Mykal Hall375,047+Jay Patel and +Varina Patel are here in Australia for a workshop in Port Stephens hosted by +Brent Mail on the 3-5 Jan 2014. I have twisted their arms to do a photowalk here in +Sydney on the 11 January 2014.  So lets show our guest the welcome the Sydney Photo Community has to offer. We will meet on the steps in front of the Sydney Opera House at 6.30pm and slowly make our way to Hickson Rd Reserve for sunset and then to the end point at Observatory Hill by 9pm. I have plotted a few photo opportunity locations along the route as well as public toilets that I know of.https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zw_eAURDDMag.kLJfMBZmQ50o There are plenty of food outlets to grab a quick bite to eat at Circular Quay for the journey. I have walked the route in 1hr 40mins at a leisurely pace but you may want to stay at one location longer if you desire. That will be fine as long as we all get together at the start to greet Jay and Varina and then at the end point to say our goodbyes. Then afterwards if you still feel in the mood to chat over a drink we will be heading to The Hero of Waterloo (if there is only a small group) or the Harbour View Hotel (if there are more than the Hero can fit).I recommend catching public transport to Circular Quay or Town Hall but if you drive in there are a few parking stations within a short walk to the Opera House. I suggest downloading the "Cheap Parking App" from the Google playstore or iTunes. This will give you pricing options from closest or cheapest and links to get to them.I hope everyone has a great time during the walk socialising and remember you can approach Jay, Varina and myself at anytime to ask any questions. Please share this with anyone you may know who would want to join us. :))) Looking forward to see you all and don't forget the hash tag #PatelSydneyPhotowalk+Jay and Varina Patel Sydney Photowalk2014-01-11 18:30:00142G+

Drink And Click™ SF519Allright, not only is this the September #DrinkAndClickSF event, but it is also the "Birthday Hangover" party for +roma g +Luc Asbury and Myself (+Michael Bonocore) who all share the most holy of birthdays, September 19th. What makes a #DrinkAndClick successful? Well of course, the photographers and friends who attend. But BESIDES that, it is great bars, great pub grub, and crazy street characters. +Todd Sipes identified the perfect location for that this month. The home of the Grateful Dead, and some of the most colorful characters this city has to offer, Haight Street! So we will be meeting at the legendary Kezar Pub between 5:00PM and 6:30PM.http://plus.google.com/106808013026678003045From there we will walk right across the street for some Golden Hour photos in Golden Gate park. I can almost guarantee a hacky sack game will be happening. About 7:00PM, we will begin our walk up the legendary Haight Street, stopping at 2 pubs (to be named later), and aiming to end up at Buena Vista Park at 9:00 PM. Make sure to bring your tripods, as on a clear night, you can get some amazing photos of the Golden Gate Bridge and Downtown San Francisco. From there, it is a free for all of drinking and clicking. We are having #DrinkAndClick chapter wide challenges this month! Please attend this event to be included in the challenges. https://plus.google.com/events/ccqtjh576u9vfapvhs5b5ulaim4 Hope to see you there!Drink And Click SF - September2012-09-20 17:00:00137G+

