I am very selective with interviews. But this one with +Nathan Wirth is special: it took me 9 months (!) to finish this interview, even longer than my Postprocessing :)
A quote taken from the interview: (...) I’m Joel … I try to make something beautiful out of a primary need to create and be accepted and recognized … out of a deeply rooted passion … out of a need to be more than an insect on the face of eternity (...) Heading for Paris now!

Last day to take advantage of the 20% discount for the B&W Masterclass video tutorial
I'll be packing for my trip to Paris tomorrow - hopefully getting back with some beautiful fine-art photography impressions of Paris - but not before I left a final note that there's one day left to take advantage of the 20% promotion discount for my B&W and LE video tutorial. Promotional discount ends May 20.

We take photographs. We live for light. We breath vision. It's what keeps us going. We are photographers.
But David is blind. Totally blind. He sees colour only in his dreams. He says he feels like a ghost - nobody notices him - but he only knows he's for real when he walks into something and feels the pain.
Please watch this video by UK documentary photographer +J A Mortram who's been documenting David's life for a while along with the lives of many other folk in his home town. It's a project called Small Town Inertia. It's important.
I've never asked before but if you're one of the Google+ big wigs with thousands of followers then please would you consider sharing this? We want to raise - no, we WILL raise - $3200 dollars so that David can have a scanner and then be able to read again.
If you feel moved then please contribute - a... more »

From Stills to Motion - Online time lapse workshop
Want to set your images in motion? I'm excited to announce a new online workshop where I will be explaining time lapse techniques in an easy to understand and fun way. When I was learning how to create time lapse shots myself, I found that a lot of resources lean very heavily on the technical aspects, meanwhile loosing track of the creative side. With this online course I want to show you how easy and fun it is to capture the element of time and create (literally) moving images. Even if you already have some experience with time lapse, I'll show you how to take your shots to a whole new level.

Announcement and discontinuation of my photography communities
I'm the owner and co-moderator of 2 of the largest photography communities on Google+: The Long Exposure Photography community https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/113835599504494437905 which is in the top 12 of largest photo communities and The Black and White Fine Art Photography Community https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/105964557399219773720 which is the 8th largest photography community at this moment.
Considering the fact that both communities have grown substantially in just a few months and have become uncontrollable due to the lack of tools for moderators to moderate the communities in such a way that it isn't an annoying daily burden, I'm planning to discontinue both communities before the end of April. The point is that there is no additional value nor fun for me or for any moderator... more »

STOLEN CAMERA GEAR!
One of my biggest fears came into reality yesterday.
My camera bag, full of almost everything I own has been stolen. (except for a 200€ flashgun I accidentally left at home).
It all happened while I was having lunch, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in a small bar in the city center of Milan. My backpack was between my chair (which I never left) and a solid concrete wall; I still can’t believe they succeeded in taking that cumbersome 10+kg backpack without me even noticing.
Side note – just to give you a smile: I was drinking still water at the time.
It’s pretty hard to get insured if you’re not a professional here in Italy, so no chance of getting ANY money back.
Just below my personal information you will find a list of the stolen items; some are definitely uncommon like my infra red converted 5D MKII (their are n... more »

Introducing Plus One Collection 2012 - Limited Edition Prints - Print #1
For those of you who have ordered Limited Edition of #PlusOneCollection2012, your book will ship with a fine art print. There will be five prints to choose from (and I'll be sending an email to all buyers asking which one they prefer). It's with great pleasure that I will introduce you to these five amazing photographs in the next five days. The artists gave me their permission to print their work - which is very generous of them, and one artist will even do his own printing (stay tuned!).
We're starting with this master piece by +Joel Tjintjelaar, titled "New York City ESB 316". Joel shot this during his trip to New York last year, and like all of you, I was blown away by the quality of this image when I first saw him share it. The tones, the lines, the sky, the mood, the raw emotion... more »

