Mario Rotta15,308This is a circle in which I included a lot of excellent photographers: but most of them start from pictures to create visual design effects. So, this circle may represent a list of people working on the edge between photography and art. I like that experimental edge :-)2014-05-22 06:00:41400016CC G+

Sumit Sen57,209A Circle ShareCircle sharing by individuals seems to passé these days, and most shares are curated circles put together on some general basis by a few. That suits me fine because I am not fashionable and pretty faded! :)This circle is not one which contains all my best friends here or all the folks whose photography I really admire. It contains members who are my engagement set. People who follow my posts and people whose posts appear on my stream on a regular basis. Part of the selection has to do with Gplus's stream feed algorithm and part of it has to do with time zones. But these 200 are part of my life on GPlus now and I meet them virtually almost everyday.I am sharing this list mainly for the benefit of my new followers who are looking for worthwhile additions to their circles. I expect that they will not be disappointed by the selection. Finally, comments are closed. You can of course share and plus if you want to :)2013-03-23 15:19:4120001580CC G+

If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to November 18th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting November 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday2012-11-18 12:31:453791136CC G+

G+ with Brushes1,928As I am returning to my regular second-half-of-week shift on +G+ with Brushes , I once again re-share our artists' circle, now 93 people strong. This is the circle where we look for paintings and drawings to share. Please, if you are an artist working in traditional (non-digital) media, and you are not in this circle, and you do want your work to be occasionally re-shared on our page, do the following:1. Add the page to your circles, if you haven't already (it's not because we want to pump up our followers' numbers, but just because we cannot add to a circle anyone who hasn't added us first).2. Tell us that you are an artist and want to be in this circle, so that we don't miss you.3. That's it, basically, but if you feel like it, you might also spread the word about our page to your followers... :)Yours truly,+Lena Levin 2012-10-18 18:00:1293646CC G+

Samantha Villenave415,621I call this circle "Artcest".These people are my tribe, my love, the delight of my stream. This circle contains the 99 (plus moi) non-photog artists that I interact the most with, according to Google's algorithm. If you aren't in here, it isn't that I don't adore you, it's just that these peeps and I've got history, interaction, and mutual drooling and conversing over paintings and the like.I can guarantee you that each is a delight to follow. Some are NSFW, c'mon, but you don't care about that, because you know what you want to see in your stream here, it's innovation, beauty, paintings, sculpture, illustration, and mad creative experimentation. Each of these friends share primarily posts concerning art, whether their own and others. Certain among them are, IMHO, at the core of the art community here on G+. They're its central nervous system. They bring the internal into the external, here, on our not so tiny corner of the Interwebz. To be consumed, without moderation. #art   #circleshare  2012-10-15 06:55:32100592651CC G+

Margaret Tompkins30,121>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Great Photographers With < 25,000 Followers>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  *There are NO requirements to share this circle*.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Each has < 25,000 followers (when they were put into the circle), and most have between 10,000 and 25,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  Landscape Photography:  I invite everyone to check out the +Landscape Photography  #LandscapePhotography  theme.  If you want to impress me, that’s the place to do it!!  Post a great landscape that will get my attention.  See the About tab for all the details.I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you! #Circleshare   #Sharedcircles  2012-10-08 18:04:38500337118265CC G+

Landscape Photography5,833Landscape Photography Most Active+Landscape Photography    #LandscapePhotography is proud to announce its first circle of most active participants.  Why Save This Circle?  These are the people who most frequently post to the #LandscapePhotography theme and who comment on other people’s photographs.  If you want more comments on your landscape photographs, this is the group who will most likely provide them.  The Google Plus Relevance feature was used to select this group.  I’m Not Here!  What Can I Do?  Post more frequently to the #LandscapePhotography theme and interact more on each post.  Don’t just comment.  Have a conversation.  How do you do that?  Ask questions.  Most people will be delighted to answer them.  Ask follow-up questions.  Before long, you will have a conversation going.  Ask leading questions.  Those are the ones that take more than a yes/no answer!  Enjoy the conversation!!  You will meet wonderful and interesting people all over the world.  Enjoy the G+ experience.  #Circleshare   #Sharedcircles  2012-10-04 12:12:09500984974CC G+

