Another ApertureExpert tip…

Show and Hide “Sort & Filter Controls” in the Aperture Browser

This is one of those “everyone know’s it’s there” tips… until you don’t!

For a while I had noticed that the ability to filter by star ratings, or anything else, as well as the ability to toggle between Filmstrip, Grid and List view, were missing from Aperture whenever I was in Split View view. Since I know most of the keyboard shortcuts for this, I never put too much thought into it. On the rare occasions when I needed something I couldn’t use a shortcut for, I’d switch to Browser view to get to the commands.___Another ApertureExpert tip…

ApertureExpert Live Training Session 023: Multiple Mac Workflow

Multiple Mac Workflow
This is a topic that keeps coming up in the forums, so I finally decided to record a video on it. The process really is straight forward, but as always the video is full of little tips to help you get the most out of the experience. What I covered here is two things:

•• How to add photos to a new Library on a portable Mac, then merge that Library into your main Library
•• How to take projects from your main Library on the road with you for further editing — either full editing, or just metadata editing.

And in both cases, I discuss how to handle Managed and Referenced libraries. Cool!___It's Live Training time!

A little Aperture Vault tip that'll make your day

Aperture Vault’s File Extension Secret

If you’re not already familiar with Aperture Vaults, they are Aperture’s own built-in backup system. In brief, it’s a one-click backup for your entire library structure, metadata, previews, originals… everything if you’re running a Managed library, and if you’re running a Referenced library, then it’s everything except the Originals.

For more on how Vaults work, read this article: Aperture 3 Vaults; What’s Backed Up, and What Isn’t?

The process of restoring a vault is tedious. First of all, it’s not selective. It’s an all-or-nothing affair. So if you accidentally trashed a project but you know it’s in a Vault, you can’t just recover that one project.

or can you…

Plus, restoring from a Vault takes a long time if you have a big library. This is no quick recovery.

or is there…

The secret
There’s a little known secret about the Vault that I think is gonna knock your socks off.___A little Aperture Vault tip that'll make your day

Deselecting Images in the Aperture Import Window

by +Thomas Boyd

I would say one of the top ten Aperture questions I get from users, many of whom are experienced, is asking how they select and de-select multiple images for import. I think the reason for this confusion is that it doesn’t act quite the way the Finder does in this regard. Not only can you select an image, but the check box needs to be checked for it to be imported.

Metadata Search Not Working? Rebuild Your Aperture Database.

Some users, myself included, had noticed after the 3.3 upgrade that metadata searches weren’t completely reliable. For example, I had a project of 461 images all starting with the same name, yet a search for that name was only returning about 50 of the photos. Similarly, searches for “Canon” in EXIF > Camera Make were turning up nothing, even though they were all Canon files.___Metadata Search Not Working? Rebuild Your Aperture Database.

Import & Browse Test: Aperture vs Lightroom vs Photo Mechanic (yeah, we went there)

Import & Browse Test: Aperture vs Lightroom vs Photo Mechanic

by +Thomas Boyd

Almost every assignment I do is deadline driven. Sometimes I even show images from a wedding that I’m still shooting. Speed is important to me. I’ll never complain that something is too fast. I’m always wanting it to move faster.

Aperture 3.3 has dramatically improved the speed in which we can look at photos not already in the library. Aperture 3.0 gave us the ability to browse, adjust and export images before they were even all finished copying from the card to the hard drive — this was a massive leap forward in productivity. Now, the Aperture team has taken Aperture 3.3 to the next level with dramatic improvements to handling the embedded JPEG file. They have made the speed in which the images draw to screen much faster.

It made me wonder; is Aperture faster than the other apps pro photographers use to do this? Adobe has recently made made Lightroom 4.1 available. I hear it’s more responsive, and I want to know for sure. Many pro photographers still swear by Photo Mechanic for their deadline photo browsing and metadata duties. They perceive it to be faster than Aperture and Lightroom. Are their perceptions correct? I want to know.___Import & Browse Test: Aperture vs Lightroom vs Photo Mechanic (yeah, we went there)

A great question came up on the site where reader Dave T. asks “Are earlier vaults consumable by Aperture 3.3 if one has to restore?”. The answer was certainly “I should hope so!” but I ran a little test anyway.

