Rami Saarikorpi15,807World's best Photographers circles (1/5) by Rami Saarikorpi (November update). If I'm missing any one, please notify all the missing persons and when they share this circle they will be add to it (if they are qualified). THIS IS IMPORTANT: if you are in this circle, Share it at your wall also! This is the only way to get in other peoples circles!PS: If you are not in this circle, remember to check the other 4 circles before sending me mail or notification of being not in one!2012-11-02 07:57:20484123CC G+
Gailen Mapes15,527Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera L-Q - 4 of 14Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. I have had to split some circles because they exceeded 500 members.I am now sharing one circle per day, for the reason see: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/posts/RrPNTzHhQuHAs before these circles are photographers that I admire. They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to October 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting September 15th.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-10-04 10:47:3538420716CC G+

Robert Scoble1,236,665500 Hand Picked Photographers. Unfortunately only 500 people can be shared (I have 617 in this circle). I also am near my maximum of 5,000 circled (Google keeps me from circling more) so it's tough to add more, but I'm always looking to see more great photography, so if you aren't in this circle, leave your URL below so we can all check you out.By the way, I need to go through all my circles and look for inactive people again. It's been a while since I did that. If I were you I'd throw these 500 into a temporary circle, watch it for a while and move the ones you like into a circle of your own.Thank you to those of you who bring beauty into our lives. Everytime I need some inspiration I look to this circle.2012-04-22 18:03:4850014653148CC G+

If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to March 29 for this set.A word about spam... A lot of previously good photographers are sharing a lot of goofy stuff these days. Remember, if you are in the "Hand Picked" circles, you are represented as "more photos, less spam." Goofy animated GIFs don't hack it and I reserve the right to drop you from these circles. So if you were dropped, this is probably the reason. (I have the same 5000 limit as everyone else. I can't afford to keep spammers in my circles.)2012-03-29 20:05:1741510610CC G+
Kevin Dunseath0I was recently asked if G+ had fizzled- a question that gets asked a lot, and I answered that for me, it's done nothing of the sort. I think it all comes down to who you have circled, so I'm going to do what I have never done before, and that's share a circle. Here's my one of my photography circles. The people in here range from people everyone has heard of, to a few maybe fewer people have. From street photography to HDR, from Scottish landscape to rock and roll portrait. From tips and techniques, to gear, and everything in between. These people keep my stream bubbling with images so fantastic, that the concept of G+ fizzling has never once entered my mind. Enjoy!2012-03-24 10:21:48225312CC G+

Scott Jarvie43,552239 Most Interactive Photographers on Google+These people have consistently proven they know how to be friendly and they know how to communicate. They are Google+ socialites that love to +1, comment, share and sometimes hangout.Make your connections and your friends however you want here on Google+ but these people are a great place to start if you want my opinion.About the listPeople on this list range from full time well known photographers to many people that are just starting off in photography. What connects them? They all interact a lot on Google+Yes, There are tens of thousands of people that interact a lot... This list was put together by myself +Scott Jarvie with the help of many other interactive photographers; It represents "The MOST" interactive.I have spent many hours verifying that it is a quality list though I fully admit it will never be perfect. The size of this list has doubled since it was last released in september. You can merge the list into the old list.2011-12-05 18:52:02239263229225CC G+

