Galapagos Islands 2013

I'm just back from a week on (and between) the Galapagos Islands.  It was an expensive endeavour but totally worth it.  A once-in-a-lifetime experience and heaven for a photographer!

Cerro Torre, Patagonia, Argentina

A few days ago I returned from a trek through Patagonia's Parque nacional Los Glaciares.  One of the highlights was camping at Cerro Torre's base camp at Lago Torre.  This picture was taken at 10:30pm, just after the sun had set.  The days are long (and the nights still cold) this time of year in Patagonia...

On the road to El Chalten, Patagonia, Argentina

A couple days ago I travelled to El Chalten which is the access town to the Cerro Torre/Cerro Fitz Roy range.  The weather was amazing.  I took this photo from the moving bus with my camera dangling over the drivers head.  Quite dangerous as the bus driver seemed to be in a hurry and was driving very "dynamic" and I nearly fell into his gear lever...

The spiky mountain in the center is Cerro Torre and the fat mountain on the right is Cerro Fitz Roy.

Iguazu Falls, Brazil/Argentina

This is a photo of a part of the Iguazu Falls at the border between Brazil and Argentina (and close to Paraguay too).  The falls have a width of over 2.5 km, are up to 60m high and make for a number of interesting strolls.  I have never seen so much falling water in my life -- what a spectacle!

This was nearly a month ago.  I've since moved via Buenos Aires to Patagonia.  I'm slow catching up on photos...

Rio de Janeiro from Sugarloaf Mountain (396 m), Brazil

I'm currently travelling through South America.  My first stop was Rio de Janeiro, a fascinating city, where I spent 5 days, doing the touristy stuff, visiting a Favela, hanging out at the beach, and so on.

For this shot I had to wait 3 days as Sugarloaf Mountain was always in the clouds during sunset.  But on the fourth day I got lucky and enjoyed a great sunset with very few people on top.

You can see Copacabana beach on the left. The mountain in the foreground is Morro da Urca (measly 200 m high), where one has to change the cable car.  On the right, peeking through the clouds, is the illuminated statue Cristo Redentor which I was visiting earlier that day by a cog railway.

Artesonraju (6025 m), Cordillera Blanca, Peru

I shot this photo of Artesonraju, supposedly the mountain in the Paramount Pictures logo, at sunset after a very long and tiring day in which we climbed Alpamayo and hiked al the way to the base camp down in the valley.

French Direct Route up Alpamayo, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

This is a close up shot of some climbers in the French Direct route up Alpamayo's south east face.  The chute is about 500m high and goes straight from the bergschrund to the summit.  The steepness is about 45-50 degrees so not quite as steep as it might appear on this photo.  When we climbed the route the next morning, we used fixed ropes to prevent somebody from falling down.

On the way to Alpamayo, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

This is probably the fourth or fifth photo with Alpamayo (5947 m) that I've been posting in the past weeks -- sorry about that!  But I think that such a magnificent mountain justifies a bit of spamming...

It looks like these guys are descending but in fact they are negotiating their way up the glacier to Alpamayo high camp.  What a fun glacier and what great weather we had!  The weather was like this almost every day during the 4 weeks trip!

Alpamayo (5947 m) at sunset, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

Be sure to click this link for the full immersive panorama experience: http://files.danielarndt.com/2012-Peru-Panoramas/pano-AlpamayoHC4/pano-AlpamayoHC4.html

This is what they call the "blue hour".  It's that special post-sunset light.  I had scouted this spot -- about 15 min uphill walk from the high camp you can see in the picture -- earlier in the day with the plan of being there for sunset.  However, the sun sets quickly in Peru and fast walking at that altitude is not an option.  So I arrived a bit late for the show...

Alpamayo base camp, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

Please go here for an immersive view: http://files.danielarndt.com/2012-Peru-Panoramas/pano-AlpamayoBC(N)2/pano-AlpamayoBC(N)2.html

This panorama was shot at the northern base camp of Alpamayo at an elevation of 4533 m.  Here, the trekking ended, the donkeys that had carried most of our equipment up to this point turned around, and we continued our trip on steeper terrain.  It would be two more days of glacier travel until we reached the high camp at the base of Alpamayo from which we set out to climb the summit.

Dusk over the Cordillera Blanca, Peru
Since Peru is so close to the equator it get's dark really fast and the "blue hour" is much shorter than that, favoring the quick photographer!  This photo was taken on an easy acclimatization climb close to the town of Huaraz.  Just getting started with night time photography, I played a bit with the settings of my camera until it got too cold.  So I headed for the tent, turned off the light, and fell asleep.

