*Great points from +Steve Faktor on Google Strategy and Google Money :) ...*
"...From free video hosting to free document management to free phone calls to free email, there’s one thing no one can deny – Google knows how to please our inner shoplifter. If Colgate offered free toothpaste to watch us brush or Ivory offered free soap to watch us shower, they’d find a few takers and a lot of resistance.
Google’s products wear a brilliant disguise. Each consumer freebie is an irresistible magnet that brings users in droves, but is subsidized by a hidden information exchange – an entirely separate data exchange where advertisers pay to target those same users.

Dear Googles: Can haz moar Skroalbrz Plz?
Really, not. I'm kidding. But ... 5 scrollbars packed next to each other in Notifications? For reals?
What do we have?
1. Post text scroll.
2. Main G+ window scroll.
3. Notifications window scroll.
4. Comments section scroll.
5. Editor window scroll.
As has been noted by several people, the Notifications drop down is notoriously twitchy. I suspect much of the problem comes when scrolled to the bottom of comments while adding a new comment, and missing the scrollbar you meant to hit, resulting in the Notifications drop-down closing, and loss of any entered content (this appears to be not getting lost all the time now, though I've tested and found I can still lose text: draft mode please).
In my custom CSS I've addressed this by:
1. Expanding the post area.... more »

Smartphone data usage prices: up to 100x difference in EU
In depth study shows astounding differences in the EU telecom market. Mobile internet prices differ enormously between member states and there is still no pan-European pricing in spite of large multinationals like Vodafone.
Some depressing observations from the study:
Smartphone tariff data volume allowances: up to 500x difference in EU27: in progressive markets independent challengers (e.g. Tele2 and 3) offer for the same price 100 to 500 times more data volume than what Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom or Telefonica offer in protected markets.
In progressive markets, when spending €24 consumers get on average 10 times more (13GB vs 1.3GB) smartphone data volume than in protectedmarkets. On top they also get twice more minutes and SMSs.
Data only tariff volume allowances: up to 100... more »

12 years after F-35 was contracted it made its 1st vertical takeoff
The video released two days ago seems to show an impressive feat, but be aware that it can only do this with almost empty fuel tanks and no weapon systems.
The chances that the F-35B (the marine version with the vertical takeoff feauture) will ever be used by the Marines is anyway slim. Currently Marine pilots are not allowed to perform a vertical landing the maneuver is deemed too dangerous, and it is reserved only for Lockheed test pilots.
The F-35 program is anyway far behind schedule and plagued by budget overruns, but the F-35B could well become a museum piece even before its first real flight by an air force.

Apple R&D never made money: most profits were made in Ireland!
Appe CEO Cook said: "We're proud that our research and development is in California." On which senator Levin in today´s congressional hearing said "95 percent intellectual property is in the U.S., but most of the company's profits are in Ireland."
Levin says 75 percent of sales earned by these three Irish subsidiaries. "Bring it home," he said. "You do this with Mexico and Canada. It's your decision, your judgment, not to bring those profits home. $100 billion dollars plus stashed in those three Irish companies."
"From the bottom of my heart, we cannot continue a system where a multinational company can make a decision sitting down in 2008-2009, as to where the profits are going to flow," Levin said. Citing the benefits of living in the U.S., re... more »

Enchante me, simplify my life, make me amazing: Android's design principles. It's touchy-feely; it's about people; it's the designer's opportunity to elicit positive emotion.
Enchant: Delight me in surprising ways. Real objects are more fun than buttons and menus. Let me make it mine. Get to know me.
Simplify: Keep it brief. Pictures are faster than words. Decide for me but let me have the final say. Only show what I need when I need it. I should always know where I am. Never lose my stuff. If it looks the same, it should act the same, Only interrupt me if it's important.

Suggestions about the new Google plus
As the hangout about #newgoogleplus is scheduled to fit only America, and I'm in Europe, I write here my problems, questions, suggestions to +Google+ people.
1) The stream is no longer a stream, as it does not flow. We have to keep on clicking on the blue advise to open the dam and get the new posts. And even then, if there are more than, let's say, 20 posts, you don't get them all. How can I get my flowing stream back?
2) Text, both in posts and comments, gets cut ridiculously short. It's very hard to read anything having to click on more so much. Give as more text!
3) When clicking on the red notifications square we can see new comments, but it's very hard to read them. I get three nested scroll bars: the page one, the notifications one and the comments one. Unify ... more »

So what did Yahoo! really buy with Tumblr? A part of the validation offered (by Ms. Mayer especially) was that the goal was to buy the users. Paraphrasing: "Take 700 mil we have, add 200 mil from Tumblr, and you have almost one billion, a huge audience to monetize."
I'm not sure where those numbers come from, but if Yahoo! wanted to buy "people" they might have been better off buying wordpress.com or blogspot.com. (Is it not a shame that Blogger is not much cooler and in consciousness? Google needs to work harder on that!)
See graph 1 below, unique visitors each month on each platform from Compete. Tumblr is much smaller than people might imagine in its ability to attract an audience.
Perhaps graph 2 is the reason that Yahoo! bought Tumblr, the number of page views (attractive for delivering display ads). You can see that Wordpress has h... more »