Robert Scoble160,405Photography Circle, A-MI'm sharing my entire photography circle tonight for the first time (I had to split it into two parts so you can see it all, because Google only lets me share 500 people in one circle). More than 500 photographers. I've tried to keep it to only active photographers and only folks who post high-quality images. As with all my circles, these are a work in progress. If you are missing from them, please let me know. Also, if you see people who aren't active (in other words, who haven't posted in the past month) or who aren't high enough quality to keep in here, feel free to drop me a line at scobleizer@gmail.com or leave a comment here and I'll reevaluate. Scott Jarvie14,262I present: The 119 Most Interactive Photographers on Google+Now our community becomes even strongerAnd I will continue to keep my eyes and ears open to find those that are involved.Circle Sharing is New as of today. I suggest you do the following (if you don't already have a system)1.You can click where it says "Add Circle" 2. Give it your own name (Most likely "Most Interactive Photographers" or "Jarvie's List of Interactive Photographers")3. Then click "Create or Add Circle"4. DONEMORE ABOUT THIS CIRCLE************BackgroundLast month I had lunch with +Brian Rose and the Santa Monica portion of the G+ photos-team and we talked about how Google+ puts an emphasis on helping people quickly develop a good group of people in your circles. You start Google+ following no one. Google+ let's you add from your Gmail contacts or even your Yahoo contacts, it also suggests users and now it even has a suggested users list.My Take:People need a Social Network of people to interact with when you first join google+If there aren't many people it's not much of a Network and if they don't interact it's not very SocialYou can follow 10 people or 10k people that do not interact (share, comment, hangout) and your total would be Zero interactionOr you can focus on befriending people that are more prone to interact.************Most Interactive photographers:This is my list of photographers that are most likely to interact with you on Google+.The most typical ways to interact are in Comments, Shares and Hangouts. You can also see the list here:http://www.group.as/most+interactive+photographers/My ExperienceI am very active on Google+ and believe I have seen most of the other photographers that seem to interact. However, I can really only see who interacts when it comes to my experiences. (I assume that's understood)Some people come and go but all of these people on the list have also been consistent.I of course will be missing people. And this is not a list of the best photographers, some of them are just starting in photography. My Promise:If you follow this group of 119 photographers there will never be a dull moment on Google+Provided you start to interact as well."You must put in effort in order to reap a reward"*************Suggest:If you know of someone not on the list that you believe is really interactive in the Google+ Photography community speak up in the comments and the +1sRecap:Photographers: If you want a really interactive and fun experience on Google+ then invest the time and make sure you're following all 119 of these photographers and you will see the value of Google+ increase many fold. Does anyone know if there's a way yet to migrate G+ accounts to other addresses? This account is connected to an old gmail address, but I want it connected to the google address I actually use. I've been able to migrate everything else (even YouTube), but not my G+ account. With 12k of you having me in circles, I'm not in a hurry to just throw this away!

Is Aperture Quitting After 3.4.2 or 3.4.3 Update? Here’s the Fix.

There have been reports of Aperture quitting after an update via the Mac App Store, and it turns out that Apple posted a KB (Knowledge Base) article about it a few days ago.

Show and Hide “Sort & Filter Controls” in the Aperture Browser

This is one of those “everyone know’s it’s there” tips… until you don’t!

For a while I had noticed that the ability to filter by star ratings, or anything else, as well as the ability to toggle between Filmstrip, Grid and List view, were missing from Aperture whenever I was in Split View view. Since I know most of the keyboard shortcuts for this, I never put too much thought into it. On the rare occasions when I needed something I couldn’t use a shortcut for, I’d switch to Browser view to get to the commands.

ApertureExpert Live Training Session 023: Multiple Mac Workflow

Multiple Mac Workflow
This is a topic that keeps coming up in the forums, so I finally decided to record a video on it. The process really is straight forward, but as always the video is full of little tips to help you get the most out of the experience. What I covered here is two things:

•• How to add photos to a new Library on a portable Mac, then merge that Library into your main Library
•• How to take projects from your main Library on the road with you for further editing — either full editing, or just metadata editing.

And in both cases, I discuss how to handle Managed and Referenced libraries. Cool!

Aperture Vault’s File Extension Secret

If you’re not already familiar with Aperture Vaults, they are Aperture’s own built-in backup system. In brief, it’s a one-click backup for your entire library structure, metadata, previews, originals… everything if you’re running a Managed library, and if you’re running a Referenced library, then it’s everything except the Originals.

