Gregg Lantz2,962Tomorrow is a taxing day here in the United States. You get to decide if you want to buy Glass (sorry IRS). If you're not sure and would like to know what others are saying, add this circle.  You'll be able to look at public posts from people that use Glass and people that purchased Glass and put it on the shelf while software was being developed. You'll get both sides of the story. Hopefully this circle will help make the decision process a little easier. Hung cuavan607Get in More CirclesWhen You reshare with a circle, you should also explain the benefits of participating in shared circles. Explain the BenefitsExplain that when they add the circle many people in the circle will add them back. Also,Explain that if they re-share your post that the circle creator may add them to their future shared circles. If you do these two simple things you will increase your re-share rate. Susanne Ramharter3,133Fridays are for sharing circlesto the new people who have put me in their circles: many thanks! Some of you I have already had contact with, to the rest, I would like to reciprocate with this circle. It is hand-picked, and contains people who are funny, intelligent, knowledgeable, and engaged. You will find information about social media, google+, as well as cognitive science, books, travel and art, some agitation against encroaching on civil liberties (SOPA, ACTA, censorship - mostly from me ;-) inspirational as well as snarky things, and yes, the occasional cat. But everyone here is friendly and has great things to contribute, so feel free to share the circle if you like.Have fun!2012-03-09 15:46:5631329719

Lambert Schlumpf874Circle Shareee! The Interactive CircleI modified a bit the circle shared by +Max Huijgen yesterday afternoon (GMT): few people have been removed because their posts attract thousands of comments and you wouldn't get replies anyway. Plus, I am sure you have already in your circles people like +Trey Ratcliff, +Tom Anderson or +Mike Elgan.I added instead few others who I reckon are more interactive, In the meaning that if you post a direct comment to the author you are very likely going to receive a reply, which is always nice: They are people like +Christy Ramsey, +Paul van de Loo, +Clare Cosgrove, +Yvan Da Silva and others. Some of them are not very famous, but oh, well... they interact! Here the original post, via +Max Huijgen Out of the box into a circle: change your G+ world!http://j.mp/z4s0ZH2012-02-26 09:21:182021508
Max Huijgen13,212Out of the box into a circle: change your G+ world! The pegs and the holes, the ones who think different, the people who will change your G+ worldA careful selection on relevance, great posts, contributions to debate, original thought and stunning images. If you follow this circle of 200, G+ will never be boring and you are in for a stream of thoughts and beauty. The familiar faces show up, but it contains a large number of hidden gems if you dig deeper. As a circle needs a name: "Think different: the interaction circle" will do very well.Update: The most interesting part is that the circle is part of some experiments: one of them is the daily update. A way to ´subscribe´ to a circle by reading all the post at your leisure. Every day you will see the complete collection on this url:http://publiccircles.appspot.com/dailyplus/z12luh3hjsngtd04y04cetehsvf0x3nbtmc0kOn a dull Saturday this circle managed to create 780 posts and generate 7093 comments, 4842 reshares and 16074 +1's. Check it on a week day and that page will be living proof that G+ is not dead at all. This circle alone generates more posts and comments than you can possibly read on a day. Oh yes, that´s why it´s called the interaction circle ;)2012-02-24 22:38:5920015310285

Chris Hoyt1,112Circle Back to GoogleLooking for people who work at Google? Here's a great circle that's a strong addition to any search you've already performed on Google Plus and that I'd include with any other search for Googlers that you've already conducted. What's interesting to me (and that I'm getting around to pointing out) is that whether you're just looking to expand your network as a member of Google+ or actively #recruiting and #sourcing online, I believe that you'll find infinite value from the proper care and feeding of Google Plus circles. In fact, if done correctly (and maintained) it's a fantastic way to filter your Google Plus stream and check the pulse of any company, organization or interest group. In the event you missed it, I did an article back in August that mentioned my interest in Circles and how I'd be exploring the management of them. (http://www.recruiterguy.net/recruiting-management-circles) So far, I've not been disappointed in the ability to really hone in on an area of interest by filtering my streams based on these circles and simply watching the conversation flow. Of course, being able to quickly see all of the updates from a particular company or interest group is just the start. The more proficient we get with our filtering, the easier it is to get the latest from fun entrepreneurs, CEO's, diversity interest groups, active and passive jobseekers and more - these are just a few of my own circles, mind you. You have the ability to filter by profession, seniority, geography, language, etc.The possibilities are endless!I'd love to hear how you, or others, are using circles to manage the information stream you've found in G+ so far.2012-01-04 20:07:36348211

Louis Gray71,017It's been a little while since I shared with you my Googlers circle. Secret Google Glass Case

While I prefer to keep Glass on my head – once and a while you've got to put it away in a bag or something.