Charles Lupica83,296═════════════════════════════════     Top Photographers you should follow                 An Art of Photography Circle  Photographers whose art we think will amaze you ═════════════════════════════════#ArtOfPhotographyCircle tag to allow people to easily mute this post. It's been a while since I shared a circle here on G+ so I thought I would team up with +Scott Thomas and +Brian Dukes to share with you the first new circle I've created in more than a year.  We think you'll find that the photographers in this circle are some of the very best that G+ has to offer.  Of course you're probably already following people like Jeff Sullivan , Lori Hibbett, Jay Patel and  Vivienne Gucwa but we think that all of the people in this circle will add high quality content to your stream.  All share their amazing work and many of them share tutorials and resources to help you perfect your art. When deciding who would be in this circle, we used these guidelines• Sharing mostly their own work• When sharing the work of others, the work is clearly identified• Little to no, promotional material. • Some people are included that share a lot about technique but may not share a lot of their photography.• If they have gifs in their stream, they're almost always educational. • The images shared by these people frequently fall into the category of, "I wish I'd taken it" • They post to G+ on a regular basis,  For some this may be a little as once a month.  For others, this may be one or more a day.  People who post less than once a month are not included.  We prefer to circle people that are active here on G+. No one has asked to be in this circle, however, we intend to share a version of this each month.  *If you know of a talented photographer you'd like us to add*, please leave a comment and share the circle.  Doing so will get us to look at their profile. However, there is no guarantee that we'll include them in a future circle.   We want to maintain the quality of this circle.  Therefore, we will only add photographers that we would want to see in our own personal stream. Many of the photographers in this circle are well known so we are particularly interested in hearing your choice of photographers with fewer than 15'000 followers.  We would like to give them the opportunity to gain more views for their work. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the quality of the work by the photographers in it.  ValidationThis circle was very heavily vetted.  We have looked at each photographer's stream and decide that we would like to include them in this circle. +Charles Lupica (me), +Scott Thomas and +2014-06-27 17:39:05116935056CC G+

As I have yet to share a circle of my own I will try and give something back, in the hope it helps those in a similar position. I am not posting this for +1's, shares or to gain new followers - so please do not feel obliged to share, +1 or follow - there are plenty of those type of circle shares around if that's what you want The circle below is just a selection of the 3000 or so I follow. All are excellent and active contributors to G+. It's quite Landscape biased (too many great photographers to pick out one or two), but there are examples of other genres and resources for example:Great photographers who work tirelessly through communities and pages, producing great interaction, such as +Margaret Tompkins +Kevin Rowe +Rinus Bakker and +Nancy Dempsey .... wonderful creative artists like +Heidi Anne Morris +Lotus Carroll +Bryan Peterson .....street photographers such as +Thomas Leuthard +Angelica Guckes ......the exquisite beauty of flowers and Macro by +Rosie Nixon +Silke Tüxen ......great teachers such as +Nicole S. Young +Jan Kabili +Jimmy McIntyre ......fantastic resources such as +2014-06-27 15:04:3482231014CC G+

Gailen Mapes60,498Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera  N-Q - 9 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting Feburary 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-03-09 11:14:071549317CC G+

Our upcoming Hawaii workshop is filling up fast! The last time we were there, we photographed the lava as it dropped into the Pacific. I have to say - this photo doesn't do it justice. No photograph could. The experience was beyond anything I can explain. The heat of the lava. The turbulence of the water as super-heated lava touched its surface. The violent bursts of steam. The shifting colors. The landscape breaking apart with a force beyond anything you could imagine - and the lava pushing itself free from solid rock. Incredible.

I can't wait to go back! Are you thinking of joining us?

Self Portrait on the Beach

...and a few simple tips for taking shadow portraits.

This is one of my favorite places in the whole world - the black sand beach at Jökulsárlón in Iceland. When I noticed my tiny reflection on the rock, I decided this was the perfect place for a self portrait. So, I set up my tripod with my camera on it, stood so that my legs lined up with the shadow of my tripod legs and the shadow of my camera was hidden by the shadow of my body. Then, I set a two second timer, released the shutter, and threw my hands into the air. It was an incredibly easy shot - and a really fun and different self portrait. :)

Tips for taking shadow portraits:

1. Look for a simple composition, so that your shadow doesn't get lost in a cluttered scene.

3. Hide the shadow of the tripod in your own shadow. Nobody will even know it was there!___

My awesome son, Damian, achieved his black belt in Jujitsu on Friday. We're enormously proud of him. He has worked very hard over several years for this - and has put in incredible effort in the past few months preparing for the test. Well done, Damian!

My daughters will test for their black belts in two weeks. Get ready world! ;)

Our Hawaii workshop (with +Jay Patel and +Colby Brown) is right around the corner, and there are still a few spots open! I can't wait to get back to the Big Island once again. The variety of terrain is fantastic there.

I took this shot in a wooded area near Rainbow Falls. The natural echoing pattern of these gorgeous trees pulls me in, and the soft mist reminds me of the peace I feel when I set foot on these beautiful islands.

