Photoshop action set for creating (fake) long exposure clouds in post - use with care!
I've created a set of photoshop actions to create subtle looking long exposure streaks of clouds in post production. Please use with care and consideration, this action set is meant as a reference or source of inspiration to create those clouds yourself or better yet: to shoot them in-camera with the Formatt Hitech Filters for example:) http://www.bwvision.com/photoshop-action-download-long-exposure-cloud-streaks/

St Paul’s Cathedral, London 2015

Happy New Year to everyone! Yes, even including to my enemies.
A few years ago I stopped making New Year’s resolutions. We should be making resolutions for life, not just for the New Year. So I made myself the following resolution two years ago: life is short, don’t waste your time to anything that isn’t worth your time. Enjoy life, pursue your passions and dreams. Live according to your passions. Create beautiful things that can move myself and hopefully also others. Because that’s the only thing that’s really worth an effort in life. When I’m moved by beautiful art, I feel alive, I feel like I’m really living. What’s more beautiful than creating things that can move people? Even though I didn’t know, and still don’t know, if I could ever do that, create art and pursue my passions, I wanted to give it a try. So at that point I quit mydaytime job that I ha... more »

So at that point I quit my daytime job that I had for the past 16 years, and throw away my academic training as a criminal lawyer and an IT expert and all expectations that people had of me of building up a respectable career, not so much to be a ‘professional photographer’, or to be an ‘artist’. No, just to be spending my life doing the things I love, that made me feel alive. I left all securities and I was now facing a financially very unsure future, because now I had to make money with my passions, with the things I love to do. Without wasting any time, and my life, at business meetings at the office that I loathed, without wasting any time in traffic jams during rush hours. Without being held accountable for whatever I did on a day except to myself, to life and of course to the Tax administration (some things never change). No more wasting time and my life, just for the sake of making money and building up a career.
I never regretted that decision. For the past 2 years I only do things I love to do: create some nice photos, write a bit and teach a bit about it, and travel places. And even though I’m doing financially better than ever before I quit my daytime job and career, there’s still a lot of insecurity. Who knows, maybe next year this time I’ll be writing this from inside a cardboard box, living on the streets. Or maybe I’m still doing what I love to do, writing to you from my sunny studio in an exotic location. The point is, you never know what the future will bring you, only what you do right now. I’ve tried to really start living, and maybe I’ll die living, but it’s always better than being dead all your life.
So I really wish you all to start living and pursue your passions and dreams, not only this New Year, but for the rest of your life. Today’s not too late, but tomorrow can be.

Canon 5DSR long exposure photography test results
With the help of +Mabry Campbell and +Fahed Alshahman we've conducted several long exposure photography tests with the new 50MP Canon 5DSR to assess the noise performance with extended long exposures up to 37 minutes. I'm presenting the results in my latest article on bwvision.com. I think the results are surprising.

REVISED AND UPDATED COMPLETE GUIDE TO LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY 2016 EDITION

I’ve just finished the updated and revised version of my Long exposure photography tutorial that in many ways is different from the previous version released last year (viewed >120,000 times in a little more than a year): I think it has a better and clearer structure now and also has much more information, tips and tricks on everything related to shooting long exposures but also on recommended gear like cameras, tripods, tripod heads and even extensive information on something so small but essential as Quick Release systems. I’ve included many tables to make the information even more clear and transparent. Tables on specific long exposure effects and my preferred weather and light conditions for example.

LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY QUICK REFERENCE CARD WITH OPTIMAL AND MOST USED SETTINGS
I've created an extensive, downloadable and printable high resolution, quick reference card for long exposure photography with all relevant information that you can use when shooting out in the field. Specifically designed for beginners to more advanced long exposure photographers but also for long exposure photography workshop instructors to hand out to their students. Oh and it's definitely more than just another table with some numbers:)

On July 9 EU parliament will vote for a proposal that will restrict the Freedom of Panorama. This means that when you take photographs of public buildings on public ground for commercial purposes this is only allowed when you have the approval of the copy rights holder of the building.
This is a flagrant breach of my freedom of expression as a photographer but also if you’re just taking holiday snaps you want to post on Facebook or any other website.
How will this law be enforced practically when you take pictures? It’s impossible but when you take pictures of let’s say London’s skyline, you’re likely to be harassed by zealous security or police officers, especially when you take out your tripod. It’s simple, since no one is wearing a sign on his head indicating he’s a photographer with commercial purposes they will look for characteristics that give them reason to suspect you’re having commercial purposes. Of course that’s very likely when you have a tripod or something larger than an iPhone! And if you actually have commercial intentions or just want to avoid being harassed, then try finding the copyright holder of the buildings in your photo - good luck with that!
How will this law be enforced when publishing pictures of public buildings? You will face legal action if you post your London Skyline photo on your Facebook page or any other website and if you don’t have the prior approval of the copyright holders of the buildings.
Come on, have they all gone mad? So this is how my photos will look like in the future if useless bureaucracy gets their way: even blacker than usual.___