Alpamayo (5947 m), Cordillera Blanca, Peru (again)

I'm back in Switzerland after 4 weeks of climbing in the Cordillera Blanca. It's good to finally leave the dirt and the cold and the thin air behind. When I arrived in Zurich yesterday where everything is pretty and neat I felt like apologizing to passersby for my dirty appearance... The downside of being back? I already miss the occasional and delicious "Lomo al grill" that we had in Huaraz.

Alpamayo (5947 m), Cordillera Blanca, Peru

I just got back into the town of Huaraz (Peru) from a succesful climb of Alpamayo.  The whole trip took 9 days of trekking trough the beautiful Cordillera Blanca.  We ascended the mountain expedition style (fixed ropes) via the French direct route which is a 600m snow/ice gully in the middle of the face show in the picture below.

Tomorrow we`ll start a 5 day attempt to climb Huascaran (6768 m), Peru`s highest mountain.

Thanks to +***** for the photo below.  I failed to upload any of my photos so far...

Current updates of my trip are available here (in German): http://www.kobler-partner.ch/reiseberichte.html

I'm currently in the beautiful Cordillera Blanca of Peru trekking and climbing. Just got back in the town of Huaraz from a 4-day acclimatization climb of Nevado Maparaju (5326 m). Tomorrow off to Alpamayo!

The photo below was shot at sunset tonight from our hotel.

"La Jonction", Mont Blanc, Chamonix, France

These two climbers are on their way to the Grand Mulets hut in the Mont Blanc region of the French Alps. As everybody else on the way to the hut they have to cross this place, the "junction", where several glaciers meet and where, in some years, crossing is quite a hassle involving rappelling and such. Not this year! With a healthy snowpack and recent fresh snow we zipped through this area in no time and without any hoopla. Which is good since towering seracs and questionable snow bridges weren't quite inviting an extended stay!

I assume (and expect!) Herr +Wilfried Haferland will post a few more pictures of this trip soon so stay tuned for this.

Also, I'll be gone for a few weeks to visit the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. I might post some updates/photos of this trip if I get the chance.

Trekkers near Tilicho Lake in the Nepal Himalayas

During large parts of the Annapurna trekking circuit one walks at the bottom of deep valleys. This photo was taken 2 or 3 days after we had left the traditional circuit near Jomsom for a scenic "shortcut" by Tilicho Lake where we would finally enter the high Himalayan alpine.

Panorama from Mera Peak (6476 m), Solukhumbu, Nepal

Important: For a much better viewing experience go here (Flash required): http://files.danielarndt.com/2010-Nepal-Panoramas/pano-MeraPeakDescent2.html

This panorama was taken during the descent of Mera Peak just before sunset. One can see: Peak 41 (6641 m) in the center, lit by the sun. Further away are Everest (8848 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Lhotse Shar (8382 m) peaking through the clouds. Also Makalu (8462 m) (partially in the clouds) and Chamlang (7321 m).

The goal of our group was to reach the base camp on that day. Since I arrived somewhat early I continued up the peak to have a look around. While technically easy (there is a well marked trail up the glacier) I really had to hurry to make it down before dark which didn't quit work out... Thank God for my headlamp!

Ski tour to Chli Bielenhorn (2940 m), Switzerland

The trip to Chli Bielenhorn as a popular, fun, and easy ski tour in central Switzerland. I believe I've been up there at least 3 times. The summit is a small rock pinnacle that requires perhaps 5m of climbing. Not always an easy task!

The person in the photo is a usual suspect, Mr +Wilfried Haferland.

Mera La pass (5400 m), Solukhumbu, Nepal (360 degrees panorama)

Important: For a much better viewing experience go here (Flash required): http://files.danielarndt.com/2010-Nepal-Panoramas/pano-MeraLa.html

This is a panorama stitched from 22 photos taken near Mear La pass in the Everest region of Nepal. That's very near the base camp for the climb of Mera Peak (6476 m) which is, I believe, the highest of the official trekking peaks in Nepal. Visible in the panorama are also Kusum Khangkaru (6370 m) and Kyashar/Tangtse (6770 m).

Besides the great views, what impressed me the most on this day was the work of the porters. Many of them were poorly equipped for glacier travel and didn't have proper mountain boots with crampons. Instead, they had to tie some rope around their sneakers to get some traction in the snow and ice...