For more on how Vaults work, read this article: Aperture 3 Vaults; What’s Backed Up, and What Isn’t?

The process of restoring a vault is tedious. First of all, it’s not selective. It’s an all-or-nothing affair. So if you accidentally trashed a project but you know it’s in a Vault, you can’t just recover that one project.

or can you…

Plus, restoring from a Vault takes a long time if you have a big library. This is no quick recovery.

or isthere…

I would say one of the top ten Aperture questions I get from users, many of whom are experienced, is asking how they select and de-select multiple images for import. I think the reason for this confusion is that it doesn’t act quite the way the Finder does in this regard. Not only can you select an image, but the check box needs to be checked for it to be imported.

Yes yes, I know it’s a US holiday, but we can still celebrate around the world, can’t we? ;-)

There is a nice little 20%-off Labor Day sale happening now, along with a new Super Bundle of all Live Training videos for just $40 — combine that with the sale and it’s only $32 for all 22 videos! That’s like getting seven for free, or $1.45 each, or… well you get the idea. Pretty unbeatable, really!

Gorgeous 2013 Calendar for a good cause

A group of a dozen local scenic photographers each donated an image for a 2013 calendar being sold by The Maslow Project, http://www.maslowproject.com/store/maslow-calendars/ which is a program for homeless kids in Southern Oregon. Their motto is "looking for a hand up and not just a handout?", and all proceeds from the sales of these $15 calendars go towards the program. I have one here, and there are some lovely photos in this calendar.

Metadata Search Not Working? Rebuild Your Aperture Database.

Some users, myself included, had noticed after the 3.3 upgrade that metadata searches weren’t completely reliable. For example, I had a project of 461 images all starting with the same name, yet a search for that name was only returning about 50 of the photos. Similarly, searches for “Canon” in EXIF > Camera Make were turning up nothing, even though they were all Canon files.

Import & Browse Test: Aperture vs Lightroom vs Photo Mechanic

by +Thomas Boyd

Almost every assignment I do is deadline driven. Sometimes I even show images from a wedding that I’m still shooting. Speed is important to me. I’ll never complain that something is too fast. I’m always wanting it to move faster.

Aperture 3.3 has dramatically improved the speed in which we can look at photos not already in the library. Aperture 3.0 gave us the ability to browse, adjust and export images before they were even all finished copying from the card to the hard drive — this was a massive leap forward in productivity. Now, the Aperture team has taken Aperture 3.3 to the next level with dramatic improvements to handling the embedded JPEG file. They have made the speed in which the images draw to screen much faster.

It made me wonder; is Aperture faster thanthe othe... more »

Devignette vs Negative Vignette in Aperture 3.3

One of the enhancements in Aperture 3.3 is that the Vignette adjustment can now can go negative, effectively devignetting an image. However there’s an important difference between the pre-existing Devignette adjustment and the new negative Vignette ability.

Restoring a pre-Aperture 3.3 Vault into Aperture 3.3

A great question came up on the site where reader Dave T. asks “Are earlier vaults consumable by Aperture 3.3 if one has to restore?”. The answer was certainly “I should hope so!” but I ran a little test anyway.

Short answer is, it works. However there is a scary dialog that pops up that I think could be better written.

Creating New Auto Effects in Aperture 3.3

As pointed out in the Aperture 3.3: ApertureExpert Review article, the new “Auto Enhance” feature is actually an application of up to five auto adjustments, including:

White Balance
Exposure
Enhance (*)
Curves
Highlights & Shadows (*)

Aperture 3.3: The ApertureExpert Review

While ApertureExpert.com is already full of posts and tips on specific features in Aperture and the new Aperture 3.3, I also wanted to write a more standard review of the upgrade, to discuss not only what’s been added or changed, but also to address many of the comments and concerns I’m reading online. I’ve seen it referred to as “no longer pro” and as a step towards a forced iPhoto migration (to iPhoto, not from), a C|NET article called the most significant feature “support for AVCHD”, and one particularly well known photographer made a high profile exodus to Lightroom immediately following the 3.3 announcement. These observations are not only completely wrong, but frankly, bad journalism. Let’s get started.

