The image on this post was taken near sunset in Port Aransas, TX, but the water wasn't yellow, and the sky wasn't green. I enjoyed making it appear that way, however. :-) I used Lightroom to make all the adjustments on this photo; the jumping off point was a Trey Ratcliff preset called "Turkish Blast." I made several adjustments after that, including additional graduated filters and spot brushing to achieve the final effect. The Lofoten Islands

+Brian Matiash and I have spent the last week here on the Lofoten Islands in Norway. We've had some iffy weather, but the rain finally let up and gave us a beautiful sky.

This time of year the sun never sets, and as I am posting this image it is nearly 1:30 am and it's bright and beautiful outside! We have been on a completely opposite sleep schedule to accomodate our photography with the beautiful light, so we are getting ready to head out again with the cameras before checking out of our cabin and heading up North for a day. After Lofoten, we head to Iceland, and I am super excited!

• If you are photographing water, use a circular polarizer to intensify the reflection. It can also be used to remove reflections, so play around with your options.

• Try and find reflections in many different objects! Glass, metal, spoons, andwindows are... more »

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 10: “Reflection”

There is nothing like a calm, peaceful, still lake to make you feel relaxed. These mountains in the Lofoten Islands of Norway were surrounded by a glassy, mirror-like lake, which soaked up the reflection beautifully.

Tips for photographing reflections:

• There are many ways to interpret today’s theme. Maybe you can photograph something with the literal meaning, like I did here with this reflection of a mountain in a lake. Or maybe you want to go deeper and create a photograph that reflects the past, or something important in your life.

• If you are photographing water, use a circular polarizer to intensify the reflection. It can also be used to remove reflections, so play around with your options.

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 9: “Shade”

Photographers need light, but don’t forget that you can get great photographs in shady, overcast, and cloudy days, too! I live in Portland, Oregon, and we oftentimes will get a thick piling of clouds to block a lot of the sunshine. This, in turn, allows the light to drape evenly across your subject, like you can see here with my dog Kodak after a long walk through a local park.

Tips for photographing in the shade:

• If it is sunny outside, look for the side of a building on the opposite side of the sun. The light in the shade will still be very bright, but will allow you to photograph in an evenly-lit environment. Be sure to keep both your subject and entire background completely in the shade for a well-balanced exposure.

• If you can’t find shade, then CREATE your own! Use a piece of cardboard, a fancy reflector, or even your own body (if photographing something small) to block the light.

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 8: “Play”

Brian and I recently adopted a puppy, Simon, and he sure is a handful! One of our favorite things to do is sit on the back porch and watch him rumble around with our 3-year old shepherd mix, Kodak. And, like any good photographer, I also enjoy photographing them! I caught Simon mid-play as he was rolling around on the ground, and couldn’t resist this crazy expression on his face. :)

Photography tips:

• The word “play” could have many different interpretations. Maybe it’s your children running in the grass, a soccer match, or a chess game in a city park. Get creative and “play” with your ideas!

• If you are photogrpahing something that is fast-moving, like children or puppies, be sure to use a fast shutter speed (such as 1/500 sec or 1/1000 sec).

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 7: “Summer”

When I think of summer, feelings of hot weather come to mind. And anyone who knows me know how much I love to stay cool! Rafting and swimming are two ways to quickly cool off, and so just looking at this photo of rafters on a chilly, mountain-water stream cools me down quite a bit.

Tips for summer photos:

• What does summer mean to you? Maybe it’s a certain food that comes to mind, or an activity or event that you enjoy. Use your creativity and see what you can come up with!

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 6: “Farmer’s Market”

One of my favorite things to do on Saturdays is to visit the Farmer’s Market in my neighborhood here in Portland, Oregon. I almost always bring my camera, as there is nothing more beautiful that fresh, ripe, and local fruits and vegetables. Oftentimes I not only come home with great photos, but also have a bag filled to the brim with groceries for the next few days.

Tips for photographing at markets:

• Try and get to the market as early as possible. Not only will there be more variety and quantity of produce and other items, but there will also be fewer people to maneuver around.