High up in the Peruvian Cordillera Blanca

This photo was taken at Tocllaraju glacier camp, one of the most beautiful places I have ever pitched my tent... The guy in the photo, a Peruvian mountain guide, had been here many times and he sure knew where to get the best panoramic view at Ranrapalca (6162 m) and Tocllaraju (6032 m) which was the objective for the next day.

Eldorado Peak (8876 ft)

This photo was shot from the top of Eldorado Peak in North Cascades National Park way back in 2003 when I was just getting into mountaineering. We had ascended to high camp on the glacier and after setting up the tents went to "check out the climb". But soon we decided to just "go for it". We summited by sunset which provided great light for taking photos. However, stumbling back down over the glacier, seeing crevasses in the last moment, we barely found the tents. Luckily we had placed a few wands on the glacier.

Sunrise over Tengboche, Solukhumbu, Nepal

We had gotten up early to attend a ceremony at Tengboche Monastery. While we waited I shot this photo of Mount Everest, Nuptse, and Lhotse hit by the first sun light.

Island Peak (6189 m), Solukhumbu, Nepal

This was on the descend from Island Peak. We had summited earlier this morning and enjoyed fantastic views from the top at several 8000m peaks like the nearby Lhotse and Lhotse Shar, and Makalu which can be seen peaking through the crevasses on this photo.

Everybody was exhausted when we had to climb this last chunk of ice on the descend. While we were roped together on the ascend nobody bothered anymore. The crevasses are huge, yes, but they are not exactly "hidden" either...

"Mind the gap!" Grosser Drusenturm (2830 m), Austria/Switzerland

Yesterday I went on a great ski tour with Mr +Wilfried Haferland up this mountain at the Austria-Swiss border. The weather was gorgeous and the snow fantastic! And I got to play with a new lens for my Canon 500D, the Canon EF-S 10-22 mm. So far I'm very pleased.

Top of Jungfrau (4158 m), Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

The Jungfrau is one of the main summits in the Bernese Alps and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch protected area which is a UNESCO world nature heritage site.

This panorama photo was shot from the summit a few years ago. On the left site is the 23km long Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps.

Ready for lunch?

In 2010 I went trekking in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. Here we are in the Inkhu Khola valley at an elevation of around 4000 m on our way toward Mera Peak (6476 m) which we would climb a few days later. The primitive hut in the picture was used as a makeshift kitchen by our crew. The peak in the background is Kyashar/Tangtse (6770 m).

Mittelwalder Klettersteig (via ferrata), Germany/Austria

This is a beautiful via ferrata right on the border between Germany and Austria. Easy in the summer but pretty challenging during the winter when many of the installed steel cables are deeply buried in snow.

Climber overlooking Breithorn (4164 m), Zermatt, Switzerland

This shot of Breithorn was taken just after we had arrived at Gandegg hut. There was lots of fresh snow on the ground and we were contemplating if we should still try to climb the mountain the next day via the Triftjigrat ridge. We did, breaking trail was exhausting, we were the only climbers on the route, and it was awesome!

Climbers on the Arete de Rochefort, Chamonix, France

This was from a climb of Aiguille de Rochefort I did with +Wilfried Haferland last year. The mountain is soso, not very spectacular and with 4001 m barely a 4000m peak. But the ascend via the famous ridge, the Arete de Rochefort, is spectacular (and quite scary, actually)!

Porters in Nepal

This photo was taken on our descend from Tilicho lake (supposedly the world's highest lake) in the Annapurna region of Nepal. The trail meanders through beautiful rock formations and is very narrow and quite exposed at times. Yet our porters negotiated it remarkably well while carrying these incredible loads... Without these silent heros most of the high altitude trekkings and expeditions in Nepal wouldn't be possible.

Seattle Skyline from Kerry Park

I know, I know, this has been photographed to death. However, for me this picture from 2003 holds some sentimental value: I had lived in Seattle for 5 years and took this panorama a few months before I returned to Germany. I took on Mountaineering here in the Pacific Northwest and Mount Rainier, seen in the middle, was my first 4000+ m peak.

Clouds over Zermatt
This photo is from an attempt of Obergabelhorn (4063 m) near Zermatt, Switzerland with +Wilfried Haferland this past summer. The weather forecast hadn't been great but we took off from the hut anyway. We eventually turned around at the summit of Wellenkuppe (3903 m) when we were completely enshrouded by these clouds.

This is one of my first attempts on HDR. I hope I didn't overdo it!

Mittenwalder Höhenweg (Via Ferrata), Germany

This climb, a "Via Ferrata", is typically done during the summer months. We did it during winter when the steel cables are mostly buried by snow and one needs to use a climbing rope for protection. It was a long climb and the return to town was in the dark pretty exhausting.

