charge for initial consultation and if I can't help you, chance are I know someone who can. Let's talk today - if you want, we can get started right way.

What would you do with 1.5 billion dollars?.     Hi Entrepreneurs.   I have always been somewhat politically opposed to the concept of state-run lotteries- or at least what they have become in modern American society.

Decades ago when I was in college in Michigan when the first lotteries were just getting going they were fun.   The payouts were great, and there were lots of small prizes.  It seems like you would always hear about a friend who won $20 or $50 bucks - and occasionally more, and often a roommate who had gone to the liquor store would come back with two 12 packs after winning one of these small prizes.  The top award back then I think was a million bucks - enough to change anyone's life.

That is not the way they work now, however, and the latest absurd Powerball prize - as I am sure everyone knows, is 1.5 billion dollars.   That is absolutely  ridiculous - I have heard the odds of winning are the same as getting struck by lighting, and drowning at the same time! .   It has fostered a "gambling mentality" in our society I think we could do without, and may even be harming us.

I didn't post to make a political rant though - like everyone it is impossible not to think about at least a little, which is why long lines will be forming to buy these tickets, even though we know about the astronomically long odds.   So lets think about it - maybe it will reveal something about ourselves that we didn't know.   Suppose tonight you go to bed as your normal self -with all your problems, struggles and concerns.

First thing in the morning, however, you hear knocking and some kind of commotion outside your front door.  You open it and find a crowd of reporters and camera crews.  They tell you that you have just won 1.5 billion dollars, and want to know what you will do with it - a dozen microphones have been thrust in you face.   Suddenly, you one of the richest people on earth.  What do you tell them?

What would you do if tomorrow, you won 1.5 billion dollars?  ___

Cubicle Nightmare.   Another ultra-weird dream.   I arrived at the business by elevator, as always seems to happen in my dreams, to deliver a proposal to some corporate customer.   I knew that my proposal was mediocre at best, and even had a few serious errors I was hoping they wouldn't catch.

The business was on a floor crowded with cubicles and workstations, but had open space on the outside around the walls that was relatively uncrowded.   Inside the cubicle area, however, things were bustling - people - employees I guess, were running around talking, exchanging papers - and seemed to be conducting some kind of commerce.   It reminded me more of a third world bazaar rather than a business.

I found my business contact - one of the guys in charge, in an outer cubicle.   He was a short man of Asian-Indian descent and waved me to him while he was talking on the phone.   He took my proposal but lifted his head to say he was too busy to talk - "just walk around for 10 minutes or so and come back" he said.    This seemed a bit strange, but what else could I do?  I walked around the outside corridor, but didn't go into into the cubicle area, which seemed totally crazy.

After about 10 minutes I went back to my business contact, but he was still on the phone.    Again, holding the receiver, he lifted his head and said, "I gave your  proposal to the China desk - go talk to them".   I was confused - my proposal had nothing to do with China, and why was there a "China desk" here anyway?   I tried to get him to explain "Did you get a chance to look at it?" " I asked.    "Just go", he said impatiently, "it's over there" pointing inward to the cubicle area.   "But..." I tried to interject.  "Just go", he said, "go, go, go" - waving his finger in the direction I should walk, apparently annoyed that I had taken so much of his time.

I was naturally a little put off by this introduction, but decided to play my hand.   I waded into the cubicle area which was really more like a ramshackle village - different sizes and shapes of enclosures with busy looking people walking quickly between them.

Finally, I made it to the "China Desk" and greeted the woman sitting behind it.   "Ah, we have been expecting you" she said while looking down at my proposal.   "Here, take a look, tell us what you think", she said, pushing the proposal to me.   I opened it and saw that it had been filled with elaborate and colorful artwork - apparently drawn by hand,  and Chinese characters were linked by arrows to text I had written - was this a translation of what I had written? - or comments? - I did not know.

I had no idea what to make of all this.  The proposal I wrote wasn't even all that good - why was it getting all this attention?   Had there been some kind of misunderstanding?   "Does it meet with your approval" the Chinese woman asked meekly.   "It's not bad" I said in an authoritative voice that was not my own, "but send it to the Africa desk, and have them take a look".