Short answer is, it works. However there is a scary dialog that pops up that I think could be better written.___Restoring a pre-Aperture 3.3 Vault into Aperture 3.3

While ApertureExpert.com is already full of posts and tips on specific features in Aperture and the new Aperture 3.3, I also wanted to write a more standard review of the upgrade, to discuss not only what’s been added or changed, but also to address many of the comments and concerns I’m reading online. I’ve seen it referred to as “no longer pro” and as a step towards a forced iPhoto migration (to iPhoto, not from), a C|NET article called the most significant feature “support for AVCHD”, and one particularly well known photographer made a high profile exodus to Lightroom immediately following the 3.3 announcement. These observations are not only completely wrong, but frankly, bad journalism. Let’s get started.___Aperture 3.3: The ApertureExpert Review

Emoji!

Color Emoji Characters in Aperture 3.3 Project, Folder, Album Names

Reader Nathan Smith offered a clever way to include colors in the actual file names of your Projects, Albums, etc. in Aperture. This applies to any version, however in Aperture 3.3 where colors have been removed from the interface, this may be more relevant than ever. His video is embedded below.

Under Mac OS X Lion (it’s a Lion feature only), you can access the same emoji characters that you can in iOS. This is probably largely due to the upcoming ability to send messages between iMessage on an iDevice and the Mac, and so you need those funny characters actually showing up if someone reads their iMessage on a Mac! To access them, just open the Character Palette (usually but not always found under the Edit menu, and called Special Characters), and select Emoji. The Symbols subset is where you’ll find the most basic ones, although you can always add 😄 or 🐵 or 🎅 or 💩 if you really want to.___Emoji!

Another great post by +Thomas Boyd on ApertureExpert!

Creating an Auto Refreshing Slideshow from Eye-Fi Upload

I had an unusual request from a client. They wanted me to photograph a fund-raiser party and have the photos projected onto a screen throughout the event. After doing it, I realized this would be a fun thing to do at parties, workshops, weddings, and other events.

My first thought was to hand off cards to an assistant and have them make a quick edit in Aperture and then start a simple slideshow. The downside is that the slideshow would be down while that happened.

I decided to use an Eye-Fi card to send images directly to my computer through the Wi-Fi signal. That’s easy enough to do, but all the slideshow options I looked at would not automatically update as new images were added. Aperture, Photo Mechanic, Cover Flow and even the Finder screensaver require the user to select the image and then then start the slideshow.___Another great post by +Thomas Boyd on ApertureExpert!

ApertureExpert Live Training Session 019 Books Available Now

This was the first official Live Training done over Google+. For those there live, the echo problem has been solved! Which also will hopefully solve the sync issue in the recording. Don’t worry, it’s only in the Q&A, but it’s annoying nonetheless.

This session on Aperture Books is 45 minutes before even getting to the Q&A, then another 20 minutes of questions.

And here’s the fun new thing… you can now watch the entire thing for free. What’s the catch? It’s the Google+ YouTube broadcast, which is only 480p. The $2 real deal is the same 720p 1:1 recording you’ve come to love. So, watch it all for free on YouTube but to really see the details, part with your $2. I think it’s worth it ;-)

Another look at stacking in Aperture 3

Auto-Stack on Import in Aperture 3

Stacking was designed with two uses in mind (which I believe is what led to the confusion among users and the eventual deemphasis of the feature in Aperture). The first is to collect similar images shot in sequence where only one will prevail (i.e. the photos leading up to the perfect touchdown frame), and the second is to collect multiple versions of the same photo (i.e. a black and white version, a square cropped version, etc.).___Another look at stacking in Aperture 3

I finally got the Google+ "On Air"! I'll try a test broadcast for ApertureExpert in about an hour (at 8:30p PDT). Make it a simple Aperture Q&A if anyone wants to ask any questions. Cool!