Sorry! :)At nearly 1000, my art circle is bursting at the seams. It's too big to share on it's own anymore, so I thought I'd break it down into several smaller circles, to share over a period of days. These people fill my streams with visual imagery, sometimes beautiful, experimental, evocative... each one has a unique perspective and practice. Most of these people are painters, drawers, illustrators, sculptors, etc. (I generally keep my photogs in a separate circle, with a few exceptions, for good measure. So yes, this circle is a different beast.)The desire to connect with other artists is what brought me to G+, and it is a huge part of why I am still here.**************************************************************************A note about this circle, and my sharing it.Every time I share a circle, I get a backlash of anger from people that are not in it. Honestly, it is to the point that I rarely share circles. Please know that this circle is not all of the artists that you should be following here on Google+, it is simply the artists that I follow. I have chosen them for personal reasons, and enjoy following each of them. I am sharing them because I believe that you may also enjoy following them. This circle reflects my choices, of whom to follow, please be respectful of that. If you are an artist, and not in my circles, please feel free to say hi and let me know in the comments, so that I can mosey on over to your profile and see your work!  #art #creativity #sharedcircles  2012-08-20 18:50:235917815CC G+

Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-08-18 11:00:4341411111CC G+

Margaret Tompkins25,055<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Great Photographers With < 25,000 FollowersThe photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Each has < 25,000 followers (when they were put into the circle), and most are between 10,000 and 25,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention. There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you! #Circleshare     #Sharedcircles  2012-07-25 23:09:23497209111208CC G+

Martin Bailey37,482It's been a while since I shared my Photography circle, so here goes. This circle is the result of a year on Google+ interacting with many, many amazing photographers. It isn't a comprehensive list of the best photogs on G+, and it doesn't contain everyone that I interact with or follow. I have a few other circles for people that share good info but don't interact, and I have some lists of friends that haven't taken the time to upload enough photos to make their profile look pretty. I'll shift them over when their profiles look good. Superficial? Yes, but I like things to look pretty. This isn't a list that I'll add people to on request. If our paths cross and you share good content, I'll add you in due course. If you think you should be in here but aren't, I'm sorry. Let's stay friends and you'll be in their someday if you continue to share original and interesting photography related information. There are also a number of people that write in Japanese in here. If you don't like posts in languages you don't understand, weed those plussers out later, but they are in the list primarily because they're great photographers, so hopefully you'll keep them circled.Enjoy...2012-07-18 12:47:18438501350CC G+

Innocence - Oil on canvas

This is probably one of my favourite paintings of the year. It was done following a workshop with Zhaoming Wu. That one workshop had a significant impact on my direction.

Blackfoot Chief (after Julius Seyler) - 11x14" - Oil

I recently discovered the work of Julius Seyler and am so enthralled by it. I sometimes think the universe works in the most amazing way. I had just been talking to my husband about what I was striving to do; about how I wanted to paint western themed images but in a very impressionistic way. And I was complaining about my desire to continue learning, but I was frustrated at not having any learning opportunities in the style and direction I want to go.

There are impressionist painters that I love, and there are western painters I admire, but the two seemed to be at opposite ends with the western artists being too traditional; and the impressionistic ones subjects weren't western. About a week later I accidentally discovered a book about Seyler, while looking through books on other artists.

I was gobsmacked. Here... more »

How is it that it's been almost 2 months since I last checked into G+? What can I say? I've been busy painting. Since spring finally arrived I've been trying to get outside to enjoy the sunshine while it's here, and if I'm not there I'm painting. Sometime's I'm doing both!

I've been trying to go out to paint plein-air at least once a week, weather permitting. I have much to learn in regards to plein-air painting. I struggle with the light and overload of information, which is what makes it so challenging.

This is just a sampling of some of my newer work. Skies continue to be my focus with landscapes, but I've recently started to paint the one thing I thought I wouldn't do (because they are almost a cliche for this region) -- mountains! However the mountains form a major part of our landscape, so....... I think I'm making progress with my... more »

I was in Vancouver earlier this month to take a workshop with an instructor I've been wanting to learn from. Although I really wanted to do a figurative workshop with this instructor, I decided the still-life one she was offering would be a good opportunity to learn about her style and theories, which it was.

