A friend of mine works for a company that just last week informed him that his position (and thirty like it) now requires a CISSP by October 2nd. His company is not paying for a prep-course (in whole or part), is not supply study material, is not paying for the exam, and is not providing a raise post-test.
I don't think this company understands just what a CISSP entails.

Texas pastor says if congregation members will help pay for his helicopter repairs, God will send them a car.
New Light Church pastor Bishop I.V. Hilliard told Houston, Texas, parishioners that if they each donated $52 each for replacement blades for his helicopter that God would reward the action with car repair or a new car.

Benjamin Graindorge designed the Fallen Tree Bench with an intent to emphasize the natural beauty within the piece of wood he was carving.
The skill with which he brought forth his idea is inspiring.

From +David Auerbach, who is always worth quoting:
"Working in tech plays tricks on your mind.
The quality of coding and other technical skills can be assessed far more objectively than other measures of intelligence or job performance, and it can split your worldview into the same objective, extremely meritocratic terms: People are smart or dumb (“flipping the bozo bit” is tech slang for deciding a person has nothing to contribute), ideas are right or wrong, morals are black and white. You start thinking you know what’s best for people. Snowden did when he leaked classified NSA documents.
[...]
Snowden was, in sum, an elitist who was not part of an elite.
[...]
In past generations, people like Snowden—members of a nonelite middle class—would have settled down into staid white-collar jobs that didn’t make full use of their intelle... more »

Quoting Tumblr People
I have a habit of saving some of the hilarious, interesting, or just plain weird stuff that people on Tumblr say. These quotes have once again piled up, so here are a few of them.
brandnewswastikas.tumblr.com:
"I like it when a girl has a food stain on her shirt because it means that she's bad with spoons and will probably need me to feed her and I'm good with spoons so it will give me a chance to show off a little."
partybarackisinthehousetonight.tumblr.com:
"I always feel really uncomfortable when two heavily tattooed people have a baby and the baby comes out blank - idk, I just expect some tattoos."
fartgallery.tumblr.com:
"My biggest fear is dying while wearing a hat because I never wear hats and I don't want the people that find my body to think that I like to wear... more »

Attempts at comparing surveillance in the US with '1984' are hyperbolic and foolish.
The closest thing to the bleak Orwellian future that I can think of in our world today is North Korea.
Read the damn book, and stop being a hyperbolic git.

Rapier and Walkers, at Dawn!
I hope I do as well when I am ancient. We'll soon find out.
Apparently old people love it! at least the ones at Corpus Christi Catholic Home for retired priest and nuns in Melbourne, Australia, do. The over 80 years old athletes have been learning the art of fencing for nine months now, and apparently they are getting quite good at it. One of the care-takers from the home said the old people were a bit reluctant at first but after having a talk with the convincing instructor, they said yes.
Even 93 years old Sister Dolores says she loves the sport, even though she admits it’s a challenge at her age and she’s always afraid she might fall over.

I know just how she feels.
Originally from the Sunday Times, the article itself is now paywalled. http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/fencing-never-gets-old.html was kind enoug... more »

"Fourteen 7-Eleven stores were seized and nine franchise owners and managers were arrested and charged with conspiring to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and harboring illegal immigrants. According to U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch"
" the 7-Eleven defendants allegedly forced the immigrants to work 100 hours a week and pocketed the majority of their pay, while also forcing them to live in and pay rent in boarding houses that the defendants owned. This "plantation system" allegedly went on for more than 13 years, she said".

Facebook and Google have set up their latest data centers at the edge of the Arctic Circle to take advantage of the cold air and abundant renewable energy there. Using the freezing air to cool massive server arrays is far cheaper and more energy efficient than using air conditioning. Google has agreed to buy the entire output from a wind farm in Sweden for 10 years to power its data center in Finland.

Republic Commando: Hard Contact
Extended Universe
This was the first Star Wars novel I've enjoyed that wasn't centered around a force sensitive individual and it was a nice change of pace. The novel is the first of t he Republic Commando series which shows the continuance of the infamous Clone Wars from the point of view of the Republic Commandos, highly trained and highly equipped clones that do special operations for the Republic.
In this story, a squad of lone survivors is created to extract a scientist and her project (a biochem agent designed to kill clones) before it can be weaponized. However, no plan survives first contact with the enemy, and operating under outdated intelligence, the squad must adapt and overcome with the help of a padawan that was hiding on the planet.
The padawan, Etain, is struggling after the loss of her master, the ap... more »

The White House posted this photo yesterday in honor of Father's Day. Saw several people on Twitter (and other places) making fun of it which I thought was rather petty.
Then I thought about a few fathers, none of whom I know, but have read about. Wondered how they feel about this photo and how they'll explain to their kids who have been suspended from school for various gun-related incidents.
How do you explain this to 7-year-old Josh Welch who was suspended from his Maryland school for fashioning his Pop Tart into the shape of a gun. Suspended for two days and even after an appeal, will have that suspension permanently on his record. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/11/pop-tart-gun_n_3419815.html
Or the 11-year-old in another Maryland school district who was on the bus and said he wished he'd had a gun at Sandy Hook to protect those kids. He was ... more »

If hipsters are always balking at how the "new" stuff of some artist, band, or scene isn't as good as the old, then were nerds (who often do the same for some show, genre, or author) acting as hipsters before being hipsters was cool?

You're essentially begging to be included in a pointless "Hallmark Holiday." Good Job.

The best thing I've ever heard a pastor say:
"It's not the responsibility of the school to teach your children the Bible; it's up to you, the fathers."
On that, we agree. Keep the Bible out of school.