How to Put RAW Fine Tuning Back in Aperture 3.3

There have been some complaints that Aperture 3.3 removed the “RAW Fine Tuning” adjustment panel from the default set. I’m sure it was removed because most people don’t use it, but if you want it to show up on every image, all you have to do is add it back to the default set.

Color Emoji Characters in Aperture 3.3 Project, Folder, Album Names

Reader Nathan Smith offered a clever way to include colors in the actual file names of your Projects, Albums, etc. in Aperture. This applies to any version, however in Aperture 3.3 where colors have been removed from the interface, this may be more relevant than ever. His video is embedded below.

Under Mac OS X Lion (it’s a Lion feature only), you can access the same emoji characters that you can in iOS. This is probably largely due to the upcoming ability to send messages between iMessage on an iDevice and the Mac, and so you need those funny characters actually showing up if someone reads their iMessage on a Mac! To access them, just open the Character Palette (usually but not always found under the Edit menu, and called Special Characters), and select Emoji. The Symbols subset is where you’ll find themos... more »

Another Way to Determine What Adjustments Have Been Made to an Image in Aperture 3

Sometimes I like to see a good list of what’s been done to an image. Of course I can just look a the adjustment pane, but I’ve found the lift and stamp tool provides a nice history of adjustments that is easier to determine what’s happened. It’s closer to the History palette in Photoshop.

Filter More Than One Label at a Time in Aperture 3

Aperture’s Search Dialog allows you to select multiple color labels at a time. In other words you can filter out not only red labeled images, but add any other colors as well. It may not be obvious, but it’s there.

Customizing the Tooltip in Aperture 3

There’s a handy little popup available in Aperture that can give you all kinds of information about the file without having to open the metadata tab to view it. How to activate (or de-activate) this has come up a couple of times recently in the forum, so I thought I’d do a short post on it.

Creating an Auto Refreshing Slideshow from Eye-Fi Upload

I had an unusual request from a client. They wanted me to photograph a fund-raiser party and have the photos projected onto a screen throughout the event. After doing it, I realized this would be a fun thing to do at parties, workshops, weddings, and other events.

My first thought was to hand off cards to an assistant and have them make a quick edit in Aperture and then start a simple slideshow. The downside is that the slideshow would be down while that happened.

I decided to use an Eye-Fi card to send images directly to my computer through the Wi-Fi signal. That’s easy enough to do, but all the slideshow options I looked at would not automatically update as new images were added. Aperture, Photo Mechanic, Cover Flow and even the Finder screensaver require the user to select the image and then then start thes... more »

ApertureExpert Live Training Session 019 Books Available Now

This was the first official Live Training done over Google+. For those there live, the echo problem has been solved! Which also will hopefully solve the sync issue in the recording. Don’t worry, it’s only in the Q&A, but it’s annoying nonetheless.

This session on Aperture Books is 45 minutes before even getting to the Q&A, then another 20 minutes of questions.

And here’s the fun new thing… you can now watch the entire thing for free. What’s the catch? It’s the Google+ YouTube broadcast, which is only 480p. The $2 real deal is the same 720p 1:1 recording you’ve come to love. So, watch it all for free on YouTube but to really see the details, part with your $2. I think it’s worth it ;-)

Watch below, and click through to http://www.apertureexpert.com/livetraining-catalog/ todownload the real... more »

Auto-Stack on Import in Aperture 3

Stacking was designed with two uses in mind (which I believe is what led to the confusion among users and the eventual deemphasis of the feature in Aperture). The first is to collect similar images shot in sequence where only one will prevail (i.e. the photos leading up to the perfect touchdown frame), and the second is to collect multiple versions of the same photo (i.e. a black and white version, a square cropped version, etc.).
