This page and two graphics absolutely do it.  They show that the one and only effect of Supply Side Economics was to favor the rich.  LOOK at these graphics. The blatant before and after, clocking from 1930 to the present how well the middle class has done vs. the oligarchy. This is not socialist-leftist talk.  There was never an entrepreneurial market capitalism more healthy and vibrant than the one left to our parents by FDR, Truman and Eisenhower.

What these charts show is what Adam Smith said, all along and also F. Hayek and anyone with any sense.  That we get the benefits of competition when it is flat-open-fair and when no one's advantages are so huge that they can cheat.  "Conservatism" and "libertarianism" used to understand this. They grudgingly understood the need for SOME regulation to keep competition flat-open-fair.

The one and only solepurp... more »

Professionals must be our allies against thugs. I've often pointed out that good cops deserve not just respect but also some allowance for the tension and adrenaline that comes with an extraordinarily difficult job.  But it is illogical and self-defeating for them to show “solidarity” with the thugs on the force. With the advent -- and now widespread adoption -- of cop lapel-cameras, after Obama Administration and court rulings that citizens have a blanket right to record their interactions with police, the road ahead is clear.  Technology and law both demand the professionalization  of police.

Now another piece to the puzzle. The largest organization of public defenders in the country is building a “cop accountability” database, aimed at helping defense attorneys question the credibility of police officers in court.  The contents of the Legal Aid database have been harvested froma variety o... more »

The polarization of approval ratings (seen in this article) show, more clearly than anything else, that the United States is not in normal politics, but outright civil war.  “In his sixth year in office, 79 percent of Democrats approve of Obama's performance, while just 9 percent of Republicans do. George W. Bush's numbers were exactly reversed in year six of his presidency (79 percent of Republicans approval vs. 9 percent for Democrats).”

The screwy thing is that this can be judged objectively. We are taught and schooled and finger-wagged that ‘opinions are all of equal value.’  But it’s not true. Some are rooted in actual facts.

Yes, I have said this ad nauseam.  But it bears endless, endless repetition till it sinks in: “Name ONE unambiguously attributable metric of U.S. national economic or social or physical health that improved across the span of the lasttwo GOP Admini... more »

Mid-week posting: "where are the deathbed confessions?" Wherein I point out that the youngest of the supposed JFK assassins would be an old fart, by now.  And human nature - especially in our YouTube generation - should have drawn them out, by now!  Seriously, can we make a society that encourages henchmen to turn whistle blower? ...  And I conclude with a rumination on that relentlessly unloved figure... An international group of astronomers has determined that 70,000 years ago a dim star is likely to have passed within our solar systems Oort Cloud — 52,000 astronomical units (AU) or 0.8 light years from the Earth. That is five times closer than Proxima Centauri.

To answer your next question: “98% of the simulations showed Scholz’s star passing through the Oort cloud, only one brought the star within the inner Oort cloud which would have triggered “comet showers”.  Still, one is tempted to look for impact fluxes having gone up, 60-70,000 years ago.

A graphic to show your "vaxxer" friends... whether they be of left or right.

Left out, a more illustrative fact.  In the late 1950s the most popular man in America was Jonas Salk.

And yet, there is one thing to say for the vaxxers.  All those vaccines must have done brain damage, after all.  Because we boomers are the most outrageously gullible, sanctimonious and dullard generation ever.... to fall for the imbecillic, anti-scientific and dismally ungrateful trips that are rampant across today's very-far-left and entire right.

Uri Aviv runs the Utopia series of science fiction festivals in Israel. (see below)  Here he makes some very interesting connections between SF and the history of the eventful 20th Century: “Over the years science fiction has inspired the exploration of space and cyberspace and was first to imagine the robot, cyborg, clone and technological singularity. All of these are "mere byproducts" to the real focus of science fiction -- society -- communities, relationships, individuals -- how we transform, mutate and evolve through science and how we use and abuse technology. Science fiction creators imagine the un-imaginable and explore the impossible, they perform huge scale gedankenexperiments and by doing so they give birth to our future, for giving shape to the impossible today, gives shape to the every-day of tomorrow.”

The video’s last third consists of a terrific, low budget sci fi short called “cost of living” that is well worth watching.