A couple of quick tips for shooting in the woods:

1. Look for simple compositions. Forests are full of clutter - dead branches, dry leaves, criss-crossing branches... it's a mess in there... and that makes for busy photographs. So, look for a single point of interest and build your photo around that.... Or use a narrow depth of field to simplify the... more »

1. Look for simple compositions. Forests are full of clutter - dead branches, dry leaves, criss-crossing branches... it's a mess in there... and that makes for busy photographs. So, look for a single point of interest and build your photo around that.... Or use a narrow depth of field to simplify the background.... Or look for repeating patterns that will help you simplify the scene. Here, I used the pattern of tree trunks and arching branches to create a relatively simple composition. I framed my shot to ensure that I didn't include anything extra - no distracting stumps or rocks... just trunks and foliage leading you down the overgrown path.

2. Watch your color balance. In kindergarten, we all learned that trees are green, right? Well - they aren't just green. Pay attention to the rich, golden tones in the leaves and make sure that comes across in your color balance selection. Primary Green is for Kindergarten. ;)___

Post-apocalyptic Cityscape

... and a couple of tips for Macro Photography on Ice.

I took this shot in New Zealand while hanging out with +Trey Ratcliff's workshop group. It was a freezing cold morning, and the frost covered everything. To me, this looks like a post-apocalyptic cityscape... the buildings toppling one after another. ;)

I used my 180mm macro lens to get in close - and then closer - until those tiny ice crystals seemed to fill the frame. I wanted an incredibly narrow depth of field. Just a few millimeters of focus to show off that "skyline", while blurring the ice crystals in front and behind.

1. Macro shots are a heck of a lot easier with the help of a tripod and a good ball head. If your ball head slips, it's going to drive you crazy... tiny subjects will disappear from your frame with even a small shift. Make sure your... more »

If your ball head slips, it's going to drive you crazy... tiny subjects will disappear from your frame with even a small shift. Make sure your ball head is nice and tight, and take the time to adjust your composition until it's exactly where you want it. And then, be careful not to bump that tripod. ;)

2. Be sure your focus is exactly where you want it. I use the live view setting on my camera to get a good look at my subject - and then I zoom in to 5 or 10x while focusing. I use auto focus if I can, but there are times when manual focus works best. If the camera is "hunting" for your subject, switch to manual.___

We are officially releasing our Behind the Lens Course! How exciting!

Behind the Lens Course: A Guide to Fieldwork

I am happy to announce that after running trial period for 3 weeks, we have launched our Behind the Lens Course. For limited time we are offering 33% discount.

The Behind the Lens Course goes in depth about the choices you make and why you make them while you are in the field. We give a simple workflow to help the photographer decided how to choose the right lens or the right shutter speed....weather or not to use the filter....where to place the rock you see in the foreground...or how to create a mood...or how to avoid distraction...or how to capture a great shot if your post processing skills are limited.

This course is design to help you think in the field and build your photograph around a point of interest by making the right choices of equipment, composition, camera settings so that you can make the viewer see what you see....and feel what you feel.

Enjoy & Share.

Brand New

Look who we discovered in our little magnolia tree this morning! She has two little brothers in there with her - and their mother has been back and forth all day making sure they are all well fed. I grabbed my macro lens for a quick photo shoot while Mama was away. My 180mm gives me a little bit of extra working distance... which is great for subjects that might not like a lens right up in their business.

Welcome to the world, little ones!

A quick tip for Nature Photographers: :)

Mid-day is a great time to shoot small details. Bring along a diffuser, and look for tiny subjects. I love to find a tiny detail like this one, and build a photo around it.

I've been so busy working on the course we filmed in New Zealand, that I haven't posted any of the photos I took while we were there! We'll release the course very soon. (Hooray!) Meanwhile, here's one of my favorites.

