UK Photography Community315,963An event to celebrate all things farmy - be it Farm houses, Barns, crops, tractors, farm animals, livestock auctions, etc. Showcase the great British and Irish Agricultural Industry and landscape!Just so you city dwellers have half a chance to participate it is open to your allotment crops and to any specialist Farmers Markets if you have them. Sorry but that doesn't mean the local duck pond or the vegetable section at Tesco's!The event doesn't open until Thursday 18th Sept and closes the following Monday. That gives you two weekends to get out there. It's harvest time in many parts of the country, so no excuses for lack of Farmy activity!Must be your photo.  No limit to the amount of images SO LONG AS THEY FIT THE EVENT THEME & YOU AND THE PICTURE ARE FROM THE UK and/or Crown Dependencies, not forgetting Ireland  :) Any photograph that doesn't fit the theme will be removed, so make sure your image has a connection to agriculture production (not supermarket sales). We look forward to seeing the images you share.Have a great week everyone. Alan Gurling2,774London Capital Ring Photowalk 2014 - Section TENOnwards the Northern Path!24th August 2014, SundaySouth Kenton to Hendon Park - http://j.mp/1omYpCODownload Guide (PDF) - http://j.mp/V9rc0IDownload Map (PDF) - http://j.mp/1nF5KHI- - - - Background Story - - - -I've decided that for 2014, I will be doing the London Capital Ring http://j.mp/1nTGfqs and will be completing it before the year ends.To make sure I cover everything before the year ends, and give allowance for unforeseen circumstances, I will be doing a section every three weeks. So far, I've been able to cover NINE sections with fellow awesome photowalkers Christin Tietjen, Simon Freeman, and Peter McClintock.- - - - The walks, so far - - - -Section 1 - Woolwich Foot Tunnel to Falconwood was done on 25 January 2014. A great walk, we passed through the most magnificent Severndroog Castle, and passed by many parks! This was one of the longest walks though.Section 2 - Falconwood to Grove Park was done on 22 February 2014. Shorter walk, but we got fantastic views around Eltham Palace at the end.Section 3 - Grove Park to Crystal Palace. Some magnificent sceneries mostly from Beckenham Park! A very photogenic bridge, and the big house by the golf course were beautiful highlights of this walk. I highly recommend this walk.Section 4 - Crystal Palace to Streatham Common / I have to say that this was so far, the one with the least amount of good stuff to take photos of. The Rookery in Streatham Common, just before the walk ends does save it though.Section 5 - Streatham Common to Wimbledon Park. Wonderful surprises! This was a very nice walk, and the forecast for the day being rainy, we were instead greeted with long sunny spells! Lots of fine scenery and Wandsworth Common took us by surprise. We ended the walk at a very fine pub/restaurant called The Woodman.Section 6 - Wimbledon Park to Richmond Bridge. Started sunny then heavy rains. Still, we were able to end it with some nice blue skies at Richmond Bridge and ended at a pub that's been there for hundreds of years!Section 7 - Has to be the highlight so far. Richmond is just photogenic! I highly recommend doing this route and ending after Syon Park.Section 8 - We pretty much followed the River Brent around. Had a nice view of the Hanwell Viaduct, as well as taking a detour through the Bunny Park.Section 9 - Probably one of the most tiring walks we've had! Two big hills (Horsenden Hill, and Harrow on the Hill) climbed, but it was very much worth it. Forecast was rain, but it was only for a short while. Stopped at THREE pubs on thLondon Capital Ring Photowalk 2014 - Section TEN2014-08-24 11:00:004