This article shows both true wisdom and obdurately silliness.  Yes, we need to double down on America's investment in "breadth" in college.   All around the world, the normative baccalaureate degree is three years, with utter specialization. The American (and Canadian) Bachelor's Degree takes four years because all STEM majors are required to take a year's worth of humanities/history/Lit etc... and vice versa.  This author is only expressing the value system under which she was raised.  One with which I wholly agree! (As a "scientist/novelist" who earns his living across the entire spectrum.) You want MORE breadth?  Fine. I am down with that.

But to not even acknowledge that's already what we do?  Vastly more than any other nation on Earth?  Did you see her mention that? Even remotely?  Nope, just finger-wagging chiding -- the coin of our era --instead o... more »

Neoteny - the extension of childhood for ever-longer periods - was part of how we humans developed agile and adaptable intelligence. (So I argued in a paper, twenty years ago.) Now research shows this trend to be extending even farther in the latest generation. This has many aspects, beyond offering hope for the parents of slow-maturing teens. It also sheds light on the one process that ever created "sapience," that we know of.  Yet, it is a process seldom discussed in artificial intelligence circles!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11413884/True-adulthood-doesnt-begin-until-age-25.html

My own highly unusual paper on neoteny’s role in human evolution: http://www.davidbrin.com/neoteny1.html

Monday's posting: I slice and peel back the inner core of climate denialism, the absolute consistent trait has continued, despite every moving of the goal posts -- an utter refusal to negotiate. To allow ANY energy efficiency or research enhancement to even appear on the table for discussion. Absolute insistence that the only choice must be between shivering in the dark or betting that all scientists are wrong. Black and white. Zero shades of gray.  Come on by and see this syndrome dissected....

... especially if you are that fading breed, the rational conservative. You should be the angriest of all Americans, at the lobotomization and hijacking of the once proudly scientific movement of Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley.

Come by and argue.  Better yet... negotiate.

I have found that my “name one exception” challenges are very effective at weaning intelligent conservatives away from the Confederacy. (e.g. name one statistically significant metric of US national health that improved across either Bush administration.  Or name one “winner” of the Bushite wars, other than Iran, the Saudis and Bush-Cheney family companies.  Or name one industry that - for all their talk - Republicans ever actually deregulated, other than banking-Wallstreet. I have a ton of these “name one exception” challenges, which prove that the GOP should never again be trusted with a burnt match.)

Only now I guess there’s one I will have to retire.

Only now I guess there’s one I will have to retire.

It was: “Name one fully-red state that has done a damn thing about the utterly criminal cheat known as gerrymandering.”  More than a dozen blue states have seen citizen revolts to end this foul, evil and treasonous practice, plus a few purple ones. (Illinois and Maryland are still blue cheaters.) Red citizens, in contrast seem perfectly happy with the monstrous crime… except, as someone recently pointed out…

"Prior to 1994, the Idaho Legislature was responsible for redrawing its own districts. In 1993, the Legislature passed SJR 105, creating a constitutional citizen's body that would instead be responsible for drawing the districts. The voters of Idaho passed that constitutional amendment in 1994, with 64% in favor and 36% against."

http://www.legislature.idaho.gov/redistricting/FAQs.htm

Idaho did that? Dang! This is the first of my "name one exception" challenges that I am gonna have to retire, then.(I’d still like to see how it worked, in practice.)  Rats, I have found the "name one exception" riffs to be very effective at showing still-sapient conservatives how spectacularly vile the hijackers of their once-proud movement have become. But revealing a red state exception, that fellow made me revise. (Try it, some time. Especially re climate change.)

I now have to say “NEARLY ALL red states support criminal gerrymandering" instead of all. I can respond to data.  Can you?  Then name exceptions to my other challenges.___

A very good interview with science fiction author Margaret Atwood, by ASU Imagination Center director Ed Finn.  She says many wise things… though at many points I wanted to switch the question line onto some more challenging tracks.  In any event, like Ursula LeGuin, she seems more ready to acknowledge her roots in a despised genre of literature… the one of which America, in particular, should be most proud.

True enough, as far as it goes.  But Bruce never goes deep. For example, HOW do you expect to accomplish all of that, in a world where Moore’s Law inherently expands and distributes every power of vision, exponentially? Ironically, the only way to gain this kind of control over elites using prying eyes is to make them feel it’s likely they’ll be caught, if they stare. Transparency.