The side effect of this was that I really enjoyed doing still life and can see what a great tool it is for learning to see better. The single pear was one of the workshop studies, and the other two were ones I've done since I got home.

As long as our weather continues to be cold and miserable I'll be doing more still life set ups trying to improve my brushwork and handling of colours and values.

This beautiful horse is a young stud colt from a herd of wild horses on Alberta's eastern slopes. You have perhaps heard that the Alberta government has called for a cull of wild horses. Supporters of the wildies have been trying for years to get the horses put on a protected status. They have proven the bloodlines of much of the foothills herd goes back to Spanish mustangs. These are truly wild horses not simply abandoned or escaped horses.

If you are appalled the government would call for a cull of these beautiful and majestic animals please voice your opinion. It may be too late for this years cull, but you can help stop future culls. You can start by signing this petition: https://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/protect-alberta-s-wild-horses-a-heritage-animal. You could also support Wild Horses of Alberta Society or

I've been dividing my time between the photo studio and the painting studio. I work a couple days on paintings, and then work on photographs. I'm developing a new series of Zen inspired impressionist/abstract photographs for a client.

I love creating these kinds of photographs - both taking them and processing. According to the reports from one of my other agents, they are also the images which sell the most.

Things are never quite as they appear though. Can you guess what all these images actually are?

Starting from the top left we have the forest reflected on ice; the car windshield while going through a car wash, cattails at a pond, (especially for +C.J. Shane) the Sonoran desert.

Here... more »

I will once again be offering a calendar for the coming year. After hearing from disappointed customers after not doing a 2013 calendar, I knew I had to bring it back. But I can't deal with the work involved to design, print, and distribute my own custom calendar this year, so went back to using Red Bubble who I used to use for all my calendars before I started having them custom printed.

Anyhow, my 2014 calendar In Your Dreams is now available.

Cody Foster and other corporations that knowingly rip off the designs and work of artists should be publicly stoned. We can't do that today, but we sure can expose them.

What does this say about the art world? When even Banksy can't sell his "art" anonymously for $60, yet the demand to own a Banksy is almost frantic. Had he attached his name and publicity to the stunt, and priced the work in the tens of thousands (or more) the scene would have been one of people trampling each other to get one.

A little media mention of an exhibition I'm part of on now in Calgary.

I was down in Calgary on Wednesday night for the Calgary Stampede's Showcase Stirup - their western art show opening event. It was busier than I've ever seen it and there was lots of art being sold, which was so great to see.

I have a piece in the auction which will be on Thursday July 11th, so I'll be back in Calgary then, staying over a few days to do some photography around the Stampede grounds.

I was in Calgary yesterday for the production of Les Miserables. I hadn't been looking forward to going to the city so soon after the flood. I wrote about the experience here: http://500px.com/uncommondepth/stories/94968/alberta-strong

I'll be back in Calgary Wednesday for the Stampede's Showcase Stir-up, the preview art event; and then again the following week for several days for the art auction, concert, rodeo, etc. I've got a press pass, so will be photographing behind the scenes. I'm betting there will be more stories to tell.

It's been a week since the flooding starting. A week in which I should have been working, both in the studio and elsewhere. I don't know why, but I wasn't able to work amongst the stories of devastation. While we weren't directly affected, so many friends and businesses were.

I have two shows starting in Calgary next week. One is the Calgary Stampede's Western Art Auction; so part of my anxiety has been in waiting to hear if either of my shows would run (they both will - although one is opening a bit later than planned).

I have cried a lot of tears over this past week. I grew up in Calgary, but spent a lot of my time in the communities around the city that have been hard hit. High River.....it breaks my heart to think that so many of those hundred year old buildings may be lost forever.

Last night I had a dream. One that took me back to the studio.Th... more »

The Calgary Stampede's Western Art Auction catalogue is out. It's available online if you're interested. Yes, I do have work in the auction. Will you be attending?

I must say I really dislike the new G+ layout. It feels dyslexic and scattered, and makes it really hard for me to follow anything.

Announcement

I've been MIA for a long time. Truth is I've simply been too busy. For the past several months I've been working on a new venture which I'm happy to announce today.

