Alister Macintyre42,106Do not confuse this circle with the one I have on Native American Indian interests.  My India Circle has people whose lives have either passed thru the great nation of India, are there now, or interested in India.  My interests range world wide, some nations more than others.  I recently started an Asia circle, and tried to pour into it my circles for Australia, China, Japan, India, some other countries, but bumped into another of G+ silly ceilings.  I have circles for several major regions of the world, including Middle East, Eu-W, and Eu-other.  I also have circles for specific nations like Germany and Haiti.2014-03-27 18:26:53148002

Lucas Appelmann12,923For quite some time I haven't shared circles. I now will, exclusively on g+, by presenting the world my "Favorite International Users" circle. It only consists of about 100 people - and most of you will already have a good amount of them in your own circles. So why am I posting this, then? The reason is that these people are highly relevant for my g+ experience and viewing the stream for this circle it contained all the posts that I found important in my main stream. Timothy Coxon655PageRank 5 PeopleHaving just managed to work out a fairly good semi-automated process for getting all the people I follow graded by Page Rank and into appropriate circles I thought I'd share one. This is my PageRank 5 circle. Which is probably the best circle to circle for ambitious engagers ;)PR7 & PR8 were exclusively the domain of brand pages.PR6 had some people in there (still mostly brands) but more than likely you wouldn't stand a chance of engaging with them.  Would like to thank +CircleCount for giving me the final piece of the puzzle this process turned into, +Jim Banks for providing a different but still essential piece and +Joshua Berg for his series of articles on pagerank/g+ that initially started this latest obsession ;)Oh and if you don't already and want more of this kind of thing circle +Euro Maestro ;)  #pagerank   #sharedcircle   #timothycoxon  2013-03-19 22:44:235631315

I recently saw a Kickstarter with a pretty shocking name. It was a 3D printer called Rapy. My first instinct was to rush to Twitter to make fun of it, which I did, and which lead others to follow suit and speculate on what form of idiocy or misogyny could lead to such a name.

But then I thought to look closer. The reason Kickstarter had suggested this project to me is that it was based in Korea. Created by non-native English speakers. The name was pronounced "Rappy" but an honest misunderstanding over the way vowels are pronounced in English and the definition of the perceived pronunciation lead to the mistake.

So I wrote a polite e-mail to the project creators one Korea-based Kickstarterer to another to let them know. And you know what? They were awesome, friendly, thankful, and immediately changed the name of their product.

"This 16th century book is an example of sixfold dos-à-dos binding, in which six books are joined together to form a single book. Each book opens individually by way of its own little clasp."

Isn't this amazing?

Oh, hey! Finally, after 2 years of hard work by illustrator +Diana Nock  and editor +C. Spike Trotman  the graphic novel I wrote about how to travel cheap has come out! My goal was to make the anti-Lonely Planet. It works for every country and doesn’t tell you WHAT to see but how to confidently and inexpensively find stuff on your own. I covered everything from how to pack for a weekend trip to how to find an international or location-independent job. Everything I learned over a decade traveling the world making comics. Just 5 bucks for Digital, 10 bucks for print!

I recently wrote a 10 minute play called Dogfish for the Busan International Shakespeare Festival. It’s a comedy about how often Shakespeare’s characters fall in love after reading a fake love letter written by their jerk friends. It is super nerdy, and contains a wide variety of dirty Victorian jokes and cheesy Mtv references. I decided to make the play available under creative commons so that if anyone out there is as dorky as me, they can do whatever they like with it. You can get the script here: http://www.ryanestrada.com/dogfish/Dogfish.pdf

My Nana.
1918-2014.

Leatha Deane was an awesome lady. She lived 96 years, and made every one count. She survived two husbands, brought a whole bunch of supercool daughters into the world, who brought her a whole heap of grandchildren, and the great grandchildren multiplied exponentially. But even with all those offspring, she made a difference to every one of us in ways that changed the lives that we already owed to her. Probably not a day went by that she wasn’t helping someone in her family go to college, get a house, fix a car, get medical treatment- and instilling us a sense of appreciation for what she had because we know the work and sacrifice she put into every penny she shared.