These bright red mushrooms were covered in little white spots - like toadstools from the fairy tales I used to read as a child. I found this one with a tiny streak of yellow that looked like a flame, and couldn't resist. I love my macro lens. ;)

A couple of weeks ago, I put out a blog post about delegating tasks when you are running a small business (you can find it here: http://visualwilderness.com/quick-tips/know-when-its-time-to-delegate). And then my good buddy +Curtis Simmons sent me this link to +Melissa Simmons' website.

This is exactly what so many of us need. I love the idea of hiring Melissa for a set number of hours for a variety of administrative tasks - rather than hiring a full or part-time employee. It's a great way to find out if delegating tasks will work for you - without making a long term commitment. How great is that?

Lothlórien, Catlins, New Zeland
BEST VIEWED LARGE

I am sure that Lothlórien, settled by Silvan Elves of Nandorin in the JR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is located in Catlins, New Zealand. This fantastic scene was what we encountered when we filmed our first lesson - Capturing Light & Mood. It was just breathtaking....and cold (very cold). ;)

How was this image created?
This image was created by selecting the right lens and right composition to create Lothlórien. Our upcoming video course describes what element we did not include and why we left them out and which shots we did NOT take. ;)

We finally gave up on our flight after three delays, and rented a car to make the drive from Philly to New York. A good choice, since our flight was finally cancelled. The drive has been VERY slow... But at least we're moving! Normally, this drive should take about 2.5 hours. Today, it looks like it will take 6. The plows are out in force - as many as 8 at a time in a line here on 95N. But they've got their work cut out for them.

We'll be careful. I promise!

Julian needs $20,000 to make this happen. He's had the same leg for 10 years now, and he has fixed it and modified it many times to keep it in working condition. But he can't keep it going forever. Have you done any night photography?

Here are a few tips for getting cool night shots! Add your suggestions below!

I took this shot during our workshop in Australia. I gave away my f/2.8 lens so a student could follow along with the workflow we were presenting - so my settings were different from the others in the group... but no worries. Keep an eye on your histogram, and don't be afraid of experimentation.  Here are my basic tips for night photography.

1. Get your focus right. Your auto-focus won't work in the dark, but a flashlight should give you the light you need to set your focus. Take a test shot and zoom way in to check so you don't find yourself with a bunch of blurred photos when you're done! I stood and held the flashlight for 15 minutes or more while everyone set their focus. It took some time since we were making sure everyone was on the... more »

Take a test shot and zoom way in to check so you don't find yourself with a bunch of blurred photos when you're done! I stood and held the flashlight for 15 minutes or more while everyone set their focus. It took some time since we were making sure everyone was on the same page.

2. Light Painting is fun - and I think it might be even more fun with a large group! :) We all released our shutters at the same time, and then +Jay Patel and I took turns moving the light across the rocks in front of us. We took a whole lot of shots... some were too bright, and some were too dark. Just keep experimenting until you get something you like!

3. Pay attention to your histogram - but don't expect a neat "bell curve". You are working with very dark tones, so you should see a peak on the left side of the histogram. You probably won't see much on the right side of your histogram unless you really go crazy with the light painting. :)

4. Use a wide-open aperture, and keep your shutter speed under 20 seconds or so. A longer shutter speed will result in short star trails. (If you WANT star trails, you'll need a series of 30-second exposures.) You'll need to bump up your ISO to get the aperture and shutter speed you want... so you'll probably want to clean up some noise in post.

Have you been out shooting at night? Share your suggestions and experiences in the comments! And have fun out there!___

Big thanks to +Paul Gunther for taking this great group shot from the Sydney Photo Walk! I really want to thank +Mykal Hall for planning the event - it was a great success. And thanks to Mykal and +Dianne Hall for taking us out the morning after and getting us to the airport on time, too! :)

This was one of our best trips ever - one of the most fun... and definitely the most productive. I can't thank +Johny Spencer enough - he went out of his way every single day we were there... driving, shooting, and just being an all-around awesome guy. And +Brent Mail - I hardly know what to say. He welcomed us into his home, spent hundreds of hours filming, downloading, and editing... and is still working away Down Under, preparing the video for release. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you guys! And we can't wait to do it again!

