The North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway scenic landscape under crepuscular rays of light on an amazing autumn afternoon in western NC!  I shot this WNC mountain landscape on the same day as my other image of this location named "Rapture".  It was actually a test shot as i was setting up for Rapture, but I thought it was too good not to post when I saw it.

The North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway scenic landscape under crepuscular rays of light on an amazing autumn afternoon in western NC!  I shot this WNC mountain landscape on the same day as my other image of this location named "Rapture".  It was actually a test shot as i was setting up for Rapture, but I thought it was too good not to post when I saw it.   Thanks +fstop  and +Really Right Stuff !

Grandfather Mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway in western NC at sunset.  Made the trip to Grandfather Mountain State Park last week with some good friends and saw this gorgeous landscape during the Golden Hour light from the rocky pinnacle.  Grandfather Mountain is a jewel in the southern Appalachian Mountains of WNC, offering spectacular scenic landscape views from over 6000ft. above sea level.  In the distance you can see Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountains which are the tallest peaks in the eastern US.  On a clear day, you can see Charlotte NC on the horizon!

Jellyfish at Ripleys Aquarium in Gatlinburg TN.  We visited the Gatlinburg Aquarium last week and I thought these pacific sea nettle jellyfish were so cool looking!  Of all the interesting ocean going  sea creatures out there, these just remind me of some alien life form.

Definitely not an easy shot to pull off with sharp and noise-free results as it was super dark in this aquarium.  The Nikon D800 performed flawlessly at these higher ISO settings, I was quite impressed with the results.  The images are sharp and almost completely noiseless at the full 36mp resolution.

The Outer Banks has so many landscapes to photograph, and Jockeys Ridge State Park has plenty of potential.  Located in Nags Head on the Outer Banks, Jockeys Ridge is the tallest natural sand dune in the eastern US.  There was a nasty storm front moving through with 60mph winds when I shot this photograph, which revealed these awesome patterns in the deeper layers of sand that are normally covered by a thick layer of soft sand and not visible.  Looks like Mother Nature's topographical map!

I wish I'd have done a better job shooting this, but it was nearly impossible to think and function while being hammered with flying sand that filled my eyes the second I opened them.  The exposure only shows the heaviest flying sand near the ground, but it was bad even at 6 foot (I shot this from about 1.5ft off the ground). The "Tree of Life" shrouded in fog on the hiking trail to Craggy Pinnacle.  Craggy Gardens along the Blue Ridge Parkway is a popular spot for Asheville locals to get outdoors and hike. The scenic landscape views of the Southern Appalachians near Asheville NC are spectacular, and Craggy Gardens also boasts a large natural catawba rhododendron garden that paints the mountains with bright pink spring blooms in early summer.

The Roaring Fork area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is so vibrant and rich in the spring.  This is another image that was shot last spring during my "Spring in the Smokies" landscape photography workshop in Gatlinburg TN.  My good friend Mark VanDyke and I had a great time leading this workshop and got some really nice shots on this trip!

The North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway in all it's glory.  I shot this amazing autumn sunset from the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of Western NC.  The fall foliage has been great in some areas of the southern Appalachians this year, not so great in others.  I've been after this shot for a couple weeks now making numerous trips to this location in hopes that I would get some great conditions.  I was so pleased when it finally happened!

Heavy fog at the mile high swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain State Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of western NC.  There is something peaceful yet sinister about heavy fog and the insecurity of not knowing what lies ahead.  I really like the fact that I can "almost believe" that I can see what's on the other side of the bridge, but then it just isn't clear.

Sunset from the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of Western NC.  The southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway is my favorite section, really showcasing the incredible beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina.  I shot this sunset landscape during my "Blue Ridge Parkway Autumn Landscapes" photography workshop this past weekend.

Crepuscular light rays over Roan Mountain Highlands from Jane Bald along the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.  Western NC and Eastern TN meet at Roan Mountain, and the views of the Southern Appalachians from this location are spectacular.  Taming the intense light in this scene wasn't easy, but I am pleased with the result!  Click the image to view it large!   Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome!   ;-)

A wonderful small waterfall at Table Rock State Park in the foothills of Upstate SC.  Upstate South Carolina has many waterfalls to visit both small and large that I don't think you could ever visit them all!  I shot this Blue Ridge  waterfall landscape last spring while out visiting some local SC waterfalls with friends.  It was raining pretty good and was difficult to keep me and my camera dry, not to mention capturing an image with sharp foliage.  Patience paid off though and I was able to get a good sharp photograph in the end.  Click the image to view it large!   Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome!   ;-)

Welcome to Asheville NC - Blue Ridge Mountains Sunset

Sunset over a sea of fog and peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville NC.  I could tell you about the 3 hour drive it took to get to the trailhead, or the 8.5 mile hike it took to get to this location.  I could also tell you about the 3 days we camped out waiting for gorgeous conditions like this to unfold in front of us.  But I won't waste your time with any of that, because I shot this image from the parking lot at the local Lowes Store.  Isn't living in Asheville NC great?  

I named this image "Welcome to Asheville" because it actually looks over the end of the runway at the Asheville Airport, and is therefore the first view visitors to Asheville are treated to.  Also, the cut out in the trees on the side of the big mountain is the Blue Ridge Parkway as it heads south out of Asheville on its way tothe G... more »

It's been an exciting week so far!
