My previous attempt at getting back in the G+ swing of things fell a bit short, so I'm going to try again!  I've been incredibly and thankfully busy the last few months and it appears that it will continue, but I am going to try to jump over here from time to time to see how everyone is doing and to view the incredible work that is shared. 

This is an older image from a couple summers ago that I ran across while selecting images for an upcoming publication.  Bear Rocks Preserve in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area of West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest is such a special place, and I particularly enjoy photographing here at sunrise.

Lindy Point in West Virginia's Blackwater Falls State Park offers amazing views from several vantage points. I was blessed with some pretty sweet light and cloud action on this particular early October evening.

Brush Creek Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in West Virginia and one that in the past, I found a little difficult to achieve the results I wanted.  There is a large splash pool and not much in the way of foreground interest from the trail side of the falls, so over the last few years I've waded across the stream for more favorable and unique perspectives of this heavily visited waterfall.  Thanks for taking a look, your visits and comments are much appreciated.  Have a great day!

Early morning light from Bear Rocks Preserve, a most fascinating place in the Dolly Sods Wilderness area of West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest. On this particular day (10.4.12) I had hoped to witness yet another amazing sunrise; I never did see the sun that morning, but was more than happy to capture the incredible cloud action and the magnificent fall foliage. I've struggled getting images of this waterfall that I really like, but a few weeks ago I managed to get there when conditions were just about perfect. I had a blast working all the different angles and thought I'd share this one.  BTW, this river is extremely popular with the kayakers and they have dubbed this drop "Gluteous Mash" . . . have a great day and thanks so much for the visits and comments!

This is just one of who knows how many waterfalls in Fall Branch Canyon, located in West Virginia's New River Gorge. This little canyon quickly became a favorite place to explore and even with several creek crossings, the hiking is easy and the scenery remarkable. Spring through fall the forest floor is covered by a variety of wildflowers and it's not uncommon to see deer and other wildlife. But, the highlight for me are the numerous waterfalls, on Fall Branch as well as on several side streams I've explored. Looking forward to going back and finding some more! After numerous visits I was finally met with some pretty sweet conditions for a sunrise shoot at Grandview - formally a West Virginia State Park, but now part of the New River Gorge National River.  From the pre dawn glow to well after the sunrise, I took several hundred images, and I randomly selected this one to work on first.  Basically a very quick edit until I have time to take a look at all of the images from that incredible morning . . . have a great day, everyone, hope to catch up with you soon!

Keeneys Creek in West Virginia's New River Gorge is a wonderful little mountain stream with dozens of small waterfalls and cascades.  This little jewel is one of my favorites and I've photographed it in all seasons and from just about every possible angle.  I had hoped to capture the rhododendron in bloom, but I was too late, so I decided I'd highlight the fern growing on the downed tree in the foreground.  This was taken on a great day with my good friends +Sarah Hampton and +Michael Hensley and new friends +Juan Pons and +Art Howard.  Have a great day, everyone!

Getting ready for a photo trip to Kentucky's Red River Gorge Geological Area with some great friends and photographers. I highly doubt that we'll find much in the way of nicely flowing waterfalls, but we are definitely going to see some incredible scenery. The intricate canyon system we will be exploring features an abundance of high sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, and over 100 natural arches. Thought I'd share an image from my last Kentucky photo trip. This is Eagle Falls located in the Daniel Boone National Forest near Cumberland Falls State Park. Several photographers that I admire and follow on G+ such as +QT Luong, +Ivan Makarov, +Jay Patel, +Patrick Smith and +Mike Spinak  have been sharing some #earlyphotos  and I've really enjoyed viewing their work along with the images from all the other photographers that are sharing to this theme.  I thought I'd throw one in there as well; this is a film scan from back in the late '90's of Mash Fork Falls in West Virginia's Camp Creek State Park.  This was taken with a Canon EOS Elan II that replaced the trusty Pentax K1000 that my parents gave me as one of my high school graduation presents back in '82.  Have a great day everyone, and be sure to check out all the great images being shared in the #earlyphotos  theme!