The masters of the Murdochian confederacy (and their petro-prince allies) do not want American masses who can think.
“An Oklahoma legislative committee overwhelmingly voted to ban Advanced Placement U.S. History class, persuaded by the argument that it only teaches students “what is bad about America.” Other lawmakers are seeking a court ruling that would effectively prohibit the teaching of all AP courses in public schools.”

In this phase of our civil war, the confederates' aim is not separation.  It is lobotomization.

As illustrated by the recent Ebola outbreak,   global air travel has made it far easier for disease to spread. But climate change, which is shuffling habitable zones for pathogen-carrying animals, is poised to make future outbreaks of infectious diseases such as Ebola, H1N1 and TB worse, and more frequent.  One of a myriad things for which members -- and especially promoters -- of the Denialist Cult will be held accountable, beyond "just" the inundation of coastal lands and cities. When the tort suits are finally settled, around 2080, no one named Koch or Murdoch will own even a dime. And their followers will be sharing their homes with climate/disease refugees.

The 5% or so DNA difference between chimps and humans is being explored, bit by bit. “One stretch of DNA looked promising because it was near a gene that's known to be involved in brain development. The researchers took the chimp version of this DNA and put it into mouse embryos. They took other mouse embryos and put in the human version…. Just before birth, mice with the human DNA had brains that were noticeably larger — about 12 percent bigger than the brains of mice with the chimp DNA.”

Most of the genetic differences between humans and chimps are actually found in DNA that codes for regulation rather than actual proteins… when genes get turned off and on.

Which  prompts a question — which science fictional scenario are we on the verge of unfolding? Resurrection of past species? (Not dinosaurs but perhaps Mammoths and Neanderthals, as in Existence.)  No, that’s not what this is about. Augmentation of higher animals, as in my Uplift  Series?  Oh certainly there will be some eager beavers who will splice human hare5 genes into chimps — get ready for that fire storm!

But other scenarios leap to mind. Like, well, have any of you read Poul Anderson’s novel Brain Wave. Seriously. What if this spread to all mammals?  Then we had better get smarter, too. An outcome both to be desired… and to keep us up at night with fretful imaginings.___

Last summer the UN's International Seabed Authority issued the first deep sea exploration permits, allowing companies to start actively looking for places to mine Manganese nodules and other sources of rare earth elements from the ocean floor. As I forecast in EARTH (1989). Might this be a way around the current Chinese near-monopoly on rare earths production?

Once you are done with this posting, you may see good reason to get mad!  To rebel against the cynics and fear-mongers!  But... then... maybe that's just the optimist in me, imagining that you might change?  ;-)

Professionals must be our allies against thugs.

The contents of the Legal Aid database have been harvested from a variety of sources, e.g. civil lawsuits filed against the city, criminal trials in which a police witness was deemed not credible by a judge, and news reports about police wrongdoing. Information also comes from grievances that New Yorkers have filed against individual officers with the Civilian Complaint Review Board.
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2015/02/bad_cops_a_new_database_collects_information_about_cop_misconduct_and_provides.html

The thing to keep in mind is that this must NOT become a "zero tolerance" situation, in which a good officer  must pay harsh penalties for a flash of temper or a lapse in procedure that was an exception and that wrought no major, lasting harm. There must be a scaled allowance for the fact that we ALL are descended directly from cavemen.  We need these folks! Their job is hard and often ambiguous and tense. A sliding scale of leeway must be part of it, before a cop's credibility sinks and his comrades decide that he's a bad apple, making things harder on them all.

We need the same thing regarding school teachers… one area where liberalism has been just plain wrong for decades, giving an unnecessary (and rather lonely) legitimate talking point to the Right. There must be leeway and process. But the firing of bad teachers is a duty that we owe our kids.___

Today would have been the 100th birthday of my father, Herb Brin, who covered gangland tommygunnings as a Chicago beat reporter in the 1930s, then served in WWII working for STARS AND STRIPES, then became a renowned journalist for both the LA Times and the Heritage chain of community newspapers which he ran with my brother... and became known as an international poet of no small repute. He first broke the Story of Oskar Schindler and his "list." Herb covered the Eichmann and Barbie trials and blew the first whistle on Soviet persecution of Russian Jews.  He had the most powerful sense of justice of any human being I ever saw or knew.