For those times, I made myself this handy secret book case :)

old book
x-acto knife
a bit of fabric
and a hot glue gun

Result came out pretty good.

If you're going to make your own, tips:
- take your time cutting through the layers of pages.  It takes a while.
- cut the hole plenty big enough ... mine ended up tight after I glued in the fabric
- hot glue dries fast, make sure you press the fabric down on it quick, otherwise it can get lumpy

Enjoy!  Let me know if you try making your own, or make a book case like this for something else.

Don't forget your phone...
Let your watch tell you when you forget it

This is a fairly nicely, simply done app that pops up a notification on your Android Wear watch whenever you go out of range of your phone.

The other day I left the house without my phone, and was wishing I had something like this.  And just the next day I saw the author of the app post about it on G+.

We just updated our Transparency Report, showing how many requests Google gets for information about its users. But we're not allowed to give the full story because the U.S. government says that requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) must be kept secret. Lovely

Google Material Design is AWESOME!!!! ^0^

example: http://goo.gl/fE4XNj
( Demo on EZoApp, click the preview button, swipe up, swipe down, swipe left or right, and enjoy it ^__^ )

This is the "Google Material Design" style template, It only used CSS3, jQuery and Polymer Paper elements, you can make effects like native UI, you can swipe up, swipe down, swipe left or right to slide, it will looks pretty good ~

But at this time, it is not combined with json or xml, display on mobile devices also has some little problems, because it's just a UI demo now, I will continue to fix it~ :-(___Lovely

This article is incredible.
If you like soccer, read it.

Awesome article and analysis. Tons of detailed statistics and charts, and you'll be amazed at just what an outlier Lionel Messi is in so many different measures.

For example, "Messi makes more passes than the other forwards, with a higher percentage of those passes trying to advance the ball toward the goal, and a higher percentage of those passes finding their targets (typical Messi!). His 3,800-plus completed forward passes are nearly twice as many as any forward in our data set (Francesco Totti for FC Roma has 2,200, followed by Wayne Rooney, the English striker, with 1,800 and Ronaldo with 1,500)."___This article is incredible.

These are super cool. Well done +Evan Parker and the other folks who worked on this.

Who would have guessed that #cardboard is what it would take to create simple, fun, inexpensive virtual reality for everyone?!  This is what I've been working on recently in my 20% time (more like 200% of my time for the last two weeks before Google I/O!) with a bunch of other VR enthusiasts at Google.  My main contributions were the lens distortion correction code (which was a lot of fun to research and code, I'll have to do a separate post about that later), and the photo sphere viewer that is part of the demo app.  I love using Cardboard to show people photo spheres I've taken - it really gives you the feeling of being there!

I can't call out everyone who helped make this project a reality, but I will thank in particular +David Coz and +Damien Henry for their original vision in starting the project.

This is what I've been working on lately.

This is material design.

When we started building for the first mobile devices, mobile meant less: less screen space, slower connection, fewer features. A mobile experience was often a lesser experience. But mobile devices have evolved—they have become more powerful, faster, and more intuitive—so must our approach to design.

And as Google, including the Android platform, expands into new form factors, we’re introducing one consistent design that spans devices across mobile, desktop, and beyond. Today at #io14 , we introduced material design, which uses tactile surfaces, bold graphic design, and fluid motion to create beautiful, intuitive experiences…___This is what I've been working on lately.

And in further news for the day, Unicode 7.0 was released! Apart from really key additions like Linear A and Nabatean script (for those of you who work a lot in ancient languages), there have been numerous additions to the symbol blocks of the encoding. In addition to some new rude gestures, we have probably the most useful new code point in the standard, U+1F574: MAN IN BUSINESS SUIT LEVITATING.

I don't think I can even come up with a better name than that. I mean, we now have a code point for a man in a business suit, levitating. (Question: Why don't we have an analogous code point for a woman in a business suit levitating? Next time I need to write about government conspiracies, I'm going to need that, aren't I?)

I also call this to the attention of the +Fake Unicode Consortium, which should have several new code points to document.___MOAR EMOJI! WOOT

Tesla: All Our Patent Are Belong to You

Welp, +Tesla Motors has just made their electric vehicle patents open source for the world. What?!

According to the official blog post:

"Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard."

Device
Nexus 5

Methodology
1. Record a video of the screen of my phone (using +Google Glass)

2. Open a couple simple drawing apps
I tried +Paul Irish's multitouch web canvas demo (http://goo.gl/IOoTKE) and a native app, called KidsDoodle (http://goo.gl/wWsKAq)

3. In each app, draw mountain-shaped arcing lines

4. Measure the time between observing my physical finger reaching it's peak height and the time the drawn line on the screen reaches it's peak height

The time difference here is the approximate touch latency, at least for this device with these apps.

