What do scammers have that we don't have?  See the man in this picture?  His name is Shane, he weighs close to 700 pounds, and he is a scam artist.   I know this for a fact, because he scammed me.  Not in a big way, just for a few hours of work, but he has subsequently scammed other small businesses and it is unfortunately a sociopath like this is loose in our society.  This is an interesting story in its own right and if you are interested you can read more about it here: https://goo.gl/zCb0BN

That is not why I posted this though.   I posted this because although this man is a loose cannon, almost certainly on his way back to jail, it is amazing how much he got done, and how many people he got to trust him - including me to a point, even though everyone said the same thing - that there were a number of "red flags" and they knew something seemed wrong.

I first spoke with Shane when he responded to a professional services ad I had posted on Craiglist.   I learned later he was in some kind of physical rehabilitation center because he was so fat he literally couldn't walk anymore.   Still, in spite of this, he got some developer to work with him on what looked like a fairly sophisticated application in the trucking industry, completely secured an office and phone system with no money, continued to broker truck freight deals, and got a number of people to provide services for him with no payment up front.

How did he do it?  I am not sure - I know with me one of the many "red flags" was when he said he wanted to hire me full time to run his operation - too early in the relationship. I was maybe drawn in because he seemed to have a ready way to make cash flow in an established industry - by brokering truck freight, but there was something else.  I have heard it said that many scammers work not by satisfying your needs, but by being "needy" themselves, and making you think you are the one who can satisfy their needs.

It might be something else though.  Perhaps honest people have "doubts" that they project because they want their deals to work for all parties - while scammers have no such concern and can project great confidence.  I am not sure what it is, but wouldn't it be nice if we could "extract" that good part while leaving the dishonestly behind?

What do you think?  Have you ever been scammed?   How did they do it?  - and as weird as the question is, is there anything good we can learn from them?___

The Reddit Revolt.  I haven't been following this all that closely, but apparently the volunteer moderators on Reddit have almost completely shut down the site.   What struck me is how different this is from what is going on with Google communities.  They haven't been upgraded in over a year, the moderation tools are terrible, and there hasn't even been one iota of communication with us - and yet there hasn't been one peep out of the user community, except perhaps by me.

As I have said before, with any other company this would be called "a poorly managed program" but Google gets a pass "because they are Google".   I run a large community here, and against all odds have done my best to keep it more or less well managed, but no thanks at all to Google - they have simply ignored all my attempts to communicate with them through private channels.  ... more »

While some of the issues are similar, it is unlikely Google would ever have a similar revolt, and in fact the exact opposite happens here.  Anyone who mildly criticizes Google, no matter how constructive, can expect to be trolled and attacked by the "Google+ helpers": https://goo.gl/59JUy6

The overall conflagration isn’t really about one well-liked employee but about problems that stem from Reddit’s dependency on free labor and its increasingly difficult relationship with those volunteers... Yet their efforts pale next to those of the volunteer moderators (“mods”), who act as sheriffs of individual “subreddits”.. until recently /r/fatpeoplehate, the banning of which spurred a user revolt last month. Normally, it’s the mods who clamp down on the uprisings of the hoi polloi and stamp out profane comments, inappropriate images, and mass cross-subreddit invasions, a mostly thankless task for which they also receive zilch...  In exchange for power to police the community and a degree of influence over what the community does, these mods do the janitorial work of reining in trolls and sheer nonsense that Facebook and Twitter outsource to offshore employees. But patronage has a different incentive structure than corporate capitalism, and the unprofitable Reddit has few resources to spare to help mods do their job. For years the mods have asked for better moderation tools and a better mail system for communicating with each other and with Reddit, to little effect.  ___

To be honest, I have been lazy, since Google has made life much easier. I did learned something today. So here is how I quickly search on Google+ in Chrome browser with just a + symple and search terms

PS. I am using Microsoft Sway to create this page. It is pretty cool and free.

Google never hears the screams - Part II,  Why does this not surprise me?   Actually they got the problem right "the company's super-nerdy, relatively homogeneous make-up can can sometimes lead to questionable product decisions" but the solution is questionable to day the least.   I have mentioned before that I heard Microsoft actually goes to users homes to learn how they use their products, and I am positive that Google does not do that.  So this is what they do instead?

I often find myself here wanting to know the answer to a really simple question - how did the original designer at Google  _think_ we were supposed to use the product?  So much here simply makes no sense at all - at least to me, and never has.   Where should we make a topic post? - to our own profile?, to a circle, to a tag? to a community?, or multiple communities?  To a collection?  What isthe diffe... more »

What is the difference between Google Circles and Contact Groups, and when should I use each?  I still don't know the answer to these, and many other questions, and while I may not be as smart as Google employees, I am not stupid, so they shouldn't need to "simulate stupidity" by getting drunk.

Google also seems to pride itself in not talking to us.  The have even set up a buffer of unpaid support workers called "Preferred Contributors" they use to insulate themselves from direct contact with the outside world.  Right now I can't even get through to my own contact data on Google - the most "mission critical" information of any small business, and there is now way to get help.

I have also been trying to find out what is going on Google Communities for months now.  I have worked my ass off to keep my entrepreneurs community going with zero support and a rather lame technology, and have written several heartfelt letters to Google trying to get any information at all.  Somehow, we are supposed to keep our communities professionally managed with no information or decent moderation tools.

There have been no upgrades to the Communities technology in over a year and no communication from Google product managers.  Will Communities be dumped? - or will they be upgraded and improved?  I have no idea, and needless to say, Google hasn't responded to any of my messages.  With any company other than Google this would be described as "poorly managed" but somehow Google always gets a pass.

Who knows, maybe I am too old to use Google products - that company, with an average age of 29, seems to have gone out of its way to normalize age discrimination, but I believe Google is caught in a horrible feedback loop.  They have gotten so used to people praising their every move that they have come to believe that everything they do is brilliant, and now they think must get drunk to be able to understand their own users. ___

Google Contacts Fail.  This is incredibly frustrating.   Google has now made that new "contacts preview" the default contacts manager, and I haven't been able to access my own contacts for weeks.    I get the error

"There was a problem loading your contact.  Please reload the page and try again

Except that reloading the page just gives the same error.  I have a decent Windows machine that doesn't have problems with other programs - just this one.   As usual, the Google support forums don't seem to have any useful information that I can find.

As a small business, this is my most mission critical information so this is a serious problem.  It is also embarrassing for me, because I have gone above and beyond trying to use Google products - this one in particular, for small business development which has clearly been a mistake.

Does anyone know if there is some way to get the old Google Contacts back?   Some hidden link?   - or is there some other solution someone might know?  ___

I don't get this either.  Remember when Rush Limbaugh called a young woman a slut because she believed that birth control should be covered by health insurance.  Mitt Romney didn't renounce it, and he lost any chance for my vote then and there.   It was a softball lobbed over the plate, and no one swung at ti.  Republicans often come off as bullies - attacking the weakest members of our society like single mothers on food stamps just trying to feed their kids, but they also don't stand up to bullies.   Honestly, I understand why Trump is rising in the polls.  He has made the rest of the Republican field look like a bunch of wussies.