West Virginia's Blackwater Falls in Blackwater Falls State Park is one of, if not the most photographed waterfall in the state. And it's no wonder, as it is a magnificent sight to behold. Two viewing platforms on either side of the canyon offer terrific vantage points to photograph from, but to get this rare river level view, one must scramble down into the deep canyon. The little waterfalls need some love too and on a recent hike w/ my good friends +Sarah Hampton  and +Todd Williams, we all spent some time photographing this little beauty. The Big Branch Trail offers tons of photo opportunities and I highly recommend this hike from early spring through late spring; five waterfalls are on Big Branch and the trail is home to countless varieties of wildflowers. 2,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ Wrap Up Post

Over the course of the past year I’ve immensely enjoyed the photographic community on Google+. As I’ve met new photographers and new members I’ve maintained a circle with some of the photographers that I’ve most enjoyed following. When you make a circle or a list like this you always leave some people out. This is the downside to sharing a circle like this. For the 2,000 that you include, there are 50,000 that you exclude. Hopefully some of these people will be folks that I can reshare when this circle hits 2,500.

Lower Falls of Hills Creek
Monongahela National Forest
West Virginia

It was great to be able to get back down to the Lower Falls of Hills Creek to view this magnificent waterfall. A year or so ago, heavy winds ripped through the area and downed several trees and in the process, destroyed sections of the elaborate boardwalk/stairway system leading to this waterfall. Many thanks to the folks with the Monongahela National Forest for getting the boardwalk and stairs repaired so we can again enjoy this special place.
 
I normally shoot from unique vantage points here, but with the waterflow rather heavy, I would have been inundated w/ spray, so I just opted to stick with the standard views from the boardwalk. Thanks for looking, your visits and comments are very much appreciated! Have a great day!

I wanted to share an image of my favorite WV waterfall again. This time from my most recent trip a few weeks ago. There had been a lot of rainfall prior to my arrival, and although I prefer to photograph Douglas Falls w/ less waterflow, it was kind of neat to see, hear and feel all that water falling over the ledge and racing past me as it flowed downstream.

Spent a wonderful foggy morning last week photographing the majestic Sandstone Falls.  Eventually, the sun burned through the fog so I switched from the wide angle lens to the macro lens and really enjoyed finding some really cool flowers and bugs to photograph.  This beautiful flower was blooming in several different area and I think it is a spiderwort . . . please correct me if this ID is wrong!  With +Sarah Hampton, +Michael Hensley, +Art Howard and +Juan Pons.  Have a great day, everyone!

I was fortunate this week to shoot in the New River Gorge with some great old friends +Randall Sanger and +Sarah Hampton and 2 wonderful new friends +Juan Pons and +Art Howard .We spent a few days shooting waterfalls and, of course, I found a few bugs to play with. Here is a group shot taken just before we all went our separate ways.

I'm back home after spending a few days traipsing about West Virginia's New River Gorge area w/ +Sarah Hampton and +Michael Hensley. We had the privilage to showcase this portion of our beautiful state to +Juan Pons and +Art Howard - not only are they both awesome photographers, but they are great guys as well.

Although I spent some time exploring for additional waterfalls in the Potomac Highlands Region last week, I still took the time to photograph my favorite waterfall of the four on Shay's Run. This is a popular waterfall and I probably have hundreds of images from here, but I can't help but visit it each time I'm in the area.

There was so much rain during the first part of the week that I didn't even bother, knowing that this beautiful waterfall would look more like a muddy rapid, but by weeks end, the water was flowing quite nicely. Still kind of crazy around here, trying to catch up after being gone for a week of waterfall chasing, but I just had to post an image for +Eric Leslie's #WaterfallWednesday ! Campbell Falls

Camp Creek is one of my favorite creeks to photograph and I'm always looking for alternative views of this quite popular waterfall. During a recent visit w/ my friends from the Ohio Valley Camera Club, I found the light sweet and the waterflow perfect; it was so much fun working this beautiful stream and waterfall again.

Sandstone Falls

I had an incredible weekend in the Sandstone Falls area of West Virginia's New River Gorge w/ the great folks of Huntington's Ohio Valley Camera Club.

Much time was spent photographing the majestic Sandstone Falls from what I call "The Point" - an area that gives one an up close and personal view of the middle section of the falls. During lower water conditions, the journey out to The Point is relatively easy, but we encountered high water levels and had to wade through several side channels in water that was thigh deep in places, and with extremely slippery rocks underfoot. Those of us that made the trek came through without taking any dives and were rewarded w/ amazing views and images.

Big Branch
New River Gorge

Getting ready for a weekend in West Virginia's New River Gorge and with all the recent rain, the streams will really be kicking! I'll definitely be hiking the Big Branch trail and checking out the five waterfalls that are on this beautiful little mountain stream.
