Reno crash killed 9; probe focuses on wayward part
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The death toll rose to nine in the air race crash in Reno as investigators determined that several spectators were killed on impact as the 1940s-model plane appeared to lose a piece of its tail before slamming like a missile into a crowded tarmac.
Moments earlier, thousands had arched their necks skyward and watched the planes speed by just a few hundred feet off the ground before some noticed a strange gurgling engine noise from above. Seconds later, the P-51 Mustang dubbed The Galloping Ghost pitched oddly upward, twirled and took an immediate nosedive into a section of white VIP box seats.
The plane, flown by a 74-year-old veteran racer and Hollywood stunt pilot, disintegrated in a ball of dust, debris and bodies as screams of "Oh my God!" spread through the crowd.

On a beautiful day in August, 2007, my wife and I visited the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park and caught this image. The 4-lane highway at bottom left disappearing into the mountain is US 25E which is disappearing into the Cumberland Gap Tunnel, a 4,600 foot tunnel which was opened in October, 1996. The old highway across the Gap itself was removed and restored to a wagon trail similar to what settlers would have seen in by settlers in late 1700's and early 1800's. Worth a visit if you are nearby. The town below is Cumberland Gap, Tennessee.

On a terribly cold Monday I was able to create these images using my D200, a Tokina 100mm lens and about 10 stops of Singh Ray ND filter. The park is Burgess Falls State Park near Cookeville, TN.

Imagine actually living here in Cades Cove and having this view every day. Life itself must have been terribly hard, but this view would do a lot to temper the hardness. The second shot is Sparks Lane, also in Cades Cove, and is probably as well photographed a dirt road as you will ever find!

We are blessed to have the Great Smoky Mountains National Park less than 3 hours away.

NIKON D400 -- Somewhere in America there are people, like you and me, using D400s right now. People are writing books & articles for national publications, and vendors know they are coming. Yet as best as I can tell not one of them has uttered one peep about it. Boy, those guys at Nikon must have a really big hammer to keep all those folks as quiet as mice!