His dedication page includes a short autobiography that some find riveting. Life moves on. But we stand on big shoulders.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is getting super close to its planned orbit of the dwarf planet Ceres. The "white dot" mystery grows.  But I am especially interested in whether our probe finds evidence of a liquid sea, under the thick, icy crust.  If so, it will prove the "roofed water worlds" don't need the tug of a nearby planet, in order to heat and melt subsurface water.  It will change our notions of the abundance of liquid water in the universe.

This professor compiled evidence from around the world that Neolithic people were taking drugs derived from cacti in 8,600BC and that they were cultivating opium poppies by around 6000BC.

In this very interesting article  Ian Steadman offers an illuminating view of the coming Internet of Things and why we ought to start having an informed and imaginative conversation, now. For example: "… last year the New York Times reported that dozens of people across the United States are now waking up each day to find that their cars won't start. They've fallen behind on their monthly payments, and so dealers are able to remotely disable their vehicles as an "incentive" to fix their debts."

Of course the uproar over the latest Samsung televisions, with their voice command feature that can send eavesdropped conversation to their "partners," shows that one or another Orwellian pitfall lies right in our path. My weekend posting is a transparency roundup dealing with some truly important recent events.  I'm [posting it while in San Jose CA for the AAAS conference... the biggest scientific "Woodstock," where this morning I engaged in vigorous debate with those who plan to shout humanity's presence into the cosmos on our behalf, without ever exposing their plans -- or flawed assumptions -- to critical review.

Which in still about transparency.  None of us can be counted on to find our own mistakes.  We correct errors in the give and take with others, a reciprocal process that is the great discovery of our enlightenment,

Come on by Contrary Brin and see my tired but ever-relevant argument reinforced by the real thing... events in the real world. Stay free.

The one and only sole purpose of today's confederacy is to bring the plantation lords... I mean oligarchs... back to their rightful place atop the 6000 year feudal hierarchy.  But we were and remain a revolution!  A revolution of moderate, pro-flat-open-fair-competition, pro-science, reasonable people who, for the first time, ever, stymied recurring feudalism.

LOOK at these charts and tell me the enemy isn't winning a round!  So far.  But the revolution of moderate reform is strong.  It had better be.  Or the lords will face another kind.

To put President Obama's war powers speech in perspective consider:
1) that it includes a time limit and cancels the open ended resolutions of 2002 that Bush used to justify anything he liked, forever.

2) It reflects the utter-opposite general approaches to war taken by emocratic vs Republican Presidents.  You hadn't noticed?  The difference is huge, dramatic, strategic, tactical and especially in outcomes.

A  National Academy of Sciences panel said that with proper governance and other safeguards,  we should commence more research on geoengineering — technologies to deliberately intervene in nature to counter climate change.  With the planet facing potentially severe impacts from global warming in coming decades, drastically reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases was by far the best way to mitigate the effects of a warming planet. But society would be foolish not to at least carefully commence small scale experiments looking into other means of reducing the net harm.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/11/science/panel-urges-more-research-on-geoengineering-as-a-tool-against-climate-change.html?_r=0

Geoengineering options generally fall into two categories: capturing and storing some of the carbon dioxide that has already been emitted so that the atmosphere traps less heat, or reflecting more sunlight away from the earth so there is less heat to start with.

Opponents of geoengineering have long argued that even conducting research on the subject presents a moral hazard that could distract society from the necessary task of reducing the emissions that are causing warming in the first place.

I have long held that that reflex shows a monomaniacal insanity, almost 1% as bad as the insanity of the climate denialist cult.  (Yes, that insane.)   Such zero-sum, don't-negotiate thinking will doom us all.  We need to remember that a war has many fronts.  This war against wastrel stupidity and short-sightedness has many fronts.

(PS... the one geoengineering method with the best promise of simply emulating what nature does, herself, to remove CO2, is ocean fertilization.  Preliminary results have been all-good and no- substantial bad, with the side benefit of richer fisheries. Experiments are self- limiting and hence should continue.)___

Year after year, election after election, it takes so little.  The oligarchs chuckle and cast their flies. For example, if Rand Paul gets the VP nomination, or some high position then - despite the fact that he is a raving loon - the Randians will flock back, crying "all is forgiven!"

