Hugo van der Merwe450My Pages circleMy G+ Home stream is pretty overwhelming, it would not be possible to read everything if I hadn't significantly dialled down some circles. I can and do read everything in my "Friends" circle, not too hard as many people aren't very active. ;) (I also limit my "Friends" circle to fewer than 100 people: I have an Acquaintances circle dialled down to the recommended "most posts", rather than "every post").A large portion of my Home stream consists of news-related posts from pages, with a good dose of geek and personal interests mixed in. I have a couple of non-overlapping circles that I use specifically for pages. A "Google Pages" circle contains, you guessed it, a whole bunch of Google pages. I also have a plain "Pages" circle which doesn't contain Google pages. In fact, here I'm sharing my "Pages" circle, for what it's worth. It is not particularly well curated, it's a mixed-value bag, but some of the pages in this circle are highly recommended! ;) What are your favourite pages?(BTW my pages circles are dialled down to one notch above zero, i.e.: "Show some posts from Pages in your Home stream".)2012-11-08 21:45:1932300CC G+

Drew Woods1,371So I've been working on a NEWS Stream. I don't particularly have a fondness for ANY one particular kind of news, though when I'm on my phone and on my way to work, I like to see some heading and pictures, and so far, I like the way +Google+ shows each post. I wish Google Reader did it like that or I would just stick with my reader, but it only shows text. And I'm sorry, I don't always judge a book by it's cover, but dammit, it draws my attention more easily. HOWEVER it's not complete. If you know any online news sources I don't have or just any decent Pages with great articles, please make suggestions in the comments. I will re-share my final Circle when it is complete. 2012-08-15 13:26:1613101CC G+

Wreckage Offers Clues on Why Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 Went Down http://nyti.ms/1lo6P6E

Photographs of a piece of wreckage found by two reporters for The New York Times and analyzed by Reed Foster, a defense analyst with IHS Jane’s, offers some clues about what could have caused Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 to crash. While it is impossible from the photographs to determine that a specific missile was used, Mr. Foster said, the damage is consistent with the effects of a fragmentary warhead carried by an SA-11, the type of missile that American officials have said was most likely behind the attack.

Leading AIDS Researcher Killed in Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 Crash http://nyti.ms/1zRd0df

Dr. Joep Lange, a leading AIDS researcher, is presumed dead in the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was apparently shot down over Ukraine, according to a statement issued on Friday by the University of Amsterdam, where he was a professor of medicine.

He was among “a number” of AIDS researchers, health officials and activists thought to have been aboard the flight, the International AIDS Society said Friday. They were en route to the International AIDS Conference, scheduled to begin Sunday in Melbourne, Australia. He was accompanied by his longtime companion, Jacqueline van Tongeren.

Obama Says Plane Was Shot Down From Rebel-Held Ukraine Area http://nyti.ms/1zRcKLn

President Obama said Friday that the United States believed that a Malaysian jetliner was shot down by surface-to-air missiles from an area inside Ukraine that is controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

In remarks at the White House, Mr. Obama said the nearly 300 lives taken in the plane crash were an “outrage of unspeakable proportions” and a “global tragedy.” He vowed to investigate exactly what happened to end the lives of “men, women, children, infants who had nothing to do with the crisis” in that region.

“We are going to make sure the truth is out,” Mr. Obama said.

Malaysia Jet Brought Down by Missile, U.S. Officials Say http://nyti.ms/1l9Gd9x

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with 295 people aboard was shot down on Thursday by a surface-to-air missile, U.S. officials have confirmed. The airliner was traveling at about 30,000 feet, according to the tracking information from a military spy satellite. The satellite, however, was unable to detect where exactly the missile was fired.

Military and intelligence analysts are using mathematical formulas, high-speed computers and other sensors to try to pin down the missile’s point of origin. Other analysts will work with Ukrainian authorities to recover and analyze pieces of the missile and the aircraft to help determine what kind of missile was fired, the officials said.

‘It Fell Down in Pieces’: Malaysia Airlines Plane Leaves Trail of Debris in Ukrainian Fields http://nyti.ms/1l9t6oB

Headphones and computers were scattered throughout a field of sunflowers. In another field, a Dutch passport lay open. Bodies fell from the sky, looking like rags or clumps of ash.

That was some of what residents and rescue workers saw after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 came to a jolting rest in a large wheat field dotted with purple flowers and Queen Anne’s lace, trailing debris over several miles of sparsely populated Ukrainian farmland.

“It was horrible,” said a separatist rebel who was part of the rescue crew and would give only his first name, Sergei. “We were in shock.”

