Most are familiar with kickstarter where you get perks or preorder stuff. What if you could invest and own a part of a business that did some good in the world. The JOBS act opens up that possibility where the average person can become an investor and share holder in a startup.

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers -- so many caring people in this world." -Fred Rogers

I'm always anxious for spring and warmer weather. Come February I start looking through seed catalogs and planning what I will grow. I start my seeds indoors to get a jump on the gardening. My process has evolved each year. Last year I built a seed starting rack. I also purchased a t8 and a t5 fluorescent light after getting sick of lanky seedlings that were starved for light and running out of space on the window sill. This year I was planning a backpacking trip and needed to leave my plants unattended. I purchased some burpee grow trays that included the capillary mat and they worked wonderfully. My tomatoes and peppers are loving it. Normally I have to water at least once or twice a day but you fill these trays with water and they can go for a week or more before needing water. My only concern is that the soil might be too moist but so far the plants are doing well although I see moss starting to... more »

While looking at analytics and congratulating coworkers about our increased site traffic I noticed our bounce rate had gone up. This led to a discussion about why this might be a good thing and a deeper investigation into what bounce rate means and some mistakes you might make in interpreting that data. As part of one of my MBA classes I created a blog post on the subject.
What do you think? Can an increase in bounce rate be considered a good thing?

10 sobering lessons learned after teaching 88 struggling entrepreneurs for 6 months. Here's are the 10 lessons I learned after mentoring this ragtag group. You can start a business without an idea. Entrepreneurs sabotage themselves by focusing on the least important parts of a business in the beginning, entrepreneurs put off what they are most afraid of -- failing, entrepreneurs are lonely, but they thrive in a community with others, entrepreneurs crush through results with accountability, entrepreneurs who made excuses about not getting results typically suffered from a lack of desire, building software is totally possible even if you're technically clueless, money is abundant to you once you develop salesmanship, your background, age, race, and geographic location have nothing to do with being successful, and entrepreneurs get stuck trying to find something they are passionate about.

Picked up 4 packages of bees and two queens from Jones Bee Company on Saturday. It was a zoo. It's always surprising to see the numerous fellow beekeepers.

Why Bootstrap (the grid-based HTML, CSS, and Javascript templating system from Twitter) might be very important. "What the Mac realized is that there are a set of things that all software has to do, so why shouldn't they all do them the same way? If they did, software would be easier to develop and debug, but more important -- it would be easier to use. If there was only one way to do menus, then once a user learned how to use the menus of one app, they'd already know how to use the menus of all others. The reason programmers didn't like it, and I was one of them, was that they took what we did and commoditized it. The same patterns are observable in the web. In fact, it's kind of sad how much of a repeat it is, how backward today's development environment is compared to the one envisioned by the Mac."

Interesting CMS usage survey results from Higher Educaiton. I administer Cascade Server for Health Sciences and really like it. Campus uses OmniUpdate and it was rated highly as well. Sharepoint.. that's another story. I wonder if they were to look at versions how that would change the survey results.

I've got spring fever and have begun starting my seeds. In the past my seedlings have been leggy and week because they haven't had enough light. This year Im growing under fluorescent light but I want to maximize my space. Tiered rack go for $500 or more and Im not willing to pay that much. Here is a great DIY option using shop lights and inexpensive 2x2's.

Macro Monday
Picked up a used Tokina 100 2.8 for my B-day, took a few critter shots. Its cool to see all the little details of things. I didn't realize how difficult it is to hold focus handheld. With such a small depth of field and such a small subject the slightest movement puts the focus off of the subject. So far loving the lens and the new challenge of macro.

Colorblindness comes in varying degrees. I'm red green color blind as well as all of my brothers. I remember back in the day when Silver Tab Levis were all the rage in high-school. I bought a pair from a clearance display and thought I got the greatest deal. I wore them frequently until at the end of the year one of my friends asked me. "Why do you always wear those purple pants?" I was mortified. I thought I had been wearing a conservative navy color the entire year.
As an artist/photogrpaher I have sometimes struggled with my color deficiency and was curious how I compare.
Here is an interesting test to show you where your color deficiency lies and how badly you are deficient. A high score means your really color blind, a low score means not bad. A 0 means you can see color perfectly.

Grilled Salmon is one of my favorite dishes. This variation turned out well. Just make sure you don't over cook it and salmon will always be a hit.
Pat salmon fillet dry. Rub with olive oil.
Dress with lime thyme or Lemmon thyme, chopped basil, fresh ground pepper and sea salt then top with lemon slices and a sprinkle of sugar grill indirectly on medium high (450 f) for about 8 minutes skin side down.
Internal temperature should read about 140 degrees f internally
We ate this with steamed green beans and fresh tomatoes and cukes from the garden and some mashed sweet potatoes. I love summer!