Of course this is perfect proof of insanity… doing the same thing, over and over again, expecting different results.  Take the standard libertarian nostrum that “Democrats favor freedom in the bedroom, but Republicans fight for freedom and competition in the marketplace.”

Yes!  And pixies fly off my keyboard while I am typing this!

Fine. Show me an industry that the GOP ever de-regulated, other than Wall Street/Finance. (That one industry they “free-up” every time, in order for banking lords to rape us. ) Name another. Go ahead, wise guy. NAME an industry that the Republican Party, during its stretches of complete political power, freed from the shackles of government bureaucrats.  Name one!  You who swallow their preening rhetoric, without ever demanding results or looking at actual effects and outcomes.

Now dig this.  Read it as many times as it takes to sink in.

(1) Democrats can be persuaded to deregulate. as they did with (now keep count!) trucking, telecom, airlines, rails as well as the greatest deregulatory act in human history — unleashing the free and open Internet upon the world (Al Gore's bill).

Let’s add in Bill Clinton’s deregulation of the GPS system (over GOP opposition), freeing it for use by all, everywhere in the world.  READ THAT LIST AGAIN. Look up the Interstate Commerce Commission and the horrid-captured Civil Aeronautics Board, then ask yourself why the “free competition” GOP never erased them, but the dems did.  Ponder who deregulated GPS and the Internet and the Trillions of competitive wealth that those two acts unleashed.  Fool.

Plus… blue states are the only ones easing out of gerrymandering. They were the ones who ended prohibition in the 1930s, under FDR, and who are now legalizing pot in some blue states, easing out of Drug War insanity. Name for me ANY red state where gerrymandering or the Drug War are even being questioned. (And don’t tell me “morality” is involved!  In states that lead the nation in teen sex, teen pregnancy, STDs, domestic violence, divorce, molestation etc etc etc etc…..)

The final refuge of the intelligent conservative or libertarian, nowadays is to sneer “they’re all the same!” But chuckling and rubbing their hands, Steve Forbes and the Kochs and Murdochs and Saudis love that cynical mantra! Because, come election time, it leads YOU to hold your nose and “come on home” to the Republicans. To accept whatever pablum excuse — or lies about the DP candidate — will let you rationalize slavish devotion to a party that betrays every single thing you stand for.___

But it bears endless, endless repetition till it sinks in: “Name ONE unambiguously attributable metric of U.S. national economic or social or physical health that improved across the span of the lasttwo GOP Admini... more »

Yes, I have said this ad nauseam.  But it bears endless, endless repetition till it sinks in: “Name ONE unambiguously attributable metric of U.S. national economic or social or physical health that improved across the span of the last two GOP Administrations… or more that half a dozen that did NOT improve across the Clinton and Obama spans.”

That includes every metric that sane conservatives should care about, from control over the borders to deficit spending, to rates of entrepreneurship and small business startups, to unemployment and overall economic activity… all the way to military readiness, which hit 100% under Clinton, plunged to “zero major army or marine units fully ready” under Bush, and back up to almost 100% again, under Obama.

Moreover, you know I could go on like this for hours, from the War on Science to trillion dollar American “wars” whose only winners were Saudi Arabia, Iran and Bush Cheney family companies.  To parsing which party ACTUALLY DEREGULATES or guards the borders or reduces rates of crime.

So, what are we to make of this polarization of viewpoints?  Sure, maybe a third of the blue-coalition are fixated and would approve of Obama, no matter what the facts are.  Not everyone on that side is “fact-grounded.”

But these stats show that almost no one in the red coalition is grounded even remotely in fact-based thinking or evidence, or (heaven forbid!) science.  Snap out of it!  Some of you (I have faith) can do it.  That is why I keep trying.

The cases range from housing and environmental violations to financial fraud. Four owners have been arrested, and another four have been the subject of fines or penalties for illegal activities.
The foreign owners have included government officials and close associates of officials from Russia, Colombia, Malaysia, China, Kazakhstan and Mexico."