I have partnered with Cafe Press to make my images available to the public through their website Great Big Canvas. Yaaaay!

I signed a licensing agreement and have been working hard behind the scenes along with the wonderful people from Cafe Press to bring my images to you in an easy, affordable manner.

Great Big Canvas offers more than just canvas prints. You can purchase framed paper prints, posters, and even wall decals! Great Big Canvas is putting my work within reach of any budget, and by offering international shipping, to anyone in the world.

This new partnership marks a major shift in direction for me as I will no longer be focused onph... more »

McMillan's Herd

McMillan's Herd - 11x14" - Oil on linen panel.

I based this on a photograph I took last June. I did this for one of my homework assignments where we were supposed to use line, mass, and point brushstrokes. We've got company coming for supper tomorrow, and then I've got to deliver work to the Lacombe Art Show, so my painting days will be on hold.

If you're in Alberta and looking for something exciting to do this weekend, do check out the Lacombe Art Show, it's one of the provinces best spring art sales.

I reworked this older painting, for one of my course projects. We were required to find an old painting where we'd painted it thinly and redo it with thicker paint. Canadian Wheatfield was based on my photograph by the same name. I'd liked the painting but knew it was poor quality because of all the smoothing and how thin the paint was, so I was eager to see if I could do a better job of it. It's hard to judge from this small image, but it's much better now.

Foothills Skyscape

Foothills Skyscape - 24x12" - Acrylic on canvas

This was done mostly with the palette knife. I've really come to love palette knife painting and think I paint better with it than with a paint brush!

Since we are still having snow I spent a bit of time today catching up on posting work to my website. There are new paintings posted to all the galleries except Small Works. If you look let me know what you think! http://www.robertamurray.ca/galleries/

Ruffled Feathers

This poor little bluebird is so sad because it's snowing again and it can't find any flies. He's wishing there would be blue skies and sunshine, like there should be on any fine spring day.

8x10" Oil on canvas panel

I think there will eventually be a series of bird paintings. I'm trying to make up my mind whether they should be more caricature-like, like this one, or more impressionist like the other bluebird one I posted the other day. Or maybe there will be a bit of both.

Of course I'm still working on my Vision Quest series, painting classes, learning, experimenting, playing, photography, and so much more. I need to live another hundred years after I die just so I can get it all done!

Buffalo Dancer

Buffalo Dancer - 16x20" - Acrylic on canvas

This didn't end up looking anything like what I'd intended it to look like. I had started out with the intention of doing an abstract piece, but started working on the sky first, and then the prairie scene started to unfold, and pretty soon my abstract figure was not going to work as planned.

I've run into a problem painting abstract since I started my classes. Oh well...I'm not entirely dissatisfied with how it turned out.

On the home front, my DH is gone on a business trip for the next few days. I'm taking advantage of time alone to get our taxes done so when (IF) the weather improves I can head out on my annual birding/photography (and now painting) trip.

Who knew there were so few options for Canadian tax software available for a Mac. I tried one thismo... more »

I am in search of the best pochade for location or plein air painting. Who would like to weigh in with their experiences, likes, dislikes, etc.? My requirement is the pochade must be able to accommodate a variety of sizes of panels up to 11x14" (or at least accommodate 8x10 and 11x14").

I know many will probably list the Soltek as the best, but I have already ruled this one out due to a combination of price and reported problems with delicacy and tripod legs.

Figurative 1

I was doing a little experiment of working pastel over a watercolour underpainting. I'm not sure it was all that successful. There are a few problems. Oh well....that's what experimenting is for.

I have an opportunity to spend a week with Zhaoming Wu, but I know my painting abilities are not even close to being good enough. I feel this is an opportunity I can't miss, despite my skill level. I need to spend the next month or two practicing figurative drawing so I don't make a fool of myself if I actually get in.

Prairie Winds

Prairie Winds - 11x14" - Oil on canvas panel

I'm taking off for three days of painting - my weekly class Friday and then a two day workshop Saturday and Sunday.

After this weekend I'm hoping spring will cooperate with me in arriving because I really am itching to get out to do a little prairie painting and photography.