• Look for patterns in color and shapes. Vendors will usually create beautiful displays so use that to your advantage!

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 5: “Texture”

I am a huge sucker for textures. Sometimes I find myself photographing them to add to my “texture” collection in Lightroom, and other times I am using those textures to blend over a photograph, like I did here with this composite of a branch of cherry blossom flowers from earlier in the Spring. The grunge from the texture adds a nice and beautiful contrast to the soft, delicate flowers.

Tips for photographing and adding textures:

• To photograph a texture for use as an overlay, try to keep your camera parallel with the surface you are photographing so that the entire texture is in focus.

• To create a good photo to blend a texture over, make sure that it has a neutral, simple background. A gray tone (as opposed to something too bright or too dark) will help absorb the texture well.

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 4: “Blur”

One of my favorite camera techniques is to use a long exposure to blur water. It adds a very surreal and soft element to a beach scene, and can help add an element of simplicity and minimalism to a photograph as well. While on the Big Island of Hawaii, I went to the Punalu’u Black Sands Beach to photograph the sea turtles. They are resting on the shore and even stayed still long enough for me to get this 10-second exposure.

Tips for creating blurry photos:

• To create an image with a blurry background, set your aperture to a very wide setting (which, in turn, would be a very low number, such as f/2.8). Focus on something close to the lens and make sure that the background is very far away to get the most blur.

• To create a blurred movement, you will want to have a slow shutter speed (such as 1/15 or1/30 sec)... more »

• To blur water, you will need a tripod and maybe even a neutral density filter. Find a stream, waterfall, or any water that is moving and try and create an exposure for several seconds. It’s best to do this when the light is low in the sky, such as at sunrise or sunset, or on a cloudy and overcast day.

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 3: “Water”

While photographing at the beach in San Diego a few months back, I was hoping to get a nice, beautiful sunset over the water. Unfortunately there were no clouds in the sky to add color, so instead I focused my camera on the people on the beach! This little boy was waiting for the waves to come in just right so he could catch one back to the shore.

Tips for photographing water:

• Get creative with the theme! If you are not near any bodies of water, look for man-made elements, such as fountains or swimming pools. Even the hose in a backyard can make for a fun photography experiment!

• To freeze water, use a fast shutter speed (such as 1/1000 sec or higher). To blur water, put your camera on a tripod and keep the shutter open for a long time (several seconds will do!).

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 2: “Flower”

I know, I know, flowers are “so” cliche. :) But hey, they sure are beautiful! After all, why else would there be so many photographs of them. In fact, I sometimes travel to certain locations, or seek out scenes along the road, where the flowers are in full bloom. These lupines in Iceland are a perfect example of how gorgeous and simple a field of flowers can be.

Flower photo tips:

• Watch your background! It’s easy to get absorbed in the subject (in this case, a flower), but don’t forget that what is behind the flower is just as important. A simple, clean background will make your flower stand out. You can also play around with your aperture and try using shallow depth of field (such as an aperture set to f/2.8) to blur the background.

• If you have a macro lens, this is a great opportunity to use it! Get close and photograph details, and maybe even keep an eye out for ladybugs or bees fluttering around.

• Find or create a shady spot for even light across the flower. Or, wait until about an hour before sunset where the light is soft. Harsh sunlight can add hot-spots and ugly shadows to your photos.

#StayOutThere Challenge, Day 1: “Sky”

When I traveled to Iceland I was most excited to see the midnight sun, where the sun never fully sets in the summertime. Because of this, there are amazing skies for several hours on end, and it is truly a photographer’s paradise!

Tips for photographing skies:

• Try to photograph just after sunrise, or right before sunset, when the light is best.

• If you have an amazing sky, don’t forget to include an interesting foreground! City skylines, trees, or even a simple pasture can work wonders for a sunset photograph.

• To get an even exposure when the sky is too bright for the foreground, try bracketing your shot and then merge the photos together using HDR. It’s best to use a tripod for this technique.
