Even though I have travelled the world, hunting down my bucketlist items, this local Dutch list item remained unchecked up until yesterday. :)

This place is called Kinderdijk (Childerns Dike).

It is a system of 19 windmills that has kept the surrounding polder land unflooded since 1740.

It has been on the Unesco World Heritage list since 1997.

Nice sidenote that I just found out myself: This place is home of the famous "The Cat and the Cradle" tale.

In a quest to find out what kind of bird this is, +Dave Moffatt and +Karan Singh have asked for a full body shot of this magnificent bird that I have named 'The General'.

They suspect it to be a African Marsh Harrier. Hope this pictures helps with the identification and thanks again for helping me out. :)

The General

Just when I was strolling through the hotel Garden in Arusha, Tanzania, I spotted this guy sitting in the sun on a wall.

So I grabbed my camera and started making pictures like crazy, while trying to get closer and closer to my brilliant model.

It let me near it up until a few feet and started posing for me like it was doing it for years.

An encounter I will never forget. ;)

Could anyone tell me what kind of bird this is, Please?

Stare Down

If there is one thing I've learned from being in Africa, then it is how incredibly small and vulnerable we people are in comparison with the wildlife you'll encounter on the Serengeti.

Although the majoraty of the animals don't even bother to take a glance at the vehicles filled with with yummie Homo Sapiens that roam their territory, every now and then you'll find yourself trapped in a staring contest with an animal that can overpower you physically without any effort.

This was one of the numerous highlights of a lifechanging trip. If a trip to the Serengeti isn't on your Bucketlist yet, I can assure you it will pay off to make room for it. If you dare...

Damrak, Amsterdam

For my very first entry to the new #europeanphotography  theme, I've decided to share an image of my favorite European City and also the one nearest to me. Our capital: Amsterdam.

This is probably the first street you will see when you visit Amsterdam by train and leave Amsterdam Central Station to visit the city centre.

This street is called Damrak and it houses our stockmarket on the left and Dam Square straight ahead. You will likely smell the first coffeeshops right around this spot too. ;)

The tram, like the one coming right at us, is probably your best travel buddy across town. Unless you feel brave and want to travel like the locals, then you can go and explore this great city by bike. ;)

King of the Bongo

Always a winner game while traveling: Trying to break a salesman's game and make him show you his real self. :) Works wonders on local salesmen that are used to being blown out by grumpy old tourists. ;)

(With a special thanks to +Peter Hurley for helping me perfecting these skills, just before I left for this trip.)

The secret to making them 'break' their role is to just 'act normal' ;) This sounds pretty easy, but you'll be amazed at how little people are actually able to open up to a complete stranger, especially when they are trying to sell you something.

But if you try, you'll find out very quickly that they'll slip out of their role when you just Sincerely ask them something like: 'Hey man, how are you? How is bussiness going? Where the cute girls at?' ;)

Yess! Finally found a nice home for my powerline pics! :)

What a great idea, +Natosha Davis !

So for my first contribution for #powerlinefriday  ( +Powerline Friday ), I would like to share the first time I encountered the powerline dilemma as a photgrapher.

We were on the road in Nepal and had left early. After an hour or two we stopped at a little restaurant for a brunchbreak and were placed at the a table with this view. A nice foggy field, surrounded by some great curvy hills, but with some nasty powerlines blocking my view.

So after some creative cropping, I figured out that there was no way that I could get the shot I wanted without including the powerlines.

In the end, when I saw it for the first time on abig screen I was glad I did. :)

Jam 1995

Back in the day, when I and +Chau Nguyen still had our ups. This was probably taken around the time our Basketball skill was on its peak.

We played as much as we could, but the sad thing about being a streetplayer in Holland is because the weather usually sucks over here, you have around 3 months tops to really have some daily competition on the asphalt.

For those of you who are wondering, I didn't make this shot. I didn't got blocked either, but Chau jumping on me got me out balance enough to loose the ball.

Blue Bike Boy from Bali

I have a secret hobby... ^^

Whenever I am traveling and have to cover big distances by bus, car or train, I just love getting by the window and try to shoot the local life in the many, many split second moments that will follow in the hours that are still ahead.

Now this is easy when the vehicle isn't moving that fast, but from a certain speed, you will have to start panning for anything to be sharp. So it's a great way to exercise this.

You will have to have (or develop) patience when you try this technique. Not only is spotting a nice subject soon enough to actually try and make the panning shot in the first place a very challenging task; 9 out of 10 shots will be blurred due to the inevitable camerashake from the vehicle and bumps in the road.

The Sultans Doves are in Love

I just found out about +Love Wednesday curated by +Pierluigi Failla today, so I decided to revisit and reshare my favorite Love picture for the occasion.

I found these two lovebirds tucked away in the shadows of a far corner of a Sultans Palace in Yogyakatra, Indonesia.

Although there were a lot of noisy tourists and parades around on this hot, tropical day, inside this cage there was a whole different world...

Of all the places I've been, my trip to India & Nepal was by far the most thrilling one.

It was my first trip that I came equiped with an DSLR camera. I had been practicing a little bit with it at home, but had virtually no clue what so ever.

Luckily I had the 'Digital Photography' books of +Scott Kelby , a fresh copy of +David duChemin s book 'Within the Frame' and an incredibly photogenic country at hand. The collection would later on win 1st prize in a photocontest..

Since my Post Processing skills have improved since then, I decided to review this portfolio and reretouched my favorites. :)

As briefly stated before, last weekend I fell in love with the former shipyard The NDSM Werf in Amsterdam. Now, half of it is left to decay and the other half is for entertainment purposes, like a Skatepark and restaurants.

If you´re an Urban and-or Model Photographer visiting Amsterdam, you´ll have a great day here for sure!