Margot M0Okey Dokey ..... I'm proposing a walk through Richmond town into Richmond Park and ending in a pub on Richmond Hill or on the Thames.  Date: Saturday 26 October.  Meet: Outside Richmond Station (accessible by Overland or District Line Underground) at 13.30. Will confirm nearer time exactly where we should meet.  I know the area well but would absolutely hesitate to call myself The Walk Leader. Donegal Photowalk 2014215Here is the official Event for the 2013 UK Seaside Photowalk. The official kickoff will be Saturday morning, probably around 9am. Then again, there will be people out much earlier to catch the sunrise, that's for sure. Please indicate whether you will be joining us, so we have a rough idea of how many people we can expect. Please note that this is not a confirmed booking or anything. Whoever shows up will be welcome. If you can join us only for one day, Saturday or Sunday, that'll be fine, too, of course. We'll make sure to announce tour details and meeting points in a few weeks. We hope to see you all there. And if someone has good connections to the weather gods, please let them know that we'd prefer the "no rain" option. CheersAthena & AndyUK Seaside Photowalk2013-10-05 09:00:0071

Quiet London5,453Our next @113043236129480244763 walk is going to take us from the Monument at London Bridge, through the City and onto the Temple tube station. (This will be slightly longer than our previous walks, so this could be a good place to jump off if needed!) We'll then wind our way through to Covent Garden where we'll be able to get some excellent chances at street photography. We'd love it if you'd dawdle with us on our March walk through parts of inner London, laugh at bad jokes and catch up with old acquaintances and hopefully make some new ones. We look forward to walking, talking and shooting with you!Quiet London - Monumental Monument!2013-03-02 14:00:0030

Gailen Mapes62,357Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera  N-Q - 9 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to April 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting March 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-04-09 10:48:3515210217

A +1 won't do it and it doesn't matter whether I follow you back or not because for at least that month I will follow you if you comment. If you aren't normally in my circles then it's up to you to show me why you ought to remain. That could be by even more regular interaction with me or by sharing your own stuff that makes me want to engage back.Irrespective I do truly appreciate each and every comment folks make as it's this interaction that drives any social media site. Without it, we may as well not be here. Thank you, Diolch, Grazi.2014-01-31 06:53:00811517

If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to January 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting December 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Weekly Photo Project 2013491Many of you have asked for a circle, and here is a rough draft of it. This circle represents the people who have posted a photo for the first theme, that we know of. If you submitted a photo do us a favor and search for your name in the circle. There's a search box option on the screen after you click "View shared circle". If you see your name that means we found your photo and you're good. If you submitted a photo and you don't see your name in this circle do us a favor and re-share your post making sure to tag it correctly and we'll get to it. We'll then release a version 1.0 of this circle after we see if there's anyone we didn't get to.A reminder that this is an open group so this circle will constantly change so the best way to find photos of other participants right now is to search for #weeklyphotoproject2013 . You can save the search for easier access. Thanks everyone for a great week 1 and we're looking forward to seeing what you all come up with for week 2! -Iain2013-01-08 18:01:4518219611

Jerry Johnson5,061────────────────────────────────────          Monochrome Monday       ──────         Circle L-Z for 16 April      ──────              "thank you"           ──────────────────────────────────── • Firstly, we would like to thank everyone for participating in #monochromemonday ! • There was a very good turn out this week with over 900 people taking part! :-)• We include those who post MCM photos AND those who comment on them, because we believe that the interactions between people is a huge component of what makes this theme so special!NEW• Starting this week, we will share some of the best images contributed this week from the +Monochrome Monday page. So even if you don't add this circle, since Google+ requires users to circle a Page before that Page can share their posts, please be sure to add the Page so that we can include your image if/when we select it. Images that have more than a certain number of pluses (To be determined) will be added to the gallery almost without question. The curators of the theme will also pick images to add regardless of the number of pluses. This way, everyone will have a chance of being shown in the "gallery". The gallery shares will generally take place on Thursday or Friday.Hopefully the circle includes everyone that contributed to Monochrome Monday this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you.+Charles Lupica +Hans Berendsen +Jerry Johnson +Monochrome Monday and our newest curator +Manuel Votta would like to thank you for joining us this week. See you next week!!If we missed you we're sorry. Please let us know in the comments and I will try to make sure that you are included next week.Note: We want to be up front and transparent as your curators. Many of the people in this circle received a "notification" that we added them to our circles. This is a temporary circle that we have to create based on the tools available to us on this platform to build our circles, and please know that we can't keep everyone in the long term. We will keep people that have circled us as long as we can, but we may need to eventually drop some of the people that added us. #circleshare #sharedcircles +Best Shared Circle ◊◊◊◊2012-04-18 18:00:13468421037