My Nana.

When I was in college, I had the good fortune of being able to play odd couple with my Nana when I moved into an apartment attached to her house. Me, the one so messy and careless I would amass a mountain of disgusting dirty dishes that I would throw away every 6 months instead of washing… and her, the one so intent on making the most of everything she had that I had to sneak into her apartment at night to steal cans of beans that had expired 7 years earlier and throw them away before she ate them.

But living with her, and listening to her stories, I learned to appreciate what I had. Granted, sometimes the lessons drove me crazy… like when I offered to buy new towels to clean her kitchen with and she rushed to her basket of old clothes and made my scrub the floor with my dead grandfather’s used underwear. It was the grossest day of my life, but it was equivalent to making a naughty teen smoke a whole pack of cigarettes. I got the message. Make everything count, make everything matter. From days, to years, to interactions with the people you love, to cans of beans and old pairs of underwear.

I appreciate being able to introduce her to my wife Hyun Sook Kim over the phone. She’d tearfully welcome her to the family every single time, and tell me how happy she was that I found someone to love. But she couldn’t quite grasp the pronunciation of Korean names. We never told her- and every time she was SO PROUD that she’d finally mastered it. And every time, she’d call Hyun Sook something so wildly different from her actual name that it became a new nickname. Shu Tzu, Shee-shu, Chubby Chip, Sunka and Nooka have all become part of our vocabulary.

But as much as I love, respect and honor my Nana, I am going to do something now she wouldn’t like. I am going to tell you her biggest secret. The thing she wanted no one to know. Something that her own family, the people she was closest to still don’t know. A secret she took to her grave.

Leatha Deane was an Everybody Love’s Raymond fan.

I cannot begin to imagine why this was so secret, but it was. I lived just below her. There was no door between us, just a stairwell. And every day at 5:00 I would hear those tennis balls at the bottom of her cane scuff the floor as she walked over to her chair, turned the tv to CBS, watched Everybody Loves Raymond, and laughed at the jokes.
Each of the dozens of times I went upstairs to see her during her show, she would freak out like I’d just caught her watching porn. She’d fumble with the remote and say “oh, I don’t know how this got on, I was just flipping the channels. I don’t watch this show. I can’t get this remote to work. Can you change the channel?” and every time, knowing she wanted to watch it, I would reply “Oh, I like this show. Can I watch it?” And we would watch together.

I’ll miss her. I wish we hadn’t been so far apart so that I could have introduced her to Chubby Chip in person and we could have all watched Everybody Loves Raymond together.___

This week, a project that’s basically been my full time job for almost 8 months… that I have been working on in some form for almost 8 years… That took the work of 20 different artists from who knows how many countries was finished.

I got to read my book, Broken Telephone, for the first time. And I couldn’t be prouder. I cried in a coffee shop. My collaborators went above and beyond the call of duty. Those tiny thumbnails down there? That’s what it looks like.

(Don’t zoom in too close! Spoilers!)

Everyone who’s seen it has had nothing but kind words. It’s now off to agents and publishers and people who can help me figure out the next step.

I’m so happy and overjoyed to be done, Of course, like an idiot, the second I finished I had to go and start a new webcomic.

I'll be in a live hangout in about 24 hours, talking about embarking on creative projects outside your wheelhouse and how they can improve your work!

Talking about finding new opportunities & improving your work by taking the "not my thing" challenge on the LIA Cast!

I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer! – Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Given all that goes into being a visual storyteller, it's easy (and understandable) to default to our own realms of comfort and expertise to talk ourselves out of trying new things. Especially things that are "not our thing."

But what if trying such things led to new job opportunities or enhanced your visual storytelling abilities?

We're thrilled to be joined once again by +Ryan Estrada (http://ryanestrada.com), who will walk us through how hosting game shows, participating in open mics, and running parody Twitter accounts opened up new professional doors for him and added to his storytelling tool kit.