I had the pleasure of meeting +Varina Patel and +Jay Patel  in person in a photo-walk organized by +Mykal Hall  starting from the +Sydney Opera House.   I was heading down the steps to get some backup group shots when +Jay Patel called out for me to take the prime shot, I used my wifi remote to actually get in the shot myself ;-)

Judging by the number of smiles in the group shot and the feeling it seemed to be all over so quickly were pretty good indicators a good time was had by all.
It was also great to catch up with the many familiar faces I've come to know via this channel.

Unfortunately I only made it to the wait-list on their recent workshop in Australia and hope to actually attend one.  (ps. If there's a chance of Lava or Aurora I'm there! ).  PS. Thanks for all the many tripod tips +Varina Patel  ;-)

What an amazing start to the year! +Jay Patel and I have spent the past several days down under - teaching a workshop, making new friends, and exploring beautiful Australia. And maybe most exciting of all - recording a brand new teaching video. I never thought I'd be so excited about something like this, but this is a completely new thing for us. +Brent Mail and +Johny Spencer have been instrumental in helping us build a product that will surpass anything we've done before - by leaps and bounds.

+Frederick Van Johnson once suggested that we try to "bottle and sell" our knowledge... And that's what we're doing! W've recorded an enormous amount of footage, and we're building a one-of-a-kind recording that will let us share what we know with anyone at any time... Even if they can't join us on location!

And if that's not enough excitement for one week,... more »

+Jay Patel and +Varina Patel are here in Australia for a workshop in Port Stephens hosted by +Brent Mail on the 3-5 Jan 2014.

I have plotted a few photo opportunity locations along the route as well as public toilets that I know of.

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zw_eAURDDMag.kLJfMBZmQ50o

There are plenty of food outlets to grab a quick bite to eat at Circular Quay for the journey. I have walked the route in 1hr 40mins at a leisurely pace but you may want to stay at one location longer if you desire. That will be fine as long as we all get together at the start to greet Jay and Varina and then at the end point to say our goodbyes. Then afterwards if you still feel in the mood to chat over a drink we will be heading to The Hero of Waterloo (if there is only a small group) or the Harbour View Hotel (if there are more than the Hero can fit).

I recommend catching public transport to Circular Quay or Town Hall but if you drive in there are a few parking stations within a short walk to the Opera House. I suggest downloading the "Cheap Parking App" from the Google playstore or iTunes. This will give you pricing options from closest or cheapest and links to get to them.

I hope everyone has a great time during the walk socialising and remember you can approach Jay, Varina and myself at anytime to ask any questions.

Please share this with anyone you may know who would want to join us. :)))

Looking forward to see you all,

We are having a dangerous amount of fun on our Australia workshop right now - but the real world keeps on turning... there's a contest running over at ViewBug right now, and I'll be the judge. You can enter to win some pretty darn cool prizes!

Help!

Hey, Bay Area friends! Storms in Chicago made a mess of my travel plans yesterday, and I missed my flight out of San Francisco. The next flight to Sydney is late tonight. Luckily, +Jay Patel is already in Sydney, and he'll get the workshop started without me tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm holed up in a hotel room near the airport.

Can anyone suggest locations for shooting, exploring, or wandering? Preferably within walking distance of the airport? I don't know the city well... and I'm open to suggestions! I'll need to head for the airport around 8pm... But until then, well... I have no idea!

Can you help give Julian a new leg for Christmas?

Just 2 days left to help my cousin, Julian, get his new leg! He's been making clever repairs to his old one as it deteriorates, but it's not going to hold up much longer. If you haven't made a donation already, please consider giving whatever you can! We've raised over $8,000 already - but we still need nearly $12,000 to make this happen.

That's my cousin, Julian, jumping off the rock. When he was 14, he was hit by a drunk driver, and he lost his leg. You can see that it hasn't slowed him down! :) Now, he is badly in need of a new prosthetic - his doctors have been urging him to get a new one for almost ten year - but it's going to cost way too much. Can you help? If we all give a little, my cousin can get his leg. And if you can't give money - maybe you can share this link.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