Steve Gill10,469UK PhotographersHere is my circle of interactive UK Photographers. There are some great names in here and they will fill your stream with interesting posts. Now, if you don't see your name here, or the name of someone who should be here, just add a note in the comments and I will add you before I share again. If you are a UK based photographer or aspiring photographer, please let me know. I only want to include people who actively share work on G+ so I regularly check each and every nomination to ensure that only interactive people who have shared work in the past couple of months are included. If you haven't posted anything for a while you might find your name dropped.2012-04-05 07:59:3831926510

If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 29 for this set.A word about spam... A lot of previously good photographers are sharing a lot of goofy stuff these days. Remember, if you are in the "Hand Picked" circles, you are represented as "more photos, less spam." Goofy animated GIFs don't hack it and I reserve the right to drop you from these circles. So if you were dropped, this is probably the reason. (I have the same 5000 limit as everyone else. I can't afford to keep spammers in my circles.)2012-03-29 20:05:1741510610

West Pier

Day three of my Five Day Black and White Photography challenge as nominated by +George G.

This is a minor re-edit of a photo taken during the photowalk in Brighton earlier this year hosted by Glyn Dewis. The background was purposely blown out to give it the effect of a seamless white background. The edit I've done this time was merely the removal of a little sticky up bit to the left of the pier.

Today I shall nominate +Lee Churchill - there's no pressure to take part, but the idea is to post one black and white photo per day which can be old, new, or a re-edit as in my case, and then nominate someone different on each post.

Day four of my Five Day Black and White Challenge and I an resharing a photo taken a couple of years ago at Royal Victoria Country Park, looking across Southampton Water to the oil refinery at Fawley.

I seem to recall wanting something a little gritty and atmospheric - I think I got it.

My nomination for today is +James O'Gorman and the plan is for you to post a black and white photo everyday for five days - it can be old or new - and to nominate someone each day to take part. No pressure to take up the challenge, it's purely up to you.

Royal Victoria Country Park in the Fog

Day two of my Five Day Black and White Challenge. I was challenged by +George G to post one black and white photo everyday for five days (the clue is in the challenge title). It can be a new photo or an old photo, and at each posting you nominate someone else to take part.

Today I'm going to nominate +Rupert Wood - there's no pressure to take part, but it might be fun if you do.

This is a photo from the other week when we had some really good early morning fog down south and I decided I should try and catch some of it in my favourite spot. This was taken from near the entrance to the park, looking across the cricket ground to the chapel in the distance.

I have been challenged by +George G to take part in the Five Day Black and White Challenge (shakes fist). The challenge is to post a photo each day, but it can be new or old. My day one share is an old photo of my mum and dad's cat Tigger (imaginative, I know).

As I've been invited into this rather late, it's going to be a struggle to find someone to nominate, but I think I'll go with +Darren Button :-)

New photo and new nomination tomorrow.

I must try and pick one thing and stick with it.

I keep getting ideas for new skills, starting researching, then move on to something else before I've even learned the basics. I tried a bit of html, then I tried a bit of Python. Now I'm back to html and css. I need to stick with it this time though as otherwise I'm never going to learn anything new.

Spinnaker Tower

The final photo from the Worldwide Photowalk marks the end point of the walk at Gunwharf Quays. Originally conceived to celebrate the Millenium, a number of planning, financial, and construction setbacks meant the 170 metre tower did not open until 2005. The views from the observation deck are apparently amazing, though in the 9 years it has been there I have yet to visit it.

