Passion for Travel

#Travelphotography has always been a passion of mine.  I have boxes and boxes of 4″ x 6″ prints and 35mm slides which need to be digitized of past travel adventures.  My first trip with a dSLR, the Nikon D70, was to visit my daughter in Bath, England.  She was doing a college semester abroad. It was the trip which really sold me on digital photography.  The freedom from film let me use variable ISOs (aka Auto ISO). This allowed me to photograph in bright Sun outside and dark rooms inside without having to use different films.

I have since enjoyed photographing destinations all over the United States and, yes, #WaltDisneyWorld , too. You could say Disney is a subset of my #Travel photography passion.

AHL Eastern Conference Finals Set

After the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins came back from a 3-0 series hole to win last night in the 7th game against the Providence Bruins, they will face the undefeated in the playoffs and well rested Syracuse Crunch.

It could turn into to a goalie duel.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen has stopped 177 of 181 shots (0.70 GAA, .977 SV%) since replacing starter Jeff Zatkoff in Game 2 of the Providence series. Thiessen had a 3.05 GAA average against the Crunch.

Syracuse Crunch goalie Cedrick Desjardins has played in all 7 of the Crunch's playoff games and has posted a 2.02 GAA and a .916 SV% with one shutout. Desjardins only faced the Penguins once this season and shut them out in March.

Wildlife is what gets my heart racing.  Photographing a wild creature in their habitat is the most exhilarating photographic experience I know of.  Even as a kid, using a Kodak Instamatic (a misnomer if there ever was one), I would try and photograph birds and small mammals. Stuff Shot

Syracuse Crunch rookie Vladislav Namestnikov (18) tries to stuff the puck past Springfield Falcons goalie Curtis McElhinney (30) in American Hockey League (AHL) Calder Cup Playoff action at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Friday, May 17, 2013.

While Vladdy did not score, a fellow teammate got the rebound and tipped it in. It was his speed which got him in free on the goalie something Springfield could not match in the series.  Crunch won this game 5-2 and the series 4 games to none.

Hockey Handshake

The #Syracuse Crunch never got behind during the entire series as they sent the Springfield Falcons home after only four games.  Tyler Johnson (who is good at the hockey) had 5 goals and 3 assists in the series including a hat trick in Game 2.

Hockey tradition after a playoff series has the teams line up and shake hands in one of the best examples of sportsmanship in sports.

Space Mountain Anomaly

If there is one thing I learned when watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, is that anything out of the ordinary was called an anomaly. I would classify storm clouds behind Space Mountain at Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom as an anomaly. Not sure the new crew of the Enterprise have used this word yet.  Maybe this weekend in the new movie, Into Darkness, they will. 

This photo was taken with a Super Zoom lens which is my favorite travel lens to use, especially at Walt Disney World. Windy Day on the Lake

Lake Ontario has been a source of constant joy and strife in my life. The joy comes from beautiful sunsets, walks on the beach and boating on the water in summer. Lake Ontario is the engine which creates feet of Lake Effect snow to be shoveled and driven through in winter.

Times like this as I photograph the fading light after a summer sunset and capture the motion of the waves....it is magical.

How to Cook Crawfish

In Southeastern Louisiana, I was told by Cisco (in blue shirt and black hat) you use liquid seasonings which are not as hot and spicy on the mouth as the powder used in southwestern Louisiana. Liquid seasoning lets you taste the flavor of the crawfish meat. Then, you add ice just before pulling out the crawfish.  The ice helps to infuse the flavoring into the crawfish.

Below, from top left, live, fresh crawfish being dumped into a large steamer, Chef Cisco stirring in ice as the final step before serving, Cisco waiting for a batch of steamed crawfish to drain and a volunteer depositing steamed crawfish on to a cooling bin before being served to the hungry festival goers.

I have a few to share from my weekend adventure to the 6th Annual Crawfish Festival held up north in Syracuse, New York in support of Operation Southern (and Northern, too) Comfort organizations.  These organizations raise money to help people still struggling from the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.

Golden Reflections

The Sun had gotten low enough in the western sky to reflect off the windows of the buildings behind the bridge. Adding a bit of warmth to a cool looking #Rochester, #NewYork cityscape.

Canadian Totem Pole Face

One of three native Totem poles in Epcot's World Showcase pavilion for Canada. The totem poles go up to 30 feet (9 meters) in height. Two are made of fiberglass and one is carved out of wood. The wooden totem pole depicts the story of the "Raven" tricking the "Sky Chief" into the release of sun, moon and stars from a chest. It was carved by Alaskan artist David A. Boxley, and was officially put on display in April 1998 (Source: Wikipedia).

Syracuse Crunch Ondrej Palat (12) checks a Norfolk Admirals player into the boards during American Hockey League (AHL) action at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Friday, April 19, 2013. Syracuse won 6-1 getting one step closer to securing a higher seed in the upcoming Calder Cup playoffs.

Earlier this season, Palat spent a few games with the +Tampa Bay Lightning and since returning has picked up his physical game.  The Crunch are expecting two more returning players from Tampa once the Lightning's season is over.

Car Quest

Racing at ESTA Safety Park Dragstrip near Cicero, New York last Spring.  The facility is putting in a new concrete starting line which will delay the 2013 season opening until mid-to-late May. This will delay my panning practice, too.

If anyone is interested in a photo meetup here once they start running, let me know.  It's a small, local track which allows for up close and personal photography of the cars, crews and drivers.

Under the Lights and In the Rain

April showers are fine but last night it felt like a monsoon at the Henniger High School lacrosse field as I photographed the Baldwinsville Bees playing Syracuse East. I will say the photos are definitely cool to look at with all the rain falling even at a fast shutter speed.

Playoffs are Coming!

Syracuse Crunch Brett Connolly's (28) celebration after scoring his second of three goals against the Rochester Americans in the OnCenter War Memorial in Syracuse, New York.  Crunch went on to post a 5-1 victory over the Amerks in their last regular season meeting.

The Crunch clinched home ice for the first round of the playoffs over the weekend.  They have three games left to increase that into the later rounds this weekend with all the games at home next weekend.

Garbage Goal

Money Save

Bridgeport Sound Tigers Rick DiPietro (39) makes a save against the Syracuse Crunch in American Hockey League (AHL) action at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Friday, April 12, 2013. 

Yes, this is the same DiPietro the NY Islanders signed to a 15-year deal that pays him $4.5 million each season until 2021.  He is now playing for the Islanders affiliate in the AHL and has to be the league's highest paid player.

It took a mere 20 minutes of patience until the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest in the China pavilion in Epcot's World Showcase doors were closed and people stopped walking up to it.  Then, as luck would have it, blue hour arrived. In Motion Primer

Seems people are still a bit confused as to what this weekly #InMotionThursday photo theme is. In Motion Photography shows movement in a still photograph. This is the realm of relatively SLOW shutter speeds which show blurred movement or streaking.  Photos which FREEZE motion are not the type to share to the theme.