Piz Beverin (2997 m) from Mathon, Switzerland

Did a ski tour today with +Wilfried Haferland up this little peak. The twist? You have to descend this ladder in the middle of the ascend -- quite unique! On the descend we avoided having to go up the ladder by skiing down a steep chute with awesome powder!

Chopicalqui and Huascaran

This photo of Chopicalqui posted per request of +Harry Kikstra. Chipicalqui (6345 m) and the two peaks of Huascaran (6768 m) in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru as seen from the summit of Nevado Pisco (5752 m).

Wouldn't it be nice if all of your photos where keyworded so you could easily find a shot? Well, most of mine aren't as I only recently started to do this thanks to +Wilfried Haferland.

+Harry Kikstra : I have a few more closer shots of Chopicalqui from an attempt of the SW ridge that we had to abandon to to several people falling sick. Let me know if you need these.

Happy 2012, G+! Let's make it a good one!

Let me start the year with this photo of a sunrise over Peru's highest mountain, Huascaran (6768 m), in the Cordillera Blanca. +Jim Prager and I were climbing Nevado Pisco as an acclimatization climb and had waited out the past 2 days in bad weather at high camp. This was the first beautiful morning and we had a great summit day.

Ascending the Jungfrau (4158 m)

This was my first climb of a 4000er peak in the Alps back in 2005 after I had returned to Europe from Seattle. Incidentally, this was the same route where I had an accident last year, see my last post https://plus.google.com/u/0/103350718269700384071/posts/aHo26emMXVj Back in 2005 everything went without a hitch. A few days later we would climb Mont Blanc...

Nepal Himalayas with Dhaulagiri (8167 m)

This photo was taking on a little side trip of the popular Annapurna Trek in the Nepal Himalayas. We had arrived at camp early and I had gone a little further up for some acclimatization. I didn't get far though as I hurried down when I saw the smoke from the kitchen tent! Never miss a meal when the next day's goal is the world's highest lake, Tilicho Lake at 4949m!

Climbing Jungfrau (4158 m) in the Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps

I took this photo on a climb of the famous Jungfrau with +Joern Schellenberg two years ago. We were a bit slow and a bit late so when we climbed up some people were already on the descend. The good thing was that we had the summit to ourselves. The bad thing...it had gotten warm and while stepping over the bergshrund a snow step collapsed and I fell and hurt my knee so that I needed a helicopter rescue.

But the really really bad thing was that when I was hanging on the long line below the helicopter flying amidst all these 4000er peaks on this beautiful day that I didn't have access to my camera to take pictures! Knees heal but opportunities like this are rare...

Monte Rosa, Mt. Dufourspitze 4634m / 15204ft

#wideWednesdayPanorama, curated by +Jason Dell and +Charles Lupica.

Last April, I went to Dufourspitze with +Daniel Arndt by ski. At 4359m we left our skis back and started to climb the western ridge. Air is already quite thin at this altitude - Swiss learn already in school that Dufourspitze is the highest peak (which stands on swiss and italian ground), but we've been very well acclimatized.

The view from the summit is magnificient 'cause nothing's higher around there. In the center of this photo we see the (little) Matterhorn, left side Lyskamm, right side Weisshorn.

I'm currently travelling through Southeast Asia visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore although this is subject to change as I have no fixed plans, just (and unfortunately) a fixed return flight to Switzerland.

A not so smooth trip from Zurich to Hanoi (Nov 27 - Nov 28, 2011)

I booked a flight with Aeroflot from Zurich via Moscow to Hanoi, Vietnam. I hesitated for a short moment since I've never flown with the Russian carrier but, heck, I even speak a few words Russian, so what could go wrong? A lot, as I would find out soon!

The flight to Moscow went without a hitch and arrived in time at Sheremetyevo airport. After walking to another terminal (and crossing a few more while doing so as there is no train connecting terminals or even moving walkways) I made the other flight in time but was denied boarding - no reason mentioned! As it turned out, I wasn't... more »

This trip to Mont Blanc near Chamonix, France back in 2007 was quite a disaster: With a late start on the first day we barely made it off Tour Ronde before nightfall. On the next day we got caught in lightning on the Glacier du Geant. We eventually made it to the hut just to be trapped there for another day by the snow storm (in August!). When the clouds finally cleared our time was up and we had to drive home.
Luckily, since this trip in 2007 I have been back to the area a few times with much better weather.