Bob Hoskins, British Actor, Dies at 71 http://nyti.ms/1fQo8Ld

Bob Hoskins, the bullet-shaped British film star who brought a singular mix of charm, menace and Cockney accent to a variety of roles, including the bemused, live-action hero of the largely animated “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” has died at 71.

Mr. Hoskins, who had virtually stumbled into acting, found early acclaim as the kind of ruthless British gangster he played in 1980 in his startling breakthrough feature, “The Long Good Friday” and later in Neil Jordan’s 1986 film “Mona Lisa,” which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor. But his filmography also included more playful roles. He was the pirate Smee in two variations of “Peter Pan” — Steven Spielberg’s 1991 “Hook” and the 2011 British TV production “Neverland.” He played Cher’s unlikely love match in “Mermaids”(1990). And he voiced Charles Dicke... more »

When scientists made the stunning announcement last year that a baby born with H.I.V. had apparently been cured through aggressive drug treatment just 30 hours after birth, there was immediate skepticism that the child had ever been infected in the first place.

But on Wednesday the existence of a second such baby was revealed at an AIDS conference here, leaving little doubt that the treatment had worked. A leading researcher said there might be five more such cases in Canada and three in South Africa.

Major Changes in SAT Announced by College Board http://nyti.ms/1jS51Ut

Saying its college admission exams do not focus enough on the important academic skills, the College Board announced on Wednesday a fundamental rethinking of the SAT, eliminating obligatory essays, ending the longstanding penalty for guessing wrong and cutting obscure vocabulary words.

David Coleman, president of the College Board, criticized his own test, the SAT and its main rival, the ACT, saying that both “have become disconnected from the work of our high schools.”

In addition, Mr. Coleman announced new programs to help low-income students, who will now be given fee waivers allowing them to apply to four colleges at no charge. And even before the new exam starts, the College Board, in partnership with Khan Academy, will offer free online practice problems from old tests and instructionalvide... more »

Kerry Kennedy Is Found Not Guilty of Driving While Impaired http://nyti.ms/1hZ5J4R

After nearly 20 months of buildup, the misdemeanor trial of Kerry Kennedy ended on Friday in a breakneck blur, as jurors took less than two hours to find her not guilty of driving under the influence of a drug.

The four-day trial, which featured a riveting turn on the witness stand by Ms. Kennedy, 54, was centered on an act that neither she nor prosecutors dispute: On July 13, 2012, she drove her Lexus S.U.V. erratically after swallowing Zolpidem, a generic form of the sleep medication Ambien. She sideswiped a tractor-trailer on a highway in Westchester County before she was found, slumped over her sleeping wheel, her car stalled on a local road. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1hZ5J4R

Despite Rifts, G.O.P. Has Election Edge, Poll Finds http://nyti.ms/1hUX2IO

Republicans are in a stronger position than Democrats for this year’s midterm elections, benefiting from the support of self-described independents, even though the party itself is deeply divided and most Americans agree more with Democratic policy positions, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll shows.

The independents in the poll — a majority of whom were white, male and under age 45 — continued to sour on President Obama’s job performance. Republicans hold their edge despite the fissures within their party over whether it is too conservative, and many are discouraged about the party’s future. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1hUX2IO

Texas Judge Strikes Down State Ban on Same-Sex Marriage http://nyti.ms/1hzEGZo

federal judge in Texas struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage on Wednesday, ruling that the laws restricting marriage to a man and a woman violated the United States Constitution, handing gay rights advocates a major legal victory in one of the biggest and most conservative states in the country.

The judge wrote that the amendment to the state Constitution that Texas voters approved in 2005 defining marriage as between a man and a woman — and two similar laws passed in 1997 and 2003 — denied gay couples the right to marry and demeaned their dignity “for no legitimate reason.” Read more: http://nyti.ms/1hzEGZo

Obesity Rate for Young Children Plummets 43% in a Decade http://nyti.ms/1hvmm3x

Federal health authorities on Tuesday reported a stunning 43 percent drop in the obesity rate among 2- to 5-year-old children over the past decade, the first broad decline in an epidemic that often leads to lifelong struggles with weight and higher risks for cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The drop emerged from a major federal health survey that experts say is the gold standard for evidence on what Americans weigh. The trend came as a welcome surprise to researchers. New evidence has shown that obesity takes hold young: Children who are overweight or obese between age 3 and 5 are five times as likely to be overweight or obese as adults. Canada Defeats U.S. in Men’s Hockey Semifinal http://nyti.ms/1h6eOFo

Canada is headed to the men’s hockey final, where it will seek its ninth Olympic gold medal in the event, after a relatively easy 1-0 victory over the United States on Friday night at the Sochi Games.

