This is an American Kestrel, a.k.a. "Sparrow Hawk" -- distant relative to the Chicken Hawk, of which tribe "Henery Hawk" of Looney Tunes fame was a distinguished member (cast opposite to Foghorn Leghorn)...

What I think he is thinking is something along the lines of:....
"There's that word again, public does that include me? Oh Geez..."

How to replace an image already posted on g+ without losing the comments

Folks, especially the perfectionists among you who do post processing and want to build a 'flawless' gallery of g+ images...

I feel your pain...  :)

I almost always notice something (or several somethings) in my new images after I post them; little (or sometimes big) somethings that I should have noticed before I posted... Aargh.   Then the +1s and friendly comments arrive -- sometimes before my 'enter' key has had a chance to spring back to normal position after posting :) and I think... now what? (Or perhaps I think something a little more ...expletive.  But I'm not telling)

The problem: once posted I can't just delete and replace an image, or I will also delete other people's comments... Well, not to despair, there is a way to have yourca... more »

Impressive stats

This stitched panorama kind-a got away on me...  I guess I was, as usual, humbled and highly impressed in the presence of nature's giants... and ended up with...

* 12 frames in two rows (stitched in Photoshop)

* Final file size: 612 MB

* "original negative" size: ~3 ft x 6.5 ft  (It should scale nicely to mural sizes)

* Resolution equivalent to a (theoretical) single shot from a 97.58 Megapixel camera

I went there for the Whales!

The large greys are migrating North to Alaska, and I have a 'secret' place on the Oregon coast where I thought I might see some... Sure enough I did... except they never came closer than ~a mile and my 420mm reach proved insufficient... But... I wasn't up to carrying a rented, 20lb 600mm lens over six miles of hiking in knee deep mud...  Then I also didn't feel like posting a photo where the greatest mammals on earth look barely larger than... ants (!)  Aargh...  So... what does one do... How about an LE exposure of a cloudy 'wistful' sunset... (Idea /inspiration thanks to my good friend +E.E. Giorgi and her recent LE posts) http://goo.gl/9ElzT

Inner Patterns

One of the commercial projects I worked on this last week... (Two images in this project: the other one is at http://goo.gl/85b8s)

The customer (a creative in Hollywood) liked my yellow Tulip image (http://goo.gl/JT7QD) but needed a vertical composition to best utilize the available space... I worked on it, as per his input/feedback and this is the result... now being printed 20"x30" in AFM (Acrylic Face Mount) at WCI (http://goo.gl/tMr7A)

Genesis of a new Season

Third week in March, in the in-between season, the weather is so changeable.  Standing there on terra firma, in the middle of the Columbia Gorge, I felt somewhat like... Moses :) as I stretched my arms with exhilaration, watching the parting of the "waters above".  http://goo.gl/I2EJG

I know, I know, I am probably late but FWIW, I just saw this movie (what else does a convalescing-photographer-who-wants-a-break-from-the-computer do on a cold rainy day?)... And...

I highly recommend it.  Great staging/acting but it is the dialog that makes this movie.  Actually, it could have just as easily been called "Lincoln and the 13th" (amendment of course) instead of just "Lincoln" but I suppose that could be debatable...

Overcast day blues (and greens, and...?)

It is Sunday. (No sun, but still... )

In my book this is supposed to be a day of fun... Instead I must stay in and ...work on my taxes! Aargh :(

We have this tedious, never-ending, soul-destroying "homework assignment" due the same day each year... Groundhog day all over again, and no end in sight.

Adding insult to injury it all comes in late Winter / early Spring, when new life is breaking out all around... nature throws a party and we are invited, and we want to go play... But... sorry, I need to work on my taxes... !?! (Yuck!)

I thought this country was founded on certain inalienable rights, key among them "the pursuit of happiness"...

Olympic (pre-) Dawn light


A just re-worked late November scene from the Olympic National park coast.  Other than the sky pastels, the wave fronts took on this... 'edible' color and texture... like some kind of liquid, cyan-colored cream  :) 

So quiet, yet wild and isolated; it was like a dream scene

The Ghost and...______

In the Lion's Den

Possibly the most difficult image I have ever processed (and still not sure I am finished with it).

Let me paint the scene for you, and this will get a bit technical, but you might like to get an occasional glimpse into the mind of a nature photographer.  

Late October 2010 at the Oregon zoo.  I am in the Lion's den as the 3 yr old male enters.  No worries -- there is a heavy, bulletproof glass pane between us, but still an intimidating sight that makes me double-check the thickness of the barrier as he gets to within paw-striking distance.  

The real problems for me are all photographic...

1. There is no light fixture in the den; the only available light is reflected from outside (not much on a typically overcast Oregon day). So I need to either shoot natural light =(slow shutter speed / wide aperture /hig... more »