Name the top three CPU manufacturers; Intel, AMD, Nvidia? Nope!
The latest figures show that AMD fell back to a 4th place and Qualcomm and Samsung are now ranked second and third. The number five is even harder to guess: FreeScale is in front of Nvidia.
Amazing changes brought by the rise of the mobile market. Worrying as well as AMD is suffering so much on its traditional desktop market that a near monopoly by Intel is close. Looking at turn-over AMD with $3,6 billion is now at 1/10th of Intel´s CPU business.
The interesting question is if Samsung can keep it´s high position on the list when the contract with Apple ends.
Currently shipping CPU´s to Cupertino is responsible for over 80% of sales, but Samsung is selling much more phones and tablets per year. If they would exclusively use their own Exynos processors in the line-up, they could easily mak... more »

LGBT in Europe: still a long way to go
Nearly two-thirds of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals living in the European Union do not dare hold their partner's hand in public, according to the results of a survey published earlier this month.
According to the Morten Kjaerum, director of the Agency for Fundamental Rights (AFR), "Fear, isolation and discrimination are commonplace in this community".
Nearly 30% of the 93 000 participants in this study were victims of violence or abuse in the past five years. Even in generally tolerant countries, some feel discriminated against and are often verbally abused. Often, discrimination begins at school: according to the report, two out of three people had to hide their sexual orientation and have been the target of negative comments or behavior.

Second life of Geocities @Yahoo while Tumblr users move to G+?
After the huge success of buying Geocities for a whopping $3.57 billion Yahoo now decided to buy Tumblr for just a little over a billion.
Tumblr users are not amused and doubting if they want to be part of the acquisition.
Now that the G+ interface is close to that of Tumblr it would be a nice move if Google gave us just the extra tools which made Tumblr a popular blogging platform. Maybe integrate blogger with G+ to attract these users?
Win - Win?

Real nerds != programmers, they make their own > language
A neither real nor integer history of programming languages ....
1964 - John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz create BASIC, an unstructured programming language for non-computer scientists.
1965 - Kemeny and Kurtz go to 1964.
1970 - Niklaus Wirth creates Pascal, a procedural language. Critics immediately denounce Pascal because it uses "x := x + y" syntax instead of the more familiar C-like "x = x + y". This criticism happens in spite of the fact that C has not yet been invented.
1995 - At a neighborhood Italian restaurant Rasmus Lerdorf realizes that his plate of spaghetti is an excellent model for understanding the World Wide Web and that web applications should mimic their medium. Offer posts in Google+: Easily save and share offers with your circles
Millions of people follow brands they love on Google+ to keep tabs on them, get the latest news on products, join in on the conversation or simply to be entertained. Many people also engage with businesses to get great deals and discounts. Starting today, we’re making it easier to discover, save and share offers right from Google+.
We’re beginning with a select group of brands like +ZAGAT , +Hello Kitty , +Art.com , +NOOK , +Adafruit Industries who can now share offers with their followers. If you follow any of these brands, you'll soon see offers from them in your stream. You can save these offers directly from the post. Once saved, you can use the Google Offers app or simply follow the email confirmation on how to easily redeem the offer online or in-store.

Want to actually read something on the new G+ layout? A fix!
Is the new layout with the endless more in posts but especially in comment-rich interactions, driving you nuts?
Are you tediously working your way through scroll bars and clicks on 'more' while losing all track of the actual conversation?
Just click on the date/time stamp of a post while holding control and you get a new tab with the whole conversation expanded

If they start to eat you, join forces: Samsung Nexus defragments Android
A clever move for both companies; releasing a Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus edition with stock unlocked Android. A solution which works well for all parties involved.
Samsung can go on putting its heavily customized almost non-Android interface on its successful Galaxy series, while Google gets a technically perfect phone with a brand which really sells on board of the ´pure´ Android experience.
Who will gain more from this move: Samsung or Google?

As much as I´m interested in the Google conference, my streams seem to be cluttered with photos of people checking in, standing in queues or announcing that we will soon see the keynote.

Google to Introduce Music Offering
by +Lee Smallwood
Google will integrate this music option within its Android operating system. Android is widely used in both smartphones and tablets. Google wants to reconfirm Android as a wise choice for both users and device-manufactures and plow the market soil for more initiatives.
The giant also challenges directly Spotify. Spotify offers a platform for music lovers to search and retrieve high quality music files from all over the word. The company says that has access to millions of tracks for any occasion – partying, relaxing or working out.

A day of unrest as the G+ stream was broken, can now be put to bed
Lead architect for G+ +Yonatan Zunger just confirmed that two bugs caused the stream to stagnate for many users.
The stream for All Circles as well as specific circles didn´t show new posts and many users complained about a lack of interaction on their posts.
The suspicion was that Google had introduced a new relevance algorithm overruling the users circle settings. A speculation which was fed by a change in the actual circle slider settings. New: 15 GB unified storage space in the Google Cloud
Excellent idea: With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want.

Richard Branson: no longer a Virgin, but still a good sports
Seen here serving passengers as a stewardess after losing a bet with F1 owner and AirAsia-ceo Tony Fernandes.
Branson lost the bet to Fernandes more than two years ago. The pair wagered on which one of their Formula One racing teams would finish ahead of the other, in the debut season of the 2010 Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