Colours of New York City
The colour rendition of my Visual Acoustics VIII - New York City Sunrise image.
More colour work to come.
Facebook or any other photo sharing site on the Internet doesn't do justice to my panoramic images. Even more, no photo sharing site does do justice to my images at all. Best to see them live, for example at the Rotella galleries in NYC and Las Vegas where you can see my images in sizes up to almost 100 inches (2.5 meters).
I used my iSGM B&W workflow method for processing this image. Yes, it's applicable to anything;)

Redesigned website - Focused on sharing knowledge
Some of you might have noticed it but I've redesigned my website www.bwvision.com. Not only did I give it a more contemporary look and feel, but also made it such that it's clear that my website is not a gallery of my own work but a website focused on sharing knowledge on the art of B&W photography, long exposure photography and fine art in general with clear and intuitive navigation. It's not completely finished yet (still need to add the calendar/news/event section and a few more features) but why not have a look and tell me what you think of it? And if you want to see some specific articles/tutorials/topics let me know! This page will be an extension of that website. Special thanks to Douwe Dijkstra who gave me some valuable advice on the design of the logo. That's a man who knows his trade!

New Logo for website
While redesigning my website www.bwvision.com (that exploded into cyberspace a few days ago), I took some time to redesign my logo. I needed something simple but not with the usual camera in it. Just a few simple lines to indicate the association with architecture like bridges. And the colour orange had to play an important role. So here it is after a hard day's work: bw/vision or black and white w/ (with) vision. Still not done with the website yet but it will be done in a few more days. Hope you like the simple logo.

My website crashed - under construction
My website www.bwvision.com has recently exploded into cyberspace. Trying to fix it while running a temporary WP theme but the layout is all over the place. Hmm, it feels like I've lost my home on the web and living in a tent in one of the cyber streets now. If anyone has any suggestions for a good theme, it would be appreciated. In the meantime: please be patient, you can still find all the tutorials on my website but you have to look for a while:)

B&W Analogue Film Photography - developing and scanning film - a practical tutorial

As I’m continuing re-sharing older interviews that were almost impossible to find on my website after so many years, and after redesigning the website, I’m now also re sharing older tutorials written by guest writers that are worth sharing again.
This one is written by +Matt Toynbee in 2011 and it is about developing film. Since I think film still has its place in this digital era (and often looks superior compared to digital) I’m picking up film photography again soon (looking for a nice used Hasselblad analog camera btw) and I thought it would be nice to share this interesting tutorial with you.

Another lost spotlight interview re-shared: Marc Koegel Interview
Another ‘lost’ spotlight interview I did almost 4 years ago and is worth highlighting again, is this interview with +Marc Koegel. One of the reasons I switched from seascapes to fine art architecture in 2009 was after I saw Marc’s fine art architectural work. In fact one of the very first fine art architectural photos I saw was Marc’s, and that was long before fine art architecture has become so popular these days.

Cole Thompson interview
A few years ago I published a series of interviews on my website, called "in the spotlight interview". They were a popular series of interviews but after I revamped my website 2 years ago most of them were 'lost'. I've decided to re-share the interviews I did with +Cole Thompson, +Marc Koegel , Michael Levin and a few more prominent photographers again, in the next few days for your reading pleasure. First re-shared interview is an interview with Cole. One of my favorite contemporary B&W fine art artists.

New Tutorial on creating 'hard' selections to isolate and control shapes
An important part of my B&W workflow is to deconstruct a photo to just shapes and light. Control shapes and light, and you control everything in a photo. To be able to do that shapes and light have to be identified and then isolated first. Shapes are visually identified and can be isolated by creating accurate 'hard' selections. Light can automatically be identified and isolated by creating luminosity masks. I've written tutorials on all aspects that can be found on my website. This is part 4 out of the 4-part series on creating hard selections to isolate and control shapes: http://www.bwvision.com/selections-putting-it-all-together/ The previous tutorial on creating luminosity masks for identifying, isolating and finally controlling light can be found here: more »
