On Top of the World
My wife, Linda, taking a picture, and some random tourist behind her at Badlands National Park
South Dakota, USA
Road trip complete. 14 Days, 4,804 miles (about 7,780 kilometers); Nine National Parks/Monuments; Three State Parks; lots and lots of gasoline and sandwiches; and about 3,000 RAW images to look through. Great, restorative trip. I could easily travel full time, but who would pay me to do that?
Thanks to all who looked and commented on my iPhone images .... and sorry I had such limited ability to interact, with just an iPhone, occasional 4G, and even more occasional WiFi!

From the Road
Ridge with cell tower and the ubiquitous puffy clouds. This is in northern New Mexico, on the road to Durango Colorado. Mesa Verde today - the cliff dwellings are amazing. And they have a cafe with Starbucks and wifi!

Special Delivery
If this looks like a UPS truck in the middle of nowhere, that's exactly what it is. This is in Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The driver told us he was delivering the truck itself to an office further west, and made the side trip to cure his boredom of the interstate!

Sweep Away
The view from the State Capitol campus, out over Capitol Lake, the Olympia harbor (Budd Inlet), and the Olympic Mountains in the distance.
A little more testing with the rental 10-22mm. I've found so far that it's sharpest at F11 ... more tests today, and then on the road tomorrow! Woo Hoo!

Semi-Low Budget Landscape Rig
Here's my little ole T3i on my new Dolica ball head tripod, and a rented Canon 10-22mm EF S lens. The lens just came in today from Borrow Lenses. Great service from that crew! I'll process these shots tonight and get an idea of how the lens will work on my upcoming road trip!

Yes, a third flower photo in a row from me - but I couldn't resist these orange Gerbera's my wife brought home yesterday! The fence pot thing seemed like a good one for +Natosha Davis and #onthefencewednesday (for which theme I've been woefully neglectful lately).

Good News - Bad News
Or ... why is Mark posting a cat picture
Instead of a dog picture
This is Neville - or Monster, as my daughter calls him. And this is him earlier today feeling quite at home again, on the table, in the middle of everything. Neville is happy because he has his house back, after he and his partner Norbert the Grey (another barn cat we liberated a couple years ago) spent 8 days hiding under our bed.
Spencer the rescue dog just never came to terms with the cats - he relentlessly pursued them if we let him near the bedroom, and they happened to be out. We ended up with barricades in the kitchen/dining room to keep him away from the cats - and that was no way for any of us to live. So, after several phone conversations with the foster rescue person, and the animal shelter staff, we took him back yesterday to the shelter. They were certain he would ... more »

October Blue
This was taken at the train station in Santa Fe, New Mexico, last October. Given our record rain here in the Seattle area this month, I for one, can use a reminder of blue skies and bright colors!

Spencer
Meet Spencer, our new rescue dog we got from the local animal shelter. We picked him up Friday from a "foster parent" volunteer where he's been cared for as he did not do well in the shelter itself. Spence is about two, and is a Lab/Border Collie mix. He is very athletic and fast and craves non stop action. But, he settles down once worn out and is very sweet and affectionate.
So training and taking care of Spencer dominated my weekend! But it sure is great to rescue a cool dog that was otherwise not going to survive!

Can We Talk?
Fort Worden Lighthouse, Port Townsend, WA
About lenses that is. We're taking a road trip soon, and will be hitting some big landscapes in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. I like me some big landscapes. Well now, I like my old Nikkor lenses I use with my lowly T3i - a 50mm F1.4 and a 135mm F2.8. But, the only wide angle I've got is my Canon 18-55mm kit lens. Hummmm. I'm obsessing over a "better" wide angle.
I've looked a lot at the Canon 17-40mm L, and yesterday spent an hour at Glazer's in Seattle looking at everything, including the Canon 14mm L (yikes - $2400) and a used Tamron 14mm SP F2.8 (only $450). One thing that bugs me about the 18-55 is the chromatic aberration (CA) - it can be bad with high contrast vertical borders especially. Like the edges on this here lighthouse tower. I had not done... more »

Trillium
This one's for +Marilou Aballe, who I'm glad to see back around G+ these days. Trillium bloom for a short time in the woods around here, and are perennials that don't do very well when disturbed. I've never seen them cultivated anywhere - just out in the wild. And today, they had this lovely translucence from the rain. Hope you like them, Marilou!