Many thanks to everyone who came along to make the walk a success, with special thanks to +Darren Button for roping me in to the organisation, and to my dad +Dave Prince for being the route guinea pig the week before.

Looking for writers...

I'm looking for any (free) writers who are interested in writing for a geeky blog, on a none commitment basis.

Essentially I want people to write about the geeky things they're interested in. The blog is thegeek.guide and primarily it's about, gadgets, tech, video games and other geeky pop-culture that's interesting.

If anybody is interested feel free to get in touch via hangouts, g+, or facebook and let me know the things you're interested in writing about and we'll discuss what you'd like to write.

The website currently isn't ready, the main focus right now is content. I have a tiny budget right now and can't pay writers for their content, hopefully this will be an option in the future. So please excuse the lack of any kind of real branding on the social pages and the website.

From the Square Tower to the Round Tower are the remains of the defences to Portsmouth Harbour. The walls at this point are commonly known as the "Hot Walls," which attract many people, especially during the summer, as their south-facing nature lends well to sunbathing.

Skyways

This rickety roller coaster has been sat on the edge of Clarence Pier overlooking The Solent for years. It was there when I was a kid and terrifies the hell out of me (though I've never been on it). The roller coaster has apparently been on the pier since it opened in 1961 (Wikipedia).

Fairground Horse

There has been a permanent fair at Clarence Pier for longer than I can remember. The amusement arcades have been a permanent fixture with the fairground rides changing little over the years (e.g. the waltzer used to be indoors and is now outside).

The Portsmouth Grammar School

The imposing entrance to PGS on High Street, Old Portsmouth. Quite an imposing Georgian facade designed, I'm sure, to instill a feeling of order and power over the pupils who enter via these gates.

HMS Dauntless

"HMS Dauntless is the second ship of the Type 45 or Daring-class air-defence destroyers built for the Royal Navy." (Wikipedia)

Alongside No.1 Basin at Portsmouth Dockyard. No.1 Basin is like a huge canal lock that originally served four dry docks (two now permanently house HMS Victory and the Mary Rose). On this particular day it was like a mill pond providing the perfect reflection (except for a bit of detritus on the surface I cloned out).

Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photowalk 2014

After a number of weeks planning, +Darren Button and myself led a group of ten photographers around Portsmouth yesterday as part of Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photowalk 2014. I devised the route (with a minor adjustment last week) to take in the Historic Dockyard, part of the seafront and defences, and Old Portsmouth, before finishing up in one of the many hostelries in Gunwharf Quays. The route was a little over 4 miles long, we went over time by about 50 mins, and only lost two people (though both were found again by the end).

I had a thoroughly enjoyable day, made all the better for the forecasted showers to only show up for about 10 minutes at the start with the rest of the walk being blessed with blue skies.

The image attached is from the start point of the walk just outside the main gates to the Historic Dockyard, and is of HMS Warrior.

"Warrior, launched in 1860, was the pride of Queen Victoria's fleet. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest, fastest and most powerful ship of her day and had a profound effect on naval architecture. Warrior was, in her time, the ultimate deterrent. Yet within a few years she was obsolete."

"Restored and back at home in Portsmouth, Warrior now serves as a ship museum, monument, visitor attraction, private venue and more." (http://www.hmswarrior.org/)

Why Google+ is the place for passions

The single biggest controversy about social media, and one that has persisted for two or three years now without resolution, is whether Google+ is a dying wasteland of non-activity, or a hive of conversation and engagement.

It can't be both. So which is it? And why can't this fundamental question be answered?

I believe I have the key to the puzzle, and I'll attempt to solve it once and for all.

Here what the Twitter people and the Facebook people don't understand about the Google+ people:

I consider myself to be just one among 7 billion human beings. If I were to think of myself as different from others, or as something special, it would create a barrier between us. What makes us the same is that we all want to lead happy lives and gather friends around us. And friendship is based on trust, honesty and openness.