Canada will play Sweden, a 2-1 victor over Finland in the other semifinal, on Sunday for the gold medal. The loser will be awarded silver. The United States and Finland will play for the bronze on Saturday.

Canada scored the lone goal early in the second period when Jamie Benn redirected a shot by Jay Bouwmeester. Benn had flipped the puck back to his teammate atop the faceoff circle, then wandered toward the net and made the deflection, past American goaltender Jonathan Quick. Accord Is Signed in Ukraine but Doubts Are Strong http://nyti.ms/1cybXUL

The embattled president of Ukraine and leaders of the opposition signed a political deal on Friday aimed at ending a spiral of lethal violence with early elections and a reduction in presidential powers, but Russia declined to endorse the accord, and many protesters said nothing short of the president’s resignation would get them off the street.

In a further sign of President Viktor F. Yanukovych’s diminished influence, the Ukrainian Parliament voted to allow the release of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been imprisoned for more than two years. The Loyal Users of Google Plus Say It Is No Ghost Town http://nyti.ms/1hvH5IM

A front-page article last weekend called Google Plus a ghost town. Since then, dozens of the very passionate ghosts who hang out there have let me know that, in fact, it is a lively, conversation-filled place that is unlike any other Internet social network.

My article said that even though Google Plus had just a fraction of the active users that Facebook had, it served another important purpose for Google — providing a single log-in for all Google products and a broader view of users’ digital lives, even if people who signed up never returned to the social network.

But for some users, it also provides a rich social networking experience, especially for people interested in photography, video chats, in-depth online conversations and meeting people they don’t know who have similarinter... more »

It’s Snack Time in the Cosmos http://nyti.ms/1bIhmKZ

Black holes, the ultradense collapsed objects predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity, are often depicted as voracious feeders whose extraordinary gravity acts like a one-way membrane: Everything is sucked in, even light, and virtually nothing leaks out.

Now, for the first time, astronomers may have a chance to watch as a giant black hole consumes a cosmic snack.

In March or April, a gas cloud that has been hurtling toward the center of the Milky Way is expected to collide with Sagittarius A*, a black hole that lies just 26,000 light-years from Earth. (The actual event, of course, took place 26,000 years ago.)

The Plus in Google Plus? It’s Mostly for Google http://nyti.ms/1dwpoFs

Google Plus may not be much of a competitor to Facebook as a social network, but it is central to Google’s future — a lens that allows the company to peer more broadly into people’s digital life, and to gather an ever-richer trove of the personal information that advertisers covet. Some analysts even say that Google understands more about people’s social activity than Facebook does.

The reason is that once you sign up for Plus, it becomes your account for all Google products, from Gmail to YouTube to maps, so Google sees who you are and what you do across its services, even if you never once return to the social network itself.

Before Google released Plus, the company might not have known that you were the same person when you searched, watched videos and used maps. With a single Plusaccount, ... more »

How to Be a Better Valentine, Through Economics http://nyti.ms/1nyPqsI

Paul Oyer a professor of economics as Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, writes:

Economics can tell us how to make Valentine’s Day special for our significant others. We economists may have taken all the fun out of Christmas, but I think we can make Valentine’s Day more successful. Here’s how. First, figure out how to signal to your mate that you really care about him or her. Second, if you want to give your mate a great Valentine’s present, spend money on yourself. Finally, one great gift is to stop hoping for perfection in your mate and, in the words of Stephen Stills, “love the one you’re with.”

As Michael Sam, a defensive lineman, began to speak, he balled up a piece of paper in his hands. “I’m gay,” he said. With that, Mr. Sam set himself on a path to become the first publicly gay player in the National Football League.

Senator Pat Roberts Races to Renew Ties, if Not Make a Home, in Kansas http://nyti.ms/1d3dK4X

In an interview, the three-term senator acknowledged that he did not have a home of his own in Kansas. The house on a country club golf course that Pat Roberts lists as his voting address belongs to two longtime supporters and donors — C. Duane and Phyllis Ross — and he says he stays with them when he is in the area. He established his voting address there the day before his challenger, Milton Wolf, announced his candidacy last fall, arguing that Mr. Roberts was out of touch with his High Plains roots.

“I have full access to the recliner,” the senator joked. Turning serious, he added, “Nobody knows the state better than I do.”

That assertion would be disputed by Tea Party activists energized by Mr. Wolf’s candidacy. Read more: http://nyti.ms/1d3dK4X
