Tulip Field, North Holland
The tulip season in Holland is as brief as it is beautiful. There are only a few weeks in April and May when the flowers are in full bloom and before they are cut. The weather the last few weeks has not been great but a couple of days ago it was pleasant enough and I decided it was probably my last chance so I grabbed the camera and headed north. Many of the fields had already been cut, but every now and again I would come across fields of stunning color.

The tulip season in Holland is as brief as it is beautiful. There are only a couple of weeks from late April to early May when the flowers are in full bloom and before they are cut for sale. The weather the last few weeks has not been great but yesterday it was pleasant enough. I decided it was probably my last chance so I grabbed the camera and headed north. Iglesia del Sagrario, Granada, Spain
The beautiful, elaborate yet relatively small Iglesia del Sagrario in central Granada is easily missed owing to it being adjacent to the much larger and equally impressive Catedrál. But a visit is well worth it, if only to take you out of Granada's midday heat into the coolness inside. Built on the site of a former mosque, the Iglesia del Sagrario is largely baroque in it's architectural styling, the immense and ornately decorate ceilings both overwhelming and inspiring.

Mezquita & Catedrál, Córdoba, Spain
In this picture, Islam meets Christianity in a wonderfully intricate and symbolic piece of architecture. Over the centuries during which the south of Spain was under Moorish rule, an elaborate mosque had developed in Córdoba. But, with the Reconquista, Córdoba fell in the 13th century and the victorious Christian Kings decided to build a cathedral within the mosque complex. It is a wonderful fusion of Gothic, Moorish and Renaissance styles that reflects not just the passage of time but also the rise and fall of civilizations.

Semana Santa, Seville
It's that time of the year again in southern Spainish city of Seville when Nazarenos, the cloaked candle-bearers with conical headdresses, take to the streets in processions that mark Holy Week and the lead up to Easter. These ritualistic processions date from the middle ages and can be seen in many parts of Spain, but Andalucía - and particularly Seville - is where they take it most serious. The streets are thronged and the tapas bars are packed as the processions make their way through the old medieval centre of this vibrant city.

St Vitus Cathedral, Prague
A fine example of Gothic architecture, construction of St Vitus Cathedral, which is located in the Prague Castle complex, was begun in 1344 under the lead of the French master builder Matthias of Arras and it's design and layout owes much to the late French Gothic style. After Matthias' death in 1352 work continued under Peter Parler, who introduced some fine innovations of his own, most notably the double ribbed vaulting clearly seen here, a departure from the single vaulting of traditional Gothic architecture, which gave added strength and a new ornamentation to the ceiling.

Meteora, Greece
Meteora must rank, for me, as one of the most awe-inspiring places I've been to, and I've been to quite a few. Not only is the landscape of sandstone pillars breathtaking, but atop many of these pillars are perched ancient monasteries that are still thriving. Get there at sunset or sunrise and you have the makings of some great photos. Here we see the 16th century Monastery of St. Barbara, just after the sun went down. You can visit the monasteries. Some are easily accessible. Others require climbing hundreds of steps. All are beautifully decorated inside and offer exceptional views of an exceptional landscape.

Segovia, Spain
Built by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago, the aquaduct in Segovia is perhaps the finest surviving example of its kind. Reaching a maximum height of just under 100ft (30m) and built from granite blocks without the use of mortar, the aquaduct was constructed to deliver water from the Fuente Fría river more than 10 miles away.

Piazza del Campo, Siena, Italy
The first time I went to Siena, in the summer of 1994, the sky was blue and the sun was hot and the place was busy. I remember eating dinner with a friend on a street near the Piazza del Campo in the warm evening air as the town buzzed with activity. It made a lasting impression. But when I returned earlier in January it was quite a different scene that greeted me. Wandering the streets in the early morning, the sky was grey, the air was cold and there was snow on the ground. But the Piazza del Campo still held a timeless beauty, and Siena remains a place I look forward to returning to, any time of the year.

Leeds, England
This marvelous piece of Victorian architecture in northern England was once the city's Corn Exchange. It has been completely refurbished and now houses a restaurant and some boutiques. I was immediately captivated by the structure and the lines. I'm not a big fan of tripods and, although I only had a few minutes to spare before catching a train to Manchester, I took the time to walk around and take some hand held photos. The sun came out, the place lit up and I got this shot.

The winter light in Tuscany can sometimes be so soft, especially after it's been raining when a slight mist remains on the air. With the barren trees it offers a picture of Tuscany quite different to the summer scenes we are so used to.