Plus One Collection - UPDATE #5 - Who is in print book + FUNDRAISING
You voted very soundly for including more artists in the book, and we're going to do just that. Here's your list of who's work is going to be included in the print version of the book - http://plusonecollection.com/2012-artists/
Now that you know, we really need to up our fundraising. We have just 9 days to make print book possible, but we're only 55% there. Quite a mountain to climb.
YOU CAN HELP HERE - http://www.indiegogo.com/plus-one-collection-2012
As you asked, we're making cheaper version of the book available at $99 or $125 if you live outside US. You can also contribute directly, aka "open contribution." I still think Limited Edition is best because you get a collector's version of the book, a beautiful print and you're maximizing y... more »

NEW YORK CITY ESB 316
Here's the first posting from the New York CIty workshop/photowalk that we did in November 2012. It's the Empire State Building.
Some notes: I've been using the brand new Hitech IRND Prostop2 filters generously provided by Hitech Format. For now I can say that I've definitely put aside my trusty B+W ND filters and will be using the Hitech IRND filters only: they're simply very neutral and they come as screw on and rectangular filters. As you know I'm very critical in my selection of filters, this is something I can really recommend.
These filters will become available first at Amazon and B&H in the weeks to come.
Thanks Rod Clark!

+Black and White Fine Art Photography Gallery featured artists of 2012.
Here's the +Black and White Fine Art Photography Gallery circle of B&W fine art artists who have been featured in this eclectic gallery of the best B&W photographs in 2012. When picking those artists I didn't look at their status, at their follower numbers, at the fact if they were active or not or if they have mentioned me, liked me, tweeted me, pinterested me or at whatever irrelevant criterion you could ever think of. No, I only looked at the quality of their art. That's why they have been featured in 2012. In other words: here are the best B&W artists of 2012. Period.
Oh and if you have been featured in this gallery in 2012 but weren't included then that's because I couldn't add you to that circle (a page can only add if they are being followed. Sorry about that, not my m... more »

NYC Photo Walk impressions
After some initial delays caused by travel and my iMac's hard drive needing to be replaced, I managed to finish this video showing some impressions of the NYC Photo Walk that took place on November 10-13 of this year.
During those 4 days, a lot of us were doing long exposure photography, a genre that not only captures a much longer time span than regular photography, smoothing out any fast motion into something more ethereal, but also forces the photographer to work more slowly and mindfully, given the amount of time each shot takes. Even though NYC can be very hectic, I wanted this video to reflect this slowing down of time.
In a few shots I also experimented with a new technique which I call "long exposure slow motion". Let's see if you can spot them :-)
I would like to thank all of the participants, without... more »

Okay here's some news:
1. I'll be announcing the top 10 of best B&W fine art photographs of 2012 tonight. I spent quite some time on this, and I really think it's a collection of photos and photographers that are amongst the very best.
2. Raising the bar even higher to make this the best B&W fine art page on G+: instead of 50+ +1's only photos with 150+ +1's will be included in this gallery. This of course besides the ones I will hand pick, regardless the number of +1's.
Please read the about section on this page for more info.
Photographers ending up in the top 10 of each year will be promoted actively by me here on G+ and also on my personal website www.bwvision.com
Sincerely, your host +Joel Tjintjelaar

And why can't I post to my (public) circles and to a community at the same time? Doesn't make any sense and creates so much clutter. Time for some evaluation G+!

Finally here's part 1 of this new series of video tutorisal on my B&W post production techniques.
Part 1 is a general introduction to my B&W workflow applied on the easiest type of subjects: seascapes:)
Part 2 will follow within a week and will go into detail how I apply these techniques to architectural subjects. Learn how to create those single spear like single clouds yourself and how to create rich silvery mid-grey tones with subtle tonal gradations.
Part 3 is all about complex Selective Gradient Masking techniques applied to complex subjects like automobiles.
For now, here's part 1. Unfortunately the sound isn't too good, I'll be using a new professional microphone for part 2, just so you know!
Note that this part 1 will be available to anyone but part 2 and further will only be available to people who have attended one of my workshops.
