Elizabeth Warren's first stand-alone bill as Senator is awesome and provocative.

Senator Warren announced today that she's proposing a bill that will make it so students going to college can borrow at the same rate that Wall Street does.

It's a bill that calls attention to the wild disparity between how Wall Street is treated and how the rest of us are, and Senator Warren's proposal is wild enough (0.75% for student loans!) to wake up the politicians who want to keep the status quo.

Even if the bill doesn't pass, by playing such a strong hand right at the outset Elizabeth Warren has already changed the discussion that's sure to ensue when student loan rates jump to 6.8% on July 1st. After Elizabeth Warren's call today for 0.75%, 6.8% seems totally unacceptable. That is how to lead.

Bitcoins. Overhyped virtual currency that's soon crashing into oblivion or genuine and purposeful invention that's here to stay?

Whatever it is, what I find highly interesting, is that Bitcoin mining went not only from CPU to GPU and then FPGA, but now at least two companies engineered and delivered ASICs that dramatically increase the hashing rate per second and Euro and Watt.

Lets have a look at some numbers. Data is from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison, prices are from http://geizhals.at/eu/ as of today, 2013-04-14.

CPU, Core i7 3930k, 66.6 Mhash/s, 130 W, 498 €, 0.512 Mhash/s/W, 0.134 Mhash/s/€, 0.001 Mhash/s/W/€
CPU/GPU, A10-5800K, 105 Mhash/s, 100 W, 108 €, 1.05 Mhash/s/W, 0.972 Mhash/s/€, 0.010 Mhash/s/W/€
GPU, AMD Radeon HD 7970, 825 Mhash/s, 230 W, 324 €, 3.587 Mhash/s/W, 2.546 Mhash/s/€, 0.011 Mash/s/W/€FPGA, ModMiner ... more »

If you must pay attention to just one wiseguy this week, ignore me!  I am plenty interesting... but nothing I can possibly say is as important as what Lawrence Lessig says here in this TED talk.    It is literally make or break as to whether the American Republic and its experiment can continue.

Lawrence Lessig: We the People, and the Republic we must reclaim.  DOn't yawn and assume you know about this.  Watch it.

The Money Changers

The United States is provoking North Korea. They keep putting more and more sanctions on them. It's economic warfare. And the Cyprus banking crisis is coming to America.

Today, Bitcoin officially became a crazy idea that’s actually working.

This huge piece of driftwood washed up on the beach at La Push, a small community in Clallam County, Washington. La Push, surrounded by the lush forest of the Olympic National Park, is located on the northwest coast of Washington's most westerly peninsula, at the mouth of the Quillayute River. The tree is a Sequoia Semper Virens, or Costal Redwood, only grown in Monterey, California. It would have travelled hundreds of miles before being washed up on the beach at La Push

Similar to the concept of the solar roadway, India is now building solar canals. By covering the waterways with solar panels, the project not only creates energy, but also helps to prevent water loss through evaporation, while at the same time saving space and money.

Microsoft’s new Kinect patent goes Big Brother, will spy on you for the MPAA

Microsoft has filed for a Kinect-related patent, and it’s a doozy of an application. The abstract describes a camera-based system that would monitor the number of viewers in a room and check to see if the number of occupants exceeded a certain threshold set by the content provider. If there are too many warm bodies present, the device owner would be prompted to purchase a license for a greater number of viewers.

No, really. It’s that blunt. From the abstract: “The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken.”

That is, there was no exploit found for Chrome OS at Pwnium 3. How about that!

A 3D hologram powered by ThreeJS and Leap Motion

The ultimate mashup! +Robbie Tilton projected a JavaScript (+three.js) 3D model of Earth to an inverted glass prism (what an amazingly simple idea to create a hologram BTW - genius!) and wired it up to a Leap Motion gesture controller to create a future-like interface found in many a Hollywood hits! Check out the video or the blog post on BadassJS (http://bit.ly/Z1XUxB)

Shows how easy it is to come up with something cool with a few lines of code and some imagination!

What's that you say? Solar panels ugly? Au contrare, mon frere.

Yale Environment 360: U.S. scientists say that emerging photo-voltaic technologies will enable the production of solar shingles made from abundantly available elements rather than rare-earth metals, an innovation that would make solar energy cheaper and more sustainable.

All Debt Has Been Erased - Legally!
#oppt
I know, I know what you're thinking. Now, I haven't quite got my head round this yet, but this would appear to be highly significant if it's true! Please study this and pass it on.

"Many of you have heard, and many have not. Announced publicly on 25 December 2012, the system of Corporate-Governmental rule has been foreclosed. Legally foreclosed… via one of its own mechanisms. The “Powers That Be” are now the “Powers That Were”. All debt has been erased and corporations – including but not limited to Corporate Governments and Banks – have been foreclosed.

Sure, they may continue to play along in hopes we will play along with them. But thanks to a series of UCC (Uniform Commercial Code) filings made by the One People’s Public Trust (known as OPPT) the choice is now yours to make. A newframework for so... more »

Mary Mary, quite contrary, how DOES this garden grow? Astonishing plant is still thriving inside sealed bottle after 40 years without fresh air or water.

"David Latimer first planted his bottle garden in 1960 and last watered it in 1972 before tightly sealing it shut 'as an experiment'.

The hardy spiderworts plant inside has grown to fill the 10-gallon container by surviving entirely on recycled air, nutrients and water."

This reminds me of two things:  1}  the terrariums we used to make in science class in elementary school.  I still have plans to make a large one one day when I have more room.  2}  my sister's husband's great, great grandmother started growing a cactus {no, not in a bottle}...one of those soft cactuses that look more like a regular plant, I forget what it's called. Anyway, the thing has been passed down fromgene... more »
