If you get a notification that I've added you on G+, it's probably from my new Work-related account. I'm testing G+ Pages over there and recreating my connections there. I won't duplicate on either account, so no worries, but you may want to add me from the jason- @ -socialmediaexplorer.com account rather than this one.

+Louis Gray describes the new Google Reader interface changes. So far, I only dislike the fact there's no more shared items. Lots of people had some automated functionality tied to that. Now it's just gone. Grrr. But the changes are fine otherwise to me.

Spent the day with a special group of marketers in Louisville - General Electric, UPS, Louisville Gas & Electric/Kentucky Utilities, University of Louisville, Churchill Downs, Humana, Greater Louisville Inc. (Chamber of Commerce) and Brown-Foreman (Spirits). They're all doing unique and good work with social and digital. But the same types of questions and concerns keep arising, even with larger companies: permissions and control for employees, policies, breaking down silos internally, measuring success.
I told them I think we're probably starting to move out of the sandbox and treat social media strategically. Many here are doing just that in certain regards, but we could all do more focused strategies.
What about the companies you've seen or worked with? Same? More progressive? Less?
We're graduating from tactical focus to strategic focus, at least in... more »

As I work with +David Yeiser on the new user experience for Social Media Explorer's website, I feel compelled to reassure all of you that there is absolutely great value in investing in good design. If anything, I feel confident and comfortable my site is going to look and behave in awesome ways for people. The best designers will never be cheap, but damn are they almost always worth the money.

The next time you see some one or some company with some "research" or "science" around social media, ask yourself where they get their data. If they are looking at their own users or followers or behavior, that's not research. That's an example. If your product or service differs from theirs, the data won't always apply to you. It might be intriguing. It might be insightful. But it's not science and it's not gospel.

It's amazing how many people share posts with individual people on Google+ ... and almost as amazing is how many of the posts are completely uninteresting or relevant to them. If you share a post with someone (namely me) please make sure there's an obvious reason why. Otherwise, I'll consider your sharing the post with me spam and ignore you.
I'm shocked we have to explain this to people. Grrrrr.