Results
In both the web app and the native app, I saw about 100ms delays between my finger and the line drawn on the screen.

Not too bad, but still far to slow, especially given Microsoft Research demoed this very low-latency touch screen 2 years ago.  In that video they described "current devices on the market" being at around 100ms, so I'm a little disappointed that two years later, current devices on the market don't seem much better.

One thing I was glad to find was that the web app didn't perform any worse than the native app.  This is a good sign for the future of high-quality, performant web apps, that there doesn't appear to be any significant lag in interpreting touch events.

What's next
I'd be curious if other devices perform better, or if my methodology makes sense.  Anyone else want to try this on an iPhone?  How about on tablets?  Do they fare any better?  What about Windows Phone?  If Microsoft did this research two years ago, has that made it into their products?

More
Of course I should have done some research into this before doing my own measurements, because here's a great writeup and methodology much more through than my own:
http://appglimpse.com/blog/touchmarks-i-smart-phone-touch-screen-latencies/
http://appglimpse.com/blog/touchmarks-ii-touchscreen-latencies-in-flagship-tablets/

The folks over at +Agawi AppGlimpse seemed to find latencies similar to the ones I measured for some Android devices.  They found iPhone faster, and in some cases significantly faster, and interestingly enough Windows phone didn't do so hot.  Microsoft really needs to do a better job bringing their excellent research into their products.

Anyway, I found all of this pretty interesting.   Hope you did too.___

With more than a billion translations daily across 80 languages, Google Translate's goal is to enable people to communicate better no matter where they are or what language they speak. But though we've made a lot of progress, the quality of these translations still varies—and it turns out that the single largest factor that determines translation quality is the amount of data available. Lots of fun, high paying jobs available. And the computer science skill set is essential.

I jotted some thoughts down on Computer Science and why I don't think front-end devs should reject it.___Good post.

I'm amazed more people aren't talking about the drought we're in right now.

What's behind the California Drought?

Check out the tiny blue line in the graphs below. That's our rain so far in this, the wet reasons. Yikes.

It's unclear why Governor Jerry Brown hasn't declared it officially, but the experts already have. California is in the middle of what might turn out to be the worst drought in its history. Check out this awesome blog post describing this terrifying weather pattern:

Robot Telemarketer who insists she's a real person
This is actually pretty interesting to listen to.

A couple articles about it
(the second +TIME article was the original piece, but they have a huge ad at the top of their page, so I almost didn't want to link to them)

Making demo videos of Android apps
Android screenrecord and more

I just posted here: http://goo.gl/5LIcVf
about one of my favorite new features in Google Translate, shortcut widgets that jump you directly into the app, say for speech translation English to Chinese.

For that post I created a demo video, showing how to setup the widget and using it.

What was totally awesome, was that I could use screenrecord, a new feature of Android in KitKat, to easily record a video of my screen as I performed the demo.

It was very easy to do.  First, I turned on "Show touches" in the developer menu, to make it more obvious where I touched on the screen.  Then connected my phone to my laptop, and typed:

adb shell screenrecord /sdcard/demo.mp4

Ctrl-C when I'm done. And...

adb pull /sdcard/demo.mp4more »

Ctrl-C when I'm done. And...

adb pull /sdcard/demo.mp4

to pull the file back to my laptop.

So cool!

Unfortunately I discovered that this video has no audio :(
I was hoping it would at least capture the system audio, and even better, both the system audio and record from the mic.

To solve that, I did the video capture as I described above, while simultaneously recording audio using my laptop.  On my laptop I used QuickTime Player, File > New Audio Recording, and then saved that audio.

This gave me a .mp4 video and a .m4a audio recording.

I opened the video in QuickTime Player, then just dragged the .m4a audio on top of the video.

I then had to double-click the audio timeline and trimmed a little audio off the beginning to get the audio to match up.  Some quick trial and error got this done pretty quickly.

Finally, I saved my finished movie (as a .mov).

I thought I was done – I'd upload that video to Google+ and share it.  But alas, it was never successfully processed by Google+, so I tried uploading it to Youtube.  Youtube couldn't process it either :(  Something must be wonky with this video.

I was finally able to get it up on Youtube by using the built-in "Share" feature in QuickTime Player, and "Sharing" it directly to Youtube.

This uploaded successfully.  Yay!  And I could use Youtube's fancy audio stuff to add a backing track and a little annotation to the video =D

So there you have it – I hope this is helpful to anyone trying to do something similar.

And leave me two questions which maybe you smart folks will have answers to, and if not, I'll follow up with my colleagues at Google:

(1) Can we make it possible to capture audio with screenrecord too?
(2) Why couldn't my .mov be uploaded and processed by Google+ or Youtube?

Thanks for reading.  Questions?  Comments?  Suggestions?

Cheers!___