Evening at Dyrhólaey, Iceland
Iceland does provide some of the most spectacular landscapes and almost continuous sunshine in the summer months, so it's particularly attractive to photographers. This was shot, handheld, at around midnight in late July in the magical landscape of Dyrhólaey in southern Iceland from the top of a 120m cliff. The next morning, after quite a bit of looking, I managed to find my way onto the black sand beach you can see in the bottom left.

Afyssos, Greece
Greece can be cold in winter, but the sunsets are still spectacular. I ended up in Afyssos quite by chance. I had a bit of time to kill between visiting the monasteries of Meteora and a planned visit to Athens and a look at the map suggested the Pelion peninsula might be worth a look to fill the gap. The choice was then to visit the east coast or the west coast of the peninsula. Anticipating a wonderful Greek sunset I plumped for the west coast, and I wasn't disappointed when I arrived in the small village of Afyssos.

Budapest, Hungary
Today it is one of Europe's most elegant cities, cut in two by the broad majestic sweep of the Danube, but until unification in 1873 Budapest was two separate cites - Buda and Pest. Viewed here from Buda Castle, the capital of Hungary is especially beautiful at the "magic hour" when natural light is fading and the city lights - particularly those on the Chain Bridge - begin to come on.

Fisherman's Bastion, Budapest
Built just over a century ago and offering great views over the city of Budapest, the Halászbástya, or Fisherman's Bastion, was nearly completely destroyed during WWII. The neo-Romanesque style of the building has plenty of turrets, parapets and stairways stairways and is decorative rather than defensive. The seven towers that stand along it's terrace symbolise the seven Magyar tribes who settled the area over a thousand years ago, and who became the basis of the modern Hungarian nation.

Dyrhólaey, Iceland
Before I went to Iceland I saw a photograph taken at this spot about 100 years ago and decided I wanted to see it and photograph it myself. The arch and the giant rocks in the sea very much appealed to me. But when I arrived at Dyrhólaey late in the evening I couldn't see the arch! The only road for visitors brought you to the top of the cliff where there is a spectacular view from above the arch, but not this one. It took much driving around, and eventually a half hour walk to find my way to the long, black sand beach from where I got this shot. If I hadn't seen the old photo beforehand, I wouldn't have known this view existed and I would have left with the same photo as all the other tourists. My perseverance paid off.

Rovinj, Croatia
Sometimes, when I'm working with wide lenses, people enter my shots without realizing it. When this happens, usually I wait patiently for them to leave. But sometimes I feel they add to the shot and I include them. I had set up this shot on a back street in Rovinj because I liked the lines and the textures and the composition as a whole. Behind me, two boys were playing with a ball. The ball came into my shot, followed by the boy. And for a few seconds he stood there, playing with the ball at his feet, seemingly oblivious to my presence. But I knew he added a strong component to the image, and he was standing exactly where I would have placed him. So I took the picture, he went back to his friend, and I went on my way.

Geesala Races, Co Mayo, Ireland
There are still some parts of Ireland that have horse racing on the beach and it is a wonderful sight to behold. The combination of man, animal and nature is compelling. The soft, rapid thud of the hooves on the sand as the horses race by the cheering of the crowds on the dunes above the beach makes for a sense of excitement rarely experienced on these otherwise tranquil locations. These events are rare enough today, but have a long history in Ireland and are well worth a visit.

Giants Causeway, Co Antrim, Ireland
Made up of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed some 60 million years ago, the Giants Causeway is the most popular destination for tourists in Northern Ireland. The coast of Scotland is visible from here and legend has it that the mythical Irish hero, Finn McCool, challenged a Scottish giant to a fight and built this causeway to enable him to cross to Scotland from Ireland. Geologists might disagree but, whatever the origins of this wonderful landscape are, it is a place that has stirred the imaginations of people for a long time and in Ireland we tend not to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The Rat Catcher, Kotido, Uganda
Not too long ago in this part of northeastern Uganda, people ate meat regularly but persistent drought and cattle raiders from outlying areas seriously depleted the cattle herd. Today, food is scarce and it was with some shock and not a little sadness that I met this boy, barely ten years old and obviously tired and hungry, making his way home after a long day hunting rats. But he is no pest controller. This is food for his family. So while you're munching on your cornflakes or planning where to get your Christmas turkey, spare a thought for those with less palatable food options and, maybe, give a donation to the Red Cross who are doing tremendous work in the area with regard to food security for the local population.

It is a massive work of solid stone and subtle light, and is the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary. The church, built in the Classicistic style between 1822 and 1869 on the site of earlier churches going back centuries, has a dome 100m (300ft) high and is so large that the echo from a sound made here will last for a full nine seconds.