Where the hell did that come from?   Why did I say that?   Why would I even think there was an "Africa desk" and if so, why was I having them review my proposal - it also had nothing to do with Africa.  "Yes sir, I will take care of it right away" she said, "Will there be anything else"?.   "No - thank you", I said as I turned to leave.

As I made my way back to the outer area, I noticed the cubicles seemed to have grown taller.  They were all different colors that didn't match, and many were now slanted at weird angles - plus the place seemed even more busy and crowded - even a little frantic.  People in the cubicle area were bumping into each other more often and some seemed to be getting into arguments.   I finally made my way back to outer corridor are to regroup and find my business contact to figure out what the hell was going on.

I didn't find him, but was directed upstairs, and took an elevator to another part of the company.  This was a large room with big tables - like those used for fabric cutting, and there was a small team of people at each table.  In other parts of the room, people were busy working on white boards and discussing something.

I got closer to one of the tables to get a look at what they were doing.   With alarm, I realized that they were working on my proposal.   Each table had been given an individual page, and the workers were cutting out each sentence I had written and pasting it on a separate sheet - and these were then being passed for further analysis by the people working on the white boards.

This was just too much - my proposal wasn't for a big job - and it wasn't even all that good - what in the world were these people doing?   Finding myself on the main floor again, I finally found my original business contact, but he was walking by be quickly in the opposite direction.  I stopped to confront him, and he apparently did know what was going on.

"Ha Ha - I guess we have to give you a job now" he said.   "OK" I said, "what do I do?" - for some reason not  considering whether I even wanted to work in such an insane place.   "I don't know", my contact said as he quickly walked past and turned into the cubicle thicket. "Please go figure it out".   ___

Some interesting insights on remote work, from +Michael Maguire

The Unanticipated Collateral Damage of Remote Work

"In a study of a Fortune 100 company in Silicon Valley that freely allowed off-site work, researchers found that the employees who chose to continue working in the office ended up feeling lonely and disconnected" - Phyllis Korkki: The New York Times http://goo.gl/bXyzaA

In a post to the Cloud Computing for Business community I made recently I suggested that cloud computing provides useful tools for team building, but wondered if they could supplant the value of being in the office on a regular basis. https://goo.gl/kxzxwt

What I hadn't considered in my discussion was the collateral damage of remote work - those left behind. Office bound team members, abandoned by their departed remote colleagues, are deprived of the camaraderie they all once enjoyed, making the office a less stimulating environment.

Remote workers and those that remain at the office have fewer opportunities to feel good - a feeling that, by transference, is associated with their work. Where does this feeling of feeling good come from?

There's a reason we're happy to see our friends. Our bodies release endorphins that make us feel good. Sharing a laugh, even indulging in gossip results in the same release. For more on this see "Why Laughter may be the best... medicine" by Jennifer Welsh in Scientific American http://goo.gl/JByfU1

Why is this significant for team building and bottom line results?

The endorphin release of team association is the foundation of team building. Deprived of regularly getting together a team risks losing its cohesion. Members cease to have each others backs, operating more in isolation - synergy is lost.

Even if we could, returning to the office isn't the way to safeguard our teams. What we need to do is be aware of the importance of being together on a regular basis. I don't think we need to return to the company picnic, adventure retreat, or similar extraordinary measure.

I work remotely. In my experience, I start feeling removed from my teams about every six to eight weeks. I jump on a plane and work out of the office for three or four days, and I've had my fix. I'm good to go again - I've reconnected.

Every team and team member has different needs. If you're feeling a disconnect - you're probably not the only one. If the team of remote and stay at home workers you're responsible for isn't performing as well as you'd like, perhaps give a little thought to what you might do to regain the connection.

Gosh I hope this is true, because believing this is about as close to "faith" as I will likely ever get.

What do you predict for 2016?

Happy New Year Entrepreneurs!   What do you predict for this year?   What new trends do you think will emerge?   Where do think new opportunities can be found?   What about your own business? - do you think things will get better or worse, or don't you know?

Where do you want your business - and your life to go?   Will you be "staying the course" or making a change in direction?     This is more or less an open question about how you feel about then coming year.

There are no "right answers" to these questions of course, but each in our own way, I sincerely hope we all grow and thrive in this new year.