You can participate in the discussion via comments on the G+ event listing.

Fun fact: Part of this book is in Korean and my lovely wife Hyun Sook Kim translated it! (A part about KISSING) This is her second time translating Rainicorn-speak in an Adventure Time comic. I'm jealous of my wife's comic career.

Writer Ryan North and I got to learn a lot about Korean kissing terminology from Hyun Sook on this one. We alternated between 'popo' (a cutesy kids term meaning literally 'smooch smooch') 'kissu' (The most common term used. Why do they use our word for kissing? Surely kissing existed before western influence) and 'ip machum' (which literally means 'mouth touching.')

know y’all don’t have Spidey 2 yet, so I’m not gonna spoil it for you. But I AM going to review the product placement. Because it’s WEIRD.

First of all, unlike the first movie Spidey doesn’t Bing ANYTHING this time. In fact, there’s an scene where he surfs barely-disguised Google for no reason and then watches YouTube videos. But the logo is always hidden. So it’s not placement- it is apparently there JUST to say “Spider-Man doesn’t Bing anymore, guys"

Also, the WEIRD 1997 flashback scene that is ENTIRELY about risking your life for a Sony Viao- a product they discontinued in February.

Lots of weird scenes that go out of their way NOT to advertise a product but are more distracting and in your face than if they had been. I assume this is the only thing I will remember about the movie since all I recall about part one is Bing andcranes.... more »

Happy Holi, everyone! Here’s a preview of my newest book, Satyagraha. It’s the story of the time I was thrown from a train.

I totally deserved it.

You can get the whole 37 page adventure right here for a buck: https://sellfy.com/p/qJld/

While producing a radio show, I’ve recorded all kinds of stories that I loved, but couldn’t put on the air. So I put together this special internet-only episode. This is my first foray into audio podcasting, so if you enjoyed it, tune in NEXT Tuesday for a new selection of stories!

My latest book, Seomyeon John, is a 65 page portrait of the strangest man I’ve ever met. He was rude, unhelpful, homeless and horribly racist. He was my friend. Together we hitchhiked across Korea to visit his long-lost adoptive father in a mental hospital. You can get the whole tale for a dollar: https://sellfy.com/p/yAdt/

Curious about Comixology Submit?
It can be hard to get info about how it works! Since I love data-sharing and transparency, here's everything I learned in the process of making $8.80.

I want to print all of my comics in one crazy book like this.

Books Are Cool

"This 16th century book is an example of sixfold dos-à-dos binding, in which six books are joined together to form a single book. Each book opens individually by way of its own little clasp."

Isn't this amazing?

My new book, Coca War just came out! It’s told, as all true tales of drug cartels, martial law and near incarceration, should be, in lighthearted rhyme.

It went out to all my Fortnightly Comics Club subscribers, but you can still buy comics à la carte! Everything’s a dollar! https://sellfy.com/ryanestrada

Today my wife and I went Yachting around the Gwangali bridge.

Selected conversations with the crew:
Captain: "This is Lion."
First mate: "Lion?"
Me: "Ryan."
First mate: "You brother is Tiger?"

-

Captain: "You have baby?"
Me: "No."
Captain: "You need baby"
Wife: "No, we're okay."

So I wrote a polite e-mail to the project creators one Korea-based Kickstarterer to another to let them know. And you know what? They were awesome, friendly, thankful, and immediately changed the name of their product.

I learned three things from this...
(1) Don't be afraid to give feedback. Some people may take it the wrong way, but it may really help someone out and save them hundreds of thousands of dollars when everyone else was afraid to tell them that their 3D Printer needs a trigger warning.
(2) Be nice to people who DO give feedback. Formatting an e-mail accusing someone of naming their product after a sexual predator is terrifying. SOmetimes, we may just want to help.
(3) One more amazing thing about Kickstarter is that people can make these mistakes, learn from them, and fix them all before putting the product on the market.

Now, it's called Rappy: http://www.stellamove.com___
